Ebola Threat Ayrshire’s only FREE Local Newspaper!
The NHS in Glasgow and the NHS across Scotland are taking the worldwide Ebola outbreak very seriously as the death toll increases and the reach of the fatal disease reaches unprecedented levels. With many countries issuing statements in regards to the precautions taken to ensure the spread of the deadly disease is contained, the organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow released a statement reassuring people of the limited

PICK OF THE WEEK
Butterworth's A Shropshire Lad. For many of us who learned about the dawn of the conflict years ago at school, it’s easy to remember the basics, but for those who aren’t war academics, the rest is a grey area. The seed of the conflict was planted On June 28, 1914, when Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, part of a secret Serbian military society called Black Hand. That led to the July Crisis, a month-long series of heated political manoeuvring
between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France, and Britain. Officials in AustriaHungary correctly believed Black Hand were responsible for the assassination. Wanting to end Serbian interference in Bosnia, they issued Serbia with the July Ultimatum – 10 demands designed to provoke a war with Serbia. They agreed to eight of the 10 demands, so on July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war.As other nations were dragged into the conflict, on August 4, Belgium refused to permit German troops to cross its borders into France, so Germany declared war on them, having already attacked Luxembourg and declared war on France.

Torture and murder duo lose appeals
Two men, jailed for life for the murder of missing woman Lynda Spence, have lost their appeals against their conviction and sentence.
continued from front page The spread of the disease has never been this out of control, as it usually has a disease containment time of four to six weeks, but this outbreak has been increasing and spreading like a spider web since February. Officials are worried that with the ease in which people catch flights in this modern age the disease could spread to an uncontrollable level. With the number of people dead reaching 700 in West Africa and officials admitting they are still trying to search for as many as 30,000 people in regards to their health, Border immigration and customs staff
feel unprepared to deal with people coming to the UK with possible cases of Ebola. Immigration Service Union general secretary Lucy Moreton said that her members need more information on the threat. “There is no health facility at the borders and there is no containment facility and until extremely recently there has been no guidance issued to staff at all as to what to do.” NHS Scotland have issued a statement saying that Scotland would be ready for any outbreak and to this day there has never been any case of EVD imported into the UK.
Colin Coats and Philip Wade were jailed after judges came to the conclusion after evidence pointed to them. Coats, 43, was given a sentence of a minimum of 33 years in April last year. Wade, 43, was sentenced to at least 30 years. They were both charged with the abduction, torture and murder of 27-year-old Lynda Spence. Ms Spence was abducted in Broomhill, Glasgow in April 2011 where she was then taken to a flat in West Kilbride, Ayrshire and assaulted. Her body has never been found. Its said that she was tied to a chair with tape, had the tip of a finger cut off, burnt with an iron, repeatedly hit with a golf club, had her thumb cut off and toes crushed.
Coats and Wade reportedly tried to cover up the crime by washing the Ayrshire flat, lay new flooring and burned evidence. Both men launched appeals claiming they were innocent. Their legal teams said trial judge Lord Pentland wrongly dismissed an objection to a line of evidence during the trial. However, appeal judges Lord Justice General, Lord Gill, sitting with Lord Menzies and Lord Turnbull, agreed that

the objection, was entitled to be refused. The Lord Justice General said: “In my opinion all that the disclosure showed was that people other than the appellants had reason to harm the deceased. “If the defence considered that the deceased’s status as a CHIS was important, they could have asked for a postponement to the trial. They did not.” By

Man fined after kicking police officer on Byres Road
James Thompson, from Kilwinning kicked a police sergeant in the head, appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week. Police were called out to Taylor’s nightclub in Byres Road at around 1am on June 29, to deal with a disturbance involving Thompson. The officers placed Thompson under arrest, at which point he threw himself on the ground. Officers then tried to stand him up, which he refused, it is claimed. Other officers were called to the scene where they bundled him into a car. A police sergeant sat in thr front seat, where Thompson leaned back and kicked him several times in the back of the head. Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane said: “This wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t taken so much to drink, is what you’re going to tell me?” Mr Holliman, his lawyer then replied that Thompsons antics were caused by

that but he has also been drinking on top of medications he was taking for depression, cystic fibrosis and diabetes. It is claimed that he was never told not to drink alcohol, but only to watch how much he consumed and had not been prepared for the toll it took on him. Sheriff McFarlane told Thompson: “I sincerely hope you’ve learned your lesson, and while the medical advice may be to watch what you drink, I hope you’ll take a different view on this following your conviction.” Thompson was fined £600. It is said that Childs, 43, is not known to have any friends or family in Scotland and was previously living in England. Police have revealed they believe he may be sleeping rough and and are worried for his health. He relies on medication and it is understood that he does not have it with him. Mr Childs has been described as 5ft 8in tall and medium build. He has short brown hair and a tanned complexion with stubble. He was last seen wearing a light blue/ green t-shirt, a grey fleece, tracksuit bottoms with a stripe down the side and tan walking boots. Sergeant Joanne Logan, of community policing in Ayr, said:
“As time passes we are becoming
increasingly concerned for Francis’ well being, particularly as he relies on daily medication which he does not have with him.
“It is possible that Francis is sleeping
rough, and I would appeal to anyone who has information to contact us.

Roadworks on the Isle of Cumbrae
A stretch of road between Lion Rock and the marine station is currently undergoing patching maintenance. Another stretch further north was seen to earlier in the summer. A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “Our roads team carried out some minor patching work and surface dressing last week. The road remained open under convoy during this work. “We have invested almost £400,000 in Cumbrae roads and footpaths over the past three years, to improve and maintain the island’s road network, with a further £130,000 to be spent this year. “Investment this year includes surface dressing of a section of the B896 adjacent to Lion Rock plus resurfacing of Bute Terrace and a section of the inner circle road.” By

