School Involvement Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club makes every effort to promote bowls, especially to the younger generation. For some time WPBC has been getting involved with the local schools by either visiting schools, or entertaining classes at the club. During May pupils from year seven at Davison High School spent the day at Pavilion. In the morning the club coaches explained the basics of bowling to the girls. They then carried out some exercises to get familiar on how to

Students from Davison High School at Pavilion girls. handle the bowls. They then

handle the bowls. Then in the afternoon a competition was held; red teams verses the green teams; the green teams managed a victory. Quote from a member of the school staff:“We had a great day and the girls really enjoyed it. The coaches were brilliant and very patient and encouraging. Hopefully a couple of the girls who showed promise will look into joining up”.

They again followed the formula of having the principles of bowling explained, then some exercises to get the feel of the bowls, followed by a game.

Members are reminded that the New Zealand team taking part in the World Visually Impaired Bowls Championship th th at Beech House Park from 8 -18 July 2013 will be using Pavilion as their base during the tournament. It has been agreed by the board of directors that the visitors can enjoy the club facilities and allowed to practice on the greens at Pavilion. As far as we are aware there will probably be eight competitors and eight assistants in the NZ contingent. We trust that the visitors receive a warm welcome from members.

Scouts Visit Pavilion During the early part of June half the th 8 Worthing Sea Scouts-Starboard troop spent two hours on a Friday evening at Pavilion experiencing bowls and seemed to enjoy themselves.

PAVILION POST As the score line indicated, this was a closely contested match. After fifteen ends we were four down, after eighteen ends three down, then a satisfying finish. This was another occasion where the team had to dig deep to carve out a favourable result - all things considered this was a very good team effort on a challenging afternoon. In the third round we face either Tarring Priory ‘A’ or Chichester ‘A’ away. Pavilion ‘A’ played Chichester ‘A’ at Chichester in the third round of the National Club Two Fours this morning nd 22 June 2013 - results as follows:8th Worthing Sea Scouts after their ‘Bowls Session’

Another excellent all round team performance. The first time pairing of the Beven ‘boyos’ at skip and three worked exceptionally well. Alan Vidler came in as a last minute for Doc Dray who sustained a leg injury whilst playing in the County Fours the previous evening. Vids skipped the rink leading from the front taking it from eight shots down after eight ends to 16-16 after nineteen ends, going on to win by two shots. Thus far we have taken out Chichester ‘B’ in the first round, Tarring Priory in the second round completing a hat trick of wins by overcoming Chichester ‘A’ this morning. Our opposition in the fourth round will be away to either Lindfield or Preston. You may care to note our ongoing successes in the County competitions as follows:Colin Meeney, unbadged singles and Terry Honnor singles are both through to the County quarter finals. In the pairs Johnny Westlake and Barry Whitmore play Brian Lee and Richard Dray for a place in the County quarter finals. We also have two teams in the triples Barry Whitmore, Chris Scott and Merv Hilton - John Westlake, Wiggy Leggett and Roger Faithfull who both play for a place in the County quarter finals; as do Colin Meeney, Peter Bunce,

PAVILION POST Terry Honnor and Richard Dray in the fours. A most impressive all round performance in the name of Worthing Pavilion - I hope ‘all’ will agree!!

Pavilion 73-66 Chichester Pavilion 6pts 4pts Chichester This was an excellent team performance; everyone was up for a win. Chichester had already played and won four matches, dropping only seven out of a total of forty points. This fixture is always keenly contested and the result went some way to making up for a two shot defeat last year.

Pavilion ’A’ v East Preston (Home) 20-16

W.Burrows J.Fairs P.Tandy A.Clarke

Bottom line score Pavilion three wins = 3 points Tarring Priory two wins = 2 points. Another sterling team performance; on a very grey evening and on a ‘sporty’ green. The match was tight throughout and went literally to the wire on the last discipline to finish the Fours. Going in to the last end the rink was one down on the game; we were holding one shot when skip ‘Doc’ Dray delivered his first wood which was a pearler, tickling the jack to potentially give us game and match. Opposing skip Clunky Clarke; despite the fact that he had his ‘lucky’ leprechaun in his pocket; was unable to change the situation and we went on to pick up a spectacular five shots on the last end! Securing a win at any time at Priory; our vocal local rivals; is never easy making this one that much sweeter. We now await the outcome of the match between Chichester and Norfolk

This was the first of three league games scheduled to be played in five days. It proved to be yet another extremely satisfactory all round team performance. Peter Bunce and his boyos digging in deep to score eight shots on two of the last three ends to ensure a win by one shot; securing the all-important two points! We were extremely grateful to Trevor Parker for very kindly stepping in at literally the last minute to cover for a selected player who failed to appear!

This match is always a closely contested fixture against our vocal local rivals. This was another excellent all round performance. After ten ends Pavilion was eight shots up, we then stepped up a gear to go twenty-two shots up after fifteen ends, thirty up after eighteen ends going on to win by thirtyseven shots. All players are to be commended for the very best of good team spirit.

