under the agreement we receive the electricity generated by the panels for our use. They receive the generating tariff and any monies for any export of electricity to the grid to repay their initial outlay and a return on the funding. The panels’ maximum capacity is 50KWH. The club uses in excess of that amount so it will be rare that any electricity will be exported.

Malcolm Gilbey Flower Borders

Editor Albeit a somewhat late the start to the summer, the recent spell of glorious weather has provided a boost for the bedding plants in the borders separating ‘A’ and ‘B’ greens. The colourful show of flowers along with the established palm trees truly gives a Mediterranean feel to the display.

Solar Panels The Facts and Figures During the club’s last financial year the solar panels on the roof of indoor rinks four to six generated enough electricity to save £6,222.45 off our electricity bills. This allowed the board keep this year’s increase of the membership subscription lower than would normally have been seen; as during the year we had seen substantial increase in our electricity costs. The saving equates to over 16 full members subscriptions. For those members of the club that were not members when the panels were installed and a reminder to all members of the basic terms of agreement with Emotion Energy who

Despite the earlier poor weather over the spring period, Alan and Tony could frequently be seen quietly working on the borders, preparing the ground ready for the planting out the flowers; against all the odds. A vote of thanks must go to Alan and Tony; also to Robin Forrester and Mike Neale who helped with the planting out, as well as Brian Cooper who cares for the beautiful hanging baskets. This is yet another example where if it were not for the generous contribution of time and skills by volunteers, work around the club would either not be done, or alternatively effected at an extra cost to the club!

This colourful exhibition is the result of the hard work of volunteers Alan Hopper and Tony Fuller.

Kiwi’s Record Tally Gold, Silver and Two Bronzes The recent World Blind Bowls Championships saw teams from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, Israel and Canada converging on Beach House Park, Worthing, to compete in the two week World Championship tournament. As you will no doubt recall, Team New Zealand was allowed to use the facilities at Pavilion for practicing; and no doubt could also be seen enjoying a beer or two at the bar. Team Australia also made an approach to use our greens, but upon seeing them decided that they were too good for them to practice on and instead chose to go along to Marine Gardens. Team New Zealand; both players and directors; were only partially funded and contributed a substantial amount towards their own expenses for the trip. I recall reading a plea for donations on their website earlier in the year. Just how many able bodied bowlers would be prepared to do the same?

PAVILION POST Pavilion 10pts 0pts Tarring Priory In short, this was a sterling all round performance by the team giving us back to back victories against our local arch rivals. Traditionally this is invariably a closely contended battle - the win today was convincing. Good to keep the winning run going thus far, nine league games played and nine games won.

Team New Zealand on the closing day of the Tournament

Team New Zealand enjoyed success in the tournament; especially with their captain David Monk winning the totally blind singles championship (see back page); a one up on the silver medal he won in the championships held in Melbourne in 2009. David’s gold medal added to the team’s tally of a silver and two bronze medals was a record haul for the NZ team. The next championship tournament will be hosted by South Africa in 2017.

This is always a challenging fixture when playing away and today was by no means an exception. The weather was ideal but the green was very ‘sporty’. After ten ends we were a mere two shots in front, after fifteen ends we had moved on to twelve shots the better, going on to win by nine shots. The team is to be commended once again for really digging deep, staying focussed and battling for the allimportant eleventh win on the trot! On Thursday next we host Chichester at home in what could prove to be the decider; but sadly without a number of our regulars!!

Thanks also to a goodly number of our club members; including the Hon Sex and his boss; who came to support. Earlier in the week Norfolk played Chichester away and managed to pick up five points. The end result is that our winning streak remains intact for another week - so much for unlucky thirteen!! We are now eleven points ahead of our nearest rivals Chichester and we still have a game in hand.

Chichester turned up with their first team and somewhat surprisingly, after ten ends we were seventeen in front. The opposition then made a spirited come back and after eighteen ends our lead was down to a mere three shots squeaky bum time!! As has been the case on a number occasions this season the ‘team’ remained undaunted, dug deep and went on for an excellent win by six shots. This was the first time for many a year that we have done the double on Chichester. It was good to have Doc Dray back in the team after a period of absence due to an old war wound - he had a superb game! Ron Rebera and his lads were five down after thirteen ends - they then won six of the last eight ends securing a rink win and greatly helping the overall win. Thus far twelve matches played and twelve won - a superb achievement largely off the back of great team spirit. That said, still a long way to go with some potential banana skins en route.

down, after eighteen ends four in front going on to win by ten shots. Well done to Merv's rink that was under the cosh all afternoon, their five on the last end was most welcome. Congratulations to Doc Dray - he and his boyos notched up an eight on the fifth end. I understand that the Doc has never possessed a ‘HOT SHOT’ badge - better watch out for what Santa may bring this year!! Well done to the entire team - our winning streak remains intact – thirteen out of thirteen this season to date. We will need to be on form for our next match at Norfolk which historically which has tended to be a graveyard for us!!