North Ayrshire communities fail to feel full benefits of wind farms
Born with the rare condition oesophageal atresia, which meant that his oesophagus went into his lung instead of his stomach. Yorkhill doctors gave him a very small chance of surviving the difficult operation to rectify the condition and his parents feared the worst. The condition only occurs in one in every 4000 births. However Chris did survive, thrive and with a drive that only defeating death can bring, has set his sights on completing his toughest challenge yet.
years older than him at 31 years old.
Raising funds for the hospital that saved his life, but what could he do that would be worthy of their heroics that allowed him to live a fulfilling and rich life.
Chris has previously cycled in aid of Yorkhill, as in 2012 he cycled a near 700 miles around France which raises nearly £4000 pounds for the children’s hospital.
The 29 year old graphic designer has decided on an ambitious plan to cycle 750 miles, from Barcelona around the coast of the Mediterranean through France eventually culminating in the small town of Portofino in Italy. Luckily Chris wont be attempting the journey on his own as he will be joined by girlfriend Iwona Sztorc, who is two
The couple have estimated that the trip will take around nine days and they are hoping to raise thousands for Yorkhill.
Averaging 80 miles a day on their cycling adventure Chris and Iwona has not set a target for the amount of money he is trying to raise saying rather nonchalantly when asked “I was asked how much I was hoping to raise and I was like ‘as much as I can’.” Chris has said that along with the feeling of raising money for a good
cause he will also be enjoying the scenery and coastlines of some of Europe’s most beautiful places. He will be cycling around Marseille, St Tropez, the millionaires playground of Monaco and Genoa. Chris also said that he has been aiming to raise Iwona’s fitness levels before they set off he said “After Iwona asked me to cycle again, I took her out (cycling) last weekend doing 90 miles, with some nice steep hills, which she didn’t thank me for! But if we can go through the pain now it will be easier on the actual trip and we can enjoy it more.” For more details about the pairs trip and to make a donation visit cyclecharity.org online.
Loom bracelets raise money Two wishaw youngsters have put their loom band talents to good use by selling them for charity.
Analysis by North Ayrshire council officers has shown that the community is missing out on large sums of money per year from wind farm developers. Companies who install wind farms usually provide some form of payment to local communities, whether by funding local projects or providing cash payments to the local council. It appears that this is not currently being maximised in North Ayrshire. The Scottish Government has published guidelines in ‘Practice Principles for Community Benefit from Onshore Renewable Developments’ which recommended developers supply benefits of at least £5,000 per megawatt. Currently the most North Ayrshire is receiving is around £1,570 per megawatt – far less than it should be. There are already several onshore wind farms in North Ayrshire and more sites have been looked at in the area for future developments.
To improve this situation, the North Ayrshire Council (NAC) will look at developing plans to make the most out of the payments. By following the lead of East Ayrshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council and Dumfries and Galloway Council, they can expect to receive payments of between £2,000 and £5,000 per megawatt, which would be a considerable improvement and bring it closer into line with the expected benefits. Chief executive of the NAC, Elma Murray said: “The relatively low level of community benefit reflects the fact that there is no corporate strategic policy and developers approach local community groups directly.” With companies dealing directly with the local community, it is apparent they will will come out on top after negotiations. It is hoped that a clear policy will help provide more substantial benefits from future developments. By

The ten-year-olds Jamie-Lee Smillie and Robyn Duffy made the bracelets from the rubber bands and sold them to raise money for CLIC Sargent’s Ayrshire headquarters. The girls raised £233.10 by selling the bands for £1.50 to their teachers and £1 to their friends. The charity supported Jamie-Lee’s family after her older sister Melissa passed away six years ago aged 11. The charity have stayed in touch with the Smillie family ever since. “We wanted to do something because sometimes children with cancer don’t get enough attention and the focus is more on adults,” Jamie-Lee said. “They are a great charity and I wanted to give them publicity as well as raising the money.” Mum Sharon Smillie added: “CLIC Sargent were fantastic at the time Melissa was ill. They really helped us - I don’t know how we would have coped without them.

Sparkling Symington couple Robert and Jessie Gibson have recently celebrated sixty years of marriage and South Ayrshire Depute Provost Mary Kilpatrick paid the dazzling duo a special visit to mark the occasion with a basket of flowers and a
commemorative card. As singles, Jessie and Robert met on a bus going to college and love was clearly just the ticket, as they went on to get married at Kilwinning’s Abbey Church. Robert and Jessie have one daughter, Elizabeth.

Cumnock Highland Games name their 10th Chieftain A Kelloholm born minister has been named as the 10th Chieftain of Cumnock Highland Games. This August, Reverend John Paterson will lead the Games’ Parade and officially open the annual event, now established as one of the biggest days out in the East Ayrshire calendar. The honour comes in the Reverend’s 20th year as Minister of Old Cumnock Church, now linked with Lugar, and will see Mr Paterson lead a parade of pipe bands from The Square to Broomfield Park before ceremonially ‘Calling the Clans’ and declaring the Games open. Cumnock’s 9th annual highland games take place on Sunday August 24th, bringing together highland heavies events, pipe bands, highland dancing and entertainment. Each year a new Chieftain is selected by the organising committee, with the honour bestowed on individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the communities of Cumnock and surrounding areas. Last year, in a break with tradition, two Chieftains were selected – local businessman Christopher Ross and Cumnock football legend Billy ‘Bongo’ Smith MBE – thus making Rev Paterson the
Games’ 10th Chieftain.
Games Secretary Jim McMillan explains: “Unlike many other Highland Games who have a hereditary Chieftain, here in Cumnock we award the honour each year to individual who have made an outstanding contribution to our town and community. Reverend Paterson has been an active member of the Cumnock and Lugar communities for twenty years now, not only as parish Minister but also as a volunteer, and we are delighted he has agreed to be our Chieftain for 2014.” Born in Kelloholm were he attended school before Sanquhar and Dumfries Academies, John Paterson studied at Stirling University, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where he was distinguished as Cadet of the Year, and St Mary’s Divinity College at St Andrews University where he was awarded the Samuel Rutherford prize for theology. Through missionary work, military service and educational work, Rev Paterson spent many years working overseas. He is a former Chieftain of the Caledonian Society and has been involved in the international Scout movement and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. He has also served as Hospital Chaplain at Holmhead and
East Ayrshire Community Hospitals, and as Moderator of the Presbytery of Ayr. Cumnock Highland Games takes place on Sunday August 24th, with the parade leaving The Square at 12.30pm. This year also sees the return of Cumnock Highland Tattoo, an evening of music, spectacle and fireworks also at Broomfield Park on the evening of Saturday August 23rd. Entry to each event is £5 per person. For more information go to www.cumnockhighlandgames.org

It really is that simple that anyone can do it, our kites are so easy and reliable.” You can look at more of his work on www.tug.com or pop down to Stair Park any Thursday from now until September to see it up close.

Lawns
Keep lawns mowed on a regular basis, irrigate if required to keep a good colour of green. Do not feed as this will only promote vigorous growth and the need for cutting, better to apply an Autumn feed in September to strengthen the roots for the coming winter.

General Garden Tasks
Dead head flowering shrubs and roses to keep the garden tidy, cut back lavender and rosemary after flowering to prevent them going woody. Keep on watering and feeding your planted containers to keep the plants going into Autumn. Climbers should be cut back and tidied as required to keep straggly growth to a minimum.
Grow Your Own Entry for The Big Tractor and Soft Play is £4 per child (£3.50 for siblings) Open Monday to Saturday 9am – 5pm Sunday 10am – 5pm
Harvest vegetables as they ripen, I always think young veg is far more tasty, remember to harvest everything when it is ready and freeze any surplus. Tomatoes and cucumbers need constant watering in warm weather and can be fed twice a week. All berries can be picked now and freeze as required or make lots of jam! Spring flowering bulbs are now available so get to the garden centre early to get the best choice. Remember to enjoy your garden this month, sit back relax and enjoy the results of your hard labour!

ccording to the 1891 census, 37 million people lived in the United Kingdom. It’s a sobering thought, but by 1918 the same amount of folks had perished in World War One.

