2014 ‘Wiggy Plate’ th

On Monday 26 May 2014 eighty players representing twenty teams drawn from Portsmouth, Southampton, Chipstead, Sutton Surrey, Croydon, Newdigate, Lindfield, The Witterings, Storrington, Bognor Regis, Pagham, Chichester, Hotham, Southwick, Worthing and new entrants this year from Eastney met at Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club to compete in an open fours competition; better known as ‘Wiggys Plate’. The Tournament was organised by Ray Leggett. The weather was so wet the outside greens were deemed to be unplayable, so the tournament was transferred into the indoor rinks at Pavilion. The tournament was run all day with the final play offs in the early evening for the final position. The play off for third and fourth place was between a team skipped by John Collins(4) against a team skipped by Terry Honnor (3) The play off for first and second was between Bognor skipped by G. and has independent Men’s and Ladies’ Sections. Despite its size the club boasts a playing membership in excess of one hundred and twenty players. From reading information on their website, it would appear that we could well have a competitive match to look forward to!

A Word from the Bridge Monthly Review Friendly Matches Phew what a scorching June we had. I would have thought that the glorious weather would have encouraged more of you to want to play in the friendly matches. However my pleas for more members to make themselves available to play in friendly matches seem to have fallen on deaf ears yet again, as the situation has not improved one iota. With almost every friendly match I am frequently left scratching around for players at the eleventh hour. Since the closing date of the last newsletter, I have had to cancel at least five friendly matches; at home against Newdigate, Middleton, Hayes & District, London Welsh as well as away to Steyning. The Hayes and Welsh fixtures in particular, are long standing and had to be cancelled at short notice, due the lack of members putting themselves forward for selection. Who knows what the future will hold for these fixtures. The Hayes and London Welsh cancellations are likely to cost the club dearly in compensating the caterers; hopefully we will not receive a claim in due course to compensate the visitors’ coach costs. Taking this all on-board, consideration has been given to cancelling a number of forthcoming friendly matches, the first

being the away trip to Byfleet; to avoid the likelihood of having to pay any compensation to the coach firm if we have to cancel the fixture with short notice. The other cancellations will be shown on the club website in due course. Cancelling the new fixtures with clubs like Southwater, Hurstpierpoint and Newdigate; could well result in losing these fixtures in the years to come? Members really do need to wise up and support Pavilion more readily, by making themselves available to play in friendly fixtures, that are vital to the club. Despite the problems in fielding sides last month, Pavilion won all five home matches, whilst losing our only away match to Tarring Priory.

Signing off on team sheets It would make my life a lot simpler if those members who have second thoughts about making themselves available for friendlies, just put a single line through their name. Frequently members typex or otherwise completely obliterate their name on the list. When I subsequently phone around to try to make up numbers, I often find myself telephoning someone who has already obliterated their name on the list. That is just a waste of my time and cost of a telephone call.

Monthly Review Ladies’ Section Despite only having twenty regular outdoor lady players, the ladies have managed to play all their fixtures both league and friendly. This month they have played four league matches winning a home match against Shoreham and gaining all six points, but losing three away matches, one against Middleton, one against East Preston and one against Aldingbourne. They have played four friendly matches; all away; and have won two and lost two. Thank you ladies, for your continued support in putting your names down for these fixtures.

As promised sending you my contact card. Will be telephoning my sister on return from her cruise. I and all members of RHP Bowls Club really enjoyed your clubs hospitality. Give my compliments to the chef on the dinner we received. Keep bowling. I really enjoyed the banter I had with your team, I know you all started to get worried near the end, as our score started to gather pace. Ha! Keep bowling and good health. Yours in bowls

PAVILION POST Planetbowls

Indoor Tournament I am pleased to confirm that Planetbowls will be visiting us again on th th the weekend of 8 and 9 November 2014, for what they have advertised on their web site, as an indoor singles tournament with a maximum entry of sixty-four players. The board have stipulated that play will not start until noon on the Saturday and will run until closing time around 10.30pm. Depending on the number of entries, the same will apply on the Sunday; but hopefully the final will be a little bit earlier, as some competitors will have a long trip home. Prize money will depend on the number of entries and sponsorship, but there will be a minimum prize of £1,000 for the winner with a minimum of £500 for the runner-up. I hope that as last time, many members will support this event by either playing, marking or stewarding. I would also emphasise that these events help the kitchen as well as the bar revenues and in the long run helps to sustain membership fees. The tournaments also help to maintain Worthing on the bowls map. Entry forms will be available from the end of July and will be stored in the yellow rink binders.

Warwick Davis Touring Club BEMBRIDGE The deposits for both November and March have now been paid and the lists in the Clubhouse will be removed. We have twenty-six members going in November 2014 and forty-one next March, but if any more members wish to travel with us they will need to contact Warners Bembridge direct, to arrange their ferry and bowling entry. I have requested and numbered the rooms that you all stayed in last time, so hopefully this will resolve all the problems relating to room allocations. With my involvement with Planetbowls and my work commitments, I have decided to stand down with immediate effect. I am glad to say that Tim

Baldwin has agreed to take over and Don Elliot will continuing as treasurer. Many thanks for your support over the past few years.

Match Etiquette At a recent meeting of the Men’s Playing Committee, I raised the matter of the home side buying drinks for the visitors. This is a long-standing tradition and as such is considered to be part of the etiquette of lawn bowls. Some players are finding that with the ever increasing cost of living, the practice of buying a drink for their opposite number after a bowling match has become a cost too far and therefore they are reluctant to participate. Please let me know your views on this matter which may then be included in the next AGM agenda.

Summer Dinner/ Dance A big ‘thank-you’ from your captain to all who attended this function. At the summer Dinner Dance held on 6th June 2014, the ‘Munchers, Movers and Groovers’ attending raised £250 for the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance charity; with a further £50 being raised from the ‘Guess the Celebrity’ scratch draw. Tim Baldwin has my thanks for organising a very well supported raffle, despite the fact that some folk went home with their arms still up behind their backs! We had a fantastic evening with live entertainment from guitarist Peter Bennett and an excellent meal from Temptations Catering. Thank you again for supporting the charity.
