COSLA failing Ayrshire by £2 million By

East Ayrshire Council Leader Councillor Douglas Reid was furious and blasted Labour councillors for supporting a decision that looks likely to cost East Ayrshire £1.89 million pounds from its budget.
Labour Councillors on COSLA (Convention of Scottish Local Authority) have voted through a change to the council budget formula process that will amount to East Ayrshire Council losing nearly £2 million pounds next year off of its present budget.
OSLA Councillor Douglas Reid
G Kelly
He said “The amount of money each council receives is worked out via a long established formula, put in place by Labour in the past and agreed by everyone for over 30 years as being the fairest means of working out the allocations.” COSLA’s purpose is to be the national voice for local government in Scotland
and their high priority work areas are designed to help cement the position of local government as the legitimate tier of governance closest to the people of Scotland. In recent weeks South Lanarkshire Council, Glasgow City Council, Renfrewshire, Aberdeen and a host of other local councils have opted to leave the umbrella organisation. The disagreement and ultimate departure of six major councils in Scotland stems from a row in regards to how government money should be spent amongst Scotland’s 32 councils. Continued on page 2

A recent report released to the public has stated that “a number of councils have recently served notice to quit, citing the long term ineffectiveness of COSLA in advancing the interests of local government in Scotland and the democratic inadequacies of the body.” However COSLA has slowly been becoming less effective and although supposedly updated every couple of years as to remain fair and to reflect changing budgetary concerns hasn’t been fulfilling its mandatory concerns. Douglas Reid said “Labour councillors have voted not to update the formula and the result will mean that East Ayrshire Council will lose nearly £2million next year. Labour proposed and voted for a resolution not to update the formula, so it is now COSLA policy. Kilmarnock & Irvine Valley MSP Willie Coffey also expressed anger at the move. He said, “The formula takes into account population changes and changes in deprivation patterns. So for Labour councillors to vote to cut East Ayrshire’s budget whilst screaming for extra spending is unbelievable. East Ayrshire’s Labour councillors must demand that their colleagues on COSLA reverse this decision or they will be responsible for losing £1.89million.” With a number of local councils opting to leave the governing body and its power to help and change policy in local councils decreasing
COSLA Awards Ceremony
is a need for the ruling body to exist any-more? It takes a year for the council from announcing its intentions to depart to actually depart, giving a year for both to decide on the best way to move forward. However in the past six months, Inverclyde, Aberdeen, Renfrewshire, West Lothian and South Lanarkshire have all stated their intentions to leave. Although Glasgow has yet to make a statement it is widely expected they will announce their intentions to depart COSLA as well. All local councils have had the same basic reason for wanting to leave the organisation, criticism for poor
negotiations with national bodies, and local authorities firmly believing that their best interests are no longer being cared for or met. Gordon Matheson however sees the troubles at COSLA a little differently “COSLA is the 32 councils in Scotland working together at political level. All of us are participants. None has been a spectator. Its primary relationship is with national government and times are challenging. There is a majority government at Holyrood; the biggest public spending squeeze in 50 years; and a centralising agenda in national politics. In addition, national circumstances are not conducive to successful lobbying and no political group in COSLA has the majority.
He continued in regards to the difficulties local governments face with economic uncertainty “COSLA has significant influence on developing national policy. Comparisons with local government across the UK show that a partnership with the Scottish Government is not a weakness but a strategy for success. Since 2010, English councils have endured budget cuts of 14%. Scotland has experienced cuts of 3%.” However with the COSLA local government awards rapidly approaching and the budget for the lavish ceremony set to run into the thousands, it could definitely be seen as one rule for civilians and an other for politicians.

Crisis in Crimea China’s “9-11” In the past week tensions have been at boiling point in the Crimean Peninsula between occupying Russian Forces and besieged Ukrainian units in the region.
PM Vladimir Putin of sending forces into the marginally more pro Russian Eastern Ukraine under the guise of protecting Russian citizens in the country from the apparent threat of ultra nationalist Ukrainian forces. The international community has condemned Russia’s actions, with the US and other NATO nations proposing economic sanctions against the rogue state. In the aftermath of these threats the value of the Rouble, Russian currency has taken a considerable dip in recent days.
On Tuesday of last week the first gunshots of the crisis were fired, fortunately they were warning shots fired by Russian troops over the heads of unarmed Ukrainian soldiers

At least 29 people have been killed and 162 others injured in a barbaric knife attack on commuters at a train station in the Southwestern Chinese city of Kunming, one of the countries busiest stations. The event has been described by Chinese media as “China’s 9-11”. Authorities have described the attack as “an organised, premeditated violent terrorist attack”, the Chinese Government has blamed an Islamic extremist group known as the XinJiang separatists. The Government has said that the group “wished to bring Jihad to China”. The attackers who were allegedly
dressed in black, entered the station with a collection of knives and according to one eyewitness began “running and chopping whoever they could”. Police reportedly shot dead three male and one female attackers at the scene and have captured another female attacker. Chinas President, Xi Jinping, has told security forces in the country to “Severely punish in accordance with the law the violent terrorists and resolutely crack down on those who have been swollen with arrogance”. Over 100 people have died in the region in the past year due to attacks by Xinjiang separatists, the most recent being last month when police shot dead eight members of the group after they attacked patrol cars in the province.

Ayrshire man fifteen years spotless!
An Ayr man celebrates fifteen years as business owner of ServiceMaster Clean Ayr. 46 year old Andrew Telfer from the Coalhall area of Ayr bought the business back in 1995 after working for the previous owner as a cleaning technician. The business which cleans the carpets, curtains, and upholstery of homes and businesses, across Ayrshire stretching right through to Dumfries and Galloway is going strong after fifteen years.
The company which is part of the ServiceMaster Clean franchise, employs 4-5 local people on a part time basis and is also sometimes supported by his 18 year old son, Cameron, during breaks from his Engineering studies at Kilmarnock College. Apart from the day to day regular
carpet cleaning, a substantial part of Andrew’s business comes from “disaster recovery” meaning he is the “go to guy” when disaster strikes and homes or businesses are hit by fire, flood or any other similar disaster causes carnage. Luckily Andrew and his trained team have years of experience in dealing with these situations and he is quick to admit that “there isn’t much he hasn’t seen or dealt with in the business” and if he wasn’t running a cleaning business he would probably become a counsellor. “When someone has suffered a devastating fire or flood they’re naturally at their lowest ebb and they seem to find comfort in talking to me,
which is lovely, but it has led me to think I should be looking at a second career as a counsellor!” Any bout of severe weather usually creates an increased demand for Andrew’s services, ranging from burst pipes during a cold snap to the extreme flooding that has been hitting major parts of Britain throughout the last month. Andrew on what he has learned during his fifteen years as a business owner “A disaster job can take anywhere from seven days to two years to complete, so I get to know my clients pretty well. I’ll work with the builders to strip the building back to the bare floor-boards, or below, and get the dehumidifiers going to dry everything out, room by
room. My job is done when the last carpet is laid and the occupants have moved back in.”
He says the best part of his job is being out and about meeting new people all the time, “It’s been a great 15 years; I’m never in one place very long; always out and about meeting lovely people, some of whom have end up feeding me entire three course meals! I enjoy the feeling of helping put homes and businesses back together. We live in a beautiful part of the country, with some of the friendliest people and I count myself lucky to have a business that allows me to be in and around them both every day.” With extreme weather becoming more and more common and floods
or burst pipes being an unnecessary worry. People can sometimes be afraid to claim on insurance policies because of high premiums and the risk of an increased policy the next time you go to renew. A business like Andrews’ can be the answer, save you unnecessary heartache and with fifteen years’ hands on experience, there will be nothing that Andrew and his team can’t deal with. Some of the onsite offers are upholstery cleaning, curtain, carpet, floor cleaning, and ceramic tile cleaning featuring the excellent diamond polishing service. Stress of expensive rail travel eased by first national railcard in thirty years. By
National Rail helped ease the burden on rail travel by announcing a new incentive to travel by rail, regularly with friends or colleagues.
was to increase by as much as 3.1% percent, thus meaning that a yearly season ticket could push through the £5000 pounds barrier for the first time. The news that Ayrshire rail has announced a welcome relief for hard pressed rail users is a timely boost for all concerned.
The “Two Together” card which can be used to save collective rail users as much as £100 pounds a year, gives friends or relatives a third off rail travel, when travelling together. With ticket usage being unlimited, the discounted tickets are available on both standard and First Class, Anytime, Off Peak and also advance fare travel after 09:30, throughout the week, all day weekends and bank holidays.
With Rail Travel fares rising three times faster than personable incomes, any opportunity for cheaper travel is a welcome relief for hard pressed rail travellers. Those who use the railway everyday due to work commitments find themselves spending a substantial chunk of their yearly income, and rail fares show no sign of levelling off.
With Chancellor George Osborne announcing in January that rail-fare

