PICK OF THE WEEK
Butterworth's A Shropshire Lad. For many of us who learned about the dawn of the conflict years ago at school, it’s easy to remember the basics, but for those who aren’t war academics, the rest is a grey area. The seed of the conflict was planted On June 28, 1914, when Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, part of a secret Serbian military society called Black Hand. That led to the July Crisis, a month-long series of heated political manoeuvring
between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France, and Britain. Officials in AustriaHungary correctly believed Black Hand were responsible for the assassination. Wanting to end Serbian interference in Bosnia, they issued Serbia with the July Ultimatum – 10 demands designed to provoke a war with Serbia. They agreed to eight of the 10 demands, so on July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war.As other nations were dragged into the conflict, on August 4, Belgium refused to permit German troops to cross its borders into France, so Germany declared war on them, having already attacked Luxembourg and declared war on France.

Melvyn Bragg
Melvyn Bragg’s Radical Lives BBC2, 9pm In the first of a new twoparter, Melvyn Bragg examines the lives, work and legacy of two men whose ideas have had enormous consequences in their own era and through the centuries. The first is John Ball, the great preacher of the 14th century. Ball’s words and beliefs created groundbreaking revolutionary action. For many years he preached his in the south east of England, and was oppressed by the Church authorities he hated. By 1381 he joined forces with Wat Tyler in Kent and led a rebellion.
Many have asked the question, is there such a thing as twin telepathy? Well, one man who has done a lot of research into this area is Guy Lyon Playfairs. He has written a book with that very title “Twin Telepathy” I was fascinated to read about the many incredible experiences and connections that twins have in his book through the cases he has research.

www.glasgow-news.com continued from front page The spread of the disease has never been this out of control, as it usually has a disease containment time of four to six weeks, but this outbreak has been increasing and spreading like a spider web since February. Officials are worried that with the ease in which people catch flights in this modern age the disease could spread to an uncontrollable level. With the number of people dead reaching 700 in West Africa and officials admitting they are still trying to search for as many as 30,000 people in regards to their health, Border immigration and customs staff feel unprepared to deal with people coming to the UK with possible cases of Ebola. Immigration Service Union general secretary Lucy Moreton said that her members need more information on the threat. “There is no health facility at the borders and there is no containment facility and until extremely
recently there has been no guidance issued to staff at all as to what to do.” NHS Scotland have issued a statement saying that Scotland would be ready for any outbreak and to this day there has never been any case of EVD imported into the UK.
People of Glasgow have
‘stolen the show’ says Council Leader Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson has heaped praise on the people of Glasgow for helping to make ‘Super Sunday’ a roaring success.
Speaking on Day 4 of competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Councillor Matheson expressed his delight that an estimated 30,000 people had flooded the city’s streets to cheer on athletes running in the marathon. The busiest day of sporting events on the Glasgow 2014 calendar, ‘Super Sunday’ also saw total attendances at the city’s free ‘live sites’ top the 225,000 mark just four days into the Games. Glasgow Green has been the most popular live site with up to 39,000 people attending over the course of a day. The Merchant City site reached a peak of just under 24,000 on Saturday, July 26 with thousands also enjoying the entertainment on show at the newly refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand. An incredible 75,000 people have joined in the fun at the ‘BBC at the Quay’ site since it opened on July 19, with 15,000 turning up over the course of Saturday alone. With venues across the city packed with spectators, including the revamped Hampden Park on the first day of athletics, Councillor Matheson believes it is people of Glasgow who deserve a gold medal for their stunning contribution to the success of the Games. Councillor Matheson said: “The Games belong to the people of Glasgow, and the pride and warmth of Glaswegians is winning hearts from across the Commonwealth. “Glasgow is a city that knows how to party and it has been fantastic to see so many people having the time of their lives over the past few days. The city centre is jumping as we celebrate
the biggest party Scotland has ever seen. “The atmosphere around the city’s streets and on Glasgow Green for the marathon was electric and again proves that People Make Glasgow.” In total Super Sunday saw competition in athletics, badminton, boxing, track cycling, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby 7s, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis and weightlifting. The marathon was the first free sporting events, and the cycling time trial on Thursday, July 31 and cycling road race on Sunday, August 3 will also allow spectators to enjoy live action without a ticket. There is also free entry to Festival 2014 ‘live sites’ at Glasgow Green, Merchant City and Kelvingrove Bandstand, where a rich and diverse range of cultural performances will take place. Big screens will also be showing the sporting action from around the city. Full details of the sporting schedule for the remainder of the Games can be found at www.glasgow2014.com

NORTH Police appeal for witnesses over Milngavie blaze.
News - Local to you
Former athlete returns to Commonwealth Games as volunteer. Commonwealth Games volunteer Patricia MacKinnon might walk amongst the crowds as a volunteer but 47 years ago she walked amongst them as a record breaker.
Police are investigating after a house went on fire in Milngavie in the early hours of Wednesday morning. It is thought the blaze was started deliberately. A fifty year old man was taken to the western Infirmary and treated for smoke inhalation before later being released. Firefighters were called to the scene on Graham Drive at around 3am and managed to successfully extinguish the fire before too much damage could be caused. Police have appealed for witnesses to
assist with their investigation into the fire, which they believe was malicious. Police Scotland officers from Kirkintilloch force would like to speak to anyone who was in the area that may have seen anything that could help them. If you have any information please contact Detective Sergeant David MacGregor at Kirkintilloch CID by calling 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. By

The Generation Games
The fitness enthusiast broke the Scottish record for the 100 yard dash as an 18 year old in 1967. She also competed three years later on home turf in Edinburgh at the 1970 Games in Edinburgh. Patricia laughed when she saw the controversy surrounding the Commonwealth uniform because she experienced it herself back when she was competing, she said “In 1970 I was selected for the Scottish athletics squad and we were told to wear this tartan uniform. “When the Games came around this time and there was the controversy over this years outfit, I thought I’s dig it out.” Patricia joined Maryhill Ladies Athletics Club and also trained with the British team at the Mexico Olympics in 1968. Due to a change in 100 yard dash (it changed to the 100m) which in turn meant that no one would ever be able to trump her title.
Patricia spoke of her pride at seeing Glasgow host such a magnificent Games, she said “The atmosphere is so good and everyone has been amazing, although I just want to run.” MacKinnon said of her run ins with the other teams “The English officials didn’t think that a wee Scottish girl could beat them, but I did and they were being trained by a gold medal winning Olympic athlete at the time, Dorothy Hymn was her name.” Patricia also raced all across Britain while holding down a job as an embroiderer at Paisley’s J&P Coats, which helped her earn £400 pounds a year-old
She said “It was an incredible achievement(to beat the English runners) but I wasn’t chosen to go to Canada for an international event because the team had already been selected. It was difficult being in Scotland because you didn’t get much help.” After breaking several records (many of whom still stand) Patricia suffered a few injuries which ultimately led to her retiring. With very few track sprinters featuring in the Scotland team at this Commonwealth Games it looks like Patricia’s records will be sure to last for at least another four years.

