100 years old Hubert Brall aka Hughie Well Hughie has done it, reaching his th one hundredth birthday on 28 May 2016. I am sure that members would join in congratulating Hughie on this epic occasion. For those members who do not know Hughie, he is a long term member of Pavilion and was a regular spoon-driver well into his nineties, until it all became too much for him. It had been hoped to arrange for Hughie to attend Pavilion for lunch on Friday th 27 May, but unfortunately this was not possible due to his frailty. We all wish you well for the future Hughie.

Conditions of Play The relevant controlling body e.g. Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club applies Conditions of Play (or rules) to both domestic and open competitions organised by the club. 

Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC

These conditions may cover areas such as prohibiting visiting the head, as well as to the format governing how the matches will be played etc., It is advisable therefore that all players entering these domestic/ open competitions, are conversant with the COP beforehand, more so if playing at another club. Failure to comply with the COP may lead to unwanted consequences.

PAVILION POST Club Website Seemingly a small number of members using I Pads to access the members' section of the club website have had issues trying to access the daily rink allocations from the drop down menu. When opening up the icon for the outdoor rink allocation they say that there is no information to be had. I have added yet another instruction to the rink allocation page informing members if they do not have excel or open office they will get nothing! However by pressing the down arrow to navigate to the bottom of the page they will find a 'pdf' file labelled Current Allocation by day page 2 that has been available since August 2015. Follow that link and you should find the rink availability. To recap, opening the drop down menu using excel or open office you will need to open the website home page then click the button at the bottom of the page and accept cookies. Next click 'members' section where you will be directed to the top left hand corner of the page to click the blue < that will open the drop down menu.

8th Worthing Sea Scouts enjoying an evening at Pavilion

As Don highlighted, insurance is not included in the cost of this tour and if required, tourists are advised to make their own arrangements. A meeting will be called sometime towards the end of August just to run through administrative bits and pieces i.e. arrangements for the outward journey and playing schedules etc.

Touring Club I am pleased to say that everything surrounding the Dawlish tour is now confirmed. Don has sent letters to all those joining the tour explaining the breakdown of the costs, along with a request that outstanding balances be settled before the end of June 2016.

Cheques are to be made payable to Worthing Pavilion Bowls Touring Club and left in Don’s pigeon hole. Cash is to be handed to the club secretary.

The coaching team held a particularly th successful evening for the 8 Worthing Sea Scouts with twenty-four scouts and two leaders coming to the club on the th evening of the 9 May. They were taught just the basics of bowls by the coaches, Eric Henshaw, Keith Merrett, Trevor Parker, George Rhodes, Gordon Kibbles and Richard Calvert. The scouts were very responsive joining in very well; in some cases, showing a genuine interest in our sport. After a short break for refreshments we then split the group into two teams and competed in a match using the scoreboards. One pair won the prizes for being top rink. Overall a real success for the coaches and the scout leaders were very impressed, they said the scouts thoroughly enjoyed the evening. They thanked the coaches for their commitment and patience making the evening so much fun. Since January we have been delighted to welcome fifteen new members to the club who have now been through the coaching scheme. They are in alphabetical order:

There is no better reward for the coaches to see the people we have trained enjoying their bowling and entering into Club activities, we hope they will continue to do so for many years to come. We are also holding an event for a local church group and we will report on this event in the next issue of the Post. Gordon has been heavily involved with coaching new coaches from other clubs, for this they pay for the hire of the club’s facilities and this makes a contribution to our Club finances. This is in his role as Zone Coach for this area. We hope by carrying out this work it will promote bowling in the local area. Without coaches, some of these local clubs would not continue, thereby reducing the number of local clubs we would be able to play. These new coaches will be undergoing their examinations over the next few weeks. We would like to bring to the attention of all members that when they wish to play indoors during the summer period, to check the indoor rink booking sheet in the lobby to make sure the rinks are free.

PAVILION POST Press Release

th

On Thursday 12 May 2016 Pavilion Bowling Club held their presentation evening for the Indoor competitions. The clubhouse was packed to overflowing with not an empty chair to be found! A superb buffet was provided to make it a fully social evening. The evening started with a fun drive followed by the buffet and then to the serious part of the evening acknowledging the achievements by the members during the winter season. The presentation covered from Junior Competition to County competitions. The club should acknowledge the generosity of club sponsor Tribes Funeral Directors who also sponsors the Tribe’s Drawn Pairs competition. Photographs of the evening can be viewed on the club website. Elsewhere WPBC ladies travelled to Middleton in the C&M league and went down 23 to 54. WPBC ladies entered two teams in the Gladys Rowland which is a Sussex wide competition. Pat Edmonds, Pat Cripps, Jacky Pearson and June Lewis played at Lindfield winning 25-13. Their next match will be against either East Preston or Southwater. Our other team of Julie Woods, Ann Button, Carol Artley and Marlene Hancock played Hurstpierpoint at home winning 18-17 with the winning shot nd coming with the last wood on the 22 end!!! Their next match will be against either Preston or Uckfield. In the county under 25’s James Brennan of WPBC played Michael Murphy of Popes Mead Bowling Club at Pavilion winning the match 21-5 so James goes forward to the next round. WPBC ladies Julie Woods and Jacky Pearson won their first round of the Trixie Pairs Competition at Wittering by 23-7.

Do You Remember?

Do you remember Sunday 19th June 2011 when Pavilion’s friendly fixture against the South Cambridge Bowling Association tourists came under threat,

The aftermath of the accident

Courtesy of the Argus

after the police impounded most of the party’s bowling equipment the previous day. Shortly after dropping the tourists off at the Chatsworth Hotel the day beforehand their coach was involved in a mega accident in Downview Road, when without any warning a mechanical malfunction caused the rear of the coach to slew across the carriageway, ploughing into eight parked cars, writing off seven of them. The police impounded the coach that still had most of the party’s bowling equipment left on board, pending a full vehicle examination. Pavilion came to the rescue however by lending the affected tourists bowls and shoes from the club coaching store, thereby enabling the match to go ahead.

Good luck to all the other ladies playing in county patrons matches and to our team who are playing in the Sussex top club at Pagham. For those ladies new to the club if you wish to come along to an outdoor rollup session these are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm until 4pm. Where possible please arrive thirty minutes before the session starts for teams to be selected. Hoping that the sun continues to keep shining this summer.

Hopefully they will have many years of enjoyable bowling and make new friends.  Congratulations and thanks to Jackie Pearson who introduced two new members into the club and thereby potentially can claim a reduction of £80 from next year’s subs.

Ladies’ Captain On a cold April afternoon we held our outdoor Opening Drive with a spider to start and then playing sixteen ends before tea.