Over the last three years David Cameron has failed to stand up for working people, allowing train companies to hit passengers with inflation-busting fare rises of up to 9%.” With the Two Together Railcard costing just £30 pounds and with savings of as much as £100 pounds it would be perfect for two frequent train users. any train journey a passenger finds themselves on. With the card being available for purchase at www.twotogetherrailcard.co.uk or at any staffed National Rail station, with Ayr also included, there is plenty of opportunity for rail users to benefit from this fantastic opportunity. New logo for Ayr Town Twinning Association South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie had the pleasure of judging the winning entries for the Ayr Town Twinning Association design a new logo competition.
Open vote on schools’ science competition
Irvine Bay and North Ayrshire Council collaborated on the Discovering and Exploring Science Competition 2014 which is set to show that there are great young scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in North Ayrshire’s schools, who are ready to change the world for the better.
Isabell Rogers, Chair of Ayr Town Twinning Association said: “As it was our 30th anniversary of being twinned with St Germain-en-Laye we decided to introduce a new logo. We approached all the secondary schools in Ayr and invited them to submit designs to us and we were delighted with the entries received. We now have a wonderful new logo.”
Young people were asked the question: Do you have an idea that could change the world? Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay said, “The aim of the competition is to encourage pupils to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We want them to discover how ideas from these disciplines can change everyday life for people around the world. We want them to enjoy exploring and be inspired to take action.
“I am positive that the design Nicholas created will be used by Ayr Town Twinning Association for many years to come.”
(l-r) are Isabell Rogers, Chair of Ayr Town Twinning Association, winner Nicholas Wilson, South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie and runner-up Ayse Cirk.
A local schools competition is attracting attention on the Irvine Bay facebook page, as visitors are able to vote for their favourite project on the page and decide which one will be the winner.
“An increased focus on sciences is right up at the top of the agenda for us here in Irvine Bay as the Enterprise Area seeks to attract new business and growth in the life sciences sector. The area has a long connection with

science based industry and the growth in the life sciences sector is expected to create new jobs. The competition raises the awareness of local young people of science related opportunities which could have an impact of their future employment.” Several category prizes will be awarded in the competition, including the public vote for the Innovative Project Award which is currently being promoted on Facebook. Local residents are asked to take part by visiting the Irvine Bay facebook page, and deciding on their favourite entry and voting for it by clicking the “Like” button. The current science competition is the latest event in Irvine’s award-winning education programme, Regeneration Youth. The programme focuses on Curriculum for Excellence, helping young people to learn from, and contribute to, regeneration by engaging with their local community.

sports charity StreetGames and its Multi-Sport Festivals taking place all over the country this summer. The students will now progress to this year’s national final in London on Tuesday 25th March, where they will compete against ten other regional finalists from across the UK.
An annual initiative, the Real Business Challenge is designed to offer students aged 13 to 15 a valuable taste of the skills needed in a business environment. Students will be competing to win a work experience placement at one of the StreetGames festivals as well as enrolment in an Events Management course to further build on the skills learnt throughout the competition. At the regional final event, students
were mentored by CCE professionals to help develop their business ideas before presenting them back to the Real Business Challenge judging panel led by head judge Sean Collins, Senior Manager, Fields sales at CCE. Teams’ scores were based on their enterprise skills, including team-work, leadership, creativity and presentation abilities. Sean Collins, Senior Manager of Field Sales at Coca-Cola Enterprises GB, and Head Judge of the Scottish regional final said: “I was impressed with the teamwork, creativity, energy and business sense that came through in the students’ presentations, posters and videos. They also displayed a great deal of empathy and understanding of StreetGames.”

Select from the excellent range of seed potato varieties available in the garden centre and set them “eyes uppermost” in trays to chit or sprout for planting in March-April. Keep in a cool (frost free) position in good light to produce sturdy sprouts. Or why not try planting them in a ‘Potato Bag’ - plant it with early potatoes and position in an insulated greenhouse for early harvesting. I’ve produced a helpful sheet you can pick up in the garden centre when you come in to buy your seed potatoes. Vegetable seeds can now be planted and positioned in propagators inside or in a frost free greenhouse. Check out our propagation department for everything you’ll need to bring on a healthy, strong crop. Check for dead wood and crossing branches in fruit trees, prune out as required to prevent disease and chaffing.
Reddit to the rescue for Le Petite Patisserie in Ayr 12 Ayrshire News | 7th March - 21st March 2014
www.ayrshire-news.co.uk
Newly opened dessert and cake specialist Le Petite Patisserie in Ayr has received a helping hand from the popular online forum Reddit.com and has since recieved interest and assistance from all accross the globe. Rebecca, daughter of the business’ owner Joe McGinn who has been a chef for 20 years, originally posted to Reddit asking for advice on how to increase footfall for the business as she “felt bad that the shop was so quiet” even though she considered her father “an artist”. Rebecca was only expecting “around 100 upvotes at most” from the users of Reddit and hopefully a few useful pieces of advice.
However the users of Reddit one of the most visited sites on the internet, took a massive interest in the small Ayr Patisserie, with Rebecca’s post garnering an unbelievable 4,000 upvotes and around half a million views in the first day alone. Rebecca was amazed saying: “When the Reddit post exploded, I was absolutely shocked and overwhelmed with the advice we received!” Rebecca also spoke about how the business initially came telling us how “My dad has been a chef for 20 years, he specialised in pastry. He saw a gap in the market for unique, handmade desserts as all we see in Ayr are mass produced cakes and sweets.” It wasn’t long before offers of help started pouring in from all across the globe, Rebecca told the Ayrshire News saying: “We had offers from people around the world saying they’d do anything from making us a sign to giving us new lighting in the shop, all pro bono!”
Along with the offers of material help, Rebecca and her father Joe also received a host of advice on how to improve the look of the shop and increase awareness of their endeavour in the local area.
on board. The only thing we hadn’t been able to begin changing was the name. We know now it’s meant to be LA petite patisserie but we’re working on changing that.”
Rebecca told us how herself and her father “took all the advice on board and decided to start implementing everything we could as soon as possible. We got a sign up outside, started using the window display to our advantage, took free samples into the streets every Saturday, took boxes of free cakes to the local radio stations” “We got some more amazing advice and offers. A painter from New York has asked permission to paint our desserts, sell her prints on etsy.com and send us the originals for the shop.
The advice has helped the small business grow extremely quickly “already we’ve had more customers and orders. We’ve had a good few redditors in too!”
We were also contacted by a cookery show in New York called The Chew on abc network. They will be talking about our shop on their show and showing photos!”
The story with Reddit doesn’t end here though, Rebecca told us how the follow up post on Reddit resulted in even more publicity for the little Ayr town business. “The next post I made was the update on the shop. I let Reddit know we had fully taken their constructive criticism