Businesses in Glasgow are feeling the Commonwealth benefit Glasgow’s businesses are booming, with trade outstripping expectations over the first few days of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Business leaders say a feelgood, carnival atmosphere across Glasgow means trade and revenues are up – with some restaurants even having to replenish stock on Sunday night. stage, I believe we can go on to convert that short-term bounce into a long-term benefit.” Denis MacCann, Co-Chair of the Greater Glasgow Hotels Association (GGHA), said: “Every aspect of the weekend was a huge success. Revenues during July 2014 for the hotel sector are likely to show yearon-year growth of between 200 and 300%.” Anne Mulhern MBE, of The Willow Tearooms and Chair of Glasgow’s Leading Attractions said: “The weekend was superb.

The word on the street is that Glasgow is buzzing; everyone’s smiling and happy – we’re up for it.” Anne Ledgerwood, General Manager
of the St Enoch Centre and Chair of the City Centre Retail Association, said: “Footfall in the St Enoch Centre on Sunday during the marathon was up by 11,000 people which is far better than we were forecasting because our car park was closed. “Overall, our footfall has increased by 6% and we’re delighted that people have not been put off from shopping. “There is no doubt that visitors to the city are buying gifts before they leave and the retailers are loving the Games. A judge told an armed robber he is not a very good thief, it’s been revealed. James Fisher, 46, from Bridgeton, Glasgow, was jailed for eight years, for raiding a One O One off Licence on the Main Street Rutherglen. On January 14, the male entered the shop wearing a black beanie hat and a scarf covering the lower part of his face. Fisher was armed with a knife and demanded money. The shop assistant told him the incident was being filmed on CCTV. The shop worker pushed him away and pulled his hat and scarf to reveal his face.
Fisher managed to open the till and take £360, but in struggle he dropped money totalling to £80 and fled. Fisher has already served sentences in the past of seven years and nine years for armed robbery. Advocate depute Shanti Maguire said: “Later he was positively identified by Ms McCue and his DNA was found inside the hat she took from him.” Jailing Fisher Judge Bill Dunlop QC said: “This was some feisty lady you came across that day. “It’s time you realised you are not very good at this sort of thing. This was a heartless, inept drunken escapade.”
the remaining firefighters assisted with the evacuation of the residents and it was quickly established that everyone in the building had been accounted for. Twenty firefighters attended the scene. A total of 22 residents and three staff members were in the building at the start of the fire, with only one resident being taken to hospital with minor injuries sustained due to a fall whilst being helped from the building by staff. Due to the damage sustained to the building, residents have been found alternative accommodation within two nearby care homes. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. No further information is available at this time

40,000 people singing Loch Lomond along to my playing. “I wasn’t able to hear myself properly so I was trying not to take all of that in and really focus on just getting the sound out and just executing the performance in the way I wanted to.” The flashmob event happened at the Kelvingrove Museum and Nicola was joined by 80 young musicians from the area. Svend Brown, director of UNESCO Glasgow City of Music said “We wanted to take advantage of the
line of evidence during the trial. However, appeal judges Lord Justice General, Lord Gill, sitting with Lord Menzies and Lord Turnbull, agreed that the objection, was entitled to be refused. The Lord Justice General said: “In my opinion all that the disclosure showed was that people other than the appellants had reason to harm the deceased. “If the defence considered that the deceased’s status as a CHIS was important, they could have asked for a postponement to the trial. They did not.” By

Commonwealth Games and make a statement about how great classical music is and how much fun kids can have doing it.” Benedetti walked onto rapturous applause during the opening of the Commonwealth Games and she said it was a once a lifetime moment for her “It was a euphoric moment for me- that tune Loch Lomond means so much to so many people in Scotland and to have that many people singing along is not an experience classical musicians have very often so I will remember it for the rest of my life.”
James Thompson, from Kilwinning kicked a police sergeant in the head, appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week. Police were called out to Taylor’s nightclub in Byres Road at around 1am on June 29, to deal with a disturbance involving Thompson. The officers placed Thompson under arrest, at which point he threw himself on the ground. Officers then tried to stand him up, which he refused, it is claimed. Other officers were called to the scene where they bundled him into a car. A police sergeant sat in thr front seat, where Thompson leaned back and kicked him several times in the back of the head. Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane said: “This wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t taken so much to drink, is what you’re going to tell me?” Mr Holliman, his lawyer then replied that Thompsons antics were caused by that but he has also been drinking on top of medications he was taking for depression, cystic fibrosis and diabetes. It is claimed that he was never told not to drink alcohol, but only to watch how much he consumed and had not been prepared for the toll it took on him. Sheriff McFarlane told Thompson: “I sincerely hope you’ve learned your lesson, and while the medical advice may be to watch what you drink, I hope you’ll take a different view on this following your conviction.” Thompson was fined £600. The ‘garden’ has been created by the tenants and in use for four years on the roof of shops from 250-264 Dumbarton road. With the roof in need of repair, the residents knew they would have to move the garden, but believed that they would be able to replace it once repairs had been completed. A letter from Partick Housing Association, who are factors of the tenement, gave them just eight days to remove everything and informed them it would no longer be permitted. The title deeds to the flats state that the area can only be used for depositing rubbish into the bin area and for drying clothes on washing lines. A Partick Housing Association spokesman said they were happy to: “act as an intermediary with the owners of the roof space on behalf of the residents to negotiate usage and access in future to find a compromise which suits both parties.” By

Refunds for those affected by Games travel problems.