Michael Portillo Railways of the Great War with Michael Portillo BBC2, 6pm To most of us, trains are fairly important but often taken for granted. Paul Hollywood The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 8pm After four years of being tucked away on BBC Two, the bakery contest makes the move to the prime channel. Hosted by comedy duo Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, it sees a dozen amateur cooks spend a couple of days hidden away in a tent-cum-kitchen, where they are challenged to come up with a selection of cakes, breads, biscuits and desserts. Sweet and savoury judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood cast a critical eye over their efforts before deciding each week who is the Star Baker – and who will be hanging up their apron.

CONNECTIONS World twin’s day will be held this year on the 1st of August in Twinsburg in Ohio where they have a huge get –together to celebrate - with twins arriving from all over the world. Many have asked the question, is there such a thing as twin telepathy? Well, one man who has done a lot of research into this area is Guy Lyon Playfairs. He has written a book with that very title “Twin Telepathy” I was fascinated to read about the many incredible experiences and connections that twins have in his book through the cases he has research. The start of Guy’s investigation came when he heard of the Death of Ross McWhirter who was known, along with his Brother Norris, for their links with the Guinness book of Records and Record Breakers.
Are you in pain or suffering with a medical problem and cannot get any form of relief? I can offer an alternative form of healing to help with imbalances in mind, body and spirit. Clinics held in various locations, please visit website for further details.

CONNECTIONS
When Ross was tragically killed it made Guy wonder if Norris had reacted in any way or felt anything at the time his brothers death, as they say that under normal circumstances, when twins pick up on things for each other it is at times when there is great emotional pain or trauma.
– this was about twenty two months before the event took place - this is only one of many predictions they have made that have come to pass.
They have been psychic since birth and have developed their gifts over the years and are now sought out by law enforcement, government and celebrities for information and help.
lady in spirit who made herself known to my mum in her bed, that I would always be protected and not to worry over me, as I was special. I found this very strange, as we were both special. I also was born unexpected at 1lb 10 oz now, back in 1968 I wasn’t expected to even make it through the night. Spending my first 6 months in hospital. My twin Ewan was 3lbs and born 5 minutes apart - him being the oldest. I don’t recall him seeing any spirits but I do remember having conversations as little children with our minds” Fiona McFadden, when I asked Fiona if she had any experiences as a twin she said, “ Yes, when my sister was in labour I felt her contractions as she was having them. We have always had a strong bond, when telling someone a story, we both do it in exactly the same way” Personally: When my twins were very young they would both talk about the lady and the man that sat on the edge of their bed reading to them and I would reply, “ They are special angels watching over you when I am busy”.
In his book he also makes reference to the twins in Alexander Dumas’s “ The Corsican Brothers” where they were comparing to a real life set of twins. In the story one twin lived in Paris and the other in Corsica. They had a telepathic connection with each other and when the one in Paris was killed during a duel the other twin in Corsica instantly felt this and makes his way to Paris to kill the duelist. Psychic twins Terry and Linda Jamison have been predicting world events for years. In November of 1999 they used their divination tool – which is automatic writing [free hand writing that psychics use to tune into and bring forward information from spirit] to pin point the disaster at the world trade centre on 9/ 11 where they said 5,000 people would lose their lives
It would seem they were a great threat to the FBI as they began closing down all of their web site’s that had any form of prediction on them. In my opinion there is no denying that there is a special bond that forms between twins and having a set of my own I know only too well just how connected they can be. I asked on a social media site if anyone had any experiences of being a twin and the connection that they have with their sibling- here is what Maxine and Fiona had to say. Maxine Smith told me “ as a child I sensed and saw spirit and as a school age child I could feel when my twin brother was being bullied, I would see this in my minds eye and know exactly where to go to get him and fight the bullies. My mum had been told by a
One day while getting them washed and ready to go out I accidently brushed against one of my daughters eye’s – anyway, when I had finished getting her ready I called on the other one – they passed each other in the hallway with not a word between them but, when she got to me, the first thing she said was – “don’t hurt my eye mummy”. They would have conversations with each other in their sleep and I always knew from an early age that they would be quite tuned in if not very psychic, as it turns out they both have great psychic abilities but in different areas. So, telepathy, psychic ability or just coincidence - you need to make your own mind up but, if you have a story you would like to share we would be delighted to hear about it so drop us a wee email.

Archangel Azrael
The Archangel Azrael’s name means – who god helps.
This divine Archangel is one of my very favourite angels, the colour of his aura is a very pale yellow or vanilla cream, his energy is very loving and compassionate and he is a source of quiet strength and unconditional love. Archangel Azrael’s has a huge purpose as one of his primarily roles is to help our loved ones cross over to heaven at their time of physical death. He will do everything to bring comfort and to make sure there is no suffering as he helps them transition to the next part of their journey. He also works to help everyone who is going through grief; there are many forms of grief: from the loss of a loved one or from the loss of a beloved pet. We can also feel grief with the ending of a relationship or a job. Grief can also be experienced at times in our life where things have not worked out the way we wished they would. Grief not only affects us mentally but can also affect us physically and spiritually. This can be seen in a disturbance to our eating habits and can even have a detrimental effect on our sleeping patterns. This is where Archangel Azrael can really help; all you need to do is ask him to help ease your grief. Because of the laws of free will he is not allowed to affect our lives in a major way unless we give him permission. When you ask for help this very Divine angel will come to your side and surround you in unconditional love and healing light to bring comfort and support and also ease the pain of grief and help you cope, be it mentally, physically or spiritually. Archangel Azrael has great respect for the process of grieving and will always respect your boundaries but know that he will be there to give you strength and love whenever you need it. If you ask him for his help he can bring in other angels alongside you and your loved ones and will do everything within god’s power to support you with dynamic love.
Our loved ones give us many signs that they are still watching over us and that the cord of love that we shared with them is always there, as love never dies. Azrael can also help you connect with your loved one in heaven by bringing them through in a dream, so you can see and feel their love and also know for yourself, that they are all right. As a practising medium I find that most people who come to me want to know that they’re loved ones are all right and maybe even find out that they are no longer suffering. The answer is always the same that they are well and continuing the next part of their journey and that they hear the loving words we say to them. You can also ask Azrael to surround grieving family and friends with healing energy and divine light in order to help them cope and to bring them comfort. He can lend them support in material, spiritual and emotional ways. There are two crystals, which are very helpful at times of grief, one is a creamy Yellow Calcite, this crystal is aligned with Archangel Azrael’s energy so holding or wearing this may lead to additional comfort. The other crystal is Green Tourmaline which is rejuvenating and unblocks the heart chakra so that you can start to feel the joy and vitality for life again. Both Raphael and Azrael’s energies are aligned to this crystal. Personal experience; I was at the transitioning of my stepfather who I love with all my heart. He had a love for classical music and this was his passion and brought him great joy and peace. As my mum and I sat with him during his transition I could see my stepfather’s mother had joined us from heaven and was in the room, she had come to help him cross over. There were also many angels, and of course Archangel Azrael was there. At my stepfather’s time of crossing I could hear the most angelic music and divine angels singing. This music was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard and it touched my heart and soul. As the tears ran down my face I was so uplifted to know that the angels had brought him the music which would help ease and comfort him in his transition. So please know that the angels will also do everything they can to make the transition to heaven for your family and friends with unconditional love and light. Wishing you all millions of angel blessings. For more details contact Diane on: diane4angels@aol.com

