A Word from the Bridge Monthly Review th
Saturday 30 August 2014 saw Pavilion ‘C’ team meet Witterings ‘C’ team for their final game of the LGL season, played at Pavilion. A strong team performance saw Pavilion ‘C’ win 91-62 securing eight of the ten points on offer; thereby finishing runners up to East Preston and guaranteeing promotion. They will be joining Pavilion ‘A’ and Pavilion ‘B’ teams in division one next season. Well done Worthing Pavilion Bowls Club!
Friendlies Disappointingly I again had to cancel six friendly matches this month; as we were unable to field sides, due to lack of interest from members. However we were able to scrape together fifteen players to play one away match to Henfield Bowling Club, that the home team won. We also managed to field sides to play touring club Langley Park from Hertfordshire, as well as Hollingbury Park; both on home ground at the end of the month, of which we sadly lost both matches.

PC Cup Final On Sunday 10th September 2014, after a closely fought match against Tarring Priory, WPBC won the PC Cup for the fifth time in its history. I would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all who participated in the competition, not only on the day, but also all those who took part in the earlier matches during the season who; for one reason or another, were unable to play in the final. My thanks also go to both Paul Wilson and Chris Scott for using their experience in the selection processes. The competition, sponsored by the Littlehampton Gazette and our own indoor bowler Peter Chiffins, has been very strongly supported by WPBC which now has three teams in the first division. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams consolidated their positions and Tim Baldwin’s ‘C’ team came second in Division 2 thus winning promotion. Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
On the 17 August Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club hosted the Two Wood Open Triples. Although the number of entries was down again this year, the competition was well supported by our own members. Three of our own teams of Peter Pullan,Ted Cripps and Paul Wilson, all reached the final play-offs. The winners were again Peter Pullan’s team; consisting of George Rhodes, and Richard Calvert. The ladies team was June Lewis, Sue Gubbins and Marlene Hancock. Runners up were Ted Cripp’s team and third place were Paul Wilson’s team. Once again thanks go to Gerry Shallis for his efforts and well-arranged schedule in organising this great day of bowling.

Malcolm Gilbey ‘C’ Team Report Around four years ago, three or four of the clubs ‘spooners’ approached the then men’s playing committee to ask that the club apply to the Littlehampton Gazette League (LGL) to have a third team entered into the outdoor competition. We were granted permission and three years ago finished third in our first year of league bowls. Last year we won the third division by fourteen shots and went up into division two. This season, after a magnificent effort by all team members we finished our first season in division two with 109 points and came second to the deserving winners – East Preston ‘A’ who won this league with 124 points. With the help again of Peter Pullan (as assistant team selector) we were able to pick two hundred and eighty-eight members to represent our club in these games. Many of these league games had the luxury of at least four named reserves for each match. Without the support of three hundred and seventy-two club members we would not have been able to complete our fixtures and to all of those members who offered your services Peter and I thank you. I sincerely hope these numbers continue next season when we take on the ‘might’ of our other two teams in division one of the LGL competition. Look out gentlemen; we are after your blood. From statistics kept on our games, I would like to congratulate Malcolm Gardiner on being our ‘bowler of the Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
year’ with his fifteen wins (eleven of them as top rink) with only two losses. He was closely followed by myself with fourteen wins (ten of them as top rink) and two losses. Followed by Keith Wadhams with thirteen wins (nine of them as top rink) and two losses. Perhaps if we three had not had a couple of games off we may have got more points? Who knows! I would like to congratulate last year’s top bowler Terry Urben for making himself available for all eighteen league games, as did Dennis Dixon and Peter Pullan. The policy of trying to keep the same club members in teams seems to have paid off and I hope that the proposed new team selector will be able to continue with this policy. On that point and as I am about to embark on a new club job of being the men’s playing committee secretary, I have decided to stand down from running the ‘C’ team and invite the floor to accept Peter Pullan to be ably assisted by Dennis Dixon, to be the recorded ‘C’ team selectors. I wish to place on record my sincere thanks to all the twenty-nine players we eventually used this season. Without your help we would not have got to the Division we will be playing in next year. I would also like to congratulate Malcolm Gardiner, Colin Johnson, Keith Wadhams (and myself) for obtaining a ‘hotshot’ last June on our tenth end in our match against West Tarring. That’s a hot shot for the ‘C’ team two years running. To all club members who supported us throughout the year – many thanks. Let’s hope we can continue the good work next season and take scalps from teams who will not expect the strength of this so called third team. Team spirit and commitment will prevail if we continue in the vein we have produced over the past three years. Finally I wish to place on record my own thanks to Peter for all his tact and good humour in putting up with me over these years and I hope the team keeps together and produces results I know you can achieve. Winter well gents, and see you on the green next year, god willing.

