And a Final Word from Her

Captain’s Reflections It’s a Final Word from Him The time has come for me to hang up my gloves. Actually I have really enjoyed being captain for the last eighteen months (the things you have to do just for a car park space) I need to say some thank-you’s. Thanks to the committee members for their help and guidance during my term. Thanks to all my usual suspects who helped me out when I was short of players, you all know who you are! Some great memories for me during my term in office: Winning the PC Cup last year  Winning Division One Last year.  Winning all three Divisions this year.  Well done to all the selectors.  Well done to all the Juniors’ coaches. So many people from other clubs have spoken to me about our juniors and all saying the same thing, polite, wellmannered and courteous and all with the right attitude. Their bowling cannot be bad either, getting into finals already. Well done all the juniors. Thanks to Dave and Yvonne (Temptations) for putting up with me. I have now passed my badge of office over to Ted Cripps, who I am sure will

The best thing about my year has been the support that I have received from the members. Everyone has appeared to have a pride in playing for Worthing Pavilion and the recent results show that we all want to win! Last Indoor Season didn’t go too well, we only won two matches out of seventeen! We enjoyed it anyway! During the Summer Season we have done very well. We decided at the beginning of the Season that we would pick three League Teams out of which two teams would play in turn. Most clubs choose their teams in this way, finding that they play better with players to whom they are accustomed. Well it paid off and we finished in third place in the league. At last we didn’t pick up the Wooden Spoon! In our other matches we won fifteen out of twenty-two. That was a great result. I have been helped enormously by Vice-captain Ann and am sure that she

Lady Captain’s Charity Day When I chose ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ as my Charity I had no idea of the support that it would generate. Starting on Finals Weekend, and right through to the following Thursday, raffle tickets were being sold. On the day we had a Fun Game and I was very pleased to see that a good number of players had taken up the challenge to ‘wear something pink’. By the end of the day we had raised £630. What a result! I can’t thank you enough, from the people who donated raffle prizes and cash, to the helpers on the day. The support was fantastic. Your generosity left me quite emotional. Thank you.

Over the past few months we have highlighted and thanked some of the club members who volunteer to carry out various functions within the club for no re-imbursement. This month we would like to acknowledge the contribution given to the club by Alan Muzzell, who has engraved the club trophies after the finals, no easy task. Alan; a former professional engraver; carried out this role for around five or so years, whilst he had the means to do so and thereby saved the club a lot of expense. I understand that Alan has or will shortly have to dispose of his engraving equipment. Thank you Alan.

have to, made the final result inevitable but also fair. From eighteen matches the ‘C’ team finished with thirteen wins and just five defeats; all away from home; one hundred and twenty-three points garnered from a possible one hundred and eighty. The squad look forward to the league th presentation day on the 15 September 2013 and then the sterner challenge that is division two in 2014.

On Thursday 29 August 2013 saw the Pavilion ‘C’ team away to Middleton for their final league match of 2013 and the outcome was as follows :– Humphrey Wadhams Pullan Dixon

With a few regular faces missing and the league title already in the bag, the selectors took the opportunity to rearrange some of the rinks. In time such experimentation may bear fruit, but some determined bowling from bottom of the table Middleton; coupled with a green only just behind Field Place in the list of really tricky away venues you don’t want to visit but

