Captain’s Column
Worthing Pavilion’s indoor season came to a successful close when Simon Davey won the Unbadged County Singles on Sunday Morning at Falaise Bowls Club in Hastings. In the Final, that was delayed from last week due to illness to his opponent Kieran Jay, Simon won 21-8. He was also runner up in the County Pairs Final with Richard Dray so it has proved to be a very successful indoor season for him. It has also been a very successful season in general for Pavilion with them having their highest ever finish in the County League Division 1 and reaching th the 5 round of the Denny Cup for the first time. Still not quite up there with the top two but now beginning to be a real threat for the future.

Pavilion's first outdoor friendly fixture was on Monday 1st May 2017 when we were hosts to Chippenham Tourists at the tail end of their early four day tour to Sussex. During their long week-end break they were based in East Sussex where they played three matches in and around the Eastbourne area. The visitors, who boasted county players and a past international player amongst their number, came from across the whole county of Wiltshire, not just Chippenham. Being their last port of call before returning home and notwithstanding the colossal challenge, Pavilion managed to accommodate their request for twelve rinks, so all their players were able to play in their final match. All in all, apart from the cold wind and a few light showers with a bit of sunshine thrown in, we were lucky to escape the heavy rain that had been forecast. A competitive match ensued that resulted with the visitors winning 243 200. Pavilion top rink went to Clunky Clarke, Sean McCowan, Pat Edmonds and Haydn Clarke; albeit they did make a mess completing their scorecard. Despite there being an element of chuck and hope involved, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the afternoon’s bowling. The kitchen was kept busy too, feeding sixty or so visitors as well as Pavilion members pre-match, plus over one hundred teas halfway. Mo was also kept busy behind the bar lunchtime, with Andy’ assisting her later with the post-match drinks. It just goes to show the importance of friendly matches and how they benefit the club all round. Thank you to all those club members who put their names down and making themselves available to play.

Brodie Tray
Members are reminded that they are not permitted to change the set-up of the rinks, the direction of play or the configuration of the greens without the prior agreement and consent of the Greenkeeper, or in his absence, of the Green-Ranger or Secretary.
Worthing Pavilion made a successful start on re-entering the Brodie Tray on th Friday 5 May, after a gap of around eleven years, with a ten points home victory over Marine Gardens. Pavilion won on all rinks in this triples competition with total shots scored 89 46. The top rink (21-8) was skipped by Tim Baldwin ably assisted by Pat Edmonds and Alan Muzzell.
Stracey Shield There was a visit to Field Place on th Saturday 6 May, for a Stracey Shield match against Goring Manor Spitfires when a hard fought draw was achieved with the points being shared. Pavilion won on two rinks, drew on one, and lost on the other with a total shot deficit of two (68-70) .The Top rink was skipped by Mark Strong with Sharon Pratt, John Bergin and Mick Steggell. On Wednesday we suffered a home defeat at the hands of Worthing – six points to four, winning only two rinks and losing the match overall by eight shots (88 - 80) The top rink (24 - 19) was skipped by Mark Strong with Sharon Pratt, Phil Carter, and Simon Davey, the other winning rink (20 - 17) was skipped by Dave Thomas. It was decidedly brighter on Saturday when we visited Shoreham, winning on all rinks and claiming ten points with shots scored 97-63. The top rink won 35 - 8 and consisted of Warwick Davis (skip) Lorraine Kuhler, Nora Grief and Bill Simmons.

Extraordinary General Meeting
Open Weekend
There will be an Extraordinary General Meeting for all FULL members of the th club on WEDNESDAY 7 JUNE at 7pm in the lounge. The single item on the agenda will be the proposal to amend the Memoranda and Articles, in the light of the voting rights issues raised at the last AGM. Electronic copies of the proposals have been sent out and copies of the proposed amended document will be available for consideration in the lounge. If you are unable to attend, please see the Secretary to register your vote regarding acceptance or nonacceptance of the proposals prior to the meeting. If agreed, the new document will be registered with Companies House and will be operative for the next AGM.
I would like to thank all the members who came to help at the recent open st nd weekend on 21 and 22 May 2017, especially Graham Farley for all the work organising the event. The results were very encouraging and we have a number of new associate members who are about to start their coaching sessions. The work done by our existing members in showing the visitors around the club and then the excellent work done by a super team of coaches is greatly appreciated and played a huge part in promoting our great club. We urgently need a regular influx of new members and so, please keep up all the efforts with your friends, neighbours and work colleagues.

Members will be aware that for some time we have had a box of sweets available for purchase in aid of the Chestnut Tree Hospice.
25/05/2017
I recently took the box away as there was no stock left. I am deeply saddened and ashamed to report that instead of the £30 that there should have been in the box, the total amounted to £5.01p. I will be in touch with the organisers and regretfully inform them that we will no longer be able to offer sweets for purchase. The difference in the money will be made up by the club.

