The inimitable and unforgettable Bill Carroll
William ‘Bill’ Carroll 1934-2017 Family, friends and members of Worthing Pavilion packed the Muntham Chapel at Worthing Crematorium on the th afternoon of Tuesday 28 February 2017 for the funeral of Bill Carroll, who sadly passed away at Worthing Hospital on the 7th February 2017 after a relatively short illness. The British Legion was also represented at the service, along with a bugler who played the last post. After the service mourners joined Bill’s family at Pavilion for refreshments and to celebrate his life. Bill was born in Dublin on the 8th June 1934. He came to England in the 1950’s and joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1955. Bill met Bernadette at the end of his service and they were married at Ealing

Abbey, West London in 1960 settling in Ealing. They had two daughters, Sonya and Michelle. Before Bill retired, he worked in the borough parks department as head gardener overseeing all the parks in the Borough. He also demonstrated his green fingered skills in his own garden. Bill joined Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club during the summer of 2012. Bill soon became a popular member of the club and he thoroughly enjoyed his bowling, along with the camaraderie of fellow club members. Bernadette and Bill joined the Touring Club for the 2016 summer tour to Dawlish and his antics provided good entertainment for his fellow tourists, especially after the last evening meal, his laughter was infectious. He will undoubtedly be deeply missed by every member of his family. In the words of his granddaughter Gemma “His twinkling blue eyes and warm smile could light up the darkest of corners”. Our thoughts are with Bernadette and family at this difficult time.

2017 Spring Tour to Bembridge IOW th
On Monday 27 February 2017 forty-five members and guests of the touring club undertook the yearly pilgrimage to Warners’ Coast Hotel at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight to take part in the annual early spring bowling tournament. Despite some issues surrounding the
management of the ferry services, all of the group managed to get to the hotel in good time. Unfortunately Don Elliot missed the 11am service which sailed before waiting ticket holders could board and Warwick Davis also had a close call as he had mislaid his ferry ticket. The weather was not at its best for the journey and the ferry crossing was a little bumpy to say the least. Overall there were thirty-one teams from all over the UK participating in the competition. Sadly a number of our own members had to cry off at the eleventh hour due health issues, but we still fielded eight teams. Tony Fuller consequently found himself without a team, but Warners were able to place him in a local team. This year was one of the most successful for Pavilion with four of our teams i.e. Roger Humphrey, Tim Baldwin, Warwick Davis and Graham Farley, reaching the quarter finals, three of which i.e. Davis, Baldwin and Farley then moved into the semi-finals. Warwick and Tim met in one of the semi-finals, that saw Warwick progress into the finals yet again to face a team from Bromley. Not bad at all for someone who had lost their ferry ticket.
Semi Finalists Graham and Team
The team that have regularly won this competition over the past few years and seen by many as the favourites, did not even reach the quarter final stage this year, being knocked out by Tim Baldwin in the earlier stage. Very satisfying. The Thursday afternoon final was a tight and exciting affair and won by the final bowl of the final end after Warwick delivered a weighted shot; ala Greg Harlow style, that took the jack cleanly into the ditch, with the bowl following it and also promoting another in the bargain. So at last Warwick, Rick, John and Barry picked up the £1,500 winning cheque, despite having dropped seven shots on one end earlier in the match. Well done guys. Also special congratulations to Penny Franklin’s team, the one and only wholly female quartet, who actually won a match. We have already made a provisional booking for the 2018 tournament that th will be from Monday 26 February 2018 nd until Friday 2 March 2018. The price is yet to be established.

PAVILION POST From the Directors’ Meeting
The board received and accepted the resignation of David Thomas, as house director and thanked him for his service to the club over the past years. The board agreed to co-opt Peter Smith as Acting House Director with effect from May board meeting. The board reviewed the subscriptions for 2017/8. Details and forms will be available after the April board meeting. The board reviewed and proposed amendments to the Mem. & Arts, in line with the commitment made at the AGM. The amendments will be checked with the club solicitors and then put to an extraordinary general meeting for acceptance by members. The amended document then has to be submitted to Companies House for final ratification.
The board received an update from ‘the way forward group’. The question of club loans was discussed and a report will be presented by the treasurer at the next meeting
Wanted If anyone has a small bookcase that they no longer require, please see me in the secretaries’ office. We have masses of books that cannot be displayed because of lack of shelf space. OR if anyone would be able to make up some bookshelves to go in the corridor outside the offices, please see me.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS It was disappointing to see that the nd proposed Jazz Night on 22 March 2107 had to be cancelled due a lack of members subscribing to the function. There was only somewhere in the region of sixteen names on the list. The social committee work earnestly to provide functions, so please lend them your support.

Congratulations Well done to Gareth Beven for completing the recent half marathon. Gareth was raising money for The Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Centre. When club members have paid up their sponsorship in full, Gareth hopes to have raised in the region of £500. A great result!!