Between early May through to the end of August 2013, Pavilion ‘C’ team played eighteen matches in the Littlehampton Gazette League (LGL). We completed the season winning thirteen of our matches; four of these obtaining the full ten points available; and lost five. Of these five, four were only by two points (four points for and six against) with only one whitewash away to Field Place; the eventual second team in the League. With the help again of Peter Pullan (as assistant team selector) we were able to pick two hundred and eighty-eight members to represent our club in these matches. All but two of the eighteen league games played had the luxury of at least four named reserves for each match. Without the support of four hundred and fifty-one club members we would not have been able to complete our year so successfully and to all those who offered their services Peter and I thank you. We both hope that such co-operation continues in our efforts next season, when we will be in the ‘B’ league of the LGL division two competition. From statistics kept on our games I would like to congratulate Terry Urben on being our ‘bowler of the year’ with his fifteen wins (six of them as top rink) with only two losses. Terry please do not book time off next year, we need you for all games. Terry was closely followed by our senior professional, Peter Pullan (last year’s top bowler) who had thirteen wins (four as top rink) and three losses, followed by Denis Dixon on twelve wins (five as top rink), four losses and one drawn game. Colin Johnson, Alan Page, Ted Cripps, and Graham Farley also did really well with eleven wins,

PAVILION POST and also to be mentioned with ten winning rinks are John Wright, Keith Wadhams, Terry Hallard and myself. We also 'blooded' one of our juniors this year namely James Brennan, well done James! Clearly James and others like him will be the life-blood of our club so keep putting your names forward for selection consideration as and when you can, we need you. As can be seen, we maintained a nucleus of players throughout the season, and I firmly believe this was the reason we eventually completed the year winning the ‘C’ League with one hundred and twenty-three points. Our nearest rivals were Field Place who completed their year with one hundred and nine points with Chichester ‘B’ third with one hundred and five points and Petworth fourth with one hundred and three points. All in all a comprehensive win. Well done to all who played either at home or away. All games were a joint team effort and all players should feel proud of their combined efforts to get us the title. It should also be noted that our team was the first to obtain a hot shot in LGL league competition this year. On the 20th June at home against Maltravers Terry Urben, Colin Johnson, Rick Bauman and Peter Pullan scored eight shots on their third end after being six down on their first end! Brilliant effort lads. Many thanks to all the club members who supported us throughout the year. Let’s hope we can continue the good work next season. Team spirit and commitment will prevail if we continue in the vain we have undertaken over the past three years. Consolidation and then advancement are the aims gentlemen. Winter well.

The Weekend of 7 and 8 of September 2013 saw the finals weekend of Pavilion. The weather held out on Saturday with very little rain, but after a fine start to Sunday morning the weather took a turn for the worse around midday; when the juniors final started in a light shower. At 1.50pm just before the afternoon finals were about to start there was a very heavy shower that delayed the start by twenty minutes. Intermittent and very heavy showers lingered throughout the afternoon, making good bowling very difficult but the players endured everything that the weather threw at them to finish their matches.

Malcolm Gilbey Mixed Squad Evening League After a season of good bowling, good fun, questionable weather and some very close results, the season ended with a win for Team ‘C’ (Peter Woods). In second place was Team ‘E’ (Chris Llewellyn) who closely edged Team ‘D’ (Dave Berry) into third place. Special mention must be made of the youth squad who entered a full and very competitive team that showed great promise for the future. The list is now up for the Indoor season (Thursday nights) and anyone interested please contact Peter Woods

Monday Morning Triples Thursday Morning Australian Pairs and an Individual Aggregate Score both Monday and Thursday mornings, ensuring that everyone who attended had a game. All teams were mixed and selected randomly at the start of the season, resulting in some very close games. The Monday Triples consisted of six teams of five, with each captain ensuring that where possible an equal number of games were played by all. Winners of the Monday Triples were Team ‘B’ comprising: Esme Clough John Murray Richard Berrett Brian Aldridge Bill Parker Runners up Team ‘C’ comprising: David Sessions Silvia Parker Mike Claridge Diana Murray John Holliman With an extremely close finish to this league, (last match, last end, last wood) then a count back on ends won. Well done everyone. Thursday Australian Pairs comprised five teams, with the same format as Monday Triples. The winners were Team ‘G’ comprising: Frank Clough Diana Mur Lois Wallis John Holliman Ben Benfield Runners up were Team ‘B’ comprising: Esme Clough Brian Aldridge John Murray Richard Berrett Ley Elliott

Again a close league won by four points but with only one point separating second and third. The Aggregate played for individual scores of the teams that players were drawn on the day. Only the best seven scores were eligible for counting towards the individual total, all other scores were discounted. The Aggregate winner was John Holliman, with a score of one hundred and twenty winning by three points from Ben Benfield with one hundred and seventeen points and Jim Miles with one hundred and sixteen points. Prizes were presented to the winners and runners up after the final match. The players are requesting that we run the same competitions again next summer, so if you are interested in playing indoors next summer come and join us. Everyone is welcome.

