Temptations Quit
Excerpt from the July 2018 Fixture Card
I learned to my disappointment a few days ago, that Dave and Yvonne of Temptations, have decided to move on to pastures anew, after some fifteen years at Pavilion. They have apparently tendered notice to the secretary of their rd intention to leave Pavilion on 23 August 2018. During the years that Temptations have catered for us, Yvonne in particular, has contributed a great deal towards the club in many ways, assisting with the organising of large functions, sponsoring raffles etc. I am sure you would like to join me in thanking Yvonne and Dave for all they have done for the club over the years and wish them well and every success with any new venture. No doubt poor patronage from club members during mid-week has not helped the situation. Members have

Coaching News At the open weekend in April the club managed to interest ten new people to try bowls. Of those ten, eight have finished their coaching and have already joined the club and the remaining two will be joining for the winter season. So I think we can safely say that the coaching team managed a 100% conversion rate. We would like to welcome to the club the following new members:
Anne Morrey Graham Morrey John Morrey Antony Beale Michael Beale Alan Garrard, Peter Horton and Brian Stacey.
Susan Marsh, Patricia Hanks will be finishing off their course before the winter and then joining. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome them all to the club and hope they will enjoy their bowling outdoors and indoors at the best club in Sussex. On Wednesday 4th July we will be welcoming Worthing Rotary for a morning of bowls followed by a buffet th lunch and on the 10 July we welcome Broadwater Baptist Church at 6pm for an evening of bowls followed by a buffet. We hope that we will be able to get some interest from these two organisations and hope that some of them will go on to enrol for coaching sessions and join the club.
PAVILION POST Coaching tip for the outdoors, when you bowl indoors it is usually a fairly relaxed delivery as you do not have to put in too much energy to get to a full length jack. When bowling outdoors, most people’s delivery changes when having to bowl to a full length jack particularly on a heavy wet green they put in an enormous amount of effort and energy. Then the style of the delivery changes and all the effort makes it hard work. Try to keep that indoor delivery style and then swing your delivery arm further back and allow the speed and momentum of the arm and the step forward to provide the required forward progression of the bowl up the rink. Important to remember the golden rule is try not to bend your wrist at the point of delivery as this will create a flick and your weight will be all over the place. This needs to be practiced, but never during a match, make sure you get on the rink on your own and set up three jacks, start with the shortest jack on the 23 metre line, then about 28 metres and progress to a full length jack. The important thing is to make sure you do not change your style of delivery to get the different lengths.

Crime Prevention TSB Phishing There has been a sharp rise in fraudsters sending out fake text messages (smishing) and phishing emails claiming to be from TSB. The increase in the number of reports corresponds with the timing of TSB’s computer system update, which resulted in 1.9 million users being locked out of their accounts. Opportunistic fraudsters are using TSB’s system issue to target people with this type of fraud. Since the start of May there have been 321 phishing reports of TSB phishing made to Action Fraud. This is an increase of 970% on the previous month. In the same reporting period, there have been 51 reports of cybercrime to Action Fraud which mention TSB – an increase of 112% on the previous month. Fraudsters are commonly using text messages as a way to defraud unsuspecting victims out of money. Known as smishing, this involves the victim receiving a text
message purporting to be from TSB. The message requests that the recipient clicks onto a website link that leads to a phishing website designed to steal online banking details. Although text messages are currently the most common delivery method, similar communications have been reported with fraudsters using email and telephone to defraud individuals. In several cases, people have lost vast sums of money, with one victim losing £3,890 after initially receiving a text message claiming to be from TSB. Fraudsters used specialist software which changed the sender ID on themessage so that it looked like it was from TSB. This added the spoofed text to an existing TSB message thread on the victim’s phone. The victim clicked on the link within the text message and entered their personal information. Armed with this information, the fraudsters then called the victim back and persuaded them to hand over their banking authentication code from their mobile phone. The fraudsters then moved all of the victim’s savings to a current account and paid a suspicious company.
Protect Yourself: Don’t assume an email or text is authentic: Always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Phone numbers and email addresses can be spoofed, so always contact the company directly via a known email or phone number (such as the one on the back of your bank card).
Clicking on links/files Don’t be tricked into giving a fraudster access to your personal or financial details. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected text or email. Remember, a genuine bank will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your full PIN or password. If you have received a suspicious TSB email, please do not respond to it, report it to us: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report _phishing and also forward it to emailscams@tsb.co.uk
Every Report Matters. If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, report it to us online or by calling 0300 123 2040. Visit Take Five and Cyber Aware for more information about how to protect yourself online.