Edinburgh bank robbery taxi escape
Ayrshire and Arran voters urged to make their voices heard Voters in Ayrshire and Arran are being urged by the Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael to get informed on the Independence Referendum as the 200 days until the referendum mark is breached.
Last week a bank robbery took place at a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh, where detectives believe the robber made his getaway in a waiting “black hack” taxi.
The robbery which amounted to a four figure sum which has not been disclosed was reported to have occurred at 9:30 am on Monday the 3rd of last week. The man allegedly threatened a member of staff and demanded money, which he then stashed in an orange Tesco carrier bag. It is believed that the suspect got into a waiting black cab and headed west. Police Scotland have issued a statement saying: “At no time was a weapon used or seen by staff or customers,
but the suspect was still able to make off with thousands of pounds.” Police Scotland have also issued a description of the suspect stating: “He was described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s, 6ft 4ins tall and was wearing a black beanie hat, dark-coloured waist-length jacket and brown trousers.” Det Insp Rory Hamilton, of Police Scotland, said: “We believe the male may have arrived and departed from the scene in the same black cab and we are in the process of speaking to the city’s taxi companies as part of our investigation.” “Any drivers who believe they may have taken this man to and from the bank is also asked to get in touch.”
Mr Carmichael said: “That now is the time to get informed and make their voices heard” and warned that nobody could “afford to be complacent” ahead of Septembers crucial independence referendum. Mr Carmichael also posed three questions for voters to consider: What would independence mean for welfare payments, pensions and cold weather payments? What would indepence mean for income tax? and What would a currency change mean for people and business’ in Ayrshire and Arran? My Carmichael, who is a staunch supporter of the UKOK campaign also stressed that this was to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for Scottish voters and said that it was “too important to be left to chance.”. voters how they benefit from being part of the UK locally, including how the roll-out of superfast broadband and the £150m mobile infrastructure project is being funded by the UK government. Mr Carmichael also went on to speak about how: “The referendum is fast approaching and that means it’s time for everyone in Ayrshire and Arran to turn their attention to how they intend to vote.” “And nobody should think that this is not a decision that matters for them. Crucial decisions – like whether you keep the UK pound in your pocket and who will be a British citizen – rest on this vote. There are also a host of great British institutions – from the BBC and the National Lottery to the Met Office and our Olympic teams – who would have to be broken up in the event of independence.” More information on the independence referendum can be found on the Scotland Office website at www.gov.uk/scottishreferendum By

The vulnerable will vote people who are facing crisis and an unknown future. A whole host of charities have combined forces to create awareness and make a difference. Run jointly by Macmillan, Shelter Scotland, Oxfam, Alzheimer Scotland, Children’s Hospice Association Scotland(CHAS), Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), the Poverty Alliance and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations(SCVO).
With the announcement this week that one in five children in Scotland are living in poverty and with a further 65,000 to fall below the breadline before 2020, and with one in seven children unable to wear a winter coat on their shoulders, what condition is the world’s finances in that this can happen in western civilization? Yet in the same week, Forbes Magazine announced that there are now more billionaires in the world than ever before, with 1645 people having £3.82 trillion pounds of the entire world
currency. It truly is as Charles Dickens said in his classic literature; A Tale of Two Cities “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”.
With the Bedroom Tax, and Atos Means Test policies, systematically destroying the hardest hit parts of Scottish society, a campaign has been born, the “Scotland Outlook” campaign which aims to help the hardest hit in society, be it welfare reforms, rising gas and electricity prices, cost of living, job insecurity or even stagnant wages. The campaign has urged people to join the fight against poverty. Created with no political affiliation and born solely to bring need, to the
The aim is to highlight the “Humanitarian Crisis engulfing Scotland, and save future generations from hardship and poverty. In the last six months alone 23,000 people came to food banks looking for help, last week in Glasgow, for the first time in its history Glasgow City Mission had no food to offer those in need, not a scrap of food left on its hallowed shelves. At the present minute, it has been reported that 870,000 people in Scotland are living in poverty, almost a fifth of the entire population. Martin Sime, chief executive of the SCVO, said “With nearly a million people in Scotland living in poverty, we have a humanitarian crisis on our hands and we need everyone’s help to tackle it.
“Thousands of people are turning to
food banks, struggling to heat their homes, and to clothe themselves and their children. It’s not right.”
Politicians in Scotland are too busy squabbling over the independence question and missing out on a more important question, what about the children? What about feeding the constituents that you are squabbling over?
With millions and millions being spent on the campaign to break away from the UK and millions and millions being spent convincing people to stay with the UK, could the money be better spent helping the most vulnerable members of society.
Ewan Gurr, Scotland development officer for the Trussell Trust, said January had been its busiest ever month. It was predicted in December that the trust would have helped 55,000 people by the end of this
financial year. He said that figure had already been exceeded, with 55,232 people using a food bank to date.
There have even been instances of people visiting food banks and asking the volunteers for “kettle boxes” food boxes without rice or pasta, due to an inability to afford heating or gas bills. It has also been reported that people have even had to return food parcels through an inability to afford to cook the dry food in the parcel box. Chris Mould of the Trussell Trust Food bank said about kettle boxes “it is another example of how bad things have got for low-income families. Nutrition was clearly an issue, he accepted, but added: “If you can’t afford to turn the electricity on, then some food is better than no food.”
All this in a week were the richest man, Bill Gates, was announced at the worlds richest man with a fortune of £45.5 billion pounds. It is well known that Bill Gates and his wife are strong believers in philanthropy and making the world a better place, through charitable donations and helping the hardest hit people in society. By

Ayrshire’s faces battle to give up smoking Have you got a light? Apparently 22% percent of people in South Ayrshire will be looking for one. 22% percent of people in South Ayrshire are smokers and with the 12th of March being No Smoking Day, British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland has urged people in South Ayrshire to think about their health and seek help to break the habit of a lifetime. Nearly 25,000 people in the South of Ayrshire are smokers and almost half of all long term smokers die due to their addiction to tobacco. It has also been found that 13 000 people a year die from tobacco related deaths and a further 56,000 people are admitted to
hospital through complications due to smoking. Researchers have found that people are four times as likely to quit smoking forever if they use specialist stop smoking support and treatment. For someone who smokes twenty cigarettes a day to give up would save them around £2548 pounds a year, never mind the health benefits, what about the financial benefits? According to AshScotland the leading statistician on health and smoking in Scotland. As the number of smokers in other parts of the UK has steadily

decreased, the same isnt true of people in Scotland, although not increasing, the decline hasn’t been as progressive. The numbers of young adult smokers and people who begin smoking as a teenager in Scotland, according to Ashscotland, are also worryingly high. Marjory Burns, Director at BHF Scotland, said “Quitting smoking is the single best thing you can do to improve your health. Stubbing the cigarettes out will significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and a variety of cancers and you’ll have more money to spend on things that you enjoy.”
The Scottish Government also confirmed that in 2012-2013, 46% percent of all accidental house fires caused by careless handling of hot substances were linked to smokers paraphernalia, mainly matches. Marjory Burns continued “We know that quitting isn’t easy but last year nearly a million smokers across the UK used No Smoking Day to try and mark the start of their smoke free future. We’re encouraging people to get support from their local stop smoking service now and join forces with other would-be quitters across the country on 12 March, to win the battle
with cigarettes once and for all.” Victoria Taylor, Senior Heart Health Dietitian at the British Heart Foundation said: “Some smokers feel they need to smoke to keep trim but, contrary to the urban myth, you don’t have to consign yourself to an early grave in order to stay in control of your waistline. “We’re encouraging people to start their own battle plan now by following our tips and filling their fridge and handbag with healthy snacks to help them ditch the cigarettes for good on No Smoking Day and come out looking better than ever.”