Esme & Frank Clough More Hotshots Further to Terry Urben’s article on Pavilion hotshots in the September newsletter there is a fourth to be added to the record. On 1st June 2013 in the first leg of the Horsham ‘Friendship Cup’ a hotshot was achieved on the fifth end by:Dennis Lindup Bill Carroll Colin Davey and Barry Ledger, Truly, a good year for Pavilion Bowls Club.

Barry Ledger Mens’ Annual Meeting This is a brief synopsis of the Mens’ Annual Meeting held at Pavilion on th Wednesday 18 September 2013 at 7pm and chaired by Terry Urben. Disappointedly only thirty-three members of the mens’ section made the effort to attend the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting held on th 19 September 2012 were agreed and there were no matters arising. The officers gave their reports; Brian Lee briefly recounted the success of the club in the Littlehampton Gazette and congratulated those involved. A

PAVILION POST fuller report appeared in last month’s newsletter. In the absence of Chris Scott, Paul Wilson briefly covered the success of the ‘B’ team, congratulating the members of the team. Timothy Baldwin gave an in-depth review of the ‘C’ team, which appears in full on page 2. Captain Paul Wilson gave an account of how the season had gone for him during his eighteen months captaincy and thanked those who had helped him during his office. Pavilion had won two thirds of their matches and Paul only had to cancel one match, due to lack of support. Paul concluded by congratulating the league team managers; as well as calling on all members to lend their support for incoming captain Edward Cripps. Competition Gerry Shallis started by saying that the internal competitions had gone smoothly, albeit there had been too many late matches; that can cause difficulties; and that he could well have been less sympathetic. The challenger has to give their opponent three dates for the match. Overall there had been an improvement in the completion of score cards, albeit some appalling examples still slipped through. Both the Monday and Tuesday evening leagues would benefit from more teams taking part. If you want to play and haven’t a team put your name on the sheet on the notice board. A review on the mens’ handicaps had been undertaken and consequently they will now range from one up to eight. Gerry also spoke about the club open competitions and the lack of club members entering these competitions particularly the Sunday morning pairs that is now down to twenty-four entries. The Friday evening Invitation fours league had also lost two more teams, leaving just nine teams in the red league and eight in the blue league respectively. Match Secretary Alan Sweetman-Hicks gave a brief resume of the fixtures and how he had tried to avoid double booking matches the same day, but pointed out a couple of unavoidable instances where matches clashed. The increased cost of coach travel had resulted with a drop in the number of clubs from the London area visiting Pavilion. Edward Cripps was elected captain but there was no nomination for a vicecaptain. Alan Sweetman-Hicks Match Secretary

and Gerry Shallis the Competition Secretary were re-elected, unopposed. There were no nominations for the post of Playing Committee Secretary which remains unfilled. The formal meeting concluded about 8-45pm and continued into an informal session. Bennie Bennett kicked the session off by congratulating the league teams and the selectors on winning the three divisions of the LGL. Questions from the floor included whether a fourth team could be entered into the LGL next year, also whether there could be a second league for the Sussex Indoor league. Don Elliott congratulated the league teams and selectors on their victories on behalf of the board. Don then addressed the meeting as to the necessity of members looking at themselves and asking if they could take on a role of being a club officer. He made reference to the number offices that he had held at the club over the years, which he had enjoyed. The meeting closed about 9pm.
