well as reduction in rinks etc. on their part. Whilst thanking all of you who sign up for the ‘Friendly’ matches I would like to ask if, having put your name on the ‘availability’ sheet that you check the teams selected sheet for confirmation that you are playing and to ‘sign-off’ your name. I check this sheet to make sure that I have time to twist an arm to take your place if you have to withdraw. Only having ten to fifteen minutes prior to the game to find a replacement makes life extremely difficult. Also, on this topic, if you have to drop out of a match can you please strike through your name with a single line? If you obliterate your name I may well be ringing you to see if you are available to play. Luckily my wife Pat has come to the rescue on several occasions to make up the numbers. There are only seven or eight fixtures remaining before the close of the season, so please continue to lend your support by putting your names down for selection.

Word From the Bridge
Well the end of the indoor season is looming on the horizon and I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the nucleus of members who have regularly supported me by making themselves available for selection to play in our friendly matches. However despite some close calls, I have managed to field sides and met our obligations on most fixtures, albeit occasionally by reducing rinks etc., There have been a couple of cancellations from visiting clubs, as

The ladies have won two more county league matches against Adur 86-83 and Horsham 98-68. From each match we picked up eight points and had two winning rinks. Our county teams have progressed to the next rounds. The Unbadged Triples team of Ann Button, Jacky Pearson and Marlene Hancock won 20-15 against Eastbourne and now play Julie Woods, Marina Crayston and Esme Clough in the quarter finals. Congratulations to all the ladies who have won top rink recently - Esme Clough, Pat Edmonds, Jean Garwood, Elizabeth Haynes, Jacky Pearson, Sharon Pratt, Mary Stemp, Carol Tillett.

League match, National and County competitions Worthing Pavilion continued their unbeaten run in the county league with a hard fought 117-117 draw at Falaise Bowls Club in Hastings.
PAVILION POST Pavilion led after the early exchanges but with four ends to go found themselves fifteen shots behind, but a strong finish saw the match tied and the points shared 5½ per side. In the national championships Keith Renwick defeated Simon Davey 21-6 in the all Pavilion area final. Renwick now progresses to the national finals in Melton Mowbray in April. In the national triples Mark Strong, Alex Paine and Ray Leggett progressed to the Area Final with a 16-15 win over Keith Beckett from the Isle of Wight. Strong now takes his triple to Horsham I.B.C., for the chance to join Renwick at Melton Mowbray. Pavilion also still have representation in the quarter finals of the singles, pairs, unbadged singles, triples and fours so are hopeful of a strong finish to what is already proving to be one of the best seasons ever for the club.
John Frew Pairs Tournament for Club Members As you will have probably read last month there will be an Outdoor Pairs Tournament, held over the Spring Bank th nd Holiday weekend 30 April – 2 May 2016 open solely to club members (Summer and Winter) (Men, Ladies or Mixed)) The entry fee will be £20.00 per team that will include a kitchen voucher for £2.50 per person. Please make cheques for the entry fee payable to me and left in my pigeon hole, or cash can be deposited with the secretary, but make sure your name is posted somewhere. Prize money will be based on a minimum of twenty-four pairs. Winners will receive £150.00, losing finalists £100.00, third place £70.00 and fourth place £40.00. Based on twenty-four entries play would be on the Saturday, with the finals on the Sunday, but if we reach thirty-six entries, then play would be on Saturday for some and Sunday for others, with the finals being held on the Monday. The tournament is to be on a round robin basis, with a minimum of five games of six ends in duration each day. Conditions of Play
No visiting the head No trial ends, but only one shot on the first end Handicaps will be taken into account and the shot difference
calculated on one third of joint handicap with a maximum allowance of three shots. Remaining five ends will be normal play but still no visiting the head Top teams in each league qualify for finals and depending on number of entries, so some second teams will also qualify based on shot difference.
Time marches on, so full details will be posted on the notice board from March onwards allowing you ample time to enter your teams, so start organising your pairs; of any combination, for the weekend. If you show your preferred day to play I will try to accommodate you. If you are a single player then we might be able to organise a pair, so if you are having this problem leave a note in my pigeon hole and I will do my best to help you. Please reserve these dates on your calendar /diary and join in this event. If successful we could make this an annual event and I may be able to persuade Ian Hart to provide a suitable Trophy.
Warwick Davis
will also be assisting during the course to gain experience.