Ladies’ Section The ladies played their final league match away to Norfolk which they lost overall but won on one rink picking up two points. They played three friendlies, 2
PAVILION POST one away to Norfolk which they lost, one at home to Lancing which they won and one against the men which they lost but did win on one rink. I would like to end my year by saying how much I have enjoyed being the ladies captain and would like to thank all the ladies for their support; this has contributed to a successful year. We are beginning to get better results, more ladies are entering county competitions and this coming indoor season we are entering the indoor league again. Playing against the bigger clubs will help to improve our game. I would also like to thank the men who played in the mixed Egham Trophy competition last year in which we had a first round success, Bennie and Jim Harrington for giving their time to umpire our county competitions throughout the year and everybody around the club who have all been so nice and helpful to me. I can’t end without thanking Carol Artley who has made a great job of match secretary having to start from scratch when the former post holder left and; I could not have got through the year without Julie Woods (my Vice Captain) who has supported me every step of the way. She will make a very good ladies’ captain next year.
Ann Button Ladies’ Captain.
Planetbowls I am pleased to say we now have fiftytwo entries at the moment for the th th tournament on Saturday 8 - Sunday 9 November and I know that there are still more to come, so it looks like we will be over target on the original plan of sixtyfour. If we are over-subscribed then we could well start on Friday night with the local entries, instead of practice sessions. It is also planned that on the Saturday evening whilst the competition is progressing, there will be musical entertainment in the lounge and a possible curry/spag boll or lasagne, but this is yet to be confirmed. Play on the Saturday will start at noon, so members will still have the opportunity to have a rollup, but if the rinks are not utilised we will no doubt start earlier. We have players entered from Cornwall, Devon, Bristol, Oxford, Essex and Kent, as well as some very useful local bowlers. It also looks like we will have a least one Commonwealth Gold Medallist participating and Aero Bowls will be
present with their stand as they were for the outdoor tournament. It is unfortunate that the men have a league fixture with Worthing on the Sunday that Worthing will not rearrange, so it is my intention to play as many club members early on, so if they are knocked out they will become available for the league fixture. I am therefore asking that team members and the manager work together with this situation, so that we are able to field the strongest team possible for this fixture. There will be no car park restrictions so spectators will be welcome throughout the weekend. I have had several members offering their services for marking but would always welcome more just to cover any shortfall.
Warwick Davis Men’s Autumn Meeting
Election of officers – all unopposed: Captain Edward Cripps Vice Captain Vacant Match Secretary Geoff Pratt Comp Secretary Gerry Shallis Green Ranger Keith Wadhams Playing Secretary Tim Baldwin An informal discussion then proceeded with the meeting closing about 9pm.
Editor A Question of Law I have dealt with instances lately where players have sauntered up the rink towards the head after delivering their bowl, only to find themselves stranded half way when their bowl came to rest and thereby interfering with the player on the mat to whom possession of the rink had transferred.
Possession of the rink Around fifty members attended the Men’s Autumn Meeting held in the th lounge at Pavilion on Wednesday 17 September 2014 at 7pm. Don Elliot the playing director opened the meeting and the minutes of the last meeting were agreed. Ted Cripps; the men’s captain, read his report to the meeting that included the success of Pavilion in the LGL and the disappointment of having to cancel some twenty friendly matches due to lack of support from members, both men and women. Ted went on to acknowledge the help and support of his wife Pat; without whom he could not have performed his captaincy, which met with applause. Ted informed the meeting that he would continue as captain during the indoor season if nobody came forward to take over, but would not continue beyond that without a vice-captain. Don Elliot then addressed the meeting regarding the lack of anyone willing to take on jobs the likes of vice-captain, for the good of the club but seemed to get nowhere. Arthur White, Paul Wilson and Tim Baldwin briefed the meeting on the successes of the ‘A’ ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams in the LGL. Gerry Shallis gave his report as Competition Secretary. He reported a relatively trouble free year; with exception to sloppy keeping of score cards and abuse of extensions for competitions. Support for a number of competitions is still waining. Gerry informed the meeting that he will be standing down next year. Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC

Possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. As soon as each bowl comes to rest, possession of the rink will transfer to the opposing player or team after allowing time for marking a toucher as soon as it comes to rest. If the umpire, either by their own observation or on appeal by one of the skips or opponents in Singles, decides that the players in possession of the rink are being interfered with, annoyed or distracted in any way by their opponents, the umpire should, on the first occasion, warn the offending player in the presence of the skip and advise the manager or the coach when they are present that a warning has been given. On each occasion after this, the umpire should have the last bowl played by the offending player or team declared dead. If that bowl has disturbed the head, the opponent should choose whether to: Replace the head; Leave the head as altered; or Declare the end dead.

