Historically this is always a challenging fixture for the ‘A’ team and today was by no means an exception!! All was going reasonably well after fifteen ends, when we were nine shots to the better. After eighteen ends we were three shots down across the rinks, but then the Pavilion resilience kicked in; Peter Bunce and his crew picked up four shots during the last three ends; Richard Dray picked up that all important single shot on the last end to win by that margin; John Frew and his boyos picked up a five and a four on the nineteenth and last ends respectively; and Vids and his lads made a four on the last end. In three ends we went from possibly suffering a whitewash to taking eight of the ten points on offer. This victory was our fifteenth on the trot; we are now thirteen shots ahead of our nearest rivals Chichester and we still have a game in hand.

Another strong performance on all rinks; with Ron Rebera's rink scoring a total of ten shots on two of the last three ends; being the last rink to finish and then only by courtesy of firefly light!! Sixteen wins on the bounce!

This fixture is always an intensely contested Local Derby and this year was by no means an exception! The scoreboards matched that of the grotty weather at half way stage when we were down on three rinks and sixteen shots down on the match. At that juncture the opposition had the opportunity to close us out, but failed to do so due to the now customary resilience of the current squad that comes into play especially during the final crucial six ends of the match. Vids rink was destined to be our banker rink from the outset and so it proved to be. Ron's rink made a strong comeback from ten down to come second by four shots. John Frew's rink having been down score wise until the nineteenth end when they drew level at nineteen-nineteen managed to win the last four ends picking up the allimportant ten shots to claim rink victory and more importantly to secure the vital two points to give us the overall match win. To have notched up seventeen consecutive wins is indeed a splendid achievement. The team was without 25% of our regulars due to holiday commitments, understandably there was a lot of self-imposed pressure to keep the winning run going, all of which made the end result that much more satisfying. We play our eighteenth and final league match of the season against Southbourne at Pavilion next Sunday our aim is to maintain the winning streak!

PAVILION POST In short, Southbourne gave a very spirited performance off the back of taking ten points off East Preston yesterday afternoon, securing their place in division one for next year. As with last weekend, Vids rink was our banker rink - John Frew's rink was two down going in to the last end, we were holding two to tie then John made his last wood count with a perfect draw resulting in a win by one shot. Peter Bunce's rink was one down after eighteen ends, they then picked up a two on both the nineteenth and twentieth ends with a one on the final end (Peter had a number of truly exceptional woods). An excellent end to our campaign EIGHTEEN wins on the bounce. I am waiting for the LGL to let me know whether such a feat has been accomplished before. The squad has been simply terrific in all respects throughout the season - well done.

Sadly Norfolk could only muster fourteen players, which meant they fielded three players on two rinks; with six bowls in total against Pavilion's four players and eight bowls. That should have given the hosts a massive advantage, but after five ends we were down across the piece. Perhaps we were being too kind to Norfolk, many of whom were sharing the news that the team will probably fold at the end of this season. Fortunately, Pavilion ‘C’ team's natural ruthless streak, coupled with home advantage and the extra bowls eventually asserted itself and we ran out winners - but the scores reveal that it was still a good battle right to the wire. We presently sit atop the division three table with twelve wins and just three defeats from fifteen matches; 111 points in the bag from a possible 150.

The win secured the division two title for Pavilion; with a match in hand. This was truly a great achievement and thoroughly deserved. All the players involved played every game with the title in mind. Thanks to them it made the team selection easy. Well done to all the players; you know who you are; and a special thank you to all the club members who came and supported us.

With memories of the ten-nil drubbing at Field Place just four days previously still fresh in the memory, the equation for Pavilion ‘C’ team was simple - six points from their final home match; against Bognor B, would secure the Division Three title for the first time. The game was played under sullen, grey skies throughout with plenty of sharp showers thrown in for good measure - but ultimately it was smiles and sunshine as the home side ran out winners by ninety-two shots to fifty-five, thereby ensuring silverware and promotion for next season. As ever the hallmark of the ‘C’ team great team spirit - was to the fore. This thirteenth win from seventeen starts renders the final game; away to th Middleton on 29 August pressure free, but doubtless the team will be trying as hard as ever to sign off the 2013 league campaign with win number fourteen.

Home Advantage – an expression you hear bandied about frequently in bowls and other sports. But it was taken to the maximum when the ‘C’ team visited Field Place. ‘A’ green streaked with barren, dusty patches and lush green bands throughout proved very difficult to pace consistently. But the home side knew the conditions well and exploited them fully to run out deserved winners. However, with two matches remaining the ‘C’ team needs just six points to be sure of the title and promotion. Fingers crossed!

It is the first time that a club has won every division in the league, so on behalf of the members I would like to thank all of the league teams for their outstanding performance throughout the summer. So once again, thank you for showing what a great club we are.

PAVILION POST Friendly Matches Pavilion v Horsham (Away) ‘Friendship Cup’ On Saturday 3rd August 2013 Horsham entertained Pavilion at their ground for what is probably the last time as they hope to move to a new purpose built facility for next years matches; including the 'Friendship Cup', which is played on a 'Home and Away' basis. WPBC won the first leg at Pavilion by seventy-nine points and on this away game lost the match one hundred and thirty-five points to Horsham and eighty-eight points to Pavilion - a difference of forty-seven points which returned the 'Friendship Cup' into the eagerly awaiting hands of Pavilion with thirty-two points to spare. The only winning Pavilion rink comprised:Peter Tomley Benny Bennett Dennis Jones Robin Forrester as 'Skip'

Pavilion came equal fourth. The day finished with a meal provided by the Insurance Club as a way of thanking us and four other clubs for the hospitality shown when they visit us during the season; in our case indoors and outdoors.