It has never been more popular to delve into a book, with technology advancing and it now possible to hold hundreds of books in the palm of your hands, thanks to Ereaders or a Kindle or even reading a book on your phone. Its time to celebrate the beauty held in the bind(or screen) of a book and to celebrate World Book Day and the Biggest Book Show On Earth Gregg Kelly speaks to Jill Murphy world famous author of the Worst Witch Series. As well as our very own columnist Joan Charles who successfully released her first book and is busy writing her second. We have also a few examples of the books available on World Book Day for kids. Why do you think the Worlds Biggest Book Show, The Wee Write, World Book Day and Aye Write and the other book shows have became so well received?
I suppose it’s because children are still fascinated by a good story and illustrations. There are so many fantastic illustrators around now, so they have the most wonderful choice. Jill Murphy
Building on the success of last year’s The Biggest Book Show On Earth, World Book Day 2014 sees the launch of an exciting and brand new pre-recorded TV show format. Available online for the whole of March it includes all the wonderful World Book Day authors and illustrators. Find out more by registering to watch on www.worldbookday. com/biggest-book-show. One of the celebrated Authors appearing at the Biggest Book Show On Earth is Jill Murphy famed author of the Worst Witch Series’. Gregg Kelly of Ayrshire News caught up with her to discuss amongst other things the importance of knowledge, books and illustrations.
Do you think that it has became ‘cool’ to read and write again? I think it’s always been ‘cool’ to invent characters of your own and to read exciting stories that other people have written. When I was little, there was a series of books about twins in different countries, for example ‘The French Twins’ and ‘The Dutch Twins’ etc. My best friend and I spent hours reading these stories and were always delighted when we found another one in the library. I still remember her rushing round to my house waving a copy of ‘The Cave Twins’ when we thought we’d read every single one. What have you been working on lately? I’m just starting the illustrations for a gift edition of “The Worst Witch”. Do you have a sense of pride when asked to come speak to the budding author’s and illustrators of the future?
Of course! I have been visiting schools and receiving wonderful letters from children for the last forty years and I love hearing all about their achievements.
What advice can you give them about pursuing a career in book and illustration industry?
Always write or draw from your heart and your own experiences and observations. Don’t get stuck on other people’s stories, just try and think of your own and try to make it original and unusual. Where do your inspirations come from?
It is difficult to say what inspired my work. I learnt to read very early and I liked to make my own little books from when I was six years old. I just found it very natural and easy to do and I used to imagine one day my own books would be in the library, so I gave that to myself as a goal to head towards. I must admit it is a great delight to me, even after all these years, to see my books in the libraries and bookshops and to receive letters from schoolchildren, just as I imagined when I was very young. Are there parts of your own experiences in your novels? The characters in “The Worst Witch” are all based on my schooldays. Mildred is based on myself when I had plaits so long that I could sit on them! Maud is based on my little best friend, Elizabeth, and all the teachers (both nice and nasty) are based on my schoolteachers. It was a very strict school and I began to think up the story of Mildred when I was still at the school, aged fifteen. I used to draw little pictures of Mildred, with
her pointy witch’s hat, all over my school exercise book. I made them into witches because I thought it would add a touch of magic to the story. Did your outlook and the way you created novels and illustrations change after you had children?
Amazingly, I wrote most of the Large Family stories before I had any children at all! I just used to watch my exhausted friends trying to get through the day with their adorable, but demanding, children. Later on, when I had my own son, I often found myself in the plot of one of my own stories, such as “All In One Piece” when I was trying to get out of the door without being clutched by little jammy hands! Could you ever have imagined the amount of success you achieved from your novels?
Not really. I wish I had known, when I was having a rather bad time at a highly academic school, that I would be a published author and illustrator with books in the libraries. Who did you enjoy reading when you were a child?
My favourite author of all time is C S Lewis, who wrote the Narnia books, such as “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”. When I read these I thought they had really happened. I used to sit in my parents’ wardrobe and imagine that the back of it would suddenly disappear, just as it did in the books, and I would walk out into the
magical, snow-covered land of Narnia and have all sorts of adventures, like the children in the books. I also loved the books by Enid Blyton. Do you think that novels written by British writers find it easier to connect with British readers or does it really only matter about the prose and storyline? I don’t think nationality makes any difference to a good story. Also, most of my picture books could apply to any country in the world. If you could go back in time and speak to fifteen year old you, what words wisdom would you have for her?
Just keep being yourself and practicing writing and drawing until somebody notices you, however long it takes until I was twenty-three in my case. How long do you spend on average writing and illustrating your novels?
Each book takes about six months, perhaps a little longer when there are colour illustrations, as they are all hand-done with colour pencils and it takes forever to get the shading right.
Do you think that with the invention of E-readers, books have become more accessible to the younger generation?
I’m not crazy about e-readers, especially iPads, for various reasons. For a start, when I design a book I make sure that the illustrations are part of the writing, like ivy and a wall. For example, pages 142 and 143 in “The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star” have a double-page of silhouettes flying, which is all across the top of both pages to enhance the writing beneath. On an e-reader this is not possible to achieve so the whole process of looking at the pictures and reading is altered. Also, a book is an entity in its own right, a calm and peaceful object which helps children to concentrate. If the book is on a screen, especially an iPad, there is the huge disadvantage of knowing that the device is full of games and time-wasting, addictive distractions. Parents often make the mistake of proudly letting very small children play with these devices and then wonder why printed books are not so attractive to them.
BOOK DAY
7th March - 21st March | Ayrshire News 17
www.ayrshire-news.co.uk
What is your opinion on the print industry? Will it survive and will we always have a place in the world for paper books?
I genuinely believe that books have a huge place for children, especially picture books and books where the child is learning how to read a longer story. It’s also very nice to collect editions with bright covers and see them on your shelf, not to mention sharing them with your friends, as I used to when I was a child.
Thanks very much Jill, one last thing, have you any advice you would like to give to your fans out there?
Just keep on keeping on! If you have a good story and an unusual idea, keep playing around with it and altering it until it’s just right. I wrote “The Worst Witch” when I was eighteen and it wasn’t published until I was twentyfour, so I’m very glad I never gave up. It’s also a very good idea to keep a diary, trying to make everyday things interesting, even if they aren’t!
Joan Charles - My Life Is An Open Book Joan Charles is a columnist with the Scottish Sun and author of “An Angel Walked Beside Me” published by Harper Collins in June 2011. We asked Joan about her journey while writing the book and she had this to say; I have always wanted to write a book, when I was younger that book was going to be a cookery book, something up there went wrong with those plans because, years later when I did get the opportunity to write one it was based on my life experience with spirit and the psychic world – a million miles away from cookery I would say. I’ve been psychic from a very young age and brought up in a family where things like this were never discussed so; I had to keep this secret to myself. I was, as my mother called me, a highly-strung child and so you can imagine, for someone like this was a big worry to deal with on my own having no one I could turn to. By age eleven I had to put it to one side as it was so strong, I didn’t have a clue what to do about it or how to mange this thing whatever it was and it took me until I reached the age of about 25 to reconnect to it when at this point my Mum died. It’s often the case that when a loved on passes over people go in search of the spirit world to see if their loved ones are at peace but I was searching for much more than that, I wanted to understand how to use these skills and tap back into what had always been there. On this journey I have worked with and met many parents who also have psychic children and they have been concerned not knowing what was going on with their own child, it is
the lack of education in this area that panics them and this fear can easily be transferred to a child making things even more difficult to manage. As my work on this path grew I collected many stories and when the chance came along to write a book, for me it had to be this one, which contains stories from and about psychic children including my own experiences.
happen so, I have been writing my next book since then and am nearly there. This one will be different as it focuses on the Tarot, which is a great passion of mine, and it will, I hope, help anyone who has an interest in Tarot to take to great depths. It will at the same time be good for students on my Tarot courses.
I have been fortunate in having people from all over the world contact me to say how much it comforted them and made sense of their own experiences as well as, helping them to assist their own children – and further, that this is not anything other than normal. We just put different labels on it making it spooky, weird, and strange and all manner of other things. Writing the book was fairly easy firstly as I had a ghost-writer, which sounds funny given the nature of the book, and I had the information there after that it’s about dedicating my time to it ensuring it was completed on deadline, which, it was. I had no idea though of just how hard it was to keep it in the public eye once the book came out, this is where the hard work really starts and I am lucky that I have many avenues and ways to get it out in the media and other places, which makes a huge difference. Until this year I had not written anything however, when I got into January I knew the next book was to