Inner Peace
With our busy and hectic lives it’s easy to get caught up in the everyday hamster wheel, which we call life. We end up in the live to work syndrome instead of valuing the things that bring us a sense of inner calm. It’s all too easy to end up like this and for it to become the “Norm” but breaking the chains that restrict and limit is not rocket science in fact, its child’s play but, this is where the problem lies because, if we see it as being too easy we can’t see the value and it gets over looked and we continue on the wheel in our stressful life. Here are 7 steps to help you relax and focus on yourself and your own needs. 1- Meditation, this doesn’t have to mean you sit with crossed legs saying OM for long periods of time - it can mean a walk in nature, sitting by the water and connecting with the energy or even a candle meditation. Simple light a candle with a colour of you’re choosing, sit quietly and watch the flame flickering away. Don’t think about anything in particular just allow your thoughts to float by. Doing this can be so relaxing and helps to clear your mind of unwanted thoughts and issues. 2 – Music, as the saying goes, music tames the savage beast: listening to a piece of music can help to change
and lift your mood. When we listen to music we tune into the vibration of sound, this allows us to fine tune our own energy altering it from on level to another. If you’re feeling low then listen to something that’s up beat, if your energy is in need of grounding then something a more subtle type of music is needed. 3 – Create a vision board, focusing on the things you do want to bring into your life is so much more positive than looking at the things you don’t want. Vision boards serve as a focus for your energy and help to attract and manifest what you want in your life. Find yourself a large piece of paper or board, onto this place images and words relating to your wishes and desires put this in a place where you will see it everyday to help energise it and remind you of your dreams. 4 – Crystals, you can use any crystal that you are drawn to for this but you might want to use a Rose Quartz as it brings love and joy into the heart. Simple sit in a quiet place holding the crystal of your choice and imagine that you are breathing all of your unwanted thoughts, fears and energies into it so that you are cleansed and free of burden. Once you are finished wash the crystal cold fresh running water to cleans it. 5 – Yoga, this is an amazing way to help you calm down, lower your blood pressure and just relax in
Tarot Card of the Week general. There are classes in every area and if you have not been before it is certainly worth a go. 6 – Soul food – when you are stressed and in need of relaxation then pouring junk food into your system will only agitates you and your digestion even more. Look more to the natural foods like, vegetables, salads, and fruit and drink more water to help your system to flush out any unwanted toxins. 7 – Chakra Balancing – there are seven major Chakras in the body and when your body is out of sync so are they. The chakras run from red the root chakra, orange the sacral chakra, green your heart, blue the throat, indigo the third eye and violet the crown chakra at the top of your head. To help you balance them just close your eyes and imagine each of them in turn vibrating at a level you sense to be in tune with your inner needs. Do one at a time until you have completed them all them imagining a golden light streaming from the tip of your toes moving up the front of your body and over your head down your back and underneath your feet so it encompasses you in a beautiful golden bubble protecting and grounding you. Then imagine that your feet are growing roots into the ground anchoring you to the earth’s core. When you have finished open your eyes, take a big stretch and drink lots of water.
The tarot is an ancient and powerful divination tool that has been used for centuries, its hard to pin point exactly where it originated but what we do know is that the rich and famous have consulted it to assist them in their life. Using the tarot the reader taps into it’s hidden mysteries and symbolic connections to provide the client with what lie ahead and from there they make their own choices and decisions. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means.
This week I have chosen
The Moon:
The moon is the card of illusion and casts shadows on things in and around our life and so it is important to separate the reality of a situation from the illusion when this card shows up. It is one of the Major arcane and it is linked with the star sign of Pisces, which is a water sign. The moon is also a card that connects with your intuition and if you do so in the right way it will lead you to where you need to be, its all about trust and knowing that you can make the right choices. As the moon links with the ebb and flow of the tides it also connects with hormones and emotions so its little wonder that when the moon come up in a reading it can indicate life’s ups and downs – what you are aiming for though it balance.
Angelic Messages by Jean McCauley Angel Readings are a positive way to
Crystal Power - Obsidian or Apache Tear This stone brings protection to those working at a psychic or spiritual and level and is known to the Shaman as the Apache Tear – legend has it that when the Apache were driven off their land the tears of the women landed on the ground and formed pieces of black stones.
If you are looking at expanding your psychic knowledge this is the stone you could meditate on as it is said to allow you to connect between this world and the spirit world. For me it’s a stone to carry with you if you are in need of help or feel concerned about something – use it like a worry stone and hand over your worries and concerns to it to deal with for you.

Joan Charles
I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries
Some sense of gain will allow you to transform your life making it much more balanced and in tune. This maybe what you have strived for and not that its here you can relax knowing that things are good.
Taurus
It’s as if you are in need of a cause of something to get your teeth into – you have all the knowledge and power to make things happen its just really about pin pointing where to start off from.
Gemini If your feeling like there is an emotional battle going on try and
look at the bigger more long term picture before you dive in and do anything that you may regret. Sometimes you need to come through phases before you see the light.
Cancer
Maybe a woman can assist you where finances are concerned, she has a good head for getting things into balance so swallow your pride and ask for help. In no time you could be seeing results.
Leo
Your spiritual potential maybe showing itself in a few ways and you will perhaps be in the mood to look into this side of life and see what it holds for you. I’m sensing you are in search mode for something deeper than the superficial stuff.
Virgo
You know it’s funny how others see in us what we don’t see in ourselves - this week I feel that someone will make comment on your skills, so much so that you may even look at them yourself.
Libra
Ops, you have that fire passion and sensual thing going on and you could be a magnet for the opposite sex during the week ahead. Remember though not to let it get out of control and ego takes over flattery can be misleading.
Scorpio
Patience is called for this week and you could find yourself challenged and in the midst of a whole load of things that are out with your control. Stay calm and wait for the storm to pass – which, it will.
Sagittarius
How could you make your cash work better for you? This is the thoughts you may be having right now and I feel that you could be looking into and researching ways to make this happen.
Capricorn
A friend will be there to support you in a time of need and you will be delighted that they have stepped up to the mark. You normally keep things close to your chest but a problem shared is one halved.
Aquarius You don’t stand back and wait for things to happen, quite the opposite, you are way ahead and looking at the next thing on your agenda which is a good way to be – ahead of the game.
Pisces Frustrations around personal situations will drive you mad how-
ever, if you can manage to turn those emotions into something more positive then you actually benefit from it – don’t let others steal your energy.