Glasgow City Council celebrates 5000th person employment record Glasgow City Council’s £50m Games Legacy programme known as the ‘Glasgow Guarantee’ has welcomed its 5000th unemployed candidate into the world of work.
James Gunn, 16, from Castlemilk, gained a job as an apprentice child carer with Sinclair Nursery Ltd in Glasgow as a result of the project.
People who missed events due to the overwhelmed transport services over the opening weekend of the Commonwealth Games have been told they can apply for refunds. With an estimated seven hundred thousand people travelling into Glasgow, the demand for transport was simply too much for the services to cope with. The result was many people being late or missing events entirely – the athletics at Hampden being one of the worst affected. Fans were left to queue for hours at park and ride facilities, simply
unprepared to deal with the influx of visitors. Games organiser, Glasgow 2014 have said spectators should keep tickets and booking reference numbers for park and ride services. Requests for refunds will be dealt with on a caseby-case basis. They have also advised that no refunds will be issued at any of the Games ticket offices. Organisers defended the preparation and said that the overwhelming popularity of the Games had caused it to be a victim of it’s own success. David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014
chief executive said: ”We had a few issues during this week that arose, particularly around the park and ride solutions. ...But I think overall the planning that’s been done, the strengthening in terms of capacity, has responded to unprecedented demand.” Extra buses were used on Monday to ensure there would be no further travel issues, with extra staff also on hand at the larger venues in use. Spectators looking to request a refund should contact Glasgow 2014 via email to ‘contactus@glasgow2014.com’ By
Jordan McConville
Commenting on his success, James said: “I’m delighted to have secured a job working in child care. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do – to the extent that at one stage I even thought about becoming a children’s entertainer! “Everyone at the nursery is very welcoming, and I have my own mentor who ensures I get the best training and support.
“I know how difficult the jobs market still is, so I’m incredibly grateful to find that it only took a few weeks between leaving school at the end of May before I found out I started my new job at the beginning of June. Living in Glasgow has allowed me access to the Glasgow Guarantee and the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative – without this help I don’t know how long it would have taken me to find a job.”
The announcement comes as part of Legacy Day 30 July for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, which will celebrate the economic, cultural, educational and sporting legacy the Games has brought to the city. Business leaders in Glasgow will meet to discuss how both the Glasgow Guarantee and the Games have helped their businesses to grow. These programmes include the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative (CAI), the Commonwealth Jobs Fund (CJF), the Commonwealth Graduate Fund (CGF) and the Commonwealth Youth Fund (CYF). To date, 3,294 people have found jobs through the CAI, making it the largest of the four programmes.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “We are committed to helping as many Glasgow–based youngsters as we can to find suitable, sustainable employment in the city. I wholeheartedly congratulate James ...James is another great example of a young person who has been helped into a fantastic role doing exactly the type of job he wants to do, who may otherwise have remained unemployed as a result of a difficult jobs market.

Head teacher Siobhan McColgan said: “We were over the moon to be awarded FairAchiever status. “This is the highest of the Fairtrade awards for schools.”
The committee works year round to raise awareness of how Fairtrade can make the world a fairer place. They hold events and activities and meet regularly to monitor progress, share ideas and make future plans. Pupils take part in Fairtrade Fortnight where set up Fairtrade stalls organised by the committee, go to assemblies and take part in themed lessons and activities. They also went bananas with an event to boost fair trade of the fruit. The committee organised a ‘celebrate bananas’ event to spread the message that action is needed to get banana growers a fairer deal and asked pupils and parents to sign a ‘make bananas fair’ petition.

Glasgow 2014 creates history as millions are raised for children
An amazing £3.5 million was raised by the public last night via text and online donations at the Glasgow 2014 Opening Ceremony, in the first such fundraiser of its kind ever to take place. Films telling stories of UNICEF’s work in each region of the Commonwealth were played as part of the athletes’ parade, which culminated in a single unifying moment during the Ceremony when everyone across the Commonwealth – spectators, athletes and viewers – were all invited to join together to Put Children First. During this moment, a heartfelt appeal was made by James McAvoy and Sir Chris Hoy live in Celtic Park stadium, leading to more than 500,000 text donations from the UK
public within one hour. Donations are still coming in from UK and across the Commonwealth. The figure will be added to the £ 1.2 million pounds already raised for the ground breaking partnership between leading children’s organisation UNICEF, Glasgow 2014 and the Commonwealth Games Federation before the Opening Ceremony, bringing the current total to £4.7 million pounds. Actor and UNICEF supporter James McAvoy said: “As a son of Scotland I couldn’t have been prouder to have been part of last night’s Opening
Ceremony and support the incredible partnership with UNICEF. £3.5m raised so far and rising - wow, what a historic moment! Thank you to everyone who donated - I know your money will be making a huge difference to children all over the commonwealth.” UNICEF Ambassador, Glasgow 2014 Ambassador and cycling legend, Sir Chris Hoy said: “It’s been absolutely incredible to witness the power of such an amazing partnership between UNICEF and Glasgow 2014. “I’m immensely proud to be a UNICEF UK Ambassador and to
have visited Malawi and seen firsthand the life-saving differences we can make for children. I know how far the millions can go to help continue that amazing work. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric and to have been part of this huge first for sport and children feels very special, a truly historic moment that will never be forgotten. UNICEF UK Executive Director, David Bull, said: “Your incredibly generous support will help UNICEF save and change children’s lives around the world. We will do this in a whole range of ways; for example in Bangladesh we are tackling child
labour and child marriage, by helping to keep the most at risk children at school. In Malawi we are using sport and education to engage with young people and help reduce HIV infection. In Scotland, UNICEF UK is helping ensure all new born babies get off to the best start in life, supporting a strong nurturing bond between parents and their babies. “Thank you so much to everyone who held their hands and heads high tonight and voted to Put Children First. We couldn’t do this without you.”

CONNECTIONS World twin’s day will be held this year on the 1st of August in Twinsburg in Ohio where they have a huge get –together to celebrate - with twins arriving from all over the world. The start of Guy’s investigation came when he heard of the Death of Ross McWhirter who was known, along with his Brother Norris, for their links with the Guinness book of Records and Record Breakers.
Are you in pain or suffering with a medical problem and cannot get any form of relief? I can offer an alternative form of healing to help with imbalances in mind, body and spirit. Clinics held in various locations, please visit website for further details.