86th Oscars Run Down Another year and yet another Oscars awards ceremony, this years host, Ellen DeGeneres, courting considerably less controversy compared to last years hosting which made headlines for Seth MacFarlanes rather off kilter songmanship. Instead the most notable aspect of DeGeneres’ hosting duties was, what is now the most retweeted selfie in Twitters history.
Matthew McConaughey won best actor for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club continuing on what has been dubbed the “McConaissance”. In other words McConaughey’s transition from the lead in romantic comedies and other soft roles to legitimately challenging cinema and television pieces. There was a second
award for The Dallas Buyers Club in the form of the best supporting actor award for Jared Leto, for his portrayal of a transgender character. Gravity dominated the technical awards categories, including the awards for best original score for Steven Price, and cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki. 12 Years a Slave after taking home the coveted best picture award, also took home the awards for best supporting actress which was awarded to Lupita Nyong’o and the adapted screenplay award for John Ridley
Axe hangs above BBC3 BBC 3 the “youth channel” that gave birth to shows such as “Being Human” “Gavin and Stacey” and “Little Britain” is facing the axe. As BBC looks to find £100 million pounds worth of savings, as its cost cutting massacre continues. With the eleven-year-old channel dangerously close to being shunted to an online only position, it has emerged that if BBC3 returns to online only, then BBC4 will remain as a fully functional digital television channel. Stars who have appeared on the channel have released statements in regards to the threatened channel’s importance Jack Whitehall who wrote and starred in highly popular BBC3 programme Bad Education he said ““I really hope reports that the BBC may kill BBC3 are just rumours. Their support of new comedy in particular is vital!”
Lord Hall whom when first appointed as BBC Director General promised, ““I wouldn’t consider closing a channel, the public feel very strongly about all the services the BBC runs. We have to find other ways of saving money.” It is thought that with more of the programmes being watched exclusively through BBC IPlayer and the target audience of 16-34 using interactive services and digital devices more than previous years, the audience numbers for shows wouldn’t be as harshly affected. However it seems that at the present minute there is a shining light of hope for BBC3 as any decision taken by Lord Hall has to earn the approval of the BBC Trust, the corporations governing body, which represents the best interests of all license fee payers.

Joseph Garrett of Portsmouth, more commonly known by his gamer handle, Stampylongnose, has recently found his YouTube videos in which he commentates on his playthroughs of the popular virtual world building game Minecraft have surpassed even that of Justin Biebers videos. Surprisingly Garrett’s channel is also being watched by the same demographic one would normally associate with Biebers fanbase. The 23 year old who started producing the videos from his bedroom on a part time basis has now left his job as a bar man and taken up the duties of producing his Minecraft videos full time. His videos are now viewed millions of times a week, somewhere around the 30 million mark, beating out the likes of Justin Bieber and even the flavour of the month One Direction. However, if Joseph was to walk down the street no-one would recognize him. The gamer who makes his revenue on the back of YouTube advertisements, is still unable to take in the fact that he is being paid to do what he loves saying: “I play video games all day, I make videos, which is what I love doing, and I can be creative and I can have fun and the fact that people enjoy watching it makes it that much more nicer, so I’m very happy.”
Garrett also went on to say how he doesn’t think it’s “sunk in yet” and “When you’re in your room all day looking at little numbers tick up. I think it’s hard to gauge it. Social network monitoring sites Socialblade and Tubefilter are putting Garretts channel in the top 10 mostviewed channels list. Although his channel doesn’t have the top level of subscribers the views are more than making up for this shortcoming. Garrett says that his audience demographic is made up of six to fourteen year olds going on to say: “The majority are girls rather than boys, which surprises a lot of people, though it’s only about a 60/40 split”. The radically shifting world of childrens entertainment can be attributed to this massive viewership, with more and more children demanding interactive entertainment where they can directly interact with the entertainer. Garrett attributes this to the change in attitudes regarding media consumption saying: “A lot of people view the television as a very passive thing now. It’s in the corner, it’s always rolling 24/7. I think things on tablets, phones and laptops seems a lot more instant and probably just a bit more exciting.” By

Britain’s Eurovision go for an anthem of an opportunity Little-known singer-songwriter Molly Smitten-Downes is to represent the UK at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
The 26-year-old will carry British hopes in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May with her song Children of the Universe. The pop singer has already had a taste of the limelight after having a UK top 10 hit in 2008 with Sash on the song Raindrops (Encore Une Fois).
Her selection comes after Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck struggled for the UK in the past two contests.
Tyler came 19th out of 26 countries in 2013, while Humperdinck finished 25th the previous year.
Smitten-Downes, who is known simply as Molly on stage, said: “To represent the United Kingdom in such a huge competition, not only as a singer and performer but as a songwriter is an unbelievable honour. I hope I can do us proud.” A BBC statement described Children of the Universe as “an anthemic, uplifting track specifically written with live performance in mind”. Smitten-Downes, from Leicestershire, enjoyed a brief appearance in the charts five-and-a-half years ago when she sang on an updated version of German DJ Sash’s 1997 smash Encore Une Fois. The 2008 version reached number nine in the UK.

Nothing holds more intrigue than waking to a mist filled morning and watching as ever so gently the vapour dissolves while you peer under bushes and trees hoping to catch a glimpse of the Faerie Realm? Interesting times seem to be ahead and I am sensing that you could be about to embark on a journey that will be positive in your life. I also feel that there is talk of a house move too which may be long awaited but worth it when it comes.
What are the spiritual connections to these places? Why did the ancient Celtic saints come here? Why did the pilgrims visit Luss, or Mount Schiehallion? What are the truths behind Rosslyn Chapel? What about the Stone of Destiny…. where did it come from, why is it the centre of such intrigue and where is it now? Who were the Druids and why did they gather in various spots throughout this country? What was Merlin’s connection to the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde? What is the meaning behind the Glasgow Coat of Arms? Why do ancient Stone Circles dot the landscape of Scotland….and what power did they have or do they have now? Did Jesus and Mary Magdalene spend time in this country?

The Power of Colour Have you ever noticed or commented to someone that a particular colour they are wearing really suits them? Most of us have said it or had comment made to us and this is because certain colours in our Aura stand out. The Aura is a magnetic energy that surrounds each of us and acts as a protective energy shield that encapsulates the body. You may even find yourself wearing a bright colour on a day when you feel
down and this helps to change the mood. If you think about things like, power dressing, we wear colours like Red’s and Blue’s for interviews or official events as they make us stand out and reinforce our own energy – that’s why its called POWER dressing. Colours and their energy are powerful things and each colour holds a different meaning so let me show you what I mean. Red – this is the colour of power, drive and determination. People with too much red may be holding deep seated anger issues that hold them
back from enjoying a contented life.
Orange – this is the creative spark colour, the one that’s present when you have an Aha moment. It’s also linked with planning and the sensual elements in your life. It is a highenergy colour that lifts the mood. Yellow – this colour is about your psychic potential and links to the solar plexus and the seat of emotion. Apparently, if you are trying to learn something - they say having a yellow bulb in the room assist the process. Green – this colour links with love
Hypnotherapy for Smoking Cessation Josephine Mackenzie BSC (Hons) Psychology, PG Cert Clinical Hypnosis, Clinical Practitioner. MBPS MBSCH
Hypnosis is a wonderful tool and is often used as an adjunct to other therapies and can be a wonderful aid to anyone with the desire to give up smoking, notice I say ‘with the desire’ to give up smoking because, if someone comes to me asking to help them stop as their husband/wife/partner etc., thinks it’s a good idea, I turn them away. It doesn’t matter that they want to pay me or how much, if someone is there because someone else sent them they will fail, plain and simple, they have to be in that place where it’s time, their time, their decision. They need to be in that place where they are sick of being a slave to a drug, an addict to a cancer stick, no longer want to smell like an ashtray or realise how much it is costing them financially. However, it is rare to meet a smoker who really wants to stop, those who really want to, do just that without any help. There are many products on the market to wean the smoker off the cigarette but they still inject nicotine into the system one way or another and some even maintain the physical ‘habit’ of holding the offending weapon. Clinical hypnosis helps when the patient has failed to make the necessary changes for themselves by acting like a mental amplifier or booster, it can be described as a process that enhances the patient’s will power, uses the patient’s characteristics and puts the information where it needs to be. The process is described as a treatment with two components – stopping smoking and ensuring that the patient does not start smoking again in future. With all this in place, the patient will be able to effectively break their smoking habit and remain a non-smoker. The framework I am discussing here is based on a one-session treatment, which operates on the basis that smoking is primarily a habit to be broken. However, the efficacy of the framework depends on personalising this protocol for the patient, ensuring that the patient not only breaks the habit but also remains a non-smoker. There is nothing to be gained in asking a smoker why they want to stop, as they will have a well thought out logical string of reasons for why now is not a good time to stop.
and kindness and is often seen with nurses and those who are in the care profession. It is also the colour of money, too much green or a murky green shows greed and not healthy. Blue – the art of communication is strong when you see this colour and teachers, lecturers or those who impart knowledge are often see to have this colour in their aura or you may comment that they suit it. Indigo – anyone who is into psychic or spiritual matters may be seen with this colour as it links with the third eye. It is a colour that shows up on