Each week Joan will provide messages from your loved ones in the spirit world with the aim of providing comfort. If you read one of the messages and feel that it connects with you message Joan and let her know. SPIRIT CONNECTIONS
I feel this message is for a lady who has lost her son and who is not settled due to his passing. She feels that things were not done the way they should have been and that there has been a great injustice done. I sense that your son is in the spirit world and that he is at peace on the other side. He tells me that he is worried about you and that he sends you love and to say that he would much rather you looked after yourself than torture yourself with this pain. He is like an old soul who is and was very mature for his age and he has left all of this behind him and wishes that you would too. He loves the roses you lay down for him but he doesn’t need flowers to know that you love him very much. There is something about a blue scarf and he seems to be quite happy that he has this with him. Your dreams have him in them and he is there with you so do not worry that he has left you – he blows you a kiss.
SPIRIT CONNECTIONS
Joan, Frank and the name of Chalmers is coming through from spirit – there is a gentleman who wishes to make himself known and he comes on a brother vibration. I feel this man passed with a cancer condition and that he had a difficult time for over a year before he passed. I sense that he lived alone and was a bit of a loner but his family was important to him. He also shows me an army uniform and I sense there was a connection there in the past with him – funny, he is showing me the old TV program Dad’s Army so that should bring back a memory. He just wants to thank you for being there for him and helping him as he says he would have been lost without you so, a huge thank you is coming your way. There is something about property and I sense that someone is looking for a new home just now and is a bit frustrated with the whole thing but I am being told to tell you that the right one will come along so have patience.
SPIRIT CONNECTIONS I feel the need to link with Govan and this connection is for a man there who lots his Daughter some time ago but she has been in your
thoughts very recently – not that she is not everyday but more so of late and I feel this is because you are worried about someone on the earth plane who has been looked after medically. I sense this young woman in spirit and she is such a beautiful soul, always smiling and a kind word for others and she is sending healing energy to you and for the person you are worried about. She has a great sense of humour and loved a laugh – she was so very special and I feel she is making you aware that she is in and around your energy and you will know this because the clock seems to play up for no apparent reason and then starts again, she just loves a bit of a joke as she watches you pick it up and shake it and then say “ that clock is going, we need a new one” actually you don’t just know she is around you and that she is aware that your focus is on time just now to try and get everything done. Cara for Topshop When we found out in June that Cara Delevingne would be appearing as the new face of Topshop, we were beyond excited. Cara, who has previously modelled for the likes of Chanel, Mulberry and Burberry, will feature as the first ever solo face of the high street store. The campaign was styled by Topshop’s Creative Director Kate Phelan and shot in London. These images were revealed this week, causing Cara fans to shriek with delight. Smart Girls Guide to...Keeping Cool
Unless you have been out of the country, you will have noticed that Scotland has been scorching the past few weeks. The weather has been fantastic, with parts of the country hitting almost 30C. However, us Scots are not used to such high temperatures and keeping cool without our house being kitted out with air conditioning. Don’t get yourself in a sweaty tizzy just yet, read our guide and chill out!
up in B&M’s or Poundstretchers for around £10 depending on the size. Who knows how long we will need them so a cheap one will do! Sit a bowl of ice in front of it and it will blow cold air.
Invest in a fan. Portable fans can be picked
Drink lots of water. Keeping yourself hydrated
Run your wrists under ice cold water. This will cool you down instantly and apparently keep you cool for up to an hour. It is a great trick if you’re working in a bar or restaurant and run off your feet.
is a key way to cool down. Add some diluting juice for some variety. Too hot to sleep? Run a face cloth under cold water and squeeze it out. Fold it over and lie with it on your forehead. Another tip is to fill a hot water bottle with cold water, wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. This will keep the bed cool. Keep lights off, as the bulbs will warm the room. Light candles or just a small lamp if need be.
Have a cool shower. Rather than a freezing cold shower – which will shock your body into heating up – a luke warm shower will cool you down. Keep your blinds or curtains drawn during the day. Ever wondered why houses and apartments abroad have shutters on their windows? They keep them closed throughout the day, opening them slightly to let some light in. By

Go Krazy for The Big Review Kimonos The best bit about my job is discovering beauty brands that I might not have otherwise heard of. When I heard about Shavata and as someone who fills their eyebrows in daily, I couldn’t wait to try their products. Shavata specialise in brows and lashes. I tested out the Lash Fabricator, Double Ended Eyebrow Pencil and the Brow Perfector. Here is what I thought of them...
If there is an item of clothing that should be in everyone’s wardrobes this summer, it’s the kimono. Dressed up or down, it is perfect for any occasion. It is great to take on holiday as it can go from beach to bar. Here are our top picks, dressed up or down... By Kaitlin McManus
Dress it up!
Dress it down!
Shavata Lash Fabricator When I heard about a product that involved putting fibres on your eyelashes, I had to try it! I have tried almost every mascara under the sun on the hunt for a mascara that gives you that false-lash effect – without the need for strip lashes. To be fair, strip lashes are great for nights out but can be a bit much for everyday use.
Black Cat Eye Sunglasses New Look
£7.99
There is no other product that i’ve heard of that does this so I was excited to try it. Basically, it looks like a mascara, apart from the wand is covered in little fibres. What you do is, you apply mascara, then use the Fabricator wand like a mascara to coat the lashes, before applying another layer of mascara to seal it. I really did see a difference using the Fabricator and have been using it ever since. Top tip – some fibres can fall while you apply, so don’t use the fabricator after applying lip gloss to avoid furry lips!
Brow Perfector & Double Ended Eyebrow Pencil I used these two products together to achieve perfect brows. I used the pencil to draw the shape, then filled it in with the Brow Perfector. The pencil comes in two different shades, Dawn for blondes and Dusk, a darker shade for other hair colours. I used Dusk, as I have dark brown hair. I then filled in the shape with the Brow Perfector. The Brow Perfector kit includes three crème shades that go on like powder. They cover the skin and the hairs so it can be used to cover grey hairs. Shavata instructs to go one shade darker with brows than your hair colour. So I used the almost black colour in the middle and blended the brown at the straight edges, for a more natural look. Both products are great and work really well together. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this brand for both brow pro’s and beginners, as Shavata have made having beautiful eyebrows as easy to achieve as putting on your morning lippy! By