Traditionally Norfolk proves to be our nemesis (when we play them away) the last time our ‘A’ team notched up a win against them, Adam was still a lad!! As ever, this was a closely contested match. After seventeen ends we were ten shots down across the rinks and I was tentatively penning out in my mind a suitable eulogy to mark what appeared at that time to be our first loss in the League this season. Oh ye of little faith!! In the last four ends John Frew's rink didn't drop a shot but rather picked up ten shots which was their winning margin. Peter Bunce and his "cohorts" were under the cosh of wicker Roger Ayling all evening until, that is, the last four ends. They too won four ends on the ‘bunce’ picking up no less than twelve shots; taking them from eleven shots down to win by that all important one shot. Only goes to say that persistence does beat resistance - in the end? An amazing demonstration of resilience and determination was shown across the four rinks, culminating in another superb win. Well done lads.

Coaching Update Our general coaching is going very well at the moment and the coaches are kept busy with coaching Associate Members, they have completed coaching eleven, six are still being coached and due to finish early August, with two to arrange, at their request, in September. We hope that all club members will welcome them and help them on their path to becoming good bowlers. It is very rewarding for the coaches to see some of the bowlers we have coached now playing in county matches and playing for the league teams. They are also making their mark on the competition scene and we wish them well for the future.

PAVILION POST Schools & Bowls A Busy Week for Coaches On the 25th June we had a visit from Durrington High School, they were scheduled to bring twenty-five year ten pupils (they are 14-15 year olds to the uninitiated) for 1.30pm - 3.30pm. Onethirty came and passed; they eventually turned up with twelve boys and one teacher about 2pm; one of the teachers had pranged one of the school minibuses. Not a good start. We started with the initial twelve and got them underway and waited for the remainder, who arrived about 2.20pm. We were then able to start in earnest, the boys proved to be very interested and one or two of them showed real promise. They had to finish at 3.30pm, we therefore, had to cut the programme we had prepared very short. However they all said that they really enjoyed the session. The coaches in attendance were Eric Henshaw, Dennis Allen, Clyde Fordyce, Keith Merritt and myself, ably assisted by Ray Standing, Colin Blackwell and Malcolm Gilbey who had organised the visit. We told them all about the junior section and may be one or two will take up our offer of membership. Malcolm handed out information packs to all who had attended; this tells the history of the club and gives all the details regarding membership. The next day we were due at Angmering Sports College to give the pupils a taster of bowls on their short mat carpets, once again organised by Malcolm Gilbey. Sharon and Geoff Pratt helped the coaches; George Rhodes and myself. We had about fifty or sixty children to cope with, however once again they all seemed to enjoy the introduction to the sport. The age group was quite mixed and there were more girls than boys showing an interest. We had the usual comments, of ‘My granddad plays this game’ and ‘I didn’t know it was so hard’. It is very difficult to gauge how this benefits them, but it does show the many different sports that are available to youngster today, if only they look hard enough. It also promotes the name of Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club to the wider area, also as our contribution to National Schools Sports Week.

Final arrangements are now being made. We only have nineteen bowlers of which four are ladies, so have now written to the respective clubs to see if they wish to play five rinks and we borrow a lady; or if they want to play six triples with two all men rinks. I have one reply saying they wouldn’t mind either way, but I am still waiting on the other three clubs to respond. Please look at the notice board and indicate where you wish to bowl and how many times. Don will let you all know the final outcome, as well as the days you are all playing; which will be all of them I would think; with a respective team sheet and time of departure on th Wednesday 11 September.

Pavilion had played thirteen games and secured ten wins; including recent hard fought victories over Bognor and Maltravers; the points split being 10 - 0 and 8 - 2 respectively. We topped the Division 3 table, but Chichester were hard on our heels and defeat would do little for the prospects of silverware at the season's end. It was immediately apparent that the teams were well matched; one would expect nothing less when league leaders play the second placed team; and by 5pm two of the four rinks had finished; with one win to the hosts by ten shots and one to the visitors by the same margin A few minutes later the third rink concluded; posting a six point win for Chichester. But on the final rink Pavilion were nine shots up - the final end began and the mathematics were simple; if Chichester gathered three shots the match was theirs overall by one shot. Pavilion needed third wood at least to be sure of safety and a notable victory. Although not quite in the Cathedral's shadow, both teams sought divine inspiration as the players whose games had ended lined the green and shouted encouragement; or commiseration depending on how a bowl finished. Passing spectators and foreign students; whose knowledge of bowls probably began and ended with Drake and a much earlier game finished before an Armada was confronted, nevertheless caught the mood and stopped to watch. Several nerve shredding minutes later the match ended with a measure and two shots to Chichester, but Pavilion