PAVILION POST Touring Club The Summer Tour to Dawlish Warren The long range weather forecast looked rather ominous a couple of weeks before the commencement of the summer tour to Dawlish Warren, but it gradually improved and we eventually had wall to wall sunshine for the duration of the five day holiday. Unfortunately two couples had to pull out of the tour due to illness. We hope that Arthur and John both make a full recovery, sooner rather than later and be able to join the forthcoming tour to Warners Bembridge in November. The tour to Dawlish Warren got off to a good start with the coach from Bennett’s of Newton Abbott arriving spot on time, enabling us to leave the club by 9.15am as planned. Two couples decided to make their own way for one reason or another. Our first match en-route to Dawlish was at Bridport, Dorset, where we played Bridport Bowling Club. We received a brilliant reception from the members, who had prepared a spectacular Ploughman’s Lunch for us.
Bridport Bowling Club
The match against Bridport proved to be very competitive, the hosts winning four rinks to Pavilion’s two. The green, that is maintained by members, was in very good condition considering the time of the season and a credit to the volunteer green-keepers. After the match the coach made its way on to the comfortable Langstone Cliff Hotel at Dawlish Warren, our base for the tour. In the meantime however one of the couples who were making their own way had their own drama, insofar as in the rush to continue the journey ‘Ant’ as we’ll call him to avoid any further embarrassment, inadvertently locked his car keys inside the car boot and found himself up the creek without a paddle, as though to speak. Ant and his wife went to neighbouring Morrison’s where they bought some snacks that they ate sitting on the
childrens’ swings adjacent to the car park, whilst awaiting the arrival of an auto-locksmith. Their luck was still running low though as Mrs A’s sausage roll had little or no filling. Panic started to set in as the colder night air beckoned. The locksmith eventually arrived after a long couple of hours and managed to gain access to the car boot without causing any damage but; at a heavy price I would add!! The sorrowful couple eventually got to the hotel about 1015pm; too late for dinner, albeit they were offered the option of having a sandwich.
Not even the cameo appearance of Pavilion’s John Westlake, who had just arrived on holiday that morning, could have influenced the outcome. Yet again, the green was a credit to the volunteer green-keepers of the club. Day three we were guests of Dawlish Marina Bowling Club, whose members gave us the expected customary warm Devon welcome.
Dawlish Marina Bowling Club
The Veranda at The Langstone Cliff Hotel
Embarrassingly, they also received a standing ovation and applause from their fellow tourists at breakfast the following morning. There was yet another mishap on the first day however, another tourist had forgotten to pack his club shirts, but luckily Tim came to his rescue, lending the defaulter a spare shirt. Day two saw us visit Dawlish Bowling Club situated on The Lawns in the centre of the picturesque town of Dawlish, where we again received a warm welcome. Again, bowls wise it turned out to be a poor day for the tourists as the host romped away, comprehensively winning four rinks to Pavilion’s two. Once again the good company of our hosts, the spectacular ambience of Dawlish and the passing spectators, all made for an enjoyable afternoon in the baking temperature.
The ensuing match was played in good friendly spirit, with wall to wall sunshine throughout the afternoon. Marina’s green was not so easy to read, albeit it was in very good condition considering there were only a couple of weeks of the season left. However the hosts won four of the six rinks; but Pavilion Tourists won overall by ten shots. On our last day, we were visitors to The Den Bowling Club on the seafront at Teignmouth, where we again received that warm Devon welcome from the members. After a somewhat dismal start to the day weather-wise, the weather again broke with wall to wall sunshine throughout the afternoon.