National Playday Children and young people are being encouraged to get out and play at a series of events taking place across North Ayrshire. Events are being held across local communities to mark National Playday 2014 on Wednesday 6 August. National Playday is a celebration of children’s right to play and aims to spread the word about why play is crucial for children and young people’s health, wellbeing and happiness. spread the word about why play is crucial for children and young people’s health, wellbeing and happiness. The Playday campaign recognises that; playing supports children’s physical and emotional wellbeing, playing promotes children’s
development, creativity and independence, and playing allows children to find out about themselves and the world around them. This is the 22nd year that North Ayrshire Council has participated in the Playday initiative and this year, it will be celebrated locally within 13 venues. Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, Councillor Alan Hill, said: “Playday in North Ayrshire has always been very well supported by the Council and local families. The idea behind the event is so simple – but so important – and that is to give children the opportunity to play.” “I would encourage parents and carers to take their young ones along to an event and have some fun!” For more information on times and dates of playday events, go to: www.north-ayrshire.gov.uk

Pick a park day cleans up in Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock’s Dean Park and Kay Park are looking much tidier thanks to 15 local people who did their bit for the environment at East Ayrshire Council’s recent “Pick a Park” day. Equipped with safety equipment, black bags and litter pickers the volunteers gathered over 20 bags of litter which included bottles and cans which were separated out and taken away for recycling. Along the way, the group discovered the joys of geocaching, using equipment supplied by the Council to discover some hidden treasure, including wild flower seeds for planting. Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council brought along 4 year old daughter Yvie who joined in with enthusiasm. He said: “Yvie and the other children who came today have really enjoyed picking the litter and geocaching. They can see for themselves how
much better everywhere looks once the rubbish is removed; however there is a serious message behind this event. Litter is not merely unsightly. It marrs our enjoyment of the parks which are there for all to enjoy. It also has a serious effect on the environment, is hazardous to young and old and in particular to wildlife. “As a council we spend thousands every year clearing up the mess made by those who simply can’t be bothered to take their litter home or dispose of it safely. That money could be better spent on providing more facilities and services for everyone to share and enjoy. We all have a responsibility to think carefully about what we do with the rubbish we generate and the example we are setting to our children” For more information on anti litter campaigns and events in East Ayrshire see: http://eac.eu/ cleanupcampaigns

Rising property prices putting people off buying Increasing property prices have crushed confidence in buyers, a new survey has revealed.
According to the latest Halifax Housing Market Confidence tracker, buyers are uncertain to buy, howevers sellers have never been more optimistic. The survey showed that 57% think it is a good time to sell within the next year, while 32% feel it’s a bad time. This is the highest score the survey
has seen since it first started in 2011.
However, in comparison, the percentage of people who believe it is a good time to buy, has fallen to 53%, which is the biggest fall since the trackers inception. Commenting on the results, Craig McKinlay, Mortgages Director at Halifax said: “Over the past two years consumer confidence has continued to grow, however it appears that we’ve reached a tipping point with

the equilibrium between buyers and sellers much more out of sync. “The results highlight the regional variations as now people believe that it’s a good time for to sell but not buy, particularly in London and the South East where house price expectations are generally higher and buyers appear to be less inclined to rush into a buying a property as we have seen over the past 12 months.” By

Households encouraged to think renewable energy
A new online tool to help householders save money on bills by installing a renewable heating system in their home, launched today. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Payment Calculator developed jointly by the Scottish Government and the UK Government, will help householders to make informed decisions by more accurately estimating what payments they could receive if they decide to apply for the RHI. Welcoming the new tool Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “The RHI provides payments to householders who install renewable energy heating
systems in their homes. It was introduced to incentivise the use of heat produced from renewable sources, such as wood fuel or heat pumps. “Renewable heat can not only be used to supply individual homes and businesses, but can be used for district heating to supply large quantities of heat at much cheaper rates. In an era of high energy costs, these are important benefits.” Mike Thornton, Director of Energy Saving Trust Scotland, said: “We welcome the launch... With rising energy bills and worries about energy security, there needs to be a major transformation in the way we heat our homes.”

Warm Home Discount for SSE customers now open Glasgow South West MP, Ian Davidson, is today alerting his Glasgow South West constituents who are SSE customers that the Warm Home Discount scheme for the forthcoming winter has been launched.
The Warm Home Discount is £140 rebate for eligible low income and vulnerable households to help with their electricity bills. Warm Home Discount applies automatically to reduce bills for people that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) considers part of a ‘core group’. The ‘core group’ are those who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit only (not just the State Pension) or the Guarantee Credit element and the Savings Credit element of Pension Credit.
If this is you, then you automatically qualify for the reduction and the DWP will contact you between September 2014 and November 2014 to give you information.
The latest to announce their version of the scheme open for 2014/15 is SSE. Alerting local people to the scheme and the need for vulnerable groups to reapply, Ian Davidson MP said: “Each provider involved runs their own scheme for the broader group, so even if you got it last year it’s important to
Scottish property market shows sustained growth
The Scottish property market has shown sustained growth over the course of the last year according to new figures.

check with your provider. “Energy bills are a big part of the cost-of-living crisis, which is why Labour has pledged to freeze gas and electricity bills for everyone from next year, but for now I’m keen to ensure no vulnerable person entitled misses out on the Warm Homes Discount.
“There may be help available now to reduce the bill for vulnerable people, but you still need to check to see if you can get it under your supplier’s scheme and remember to reapply each year. “If in doubt, please give your supplier a call to find out.”
Statistics released by registers of Scotland have revealed that the number of residential properties sold around Scotland in the first quarter of the year had an increase of 22.4%percent compared to the same period in 2013. Registers of Scotland director of commercial services Kenny Crawford said “This is the fourth consecutive quarter that volumes have increased in excess of 22% percent on the previous year, demonstrating sustained growth in the Scottish property market.”

Silverstone classic race driver suffers tragedy A classic race at the world famous Silverstone Racetrack suffered a tragedy as a driver died after clipping his car against another and rolled over, killing the driver inside. Denis Welch, 69, from Staffordshire, was driving a 1960 Lotus, in a race for pre 1966 Grand Prix cars at the Northhampton circuit on Sunday. Welch was taken to the medical centre at Silverstone following the accident but died from his injuries. The 69 year old was a well known and respected competitor in classic car circles and his Staffordshire based company, Denis Welch Motorsport, supplied parts for classic cars from its base in Yoxall near Lichfield. The Motor Sports Association said it was investigating the accident.
Classic website said: “It is with great regret that the organisers of the Silverstone Classic have to report that, following an accident in a race for HGPCA, pre 66 Grand Prix Cars.” Condolences have been sent to the well liked and well respected man’s family. The MSA added “The relevant authorities have been informed and a full investigation will be carried out into the incident. “As any serious incident in and around UK motor sport the MSA, the organising club and the circuit operators are now working closely with the police and other agencies to establish precisely what happened. The MSA, The Historic Sports Car Club and Silverstone extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Welch.”