CONNECTIONS
When Ross was tragically killed it made Guy wonder if Norris had reacted in any way or felt anything at the time his brothers death, as they say that under normal circumstances, when twins pick up on things for each other it is at times when there is great emotional pain or trauma.
– this was about twenty two months before the event took place - this is only one of many predictions they have made that have come to pass.
They have been psychic since birth and have developed their gifts over the years and are now sought out by law enforcement, government and celebrities for information and help.
lady in spirit who made herself known to my mum in her bed, that I would always be protected and not to worry over me, as I was special. I found this very strange, as we were both special. I also was born unexpected at 1lb 10 oz now, back in 1968 I wasn’t expected to even make it through the night. Spending my first 6 months in hospital. My twin Ewan was 3lbs and born 5 minutes apart - him being the oldest. I don’t recall him seeing any spirits but I do remember having conversations as little children with our minds” Fiona McFadden, when I asked Fiona if she had any experiences as a twin she said, “ Yes, when my sister was in labour I felt her contractions as she was having them. We have always had a strong bond, when telling someone a story, we both do it in exactly the same way” Personally: When my twins were very young they would both talk about the lady and the man that sat on the edge of their bed reading to them and I would reply, “ They are special angels watching over you when I am busy”.
In his book he also makes reference to the twins in Alexander Dumas’s “ The Corsican Brothers” where they were comparing to a real life set of twins. In the story one twin lived in Paris and the other in Corsica. They had a telepathic connection with each other and when the one in Paris was killed during a duel the other twin in Corsica instantly felt this and makes his way to Paris to kill the duelist. Psychic twins Terry and Linda Jamison have been predicting world events for years. In November of 1999 they used their divination tool – which is automatic writing [free hand writing that psychics use to tune into and bring forward information from spirit] to pin point the disaster at the world trade centre on 9/ 11 where they said 5,000 people would lose their lives
It would seem they were a great threat to the FBI as they began closing down all of their web site’s that had any form of prediction on them. In my opinion there is no denying that there is a special bond that forms between twins and having a set of my own I know only too well just how connected they can be. I asked on a social media site if anyone had any experiences of being a twin and the connection that they have with their sibling- here is what Maxine and Fiona had to say. Maxine Smith told me “ as a child I sensed and saw spirit and as a school age child I could feel when my twin brother was being bullied, I would see this in my minds eye and know exactly where to go to get him and fight the bullies. My mum had been told by a
One day while getting them washed and ready to go out I accidently brushed against one of my daughters eye’s – anyway, when I had finished getting her ready I called on the other one – they passed each other in the hallway with not a word between them but, when she got to me, the first thing she said was – “don’t hurt my eye mummy”. They would have conversations with each other in their sleep and I always knew from an early age that they would be quite tuned in if not very psychic, as it turns out they both have great psychic abilities but in different areas. So, telepathy, psychic ability or just coincidence - you need to make your own mind up but, if you have a story you would like to share we would be delighted to hear about it so drop us a wee email.

Archangel Azrael
The Archangel Azrael’s name means – who god helps.
This divine Archangel is one of my very favourite angels, the colour of his aura is a very pale yellow or vanilla cream, his energy is very loving and compassionate and he is a source of quiet strength and unconditional love. Archangel Azrael’s has a huge purpose as one of his primarily roles is to help our loved ones cross over to heaven at their time of physical death. He will do everything to bring comfort and to make sure there is no suffering as he helps them transition to the next part of their journey. He also works to help everyone who is going through grief; there are many forms of grief: from the loss of a loved one or from the loss of a beloved pet. We can also feel grief with the ending of a relationship or a job. Grief can also be experienced at times in our life where things have not worked out the way we wished they would. Grief not only affects us mentally but can also affect us physically and spiritually. This can be seen in a disturbance to our eating habits and can even have a detrimental effect on our sleeping patterns. This is where Archangel Azrael can really help; all you need to do is ask him to help ease your grief. Because of the laws of free will he is not allowed to affect our lives in a major way unless we give him permission. When you ask for help this very Divine angel will come to your side and surround you in unconditional love and healing light to bring comfort and support and also ease the pain of grief and help you cope, be it mentally, physically or spiritually. Archangel Azrael has great respect for the process of grieving and will always respect your boundaries but know that he will be there to give you strength and love whenever you need it. If you ask him for his help he can bring in other angels alongside you and your loved ones and will do everything within god’s power to support you with dynamic love.
Our loved ones give us many signs that they are still watching over us and that the cord of love that we shared with them is always there, as love never dies. Azrael can also help you connect with your loved one in heaven by bringing them through in a dream, so you can see and feel their love and also know for yourself, that they are all right. As a practising medium I find that most people who come to me want to know that they’re loved ones are all right and maybe even find out that they are no longer suffering. The answer is always the same that they are well and continuing the next part of their journey and that they hear the loving words we say to them. You can also ask Azrael to surround grieving family and friends with healing energy and divine light in order to help them cope and to bring them comfort. He can lend them support in material, spiritual and emotional ways. There are two crystals, which are very helpful at times of grief, one is a creamy Yellow Calcite, this crystal is aligned with Archangel Azrael’s energy so holding or wearing this may lead to additional comfort. The other crystal is Green Tourmaline which is rejuvenating and unblocks the heart chakra so that you can start to feel the joy and vitality for life again. Both Raphael and Azrael’s energies are aligned to this crystal. Personal experience; I was at the transitioning of my stepfather who I love with all my heart. He had a love for classical music and this was his passion and brought him great joy and peace. As my mum and I sat with him during his transition I could see my stepfather’s mother had joined us from heaven and was in the room, she had come to help him cross over. There were also many angels, and of course Archangel Azrael was there. At my stepfather’s time of crossing I could hear the most angelic music and divine angels singing. This music was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard and it touched my heart and soul. As the tears ran down my face I was so uplifted to know that the angels had brought him the music which would help ease and comfort him in his transition. So please know that the angels will also do everything they can to make the transition to heaven for your family and friends with unconditional love and light. Wishing you all millions of angel blessings. For more details contact Diane on: diane4angels@aol.com