The Den Bowling Club Teignmouth
Dawlish Bowling Club, The Lawn Dawlish
It was not wholly surprising that we lost the match, seeing as how the hosts fielded an England hopeful and a regular national player, who skittled us off whenever we were holding shot on our rink; at least we doubled our score on the last end to make six. Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
The green maintained by the local council, looked very tired with bare patches through a lack of rain; and divots spread across the green especially the outer rinks, more than likely the result of players bouncing bowls, as was evident that afternoon. The match was played in a friendly atmosphere, as we had experienced all week with lots of banter and laughter all round, passing spectators, all that led to a pleasant afternoon’s bowling. The final outcome was a win by the hosts by two shots, whilst Pavilion won three rinks and a draw; so Pavilion’s 4
PAVILION POST captain of the day Clyde Fordyce declared the match a draw. Pavilion member Roger Burgess who was holidaying in Teignmouth happened to be walking pass the green quite unaware of our match, also made a cameo appearance to wish us well. Throughout the tour Ted Cripps continued with his relentless campaign to issue certificates and fines for wrong biases not only for the tourist, but also the home teams as well. This caused great hilarity amongst our hosts and was warmly received. After dinner on the final evening of the tour organiser Tim Baldwin made presentations to Jim Saunders for being the top men’s player, Jim having been in the top Pavilion rink on all four days and Pat Cripps for being the top lady player, having been in the top Pavilion rink on three days. Tim forever the entertainer, then went on to act as judge and jury to penalise those tourist who had committed perceived misdemeanours or other indiscretions during the week, such as a £1 fine awarded to a lady tourist for alleged cheating in one of the raffles, by picking both a blue ticket and a pink ticket when the blue ticket was intended solely for the home team and; by doing so it was considered that the lady concerned had doubled her chances to win a prize, a £1 fine also to another for bubbling her, a £1 fine for failing to remember to pack club shirts, a £2 fine for acting in a careless or negligent manner thereby depriving his wife from enjoying the company of fellow tourists etc. etc., All the dues were ravenously collected by Ted, around £85 in all; including donations, for the Kent & Sussex Air Ambulance charity.. This was really a hilarious and entertaining way to end the tour. Albeit it short and sweet, the holiday was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and a resounding success for Tim, this being his first tour as organiser. A big thank you to Tim, Tricia and Don for all their hard work.
Warner’s Bembridge If there are any members who would like to join the indoor tours to Warners th Bembridge for a four night stay on 24 nd November 2014 and 2 March 2015 who have not already made their interest known, please let Tim Baldwin know as soon as possible so the necessary arrangements can be made. Also would those who have already registered their interest, let Tim have a list of their teams.

Thank you To all the players who assisted me in becoming the Top Lady Player. Without you all it wouldn’t have been possible.
Pat Cripps Bar & Catering Review Autumn 2014 The accounting year for the bar is the same as the club itself, May of one year to the end of April the following year. Below I have set out the annual takings for five complete years, 2009/10 to 2013/14 and these make it clear why bar profitability is a chronic problem. Please note that the 2013/14 figures are provisional and subject to a final audit before presentation; as part of the full accounts, at the AGM in October. NB - Takings literally means the total money taken over the bar. From that sum must be deducted three elements:
VAT - paid to HM Revenue & Customs. Wages - paid to our salaried bar staff. Cost of stock - paid to the relevant suppliers.
2009/10 = £75,496 takings / average of £6,291 per month. 2010/11 = £69,721 takings / average of £5,810 per month. 2011/12 = £68,058 takings / average of £5,671 per month. 2012/13 = £66,202 takings / average of £5,516 per month. 2013/14 = £61,562 takings / average of £5,130 per month. The modern trend towards drinking at home using cheap supermarket bought products, has hit small clubs hard and we are not immune as the above figures clearly illustrate. Once you take VAT, wages and the cost of stock into account then realistically the bar does well to break even. Fortunately, we are not dependant on bar profit to sustain the club and while it is important that the bar is run efficiently, its role is to provide a service to
Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
members and our guests rather than be a ‘money-spinner’. Special events like Wiggy's Plate and Planet Bowls are imperative bar and kitchen revenue streams.