Pavilion 91-60 Bognor Pavilion 10pts 0pts Bognor Today we completed our third league match in five days and secured another win. Last year we played Bognor on an exceedingly windy day and they beat us by ten shots and we only notched up two points! To secure a clean sweep today was very sweet for all concerned. After ten ends we were a mere four shots in front but, once again, all rinks dug deep and went on to win by thirtyone shots. Going into the last end Ron Rebera's rink was four shots in front, but when Ron delivered his first wood he was six down in the head! The ever ‘cool ‘ Ron held his nerve and secured third wood and the rest is history. As always, team spirit and commitment could not be faulted.

Undoubtedly the trickiest green we have had to bowl on in the league this year to date and there was a howling wind to contend with as well. At the outset, things didn't look particularly rosy - we were only one shot up after five ends and many were still finding it very difficult to launch our bowls anywhere near a full jack. True to the form witnessed throughout the season the team stuck to the task in hand and by fifteen ends we were twenty-four shots in front; as we were at the conclusion of the match. Support, commitment and team spirit couldn't be faulted.

As per the norm, this was a nail biter from start to finish. The green doesn't get any easier and a strong prevailing wind didn't help our cause. The scores across the board were level after ten and fifteen ends - at eighteen ends we were three in front and that difference was maintained. Last year we lost this match by two shots. Whilst John Frew's rink lost - beaten by runs in the rink and a skip who had his shoes inspected after the match - it did nonetheless pick up four shots on the last end which; as it turned out; secured the match. Eight played and eight won - thus far, not a bad record.

Pavilion ‘A’ v Crablands (Away) Pavilion played Crablands (away) on th Wednesday 19 June 2013. Results as follows:Bunce Frew Rebera Wilson

Pavilion 89- 64 Crablands Pavilion 8 pts 2 pts Crablands Great to see the winning momentum being continued; making seven wins from seven thus far this season, which keeps us in the hunt. It is never easy at Crablands on a challenging green. After ten ends we were three down with only one winning rink - again the team stuck to the task in hand and after fifteen ends we were ten shots the better going on to win by twenty-five shots. We continue to be very grateful to a number of players who once again made special arrangements with their places of work so as to ensure that they arrived at the playing venue in good time - one from Reading! Tremendous sense of team spirit and commitment.

Crossed Wires

Day out to Windsor Park On Saturday 22nd June thirty-eight of us set off to the Royal Household Bowling Club at Windsor with some apprehension; after all personal details had been previously been sent and who knew what past nefarious deeds might be uncovered. Thank God for ASH, no not the Islandic kind but our Match Secretary, for without him we could still be circulating Windsor looking for an entrance to the (RHBC). After a tour of the lanes of Sussex, Surrey and Berkshire a very pleasant drive through Windsor Great Park we were still nowhere near our destination some two and a half hours after leaving Pavilion, until Alan came to our rescue with his mobile phone Sat Nav. We duly arrived to a very warm welcome; if not a damp start to the afternoon. John Wright was fully equipped and glad it was raining, as he'd forgotten to bring his white

PAVILION POST trousers, so he didn't look out of place in his wet weather gear. The consensus of opinion was that the green was not up to Pavilion standard by any stretch of the imagination and if we arrange a return match, they will bring their own worm'casts and dandelions to even up the score. The lady visitors managed to do a very good impression of in out in out shake it all about between sun, showers and a very cold wind and we persevered to sit outside to watch the gallant efforts of the team. Jim Harrington stayed in the warm throughout sensible man. The rink skipped by Chris Scott set off at a cracking pace to be 16- 5 up at tea, but as always the opposition laced the tea and chocolate biscuits and they went on to lose by one shot. Captain Paul's team got off to a flying start, one shot, a five then zilch, but they did manage to get to double figures, just (ten). Special thanks must go to Margaret Mackney for stepping in at the last minute from visitor to player, as we were a player short. I'm afraid the Queen didn't have time to pop in, as she was at Ascot for the afternoon (perhaps we would have had more luck there). We were hoping to see her return home but it was not to be. After the match we all enjoyed a nice meal in a very convivial atmosphere, and I believe some of our players managed to imbibe the very smooth scotch whiskey that was on offer in the bar. The return journey was made in very good time after instructing the coach driver the quickest way to the M25!!!!! Oh, I might have just failed to mention we lost the match 134 to 89 but it really didn't seem to matter as a very good day was had by one and all.

Junior Section

th

Saturday 27 July 2013 Sunday 19 May saw all four of our junior girls at Victoria Drive BC in Eastbourne, playing for the County U31 team against the County Executive. There were two rinks of girls playing and four rinks of lads from the U-25 squad. I am delighted to say that the Pavilion girls all featured on the same rink and ended with a comfortable win over their rather more experienced opponents. Lauren Brennan played at three throughout the match; Kate Urben and Rachel Williams played at lead and two respectively for the first eleven ends; while Hannah Samuel played the last ten ends at two. Denise Hodd – manager of the U-31 squad outdoors and U-25 squad indoors, was impressed with the standard of play from our girls and all four have been invited to attend U-31 squad training sessions. These will take place at Newick BC because it is relatively central for girls from across the County. Continuing the theme of County recognition for Pavilion juniors I can report that Tom and Stephen ClarkeLambert have both appeared twice more for the U-25 team in away games to Buckinghamshire. The inaugural Sussex mixed U-18 singles competition will be played at Pavilion on 28 July 2013. Hopefully the selectors will be impressed and more of our junior boys and girls will get a run out at County level.