Inner Peace
With our busy and hectic lives it’s easy to get caught up in the everyday hamster wheel, which we call life. We end up in the live to work syndrome instead of valuing the things that bring us a sense of inner calm. It’s all too easy to end up like this and for it to become the “Norm” but breaking the chains that restrict and limit is not rocket science in fact, its child’s play but, this is where the problem lies because, if we see it as being too easy we can’t see the value and it gets over looked and we continue on the wheel in our stressful life. Here are 7 steps to help you relax and focus on yourself and your own needs. 1- Meditation, this doesn’t have to mean you sit with crossed legs saying OM for long periods of time - it can mean a walk in nature, sitting by the water and connecting with the energy or even a candle meditation. Simple light a candle with a colour of you’re choosing, sit quietly and watch the flame flickering away. Don’t think about anything in particular just allow your thoughts to float by. Doing this can be so relaxing and helps to clear your mind of unwanted thoughts and issues. 2 – Music, as the saying goes, music tames the savage beast: listening to a piece of music can help to change
and lift your mood. When we listen to music we tune into the vibration of sound, this allows us to fine tune our own energy altering it from on level to another. If you’re feeling low then listen to something that’s up beat, if your energy is in need of grounding then something a more subtle type of music is needed. 3 – Create a vision board, focusing on the things you do want to bring into your life is so much more positive than looking at the things you don’t want. Vision boards serve as a focus for your energy and help to attract and manifest what you want in your life. Find yourself a large piece of paper or board, onto this place images and words relating to your wishes and desires put this in a place where you will see it everyday to help energise it and remind you of your dreams. 4 – Crystals, you can use any crystal that you are drawn to for this but you might want to use a Rose Quartz as it brings love and joy into the heart. Simple sit in a quiet place holding the crystal of your choice and imagine that you are breathing all of your unwanted thoughts, fears and energies into it so that you are cleansed and free of burden. Once you are finished wash the crystal cold fresh running water to cleans it. 5 – Yoga, this is an amazing way to help you calm down, lower your blood pressure and just relax in
Tarot Card of the Week general. There are classes in every area and if you have not been before it is certainly worth a go. 6 – Soul food – when you are stressed and in need of relaxation then pouring junk food into your system will only agitates you and your digestion even more. Look more to the natural foods like, vegetables, salads, and fruit and drink more water to help your system to flush out any unwanted toxins. 7 – Chakra Balancing – there are seven major Chakras in the body and when your body is out of sync so are they. The chakras run from red the root chakra, orange the sacral chakra, green your heart, blue the throat, indigo the third eye and violet the crown chakra at the top of your head. To help you balance them just close your eyes and imagine each of them in turn vibrating at a level you sense to be in tune with your inner needs. Do one at a time until you have completed them all them imagining a golden light streaming from the tip of your toes moving up the front of your body and over your head down your back and underneath your feet so it encompasses you in a beautiful golden bubble protecting and grounding you. Then imagine that your feet are growing roots into the ground anchoring you to the earth’s core. When you have finished open your eyes, take a big stretch and drink lots of water.
The tarot is an ancient and powerful divination tool that has been used for centuries, its hard to pin point exactly where it originated but what we do know is that the rich and famous have consulted it to assist them in their life. Using the tarot the reader taps into it’s hidden mysteries and symbolic connections to provide the client with what lie ahead and from there they make their own choices and decisions. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means.
This week I have chosen
The Moon:
The moon is the card of illusion and casts shadows on things in and around our life and so it is important to separate the reality of a situation from the illusion when this card shows up. It is one of the Major arcane and it is linked with the star sign of Pisces, which is a water sign. The moon is also a card that connects with your intuition and if you do so in the right way it will lead you to where you need to be, its all about trust and knowing that you can make the right choices. As the moon links with the ebb and flow of the tides it also connects with hormones and emotions so its little wonder that when the moon come up in a reading it can indicate life’s ups and downs – what you are aiming for though it balance.

Crystal Power - Obsidian or Apache Tear This stone brings protection to those working at a psychic or spiritual and level and is known to the Shaman as the Apache Tear – legend has it that when the Apache were driven off their land the tears of the women landed on the ground and formed pieces of black stones.
If you are looking at expanding your psychic knowledge this is the stone you could meditate on as it is said to allow you to connect between this world and the spirit world. For me it’s a stone to carry with you if you are in need of help or feel concerned about something – use it like a worry stone and hand over your worries and concerns to it to deal with for you.

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries
Some sense of gain will allow you to transform your life making it much more balanced and in tune. This maybe what you have strived for and not that its here you can relax knowing that things are good.
Taurus
It’s as if you are in need of a cause of something to get your teeth into – you have all the knowledge and power to make things happen its just really about pin pointing where to start off from.
Gemini If your feeling like there is an emotional battle going on try and
look at the bigger more long term picture before you dive in and do anything that you may regret. Sometimes you need to come through phases before you see the light.
Cancer
Maybe a woman can assist you where finances are concerned, she has a good head for getting things into balance so swallow your pride and ask for help. In no time you could be seeing results.

Your spiritual potential maybe showing itself in a few ways and you will perhaps be in the mood to look into this side of life and see what it holds for you. I’m sensing you are in search mode for something deeper than the superficial stuff.
Virgo
You know it’s funny how others see in us what we don’t see in ourselves - this week I feel that someone will make comment on your skills, so much so that you may even look at them yourself.
Libra
Ops, you have that fire passion and sensual thing going on and you could be a magnet for the opposite sex during the week ahead. Remember though not to let it get out of control and ego takes over flattery can be misleading.
Scorpio
Patience is called for this week and you could find yourself challenged and in the midst of a whole load of things that are out with your control. Stay calm and wait for the storm to pass – which, it will.
Sagittarius
How could you make your cash work better for you? This is the thoughts you may be having right now and I feel that you could be looking into and researching ways to make this happen.
Capricorn
A friend will be there to support you in a time of need and you will be delighted that they have stepped up to the mark. You normally keep things close to your chest but a problem shared is one halved.
Aquarius You don’t stand back and wait for things to happen, quite the opposite, you are way ahead and looking at the next thing on your agenda which is a good way to be – ahead of the game.
Pisces Frustrations around personal situations will drive you mad how-
ever, if you can manage to turn those emotions into something more positive then you actually benefit from it – don’t let others steal your energy.