Questionnaires My thanks to the seven club members who completed the questionnaire circulated earlier this year about the bar / catering service. With circa three hundred members at that point it means that 2% of members were prepared to spare a few moments to share ideas / views on the bar / catering operation. I will endeavour to address some points below: 1) Cost of stock and ‘excessive profits’ over the last twelve months we have changed providers for alcohol and bottled gas in order to ensure we get the most competitive wholesale price. However, because we consume such modest volumes we do not qualify for the discounts offered to large, successful outlets. Indeed we are so small that we cannot deal direct with a brewery and instead use an agent. Nevertheless, our bar manager has been able to negotiate some reductions and continues to ensure we are fairly charged for what we order. But unless we suddenly start to sell greatly increased volumes, we are stuck with the wholesale pricing structure we have. Please remember that unlike most other clubs who operate with a volunteer bar team, we pay our staff and that is reflected in the retail price of everything. 2) Why not buy cheap product from supermarkets? A fair question and one that I researched before the summer. It soon became apparent that offers vary from supermarket to supermarket and that in particular can / bottle size is key. We sell large cans / bottles (beer) or standard measures for alcohol and charge accordingly. The supermarkets generally source smaller cans / bottles when offering special deals - it follows that while we could buy some of that product the pricing of it becomes complex because we would be selling a smaller quantity than our usual measures / can size. In short it wouldn't really provide members with cheaper options. 3) Could the kitchen or bar be open all day to provide an extended service to members? Another good question firstly Temptations already work extensive hours and understandably were not prepared to remain open in the afternoon when they would probably sell very little. We could keep our bar open and on special match days when enhanced 5
PAVILION POST custom is likely we do precisely that. However, to routinely keep the bar open throughout each day would cost circa £8,000 in additional salary per year - the equivalent of twenty full members subscriptions. I made enquiries within the club but couldn't establish any wider demand for extended bar opening. That fact coupled with the added cost means that the bar / kitchen will continue with their normal hours. A further suggestion made verbally was to permit some public use of the bar and kitchen in order to boost income. Our licence is a club licence whereby only members and signed in guests can purchase alcohol under the terms of the licence, therefore we cannot open to general public. Being a private members club with that control over access helps to underscore the convivial atmosphere throughout the club. Even If we could ‘go public’ do we really want to have just about anyone coming in? I think most members would say not and so that idea has not progressed.
Cancelled matches This is strictly a playing matter, but cancelled matches have an obvious impact on revenue for the bar and in particular the kitchen. This year we scheduled twenty-six more games than in 2013 including nineteen home meal matches compared to fifteen in 2013. Sadly, that program proved too stretching for many members and consequently we have cancelled or reduced rinks in at least a dozen games to date. That diminishes income for the bar and kitchen and with the latter we have to take cancellation charges into account. If a home game is cancelled within twelve days of the match date we are liable for 50% of the full cost, if the game is cancelled within six days of the match date we must pay 100% of the cost. Presupposing a six rink match that means: £336 for meal matches £192 for snack matches £72 for tea and biscuit games. Please note that those charges form part of the existing contract between Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club Ltd and Temptations Club Catering Ltd. However, these charges predate both your existing board of directors and the current caterers; having been inherited from a much older contract. Charges may well be discussed as part of any renewed contract, but as a club we were rightly concerned about paying out for catering not used because
games had been cancelled within twelve or six days of the match date. Consequently, as player availability became an acute problem during this outdoor season I asked both captains to ensure that availability sheets were published at least twenty-eight days before each game. The position could then be reviewed fourteen days before the match date and if there was little prospect of a team being pulled together, the game should be cancelled. The captains were allowed discretion, but asked to err on the side of cancelling early and avoiding costs. I am very grateful to Ted and Ann for their understanding during the outdoor season. Hopefully, the situation will be alleviated once we move indoors with fewer games and more players available - but if problems persist then early cancellations will still apply. All members can help to avoid that; and help the captains; bar and kitchen, by putting their names down early for as many games as they can manage. In conclusion I will present a full report on bar / catering at the AGM, but thought it sensible to share an update now. If anyone has ideas / comments then please contact me on 01903 700662 or email me at terryurben@hotmail.com or leave a note in my pigeon hole. Finally, many thanks to all members who regularly support the bar and kitchen. Without your loyal custom the services really would be in jeopardy.

Enjoy Lunch Out Lunchtime Specials My wife and I often lunch out at Pavilion during a shopping expedition to good old sunny Worthing. We dropped into the club one Friday late in August; and were surprised to see that the special was Beef Wellington served with Herbie potatoes and peas; an enjoyable meal and well worth the slightly higher cost. If only half of the membership were to lunch out at the club once a month, that would help to ensure the future of this under used facility.

Please note the contact details relate to West Sussex and the contact details for East Sussex and Brighton and Hove can be found in the NHW handbook on the Sussex Police website. ‘I would be grateful if you could put out a warning in the Worthing area via NHW concerning the activities of doorstep callers offering jet wash roof cleaning services. They are currently operating in the ‘West Tarring’ area. In one instance an elderly resident was charged £6,000 for this work and in another the customer was ‘offered’ a lift to the bank to get the money out. Quite apart from the risk of the elderly and vulnerable being overcharged and intimidated in to allowing this work to be carried out, the advice of the CTMA (Concrete Tile Manufacturers Association) is:‘On no account should a high pressure water jet be used to clean off moss and lichen growths from concrete tiles. This will result in erosion of the surface thereby reducing the potential lifespan of the roof tile.’ For further information visit