Police in the United Kingdom are to begin checking drivers’ mobiles phones after crashes to determine whether their use was a factor. New guidelines issued by the Association of Chief Police officers say that officers should be checking phones for texts and calls at the time of the incident in all car accidents. Previously this was only done where drivers were seriously injured or killed. With the new powers, police would be able to confiscate phone after crashes to be used as evidence in prosecution. Mobile distractions while driving are thought to be the cause of more than five hundred serious injuries – including deaths – each year on UK
roads. With the rise of people posting on social media, there have been calls to clamp down on those using mobile devices behind the wheel. Ed Morrow of road safety charity Brake said: “We are fully supportive of the efforts by the police to clamp down on mobile phone use at the wheel. Offenders need to know they will be caught, they will be prosecuted, and there will be serious consequences.” Further measures may also be implemented to discourage people from using their phone while driving. The penalty may be increased from three points to six on the drivers’ licence, which would result in a ban if caught twice. By

The Ford Fiesta became the UK’s bestselling vehicle nameplate of all time this month when total sales topped 4,115,000.
First launched in 1976, the Fiesta has led the small car segment in the UK for 27 of the 37 years and has been Britain’s best-selling car since 2009 when it overtook the Ford Focus. This month it surpassed the historic record of the Ford Escort which sold 4,105,961 in the 32 years it was on sale in the UK from 1968 through to 2000. Ford has added its cherished “FMC1” registration to a Fiesta destined for Scotland for the Commonwealth Games to mark the UK favourite’s landmark achievement. Netball competitor Sasha Corbin, one of Ford’s athlete ambassadors, chose a Ford Fiesta for the Games – one of the 1,120 Fords supporting the event in Scotland this month. UK-based engineers at Ford’s research and development centre at Dunton, in Essex, and at Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre, in East London, develop all powertrains for the Ford Fiesta. Dunton Technical Centre is home to Ford’s latest technical masterpiece – the EcoBoost range, including the 1.0-litre named International Engine of the Year for an unprecedented third consecutive year. The 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that powers the hot Fiesta ST is manufactured at the Bridgend Engine Plant, South Wales. Dagenham Diesel Centre specialises in the engineering and production of high-tech, low CO2 diesel engines for virtually all of Ford’s line-up of cars and commercial vehicles, across Europe and beyond, including the new 1.5-litre TDCi diesel for Fiesta. Technical progress since the original Fiesta was introduced is a step-change.
For example, it would now take more than 80 modern-day Fiestas to generate the NOx emissions of a single 1976 Mk1 model. This first-generation Fiesta, with the 46PS four-cylinder 950cc petrol engine, weighed around 800kg and achieved 37.7mpg, with CO2 emissions of almost 150g/km. Today’s fully-equipped model, with the 1.0-litre 100PS EcoBoost engine, weighs nearly 1,100kg, yet boasts a combined fuel economy of 65.7mpg and just 99g/km CO2 emissions. More than 40 per cent of Fiesta buyers in the UK today choose the turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, and almost 90 per cent opt for higher level specification – Zetec, Zetec S, Titanium, Titanium X and ST models with the Ford SYNC voice-controlled connectivity system. The most popular Ford Fiesta series in Britain is the Zetec, priced at £12,945, and features MyKey (limiting vehicle speed and audio volume for novice drivers), radio/CD with USB connection, remote central locking, electrically operated front windows, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, air conditioning, Hill Launch Assist, seven airbags, Electronic Stability Programme and headlight courtesy delay. Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain chairman and managing director, said: “The Ford Fiesta has gone from strength to strength and today’s car combines style, value, driving dynamics and remarkable technologies such as the multi-awardwinning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. It continues to outsell its nearest retail competitor by more than two to one – and that really tells the story of this extraordinary car.”
Key Dates in the Life of the Ford Fiesta...
The design of the Ford Fiesta has been evolving ever since it was launched in 1976. Here are a few highlights during this time... 1975: Fiesta name chosen by Henry Ford II 1978: Fiesta wins British Design Council Award. 1979: Millionth Fiesta built for worldwide sales. 1984: First Fiesta runs on leadfree petrol. 1993: Driver airbags standard. 2003: Three-door version 2005: 150PS Fiesta ST launched – most powerful to date 2006: Refreshed Fiesta launched with voice activation and Bluetooth 2009: Fiesta makes north American debut 2011: Fiesta RS world rally car makes its competitive debut 2012: New Fiesta is launched 2014: 1.0-litre EcoBoost, triple time winner of International Engine of the Year.

If you and a friend want to go see the Glasgow Tigers at Ashfield Stadium on August 10th facing off against Newcastle Diamonds answer this simple question:
What nationality is Glasgow Tigers rider Kevin Wolbert?
Send your answer to us on a self addressed postcard marked “Tigers Comp” to:
West of Scotland Media, Suite 2/6 Brook St Studios, 60 Brook St, Glasgow G40 2AB Closing date 8/08/14
“We’re disappointed for Jon that he’s going to miss the first few weeks of the new season. “He played a lot of rugby for us last season and he worked hard to become a consistent performer. “His recent surgery will allow him to train fully on his return and play even better next season. We wish him all the best in his recovery period.”
Irvine Meadow striker gears up for new season
AGAINST ALL ODDS Well it’s that time of the week again; I look out the best value bets that are around for you. Last week, we found you a 14/1 winner amongst others. This week, the odds aren’t as high, but there is still some decent value bets around. Let’s start with the opening week of the English Championship. All the Premier league stature clubs will be out to prove a point from day 1. Opening weekend sees Blackburn take on Cardiff, and Blackburn take on Wolves, I fancy two home wins (Blackburn and Wolves) with btts to score in each game. This is paying a MASSIVE 20/1, odds that are too good to ignore. The 2nd of August we have The Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes. Ed Dunlop’s Amazing Maria is has been in fine fettle recently, apart from a minor blip at the Oaks at Epsom last month, and Goodwood has always been the aim of Ed Dunlop for Amazing Maria, so 10/1 (each way) is tremendous value. Ante post prices are available for the Betfred Ebor on the 23rd of August. Peter Niven;s Clever Cookie is my selection for this race. After some decent outings recently, he has only been upped 1lb in the weights, yet is still as long as 10/1, and the step up in trip is bound to suit. Doubles – Blackburn and Wolves to win with BTTS in each match Singles – Amazing Maria 10/1 (each way), Clever Cookie 10/1 (each way)