Each week Joan will provide messages from your loved ones in the spirit world with the aim of providing comfort. If you read one of the messages and feel that it connects with you message Joan and let her know. SPIRIT CONNECTIONS
I feel this message is for a lady who has lost her son and who is not settled due to his passing. She feels that things were not done the way they should have been and that there has been a great injustice done. I sense that your son is in the spirit world and that he is at peace on the other side. He tells me that he is worried about you and that he sends you love and to say that he would much rather you looked after yourself than torture yourself with this pain. He is like an old soul who is and was very mature for his age and he has left all of this behind him and wishes that you would too. He loves the roses you lay down for him but he doesn’t need flowers to know that you love him very much. There is something about a blue scarf and he seems to be quite happy that he has this with him. Your dreams have him in them and he is there with you so do not worry that he has left you – he blows you a kiss.
SPIRIT CONNECTIONS
Joan, Frank and the name of Chalmers is coming through from spirit – there is a gentleman who wishes to make himself known and he comes on a brother vibration. I feel this man passed with a cancer condition and that he had a difficult time for over a year before he passed. I sense that he lived alone and was a bit of a loner but his family was important to him. He also shows me an army uniform and I sense there was a connection there in the past with him – funny, he is showing me the old TV program Dad’s Army so that should bring back a memory. He just wants to thank you for being there for him and helping him as he says he would have been lost without you so, a huge thank you is coming your way. There is something about property and I sense that someone is looking for a new home just now and is a bit frustrated with the whole thing but I am being told to tell you that the right one will come along so have patience.
SPIRIT CONNECTIONS I feel the need to link with Govan and this connection is for a man there who lots his Daughter some time ago but she has been in your
thoughts very recently – not that she is not everyday but more so of late and I feel this is because you are worried about someone on the earth plane who has been looked after medically. I sense this young woman in spirit and she is such a beautiful soul, always smiling and a kind word for others and she is sending healing energy to you and for the person you are worried about. She has a great sense of humour and loved a laugh – she was so very special and I feel she is making you aware that she is in and around your energy and you will know this because the clock seems to play up for no apparent reason and then starts again, she just loves a bit of a joke as she watches you pick it up and shake it and then say “ that clock is going, we need a new one” actually you don’t just know she is around you and that she is aware that your focus is on time just now to try and get everything done. Are couples sacrificing their guest’s bank balance for their own happiness? With wedding season now upon us, it’s easy to see how the cost of a wedding can mount up – and not just for the bride and groom!
Unsurprisingly, over a third (39%) of people think it’s a big request to ask people to travel abroad for a wedding. For those couples planning a wedding abroad, there are a variety of different factors influencing their decision – from overbearing parents and warring relatives to spiraling budgets, opting for a ceremony overseas can seem

like the easier option for many. A quarter of couples planning to get married abroad admit they are doing so as it means they don’t have to invite every family member to the wedding, with more than one in six believing it would cause less arguments for them to go abroad to get hitched. Weather is also a key factor tempting British couples away from a traditional UK-based wedding. Over a third of couples getting married abroad chose to do so as they wanted guaranteed good weather and sunshine on their big day. The five most popular destinations that people want to get hitched in include: Caribbean (19%), Australia (12%), America (10%), Canada (8%) and Cyprus (8%)

Bride and gloom for wedding guests New research from Confused. com reveals that the average cost of attending a wedding abroad is more than twice as much as being a guest in the UK (£564 v £247). And with a quarter of UK couples planning to travel to distant shores in the next 18 months just to put a ring on it, their guests may be left facing a difficult situation.

Sammy-Lea Samways, head of travel insurance at Confused.com, says: “The idea of getting away from it all to wed abroad seems to be a popular concept; the lower costs of an overseas wedding being an important factor for many. “However, destination weddings can often be difficult for invited guests because of the price and time involved. It can pose the dilemma of a costly trip abroad versus the desire to see the happy couple get married. “Combining the wedding trip with an annual holiday could be a good way that guests could save money. And whether you’re a guest at a wedding or the bride and groom, we would always advise making sure you have adequate travel insurance, just in case the worst was to happen.”

20 Glasgow News | 1st August - 8th August 2014
www.glasgow-news.com
Glasgow has always been synonymous with the theater, panto, plays and the “second city of the empire” can actually lay claim to having the second oldest working theater in Britain.
The Citizens Theater which is currently undergoing a multi million pound rejuvenation which when it re opens a few years down the line. Glasgow will have in her possession one of the greatest theaters in Britain.
The Wee Theaters is a new conception, coming to fruition in Spain, Wee Theaters takes theater and plays out of its comfort zone and distributes right back into the heart of society. A play about a pub, in a real live working pub. A play centered around a bath, which takes place in a bath, while the audience sit around. Simple, Beautiful, Unique.
Theater in Glasgow has an illustrious history, so much so, that the GSA(Glasgow Art School and the RCS (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) are famous throughout the world.
Some of the biggest names on our television screens film screens and radio, hail from the GSA and RCS, David Tennant, James Mcavoy, Robbie Coltrane, Robert Carlyle, several members of Travis, Franz Ferdinand and many many more. (seriously check out both Wikipedia pages, its incredible) All hail from humble beginnings. With the enormous success of a pie, a play, and a pint in Glasgow’s Oran Mor, it has proven that Glasgow as always is at the
forefront of bringing the arts to the people of Glasgow.
After all what is the theater without a passionate audience?
We at the Glasgow News caught up with the creator of The Wee Theaters Anais Pacual to find out a little about Glasgow’s newest most unique interpretation of the Arts Anais said “Well it started in Madrid, and I seen how much people loved the format. When I came over to Glasgow and I realised how much people loved the theater over here as well, and I thought “this must work”
The remarkable format behind the Wee Theaters Glasgow, is usually three performances, e.g a play, a band and a comedy sketch. It is not exclusively contained to those three artistic endeavors though.
Thanks to the fluidity of the venues and the variety of performers, it can be any artistic performance whatsoever. Anais spoke passionately “We’re trying to move away from traditional theater plays, it’s bringing the audience into the heart of the performances, it increases the energy and the audience will feel as if they are a part of the play, they are connected.”
With each performance taking on average 20 minutes and the audience being able to choose whether to stay for every performance or if time constraints hinder, leave after one. Between performances, there is even time to catch a beverage, if you so choose.
1st August - 8th August 2014 | Glasgow News 21
www.glasgow-news.com
The Wee Theaters is also incorporating am-dram into the organic nature of the artistic performances and plays. Anais explains “We want people who have written plays, actors in college, and also we have been looking across the internet for people who might want to see their play performed. Start Now has been amazing for us.” Glasgow Film Crew has also been a massive help, we’ve found a lot of our contacts there.”
Since it began just over a month ago, Wee Theaters has had a steady influx of applicants to join the group and the numbers are increasing ever day.
We caught up with two of the Wee Theaters stars, Nicollette McKeown and David McGowan to chat about the ubiquity of the Wee Theater “We love it”, David said. “Its like a night in the pub with live action entertainment, its a tried and trusted format in Spain, and we hope that it rolls out in Glasgow.” Collette said “It’s really laid back, for people who might not be too familiar with the theater, there’s a range of different shows, live singers, scripts, improvisations, something for everybody.”
Duck, I enjoyed the script, it was original, and being involved with something new in Glasgow is quite exciting.” The plays take part upstairs in Sloans bar in Argyll Arcade in Glasgow’s City Centre (allegedly Glasgow’s oldest bar) which is a wonderful setting for a new venture in Glasgow and theater.
Where tradition meets originality, which could be exactly the perspective Wee Theaters Glasgow is looking for.
Performer David said “its distinctly Victorian, which adds an amazing atmospheric vibe to the performances and the settings.”
“Its great that there are lots of rooms for the performances to take place in, it suits the idea, it could even lead to simultaneous shows being held at the same time.” said Nicollette.
The Wee Theater aims to bring the performing arts to everyone and the audience will be able to feel the performances and the performers energy as it happens around them.
Wee Theaters Glasgow-The Best Way To Live the Performing Arts
“I was contacted to provide written material for it originally” said David, “and then the acting and directing sort of just happened alongside it, and we ended up doing a romantic comedy written by the wonderful Andrew Gunn.”
Come see for yourself. The next show is the 11th August. Tickets are going fast!