Malcolm Gilbey Insurance Bowls Club Fun Day th

On Sunday 4 August 2013 a Pavilion team comprising: Carol Artley Colin Davey Chris Scott Paul Wilson participated in the fun day, organised by Insurance BC., and hosted at Epsom Bowling Club. It proved to be a great day with some unusual bowling. The day consisted of five sessions each of four ends i.e. i. Nearest four shots counted, 4pts 3pts 2pts 1pt.

There must be a rule somewhere that junior venues all start with a "P"! Pavilion fielded ten of its thirteen juniors, with Popes Mead supplying four; plus two lads from Newhaven as late entrants. There was some good play throughout and eventually four group winners emerged:- Hannah Maslen (Popes Mead), Stephen Clarke-Lambert, Oliver McGregor and Kyle Bunby all from Pavilion. Notwithstanding home advantage, it was great to see three of our youngsters progress to finals day. Thanks must go to the volunteers upon whom such events depend:- Bennie for umpiring, Richard Calvert, Gordon Kibbles, Trevor Parker, Terry Urben, Keith Merritt and Rick Baumann for marking.

Junior Section Sussex U-18 Mixed Singles The inaugural County U-18 mixed singles competition got under way at th Pavilion on the 28 July 2013. At Polegrove a similar day was run for juniors from the east of the County. At Pavilion sixteen youngsters were organised into four groups of four; with each competitor playing three matches of nine ends. The winner of each group would progress to the quarter-finals, semis and final all scheduled for 25th August 2013 at Peacehaven and Telscombe BC.

Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC

The three girls in our junior section Lauren Brennan, Kate Urben and Rachel Williams, have all been involved with the County U-31 squad during the outdoor season; in particular Lauren who competes for Sussex in the Amy Rose double rink event at Leamington Spa in August. But off the back of the singles th competition on 28 July I am delighted to say that three more of our lads will make their County U-25 debuts in a th friendly against Polegrove BC on 11 August. James Brennan, Kyle Bunby and Oliver McGregor are all making a debut, but the U-25 team also includes those ‘old sweats’ Stephen and Tom ClarkeLambert. Pavilion will be supplying five of the twenty-four man team - a great advert for youth bowls at our club and rewarding for the hard work and resulting progress made by the lads themselves. Well done to all!

Terry Urben A Question of Law Player Short I only recently read a discussion on an on-line bowls forum relating to what

PAVILION POST course of action should be taken if a team found themselves short of a player. Under normal circumstances the following laws would apply:Law 54A in the case of a single fours game such as National Fours or County Fours etc., then unless all players are available to play within a maximum waiting time of thirty minutes, then the defaulting team will forfeit the game. Law 54B in the case of a side game; such as a two fours, Middleton cup etc. if after thirty minutes any of the teams have a player missing then the lead and second will play three bowls each and 25% of the score will be deducted. This can apply to more than one rink so for example in the case of Middleton cup you could in theory have six rinks of three against four. It was interesting therefore to read Terry Urben’s resume of the Norfolk ‘B’ match st on 1 August 2013 where the Norfolk side were two players short, resulting with two of the Norfolk rinks playing only six bowls compared with Pavilion’s eight. The Littlehampton Gazette League Controlling Body included the following rules affecting the conditions of play:4.8a) Where there are only three players on a team on a rink, play on the rink shall be as follows:i) Whichever team wins the end the lead (or two if the lead is the player missing), shall place the mat and deliver the jack. ii) The Lead of the team with four players shall then play both of his two woods followed then by the other six players playing in order commencing with whichever team won the previous end. iii) There shall be no deduction of 25% from the score. This just goes to show the importance of familiarising oneself with the rules/ conditions of play associated with any competition before play.

Editor A Hat-trick of Pavilion Hotshots The August newsletter included a report for the ‘A’ team match away to th Worthing on 20 July during which Richard Dray's rink notched up a hotshot ; scoring all eight shots on the fifth end of their game. A terrific

achievement and in fact the third time it has been done this year; numbers one and two in the hat-trick of hotshots are detailed below:rd The first on 3 April 2013 - indoors against the British Wheelchair Bowls Association, going to Keith Bowden, Brian Arlidge, Terry Urben and Paul Wilson. Worth noting the opposition rink included Ian Blackmore who has played County League matches for Pavilion, plus guest skip Jim Davis who is a current player for Sussex in the Liberty Trophy and Home Counties League. th The second hotshot was on 20 June 2013 outdoors against Maltravers in a ‘C’ team league match. The Pavilion rink had dropped a six on the first end; came back with a two on the second and then moved to ten with a hotshot on the third. The Pavilion rink comprised Terry Urben, Colin Johnson, Rick Baumann and Peter Pullan.

coaches having to give instructions on how to hold and deliver the jack and bowl. At the same time you have five boys sitting and just watching and after a while start to get bored, therefore start messing about. Because it was the day before their summer break we felt this was a contributing factor that they were not that interested in the day.

After lunch they had a triples match on each rink RED v GREEN which they seemed to enjoy more than the morning session.