PAVILION POST Touring Club Salisbury Tour Everything goes well with our 2017 summer tour to Salisbury. All fortyseven attendees should have received a letter requesting clearance of charges from Don. We are in the process of paying the hotel and coach company in advance of our dealings with them.
Bembridge 2018 The tour to Bembridge goes forward and I have put the list up on our spot in the club for all those who wish to attend next February. If you are interested please place your name onto the list. I have anticipated that sixty-four members and friends will be attending this tour and have been able to book thirty-six rooms to cater for that number. These rooms also include those that members had last time. If there are additional members wanting to attend
Warner Typical Standard Room
This means that if your room is classified as "standard" it will cost £169 per person for the four day stay. If your room is classified as "signature" then the charge per person will be £209 and if your room is classified as "royal" then the charges are £229 per person.
with a balcony the 'new' charge would be at £239 per person! I am afraid we can no longer receive our standard all in one negotiated price. Those days have now gone. However, I still believe that the charges per room is a very good deal and actually will not be much more than we paid per person last year. Those who wish to enter the bowls bonanza competition will be charged £27 per person for these games. Prize money remains as was. The agreed discount the touring club receives for booking the numbers we do will used against the ferry costs, so there will be no more charges than those applicable to your room and if bowling the charge as aforementioned. I therefore expect the minimum charge to be at £169 per person, and the highest to be at £309 plus bowls charges.
Canterbury 2018
Warner Typical Signature Room
I should be able to book extra rooms, but I will need notice as soon as possible. However, Warner have changed their charging systems and we are being asked to pay at higher grade charges.
25/05/2017
On top of these charges Warner have added charges for "sea view" at £20 per person, "patio" at £10 per person and with a "balcony" at £10 per person. So for example, if your room is a "signature" room with a sea view and

Summer 2018 is now being prepared and I am in the middle of negotiations for hotel and games around Canterbury, Kent. At the last meeting the majority agreed to continue this holiday by the use of a coach, so this is also being investigated. Costs will be advised as and when known.

PAVILION POST Crime Prevention Following the ransomware cyber attack on Friday 12 May which affected the NHS and is believed to have affected other organisations globally, the City of London Police’s National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has issued an alert urging both individuals and businesses to follow protection advice immediately and in the coming days. Ransomware is a form of malicious software (Malware) that enables cyber criminals to remotely lock down files on your computer or mobile device. Criminals will use ransomware to extort money from you (a ransom), before they restore access to your files. There are many ways that ransomware can infect your device, whether it be a link to a malicious website in an unsolicited email, or through a security vulnerability in a piece of software you use. Social Scene The Connaught Theatre ‘Annie’ th
On Friday 28 April 2017 a contingent of theatre goers from Pavilion attended the Connaught Theatre, Worthing, to see the Worthing Musical Comedy Society’s performance of ‘Annie’ that old time family favourite and subject of two major film productions. My daughter, came over from Brighton with my over-excited eight year old granddaughter, an avid Annie fan, to join my wife in the audience. It was an expensive evening for my wallet though, what with the tickets for the show and an Italian thrown in for good measure beforehand, but it was well worthwhile just to see the reaction of my granddaughter as she came out of the foyer at the end of the performance. I had the chance of canvassing some of our theatre goers as they were leaving the theatre after the show and they were all smiling and full of praise for the production, especially the children in the cast. ‘Sandy’ the dog also had good reviews for his part, but no doubt must be on a strict diet by now, to shed any excess weight from the number of treats that he consumed. As you may guess the performance was a big success for the society. The society’s attention will now turn to their autumn production of the dark comedy ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’ Many thanks to Zoe Wright for arranging the visit for our enjoyment.
Editor Fixing that Broken Zip Timely Reminder Now that we are into the outdoor season and survived the wind, hail and driving rain during this year’s opening drive, no doubt many of us will have rushed to get our waterproofs out of the closet only to find that the zip on the jacket had stuck half way leaving the top half and bottom half of your coat flapping wide open and exposing you to the elements?
4
PAVILION POST Well here is a reminder that not all is lost. If you have managed to return the slider to the bottom of the zip and disengage it without damaging any of the teeth on the zip itself, you may well be able to salvage something and put things right.
Gently does it!!
YouTube provided a simple solution to this issue, by applying light pressure to the slider using a pair of pliers so as to slightly close the gap on the slider. I tried this solution myself and it worked for me.
Coaching Update
The Open Weekend was a busy time for the coaches, we gave introductory lessons to over thirty people, from that number eleven have paid for coaching and seven of them are already under coaching. The people left want to wait a bit for their lessons and two are going on holiday. Overall a very successful weekend and from the rest of people who gave bowls a try we had at least five who will be coming back later for coaching. Special thanks to George Rhodes, Clyde Fordyce, Colin Davey, Keith Bowden and Trevor Parker who gave up so much time over the weekend to make the coaching sessions really successful. The Women’s Institute came to the th Club on Wednesday 24 May for a Fun Session, followed by a buffet. Ten ladies really enjoyed the coaching session and then we played a game, they were really interested and there were one or two who showed real promise. These events certainly do put
the club on the map in Worthing. Every time we bring new people to the club they are amazed at the size of the club, the wonderful greens and the facilities that we have. Many of them did not even know that the club existed and events like these do make us known in the area. This is also good for the club as it brings much needed revenue to the caterers and the bar. If you know of any club or organisation who would like to give bowls a try let Graham Farley know and we all will be very happy to organise an event. We are delighted to announce that Keith Bowden passed his Level Two Coaching Examination with flying st colours on the 21 May. Keith has always showed great promise, but in his exam he was head and shoulders above the other candidates. We wish him well in his future as a coach, we are sure he will be very successful and will be a great addition to the Pavilion Coaching Team.