FRIDAY 1 - THURSDAY 7 AUGUST
A human adventurer teams up with a band of alien misfits to save the galaxy in this thrilling new Marvel superhero epic. Roguish Earthman Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), AKA Star-Lord, has got himself into a whole heap of trouble. He’s stolen an orb, which is also coveted by villainous psycho Ronan (Lee Pace). Ronan will stop at nothing to retrieve the mysterious artefact. This forces our charismatic anti-hero to forge an alliance with an unlikely quartet of rival cosmic outlaws. His crew comprises vengeance-crazed warrior Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), gun-toting Rocket the raccoon (Bradley Cooper), greenskinned deadly assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and tree-like humanoid Groot (Vin Diesel). But when Quill learns of the orb’s real power, a last-ditch battle for the galaxy ensues! This awesome new addition to the Marvel cinematic universe also features a shavenheaded Karen Gillan as Ronan’s sidekick Nebula and introduces Josh Brolin as the voice of sinister supervillain Thanos.
Step Up 5 3D Stars of the previous Step Up films come together for the ultimate incredible dance battle! Sean (Ryan Guzman) and his dance crew have been struggling for more than a year to get their break in Hollywood. He soldiers on after everyone else gives up, refusing to abandon his dream. Then he hears of a dance contest in Las Vegas. This could provide the breakthrough he’s been looking for, as the winners get their own show. Now he needs to assemble a new crew. He teams up with Moose (Adam Sevani) and Andie (Briana Evigan), recruiting such familiar faces as the Santiago Twins (Martin Lombard) and Jenny Kido (Mari Koda). This stunning spectacle is led by Ryan Guzman from ‘Step Up 4: Miami Heat’ and Briana Evigan from ‘Step Up 2: The Streets’. It brings together nearly a dozen of our favourite dancers from the previous four ‘Step Up’ movies for the showdown to end them all!
The Nut Job An outcast squirrel stages a heist to feed his park-dwelling pals in this nutty animated family comedy! When selfish Surly Squirrel (Will Arnett) manages to destroy his park’s only source of food, he’s banished by critter leader Raccoon (Liam Neeson). So he hatches a plan to raid a nut shop, recruiting a crack team of his reluctant former furry friends to help out. This includes fellow squirrels Grayson (Brendan Fraser) and Andie (Katherine Heigl) and a trio of groundhogs led by Jimmy (Gabriel Iglesias). Also along for the ride is a pug named Precious (Maya Rudolph), who’s the guard dog for a gang of human criminals. They’re using the nut emporium to stage a raid on the bank next door! Unfolding in a lovingly rendered period setting, this appealing tale of a grouchy squirrel who discovers his inner hero is expanded by former Pixar and Disney animator Peter Lepeniotis from his award-winning short film.
Planes 2 Lovable Dusty Crophopper becomes an aerial firefighter in Disney’s high-flying animated sequel. Engine damage means that plucky Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook) may never race again. But he gets a second chance at heroism when he joins an elite squad of firefighting aircraft. Their task is to protect the historic, wildfireprone Piston Peak National Park. The team is led by tough-as-old-boots veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter Blade Ranger (Ed Harris). He’s initially sceptical about taking on the rookie. But perky air tanker Dipper (Julie Bowen) has a crush on Dusty, and he quickly bonds with the rest of the colourful gang. Their ranks include wise American Indian heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (Wes Studi), jolly ex-military transport plane Cabbie (Dale Dye), and a quintet of fearless all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. When a raging wildfire tests them to the limit, Dusty learns a big lesson about being a hero

Paul Hollywood The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 8pm After four years of being tucked away on BBC Two, the bakery contest makes the move to the prime channel. Hosted by comedy duo Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, it sees a dozen amateur cooks spend a couple of days hidden away in a tent-cum-kitchen, where they are challenged to come up with a selection of cakes, breads, biscuits and desserts. Sweet and savoury judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood cast a critical eye over their efforts before deciding each week who is the Star Baker – and who will be hanging up their apron.

Cara for Topshop When we found out in June that Cara Delevingne would be appearing as the new face of Topshop, we were beyond excited. Cara, who has previously modelled for the likes of Chanel, Mulberry and Burberry, will feature as the first ever solo face of the high street store. The campaign was styled by Topshop’s Creative Director Kate Phelan and shot in London. These images were revealed this week, causing Cara fans to shriek with delight. To keep up to date on the the going-on with Cara, go to www.topshop.com to sign up.
Smart Girls Guide to...Keeping Cool
Unless you have been out of the country, you will have noticed that Scotland has been scorching the past few weeks. The weather has been fantastic, with parts of the country hitting almost 30C. However, us Scots are not used to such high temperatures and keeping cool without our house being kitted out with air conditioning. Don’t get yourself in a sweaty tizzy just yet, read our guide and chill out!
up in B&M’s or Poundstretchers for around £10 depending on the size. Who knows how long we will need them so a cheap one will do! Sit a bowl of ice in front of it and it will blow cold air.
Invest in a fan. Portable fans can be picked
Drink lots of water. Keeping yourself hydrated
Run your wrists under ice cold water. This will cool you down instantly and apparently keep you cool for up to an hour. It is a great trick if you’re working in a bar or restaurant and run off your feet.
is a key way to cool down. Add some diluting juice for some variety. Too hot to sleep? Run a face cloth under cold water and squeeze it out. Fold it over and lie with it on your forehead. Another tip is to fill a hot water bottle with cold water, wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. This will keep the bed cool. Keep lights off, as the bulbs will warm the room. Light candles or just a small lamp if need be.
Have a cool shower. Rather than a freezing cold shower – which will shock your body into heating up – a luke warm shower will cool you down. Keep your blinds or curtains drawn during the day. Ever wondered why houses and apartments abroad have shutters on their windows? They keep them closed throughout the day, opening them slightly to let some light in. By