those who are deep thinkers and who work in service to others. Violet – one of the highest spiritual colours you can get and as you would imagine connected with those who work in that area or who have extremely strong beliefs and commitments. So next time you select the clothes your going to wear, think about what you want to put out there as a none verbal message to those around you.
The Power of Reiki By Susan Hamilton
There is also no point is rolling out all the scaremongering points previously described in this piece as they know it all already, but have ignored it. The one-session treatment I am discussing involves Aversion Therapy - Aversive techniques on their own are of little long-term benefit in this situation, as smokers already know that cigarettes taste and smell bad, and they are aware of the long-term health problems associated with being a smoker. They can and will find excuses for continuing their habit. Clinical hypnosis allows the practitioner to explain to the patient that one of the main reasons that they failed so far is because they have tried to use the conscious, logical thought processes to help them stop, but it is not this part of the their mind that controls their habit; it is the unconscious part of their mind, the part of their mind that contains memories of being a smoker, and controls unconscious processes such as breathing, heart rate and more significantly their habits which needs to get the message that they are no longer a smoker. The unconscious part of the mind knows all the triggers for smoking, and it is in this part of their mind that patients’ need to imagine themselves involved in all of those activities, but without a cigarette and being in control. Hypnosis is described as a process that allows the conscious part of the mind to relax while the unconscious part of the mind can take on board the suggestions. Patients will often respond better to the term ‘memory’ than the term ‘unconscious mind’, as the latter’s undertones of analysis can put some people off. All of the foregoing is an overview of the process however; every treatment is tailored to the individual using their own language and perceptions of their habit to focus on being a nonsmoker. Last month I introduced you to Reiki as a healing tool. It can however be used for many other purposes. …read on! Today as everyone strives for health, happiness, time and money, in reality there are more and more stressed people. Many are just not as happy as they would like to be and often feel overwhelmed trying to juggle work, family and all the other obligations of life. How good would it be to have something at your fingertips to make life a little easier and less stressful? It’s no surprise to those of us who use Reiki everyday that such a tool exists. Making sure the little niggles in life don’t grow into great big problems is one of the many benefits of tapping into the flow of Universal energy, which is Reiki. Many are under the illusion that Reiki is a method of natural healing alone are amazed at its versatility and how it can enhance every aspect of our daily lives. Those attuned to Reiki learn to use it as naturally as breathing and will quite candidly say that it has changed their lives for the better. Apart from the wonderful healing tool that it is here are a few other ways Reiki can be used. Around the home use Reiki when cooking or baking as an additional ingredient to any recipe. Reiki flowing into the dish will add extra life energy to the food and make it that little bit more special for those who eat it. The dreaded ironing basket seems to empty a lot quicker and be less of a chore when Reiki is applied to the basket before starting.
Have you ever walked into a house and not liked the atmosphere? Reiki can be used to clear negative energy from houses and to lighten up the atmosphere and general ambiance. Treatment rooms and houses, which receive regular Reiki, are peaceful, restful places. Most people spend a lot of
time in their homes, so it’s important to take good care of your home’s energy.
Outside Reiki can be used in the garden; Reiki your seeds or seedlings before planting them along with the soil to give them a head start. Giving regular Reiki to your plants and the water in the watering can will keep them growing and blossoming beautifully. Inside the house make that bunch of flowers last longer too, by Reiki-ing both the flowers and the water in the vase. How many times have you headed for the shops or that important appointment and ended up totally frustrated by not being able to find a parking space? Sending Reiki ahead to where you need to park and you will be guided to a space, it never fails! For those learning and studying, Reiki is a wonderful asset. It is easy to read the same page several times without anything actually learning anything. A few minutes of Reiki will improve not only your retention but also the understanding of what you are studying. When it comes to exam time, send Reiki ahead to your exam room to ensure stress and tension are replaced with calmness.
In the workplace Reiki can clear any clutter of the mind preventing the flow of creativity. Give Reiki to the project or situation and you’ll find your mind opening up to new levels of awareness that contain better ideas and ways to deal with what you’re working on. Happy and successful people aren’t without difficult situations or problems in life, they are people who have learned how to solve problems in positive and effective ways and Reiki is one way of doing this. Scottish Water - better H20
less C02
Scottish Water unveiled a major environmental initiative this week to combat climate change during climate week. Climate Week, Britain’s biggest climate change campaign is hoping to inspire a new generation of environmentalists who will together help create a more sustainable future, by showcasing practical everyday solutions from across the societal spectrum. With Scottish Water aiming to travel across Scotland and give schools the chance to see the process involved in giving every individual in Scotland spectacularly clean drinking water 24 hours a day. During Climate Week, Scottish Water is aiming to highlight how the company helps to protect and enhance the natural environment of Scotland
as well as helping to deliver low carbon services for its customers. Climate Change is a very real danger facing everybody, with mankind ever dependant on the power of fossil fuels and our economy highly dependant on fossil fuels. It means that there will be no decline in the use of fossil fuels and therefore global temperatures will steadily increase. Leading to more extreme weather, which directly effects the economy, and therefore a vicious circle of destruction is created. Scottish Water in the last seven years has decreased its carbon emissions, through reducing leakage through pipes, increased renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and the ability to now recycle sludge, which is the leftover solid material from waste
John Amabile’s views on My Diet Loss “I had been a yo-you dieter from the age of fourteen and tried every diet out there. I couldn’t find anything that fitted my lifestyle. On My Diet Loss no matter where i was I had something with me that was a good support. The

water treatment. To underline the urgency of becoming a low carbon emitting country in the last century, sea levels have risen nearly seven inches after staying at the same level for 2,000 years, mainly because of the burning fossil fuels and heating up the worlds atmosphere, which leads to a melting of the polar icecaps. With the wild weather set to continue(and get steadily worse) throughout the next few years, Scottish Water is aiming to ensure that all its services are resilient to any potential impact of climate change. Mark Williams, Scottish Water’s Head of Environmental Science and Regulation, said:

New housing development underway in Stewarton Robertland Square in Stewarton is a hive of activity now that building work has started on East Ayrshire Council’s million pound housing development, a key part of the Council’s strategic priority of promoting town centre living.
Built on the site of the former Robertland Hostel, which provided supported accommodation for older people, the new development will include two two-bed homes for wheelchair users, with integral car ports, and six two-bed homes specially designed for older people.
New Year house building figures continue to rise reports NHBC
The number of new homes registered in the UK in January show a 14% increase compared to the same time in 2013, new figures from NHBC reveal. The year’s first statistics continue the upward trend seen throughout 2013, which resulted in the highest number of new home registrations since the economic downturn in 2007. In total 11,489 new homes were registered (8,312 private sector; 3,177 public sector) in January, an increase on the 10,112 last January. The number of new homes registered in Scotland between November 2013 and January 2014 was 2,193 and increase of 405 newly registered homes in the same period the previous year. As the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, NHBC’s registration statistics provide significant insight on the country’s new homes market. Commenting on the latest statistics NHBC’s Commercial Director Richard Tamayo said: “Our figures show that the industry enjoyed a strong start to 2014 by maintaining the momentum from the previous year. Both private and public sectors reported growth on the same month in 2013 and we look forward to hopefully seeing this trend continue throughout the year to help meet the demand for new homes.”
Councillor Douglas Reid and Councillor John McGhee with Morris McTaggart and Alan Thom from McTaggart Construction, Gerry Darroch, Head of Housing and Environment Services and John Thomson from Corporate Infrastructure.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council was joined at the site of the new development by one of the local members for Annick, Councillor John McGhee. He said: “The Council’s Strategic Local Programme will see 200 affordable homes being built in town centres across East Ayrshire, which will promote town centre living and in turn aid town centre regeneration.” “The Robertland Square site has been specially designed for older and ambulant disabled people providing specialist housing for some of our most vulnerable residents. There
have been some very nice touches included in the plans, like covered car ports which will provide easy access to the homes. The area will also be landscaped so the homes won’t be just practical but will be set within a very attractive development.” Built in partnership with McTaggart Construction and supported by funding from the Scottish Government; work commenced on site in January and the homes are due for completion this December. Electrifying performance at Geneva By
This year at Geneva a slew of hybrid and pure electric vehicles have been gracing the stands, and more often than not they’re actual production models rather than tech demos. One of the most notable examples of AC/DC powered cars at the show is to be found in Porsche’s line up of hybrid vehicles, in the form of the new Panamera S. The big German super estate is capable of 167mph, has a 3 litre engine and an electric motor which counter intuitively for such a powerful machine is apparently able to travel 91 miles on a single gallon of petrol. Regarding this change of heart from a manufacturer which usually focuses on nothing but break neck speed and performance, Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche’s research director said:
Michael McDaid
“We know our duty and we have big concerns about the environment, this technology helps us to fulfil our responsibilities, and it will help us to meet future requirements from regulators, for at least the next 10 to 15 years.”. This amazing vehicle compliments other members of the Volkswagen Groups efforts in hybrid technology with the Volkswagen stand at Geneva showcasing the fantastic new Golf GTE. A GTI with electric hybrid underpinnings and can allegedly achieve a staggering 188mpg. These developments are good news for motorheads across the world as the future of performance motoring both on both the luxury and hot hatch ends of the spectrum seem to be in safe hands. The future’s bright, it doesn’t include a Prius.

STAY SAFE

SAVE FUEL
How can motorists make driving safer, more fuel efficient and more enjoyable?
These are exactly the aims of the low-cost driver coaching provided by an Ayrshire based group which is affiliated to ROSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). Ayrshire Advanced Drivers meets weekly at Auchincruive on the outskirts of
Ayr and is a group which has been promoting safer driving since 1972. Meetings are held in the John Niven Building at SAC Auchincruive on Mondays, 7.15 pm. The 2014 season begins with introductory talks on 17 and 24 March. Speakers from East Ayrshire Road Safety Office, Scotland’s Road Policing and Fire & Rescue Service will highlight ways to
increase road safety, how to save on fuel and for more relaxed driving on today’s busy roads. Driving sessions start on 31 March. Entrance is free and young drivers, a group particularly at risk, would be especially welcome. With the support of the local councils, free coaching is offered to drivers under 25.However, all drivers could benefit from periodic updates to their driving. Even those with a competitive streak could pick up a few wrinkles! Coaching is given individually in an informal club atmosphere, with little expense and no pressure. There is also the opportunity to practise manoeuvres such as reversing and parking. Results show that members develop increased safety and confidence with the possibility of reduced insurance premiums. Eagle Eye: The Ryder Cup Review
Welcome to my new column counting down to the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. It may be 7 months away but it is already the talk of clubhouses up and down the country.

Ryder Cup to provide fans with on-demand interactive content while on course On-course Wi-Fi completes provision of online services to fans after rail and bus operators confirm Ryder Cup journeys will also be Wi-Fi enabled. Spectators at The 2014 Ryder Cup will be able to access Wi-Fi throughout the course at Gleneagles thanks to an official network supplier agreement with Xirrus®.
Available throughout the entire Gleneagles site, this will provide fans with access to on-demand video, interactive content, social media apps and location-based services.
Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup Director, said: “Wireless services bring huge advantages to the whole golfing experience, by providing spectators with faster and easier access to digital content. “From a technology perspective, Xirrus was able to meet the very specific requirements of the golf course environment, providing us with complete coverage and the ability to handle huge capacity and bandwidth demands with no dropouts. By partnering with Xirrus for The 2014 Ryder Cup we are going to take this performance to the next level and truly revolutionise the way we deliver digital content and engage with fans at the event.”
The announcement completes the Wi-Fi picture for Ryder Cup Europe, which is now able to offer spectators attending
The Xirrus announcement follows a hugely successful wireless deployment at the BMW PGA Championship at

What an exciting couple of weeks it has been! Captain McGinley will be delighted with the form shown by Victor Dubussion in the World Matchplay final in Arizona last week. The 23 yr old produced two incredible up and downs to extend the final, eventually losing to Jason Day. This grit and determination is sure to please McGinley. The former amateur world number one has a lot of game despite being a relative unknown and has more or less booked his place in the European final 12 in September. I remember watching him in the European Team Championships at Western Gailes in 2007 when he comprehensively hammered a certain R.McIlroy in the Matchplay stages. He will be a brilliant addition to the European team. It was also very good to see Inverness’ Russell Knox playing well in the Honda Classic, having narrowly lost in a four man play off, however like Martin laird, he needs to put in some impressive performances in Europe this season and in the majors to solidify a place in the European team. It’s been a long road to the PGA tour for Knox, having worked his way up from the mini tours and there’s a possibility that talk of Ryder Cup may be too early for him. The traditional season is not far away now. Augusta and the masters isn’t far away now. My money is on Rory McIlroy. It’s set up perfect for his game - and he has a score to settle! Bring it on.
Till next time, this is Eagle Eye signing off.

COOKIE WINS KELSO FEATURE
CLEVER COOKIE continued his upward curve with an impressive display in the £1.25 Million Scoop6 Premier Kelso Hurdle under regular jockey Wilson Renwick. After back-to-back handicap strikes at Musselburgh, he stepped up to Grade 2 company in style when slamming long-time leader Fergall by eight-lengths. Winning trainer Peter Niven said: “He was bred by my mother and this will have been a great tonic as she’s had a little operation recently. He’s not just the best I’ve had, he’s the best I’ve sat on as I ride him out every morning. “He’s got a few gears and, though he was happy to rip from the front over hurdles, we’ve had to do a bit of work with him over fences and he settles really well. He’s a slow learner but he’s getting the hang of it now. “Who knows what he could end up to be but I’d say he’s more likely to go to Aintree than Cheltenham. I’m even tempted to run him on the Flat, that’s how talented I think he is.” Renwick went on to complete a 20-1 double on Rose Dobbin-trained Rocking Blues in the 2m 5f chase. Brian Hughes and Maggio landed the Best Odds Guaranteed At totepool.com Premier Chase by four and a half lengths from Mr Moonshine for Irish trainer Patrick Griffin. Griffin’s son and assistant James said: “This was the plan and this is our Gold Cup. I’d love to win an Irish
Grand National and hopefully he will go close in a race like that. “He loves it at Kelso where he has also won three times over hurdles and I’m delighted to give Brian a winner as I’ve known him since he was a 10lb claimer in Ireland. There are a couple of races at Aintree for him so that’s where he could go next.” Jet Master and Lucy Alexander were appropriate winners the Cyril Alexander Memorial Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase as the combination saw off Smadynium by 11-lengths. Successful trainer Nick Alexander said: “This race is in memory of my late father and I’ve trying to win it for 21 years. He would have been very proud of Lucy today and he loved having winners at Kelso – he was also one of the first commercial sponsors here.” By