Only gamble with money you can afford to lose
Ex Ayrshire Juniors McCulloch scores double as Creetown lose Ayrshire Junior team Irvine Meadow are warning their rivals that they aim to improve on their solid standing last season. The impressive club who came inches away from making the final of the Scottish Junior Cup unitl they were beaten by eventual winners Hurlford United and followed that up by being runners up in the Super Premier Division behind Auchinleck Talbot. Striker Paul Maxwell has said that the pain of falling just barely second last
season has gave the team the strength to ensure that won’t happen again this upcoming season. The 30 year old said “We started last season with a strong core of former Ashfield players that the gaffer then supplemented by bringing in a handful of guys who had been round the block.” Stevie Rankin has followed last season’s signings up with several more to help strengthen his team and give the players that push needed to make sure they dont rest on their
laurels after last seasons heroics Maxwell said of the new players “Most of us were of the mind that Stevie would build upon last term’s achievements and go with more or less the same group of players againother than bringing in Jordan Murch and Michael Keenan as replacements, but he has gone on and added quality signings throughout the close season, seven in total are now on board, its easily the strongest playing squad I have known in my 11 years of Junior football.”
Ex Ayrshire Juniors star Derek McCulloch scored a valiant brace as his Creetown team lost 5-2 to Crichton in the South League. McCulloch who appeared for most of the Junior teams in the Ayrshire league would have been devastated at finding his team four goals to one down and playing as if it could have been a lot worse. Creetown even had to savour the embarrassment of watching their own player Bobby Landers
knocking the ball into his own net past his bewildered keeper. McCulloch who tasted success with many of his previous Ayrshire teams will have been somewhat dismayed to watch opposition striker Darren Johnston complete his hat trick and slam the door shut on any chance of a comeback. McCulloch scored a consolation a short time after but at the final whistle Creetown will have been left licking their wounds after being demolished in a clinical fashion.

Scots hit target and aim for more
SPORT GLASGOW Tigers chiefs revealed their deep disappointment after Berwick ran out convincing winners at Ashfield today. The Bandits were anything but robbers as they fully deserved to take home all four Premier League points in the Glasgow rain. But the home side were left reeling after Kevin Wolbert, signed in the winter as their number one rider, scored just two. His afternoon included a defeat by visiting reserve Liam Carr, who Wolbert couldn’t overcome in heat six despite four laps on his tail. Glasgow’s cause was further impaired when Christian Henry withdrew from the meeting with a recurrence of a previous injury, having failed to complete four laps, which left the Tigers a rider short in two races.

By Monday, the gold medal record was broken. By Tuesday the overall record followed in a tremendous start for Team Scotland’s athletes. Not even half way through the events and Scotland was no longer looking back, but forward to Gold Coast in 2018 and how high they can set the bar for the athletes that will travel to Australia in four years time. The Hydro was even turned gold to honour the athletes that have ensured this Games will go down in history as a massive success. The importance of a fast start was stressed in the build-up and Team Scotland delivered with medals being collected thick and fast throughout the opening days. Spectators at Tollcross pool roared with joy as Hannah Miley won gold in the 400 metres individual medley on the opening night. An unexpected second place for Games poster boy Michael Jamieson was disappointing,
but with Ross Murdoch claiming the victory ahead of him in the 200m breaststroke we were given one of the highlights of the Games. The 20 year old clearly could not believe he had taken gold and fought hard to fight back tears on the podium. Medal records weren’t the only ones the 2014 athletes were breaking. Jen McIntosh claimed a silver and bronze in the 50m rifle three positions and 50m rifle prone respectively, making her Scotland’s most successful female athlete in Commonwealth history. Perhaps the only disappointed Scot was McIntosh’s own mother who had held the record previously. Kimberly Renicks won Scotland’s first gold in the 48kg judo and to make sure the family dinner wasn’t too tense, older sister Louise later claimed gold in the 52kg final. Medal number 34, which took Team Scotland past their previous best set at Edinburgh’s 1986 Games, came in the men’s team gymnastics – a first for Scotland in any team gymnastics event.
Hannah Miley
Men’s bowls pair, Alex Marshall and Peter Foster, strolled to victory over Malaysia in their final, securing Scotland record breaking 12th gold in the process. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the games so far came in the para-sport 100 metres breaststroke. 13 year old Erraid Davies provided an incredible effort to win bronze as Scotland’s youngest ever Commonwealth Games athlete. The track and field events weren’t expected to provide much success for Team Scotland, but Libby Clegg ensured the national stadium got to belt out Flower of Scotland as she claimed victory in the women’s 100m T12. Many more Scots have enjoyed success and hopefully there are many more medals set to remain in Scotland also as the team look to build upon this incredible start and giving those who will compete in future Games a tough record to beat. One of the few positives was the return to track of French 18-year-old Dimitri Berge, whose four points was a good return after three months out the sport. There were also strong showings from Anders Thomsen and Theo Pijper who both hit double figures. However, that was no consolation to stand-in team managers Colin Hamilton and Alan Dick who insist they will go back to the drawing board in a bid to salvage the Tigers’ season. Hamilton said: “As far as the result goes, I’m deeply disappointed, to say the least. I know that Alan is as well. “We’re going to have to re-look at the whole situation, because sometimes enough is enough.”
Glasgow’s Rusty Harrison was unlucky to post a score of just four. His total might have been higher had he not succumbed to a terrifying highspeed get-off in heat 13 while chasing visitors Claus Vissing and Kevin Doolan. Having switched places several times with Vissing in the opening exchanges, Harrison appeared to have finally got the better of the Dane, only to pick up some unwanted drive and career into the safety fence on the fourth bend of the third lap. Thankfully, he walked away from the crash. That just about summed up Glasgow’s day, as Berwick won 10 of the 15 heats led by the impressive Steen Jensen, who bagged 12 from number three. Thomsen at least spared the home team further blushes with two wins and a second in his last three heats as he picked up from a slow start. But there looks to be much work ahead if Glasgow want to go to Berwick on Saturday night with hopes for anything better than another defeat. Tigers scorers: Anders Thomsen 11, Theo Pijper 10, Kasper Lykke 6, Rusty Harrison 4, Dimitri Berge 4, Kevin Wolbert 2, Christian Henry 0 (withdrawn).

Ayrshire athlete helps Scotland set record gold medal haul
Paul Foster, of Troon, along with his partner Alex Marshall won the gold in the men’s pairs at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre and in doing so surpassed Scotland’s previous high of eleven gold medals in a single Games.
The pair had previously won gold at the Melbourne Games in 2006, but after leaving Dehli without a medal, the home Games proved ideal for the pair to get back to winning ways. The final ended up a mere formality as the pair ran out easy winners over Malaysia, defeating them with a score of 20-3.
The real drama came in the semifinal against England, where it took in incredible finish for the Scottish pair to reach the gold-medal game. The match having come down to the last bowl, with Marshall conjuring up what he described as two of the best bowls of his life to secure the victory.
The win sparked celebrations and a certain gesture that Marshall has explained as not being directed at the English team or support, who he described as being on very good terms with the Scottish team. Foster had a difficult build up to the Games – with three of his four custom bowls being stolen from his locker at
Troon Portland Club two weeks before the tournament began – but put that behind him to enjoy a thrilling victory. With the record-breaking gold secured and celebrations well under way, Foster said: “This is the highlight of my career. I’ll take it to my grave.” By