A Question of Law Displacement of a Bowl at Rest It has been brought to my attention that some club members habitually disturb the head before their opponents have agreed the final tally of shots conceded. Quite apart from the yielding player having to agree the number of shots conceded before the declaration can be made to the skips and the seconds, the head should also not be disturbed until that process is completed. The WBIC Laws of the Sport of Indoor Bowls Law 32b (iii) covers the displacement of a bowl at rest by a player i.e.
Junior Section Congratulations to James Brennan in winning his semi-final in the County under 25's against Ajay Morphett the score 22-11.
Coaching Update Our two members Jacky Pearson and Keith Bowden who have been under training for the past two months to become coaches, have successfully passed their Level One examination with flying colours. They will now join the coaching team and work alongside our more experienced coaches for the next twelve months, when hopefully they will be ready to take their Level Two examination in May 2017. We will start coaching two new associate members within the next week, both of whom seem very keen to start their coaching and take up the game of bowls. One of our new coaches

If a bowl at rest or a toucher in the ditch is displaced by a player, the opposing skip shall restore the bowl or toucher as near as possible to its former position.
Prematurely kicking the bowls back before the score is properly declared amounts to a displacement of a bowl or bowls at rest. The opposing skip can therefore restore the head to as near as to what it was; virtually as he sees fit and his opposite number has no say in the process.
Touchers It never ceases to amaze me that some highly experienced players do not seem to have any inkling of the law appertaining to the marking of touchers. A recent friendly match at Pavilion saw a visiting skip put the jack and his bowl into the ditch. His third said ‘I’ll nominate that as I can’t be bothered to get down to mark it’ or words to that effect. The position of the toucher was such that marking it would not have caused it to fall, or alter the head, so it should have been marked.
2
PAVILION POST Nominating that bowl as a toucher would have no bearing on the outcome of the end if it was not marked before the next bowl came to rest. As it so happened, when the next bowl came to rest the bowl in the ditch had still not been marked and it should have been removed from the ditch as it was then a dead bowl. It is not uncommon for a heavily delivered bowl to clatter into the head scattering bowls everywhere, followed by a desperate debate as to ‘whether this or that bowl’ was a toucher. So much easier just to mark the toucher in the first place.
Editor Touring Club The Touring Club AGM took place th on Wednesday 4 February 2016 as advertised, with a goodly number of tourists in attendance. The ferry passes to those going to Warners, Bembridge at the end of the month were distributed to drivers and the last minute arrangements for this trip finalised. Those members who had yet to pay their balances were asked to give Don their cheques without delay, as the hotel wanted paying.
Summer Tour 2016 A brief discussion then took place regarding the summer tour to Devon th th from Monday 5 – Friday 9 September 2016. There is still space for more members to join the tour that provides good value for money i.e comfortable accommodation with bed, breakfast and evening meal included. Non bowlers are more than welcome to join the tour. We have to finalise this matter with the management of the Langstone Cliff Hotel, so if any more club members are considering this week they need to let me know by placing their details down on the sheet so that I can secure a room for them, otherwise the rooms held for us at the moment will have to be released. Don will be asking those going on the summer tour for their deposits in the not too distant future. Don Elliot presented a breakdown of the touring club’s finances to the meeting.
Spring Tour 2017 There was unanimous agreement that we should yet again visit Warners Bembridge for the knockout tournament that we have attended for the past few years, providing of course that Warners will still be hosting this event.
Summer Tour 2017 Looking ahead to summer 2017 members were invited to give their suggestions of venues to tour. Portugal was one venue briefly mentioned, but apparently this had been muted at a previous meeting some time ago, not getting any support due to members not wishing to fly. Asking what members thought of going to Wiltshire, maybe based at The Milford Hall Hotel in Amesbury, met with overwhelming approval. Tricia and I will reconnoitre the area later on to see what it offers. An acquaintance of mine is going to be the Wiltshire County President during 2017 and may be able to recommend good bowling clubs and facilities in the area. There being no other business the meeting closed at 8.15pm.
Notes from the Directors 1) A working group has been convened to look into plans and proposals for the future of the club. The group will initially consist of Keith Wadhams, John Frew, Dennis Dixon, David Elliott and Tim Baldwin. Members who have ideas or suggestions are asked to speak to Tim Baldwin direct. 2) The club will be manning a stall at the Worthing Rotary ‘Hobbies & Leisure Exhibition’ at the Assembly Hall, 10am – 4pm on th Saturday 5 March 2016. 3) The 200 Club will soon be launched for 2016-17. (Please support your club and win a fortune)