Glasgow Rocks Winning Weekend
Rocks closed the gap on 8th place Durham in their push for the play-offs and also advanced to the Semi-finals of the Trophy with a double weekend win over the Manchester Giants. A terrific team performance helped the home side to the 85-80 victory in the first of a weekend double-header with the Giants. By
Kierran Allardice
The result put an end to a run of four straight league defeats for the home team.
Despite a shaky opening couple of minutes for the Rocks they soon asserted themselves and took the lead – a lead which they saw through for the rest of the game, despite a late surge from Manchester. A dominant end to the first quarter meant the Rocks led 28-22 going into the second.
All ten players had time on the court by the early stages of the second quarter, Rocks coach Sterling Davis said: “I was analysing some things and changed things up a little bit more. I just wanted to give some other guys an opportunity to show what they can do on the floor and they did a good job today.”
Manchester got themselves back in the game midway through the quarter as they reduced the deficit to a single point but another strong finish to the quarter gave the Rocks a 49-39 lead at the half. The third quarter was much more even affair with the sides trading baskets before a three from Johnny Bunyan gave the Rocks a 13 point lead the widest margin of the game. It was a nervy final minute for the Rocks but they held on for the 85-80 win.
Speaking after the game Sterling Davis said: “I thought it was a good team effort, everybody did their part and executed the game plan so I was happy about that.” When asked about their play-off chances, he said: “We’ve got to put together a string of wins and do what we can do right now and after that we’ll see what happens. That’s what our plan is.” The Rocks had the unenviable task of having to play the Giants twice in the span of three days but after the heroics of their Championship fixture victory on Friday the team were full of confidence prior to their Trophy Quarter Final fixture.
The Rocks started off slow and found themselves 10pts off the pace in the opening few minutes only to steady the ship and gain the lead by the end of the 1st quarter, 22-19.
The game would then see-saw for the remainder of the evening with the Rocks taking the ascendancy in the final quarter thanks to a strong defensive effort from the team.
With a little over 1 minute remaining in the game the Rocks led 71-66, but a pair of free-throws by the Giants Rob Marsden and a three-pointer by David Watts tied it all up at 71 with 24 seconds remaining.
However, Rocks’ forward Gareth Murray had the last say, scoring the gamewinner with only 4 seconds to spare. Aliu had a chance to win it for Giants, but his three-pointer fell short which meant that the Rocks had qualified for the BBL Trophy Semi-Finals for the first time since 2006.
The Glasgow team will now face Cheshire Phoenix in the next round of the Trophy. The semi-final will be played on a two-legged basis and dates will be confirmed in the near future. The Final will once again take place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, a venue which proved to be a fitting backdrop for last years’ dramatic conclusion to the competition.

Tigers go Dutch! With the new speedway season now just a month away, things are hotting up around Ashfield Stadium as preparations are at full throttle.
With the Glasgow club still sweating on the visa application for Aussie racer Joey Ringwood to return for a second season of British track action, the remainder of the Tigers side are now well into their preparations to travel to the City at the end of March. Latest team news announced at the weekend is that team boss Stewart Dickson has appointed Dutch international, and fans favourite, Theo Pijper to skipper the Tigers team in 2014. Pijper, who has joined Glasgow from parent club Edinburgh, last rode in the West of Scotland in Tigers title winning
2011 season and has remained the most popular visiting rider ever since. Such is the flying Dutchman’s popularity with Glasgow supporters that he has elected to stage his testimonial meeting later in the season at Ashfield Stadium in preference to Edinburgh where he has spent the majority of his British career. One Glasgow rider who is currently preparing, in style, for the season ahead is 19 year old Dane Anders Thomsen who is being put through his paces in the moderate South of France with the Danish national squad.
Thomsen, who linked up with Glasgow midway through the 2013 season, was an instant hit with the supporters given his do or dare racing style which resulted in him being concussed more than once. With that half season British speedway experience under his belt Tigers management team believe that
the club will greatly benefit from a more assured performer in the months ahead, particularly as the youngster will start at reserve berth. Supporters will get their first look at their new improved team when the club stage their pre season Press & Practice session at Ashfield Stadium on Wednesday, 26th March from 2pm.
This same event will also give fans and riders their first chance to see the newly installed air fence which has become mandatory in British speedway in 2014 in an attempt to contribute to rider safety. The club would like to remind business owners, and individuals, that they can showcase their branding, goods and services via advertising on the Tigers new air fence, details can be found on the club website www.glasgowtigers.co
Slump hits the Braehead Clan A disappointing second period saw Braehead Clan turn a slender lead into a defeat as the Sheffield Steelers inflicted the Glasgow’s side fourth loss on the trot.
Braeheads Matt Towe found the net in the opening minute as Braehead made the best possible start to the game, with Ed McGrane adding a second a couple of minutes later. However the Steelers, who are competing with the Clan for second place in the Elite League, hit back with Chris Blight sending the puck past home goalie Mike Will.
Robert Dowd was next on hand to despatch the equaliser for the Yorkshire side as they took advantage of a weak Clan defensive line. The goal of the night came from the Clans own Ed McGrane, who finished a one-timer to restore the lead after great collaboration involving Neil Trimm and Joel Champagne.
Things began to click for the Steelers in the second period when Blight forced home his second of the night from close range, once again bringing the scoreline back to even footing. Sheffields Dowd got the final touch of the period giving the visitors a lead for the first time in the game and dealt a massive blow to Braehead’s hopes of victory.
The Steelers seemed to step things up a gear and when Jeff Legue scored to make it 5-3 late in the second period, the Clans hopes of victory in this match were dashed. Particularly after Gord Baldwin of the Steelers managed to finish his own rebounded effort, compounding what had been a disappointing night for Braehead, as they progress into March without a win in their last four matches. Summing up the last couple of weeks, Clan coach Ryan Finnerty said: “It’s frustrating right now and any time you lose your starting goalie and two defencemen, it’s always tough. Looking ahead, our goalie Kyle Jones will be back soon, as will Chris Frank, who has one game to serve on a suspension. Had we gone in with a full line-up against Sheffield, I’m confident we would have come away with a result. We’ll lick our wounds, correct some errors ahead of the two
games with Edinburgh and you’ll see a different team out there.”
Braehead Clan take on the Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday 1st March (7pm face-off) in ‘Bring a Buddy night’. All supporters are invited to bring a someone new to the game and cheer the Clan on for a win against the Capitals. Tickets are available to purchase from Ticketmaster or by calling 0844 499 1700.
Tickets can also be purchased from the Braehead Arena Box Office or on the night. Also don’t forget following this Saturday’s game it is Skate with the Clan. Join all your favourite Clan players on the ice for only £5.00 per person, with skate hire available for £2.00. By

dog fight
Kimarnock face a tough battle to remain in the Premier League with a run in that includes champions elect Celtic, a Hearts team that are aiming to go out with a flourish and only 1 point separating Ross County, Partick Thistle, St Mirren and themselves, the run in to the finale of the inaugural Scottish By Richard Garland Premiership could not be tighter. Considering Hibs are only five points ahead of Kilmarnock and only six points away from second bottom, a couple of bad results could see Hibs in the relegation dog fight, that the others currently find themselves facing. With bottom placed guaranteed relegation and second bottom facing a
play off against the runners up of the Scottish Championship. Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston will be hoping that lead scorer Kris Boyd keeps up his spectacular scoring record in Scottish football. With Kris Boyd still hopeful to play his way into Scotland boss Gordon Strachan’s thoughts, keeping your
team in the top tier would be a fantastic way to start. The task will not be easy though, with Derek McInnes’ resurgent Aberdeen team welcoming Allan Johnston’s Kilmarnock team on the 22nd of this month. March could go a long way to deciding the fate of Kilmarnock’s position in the Scottish Premiership.
With Ross County still due to face Celtic, Partick Thistle still due to face Hibernian and an Edinburgh Derby still to be duelled, there are still a lot of points to be picked up, and dare you say it spilled along the way. There is the real possibility that play off’s and relegation decisions could go all the way to the final game of the
season and with the ficture card split across three days, It could come down to the Monday night before anyone knows who is set for the chop and who is set for the play-offs. As of the present minute, a whole month before the season finale, Kilmarnock fans at least know their destiny is in their own hands.