Warner Bowls Bonanza Bembridge 2019 The club will be travelling to Warner, Bembridge, Isle of Wight in early 2019 for their bonanza bowls extravaganza. I have been able to book forty five rooms for this four day competition. For all those who attended last time, you can have the same rooms you had at that time, if you wish them. For new members and/or friends you can have the choice of rooms. Warner has made a business decision to grade their rooms under the headings standard, signature, and royale. Additionally, these rooms may have a patio, seaview or balcony and therefore are chargeable at different rates. I have been able to secure various rooms of these ilks and have charts of costs for them. Unfortunately I have not been able to standardise charges so that we all pay the same rate, and like last year, we will be charged individually for each room. The bonanza five day (four nights) stay will be from Monday 25th February 2019 through to Friday 1st March 2019. Our charges will incur additional costs for the ferry and for the bowls bonanza competition we are playing. The bowls charge will be £27 per entry, and the ferry charge will be at £5 per head. This means your charge will be room costs plus £32 per bowler, and room costs plus £5 per non bowler. We are able to eat in the same area each day, and I generally arrange tables to enable friends to be together during

PAVILION POST meal times. For all those husbands who wish to sit elsewhere, please let me know, and I will arrange with the hotel to have you placed elsewhere in the dining area. More seriously, those bowling will need to be in pre-arranged teams of four. It will therefore be necessary to arrange teams in advance of attending the bonanza which this year will be a winning pot of £1,500. Well worth winning, as other club members know. We as a club have won this competition the last two years - so let's keep this history going. I will be placing a notice for this bowls holiday on the wall in the usual place in the clubhouse in early July, and would ask all who wish to attend this fun week to place their names on the list to enable me to allocate rooms and advise Warner of our expected numbers. For all those of you who have never been before I can promise you a fun week, and for all those who have been before I can promise you that I will not verbally abuse you too much over the time we are on the island. Hope to read all the usual suspects are wishing to attend this week. More nearer the time.

Social Update
Social Director’s Report Well here we go again, due to the continuing lack of support from our members, yet another cancellation, this time the proposed visit to Brooklands Motor Museum in Weybridge. The past year or so has been very disappointing. We on the social committee have tried very hard to engage with you, but to no avail. As a consequence we will only present two outside events, notably THEATRE and RIVER CRUISE and hopefully these will continue to draw your support. Internal offerings will be judged on the interest and support shown. But as recent results are assessed the likelihood of retaining an active social committee seems rather remote. We will offer another shuffle board, which seems popular and probably another Bingo so the decision lays with you our members. Do you want a social committee as active and hardworking as those now in office, or is it bowls only? Incidentally all future offerings will be ticketed, no more lists on the noticeboard, you like, you purchase a

ticket. Why this change you may ask? The recent bingo evening, we had seven persons not in attendance notwithstanding their names were listed. As a result we paid in advance for seven suppers. Remember the adage ‘use it or lose it ‘ very wise and relevant. Finally why not begin supporting your club now and purchase a ticket for our th 70 anniversary barbeque. The seven piece band are a delight, the food will be great, the atmosphere will be electric and the weather ?? Hope to see you in attendance. Tickets £10 from the bar or office.

VACANCIES As we head towards the club’s annual general meeting there seems to have been little or no interest shown by members in putting their names forward to stand for election as a club director. As it stands at present, two current directors are not seeking re-election and there is already an existing vacancy for a director with a responsibility for the bar and catering.