Go Krazy for The Big Review Kimonos The best bit about my job is discovering beauty brands that I might not have otherwise heard of. When I heard about Shavata and as someone who fills their eyebrows in daily, I couldn’t wait to try their products. Shavata specialise in brows and lashes. I tested out the Lash Fabricator, Double Ended Eyebrow Pencil and the Brow Perfector. Here is what I thought of them...
If there is an item of clothing that should be in everyone’s wardrobes this summer, it’s the kimono. Dressed up or down, it is perfect for any occasion. It is great to take on holiday as it can go from beach to bar. Here are our top picks, dressed up or down... By Kaitlin McManus
Dress it up!
Dress it down!
Shavata Lash Fabricator When I heard about a product that involved putting fibres on your eyelashes, I had to try it! I have tried almost every mascara under the sun on the hunt for a mascara that gives you that false-lash effect – without the need for strip lashes. To be fair, strip lashes are great for nights out but can be a bit much for everyday use.
Black Cat Eye Sunglasses New Look
£7.99
There is no other product that i’ve heard of that does this so I was excited to try it. Basically, it looks like a mascara, apart from the wand is covered in little fibres. What you do is, you apply mascara, then use the Fabricator wand like a mascara to coat the lashes, before applying another layer of mascara to seal it. I really did see a difference using the Fabricator and have been using it ever since. Top tip – some fibres can fall while you apply, so don’t use the fabricator after applying lip gloss to avoid furry lips!
Brow Perfector & Double Ended Eyebrow Pencil I used these two products together to achieve perfect brows. I used the pencil to draw the shape, then filled it in with the Brow Perfector. The pencil comes in two different shades, Dawn for blondes and Dusk, a darker shade for other hair colours. I used Dusk, as I have dark brown hair. I then filled in the shape with the Brow Perfector. The Brow Perfector kit includes three crème shades that go on like powder. They cover the skin and the hairs so it can be used to cover grey hairs. Shavata instructs to go one shade darker with brows than your hair colour. So I used the almost black colour in the middle and blended the brown at the straight edges, for a more natural look. Both products are great and work really well together. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this brand for both brow pro’s and beginners, as Shavata have made having beautiful eyebrows as easy to achieve as putting on your morning lippy! By

Rising property prices putting people off buying Increasing property prices have crushed confidence in buyers, a new survey has revealed.
According to the latest Halifax Housing Market Confidence tracker, buyers are uncertain to buy, howevers sellers have never been more optimistic. The survey showed that 57% think it is a good time to sell within the next year, while 32% feel it’s a bad time. This is the highest score the survey
has seen since it first started in 2011.
However, in comparison, the percentage of people who believe it is a good time to buy, has fallen to 53%, which is the biggest fall since the trackers inception. Commenting on the results, Craig McKinlay, Mortgages Director at Halifax said: “Over the past two years consumer confidence has continued to grow, however it appears that we’ve reached a tipping point with

the equilibrium between buyers and sellers much more out of sync. “The results highlight the regional variations as now people believe that it’s a good time for to sell but not buy, particularly in London and the South East where house price expectations are generally higher and buyers appear to be less inclined to rush into a buying a property as we have seen over the past 12 months.” By

Households encouraged to think renewable energy
A new online tool to help householders save money on bills by installing a renewable heating system in their home, launched today. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Payment Calculator developed jointly by the Scottish Government and the UK Government, will help householders to make informed decisions by more accurately estimating what payments they could receive if they decide to apply for the RHI. Welcoming the new tool Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “The RHI provides payments to householders who install renewable energy heating
systems in their homes. It was introduced to incentivise the use of heat produced from renewable sources, such as wood fuel or heat pumps. “Renewable heat can not only be used to supply individual homes and businesses, but can be used for district heating to supply large quantities of heat at much cheaper rates. In an era of high energy costs, these are important benefits.” Mike Thornton, Director of Energy Saving Trust Scotland, said: “We welcome the launch... With rising energy bills and worries about energy security, there needs to be a major transformation in the way we heat our homes.”

Warm Home Discount for SSE customers now open Glasgow South West MP, Ian Davidson, is today alerting his Glasgow South West constituents who are SSE customers that the Warm Home Discount scheme for the forthcoming winter has been launched.
The Warm Home Discount is £140 rebate for eligible low income and vulnerable households to help with their electricity bills. Warm Home Discount applies automatically to reduce bills for people that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) considers part of a ‘core group’. The ‘core group’ are those who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit only (not just the State Pension) or the Guarantee Credit element and the Savings Credit element of Pension Credit.
If this is you, then you automatically qualify for the reduction and the DWP will contact you between September 2014 and November 2014 to give you information.
The latest to announce their version of the scheme open for 2014/15 is SSE. Alerting local people to the scheme and the need for vulnerable groups to reapply, Ian Davidson MP said: “Each provider involved runs their own scheme for the broader group, so even if you got it last year it’s important to
Scottish property market shows sustained growth
The Scottish property market has shown sustained growth over the course of the last year according to new figures.
Other vulnerable people known as the ‘broader group’ households may qualify, however it depends if their supplier is in the scheme and they do need to remember to apply each year. check with your provider. “Energy bills are a big part of the cost-of-living crisis, which is why Labour has pledged to freeze gas and electricity bills for everyone from next year, but for now I’m keen to ensure no vulnerable person entitled misses out on the Warm Homes Discount.
“There may be help available now to reduce the bill for vulnerable people, but you still need to check to see if you can get it under your supplier’s scheme and remember to reapply each year. “If in doubt, please give your supplier a call to find out.”
Statistics released by registers of Scotland have revealed that the number of residential properties sold around Scotland in the first quarter of the year had an increase of 22.4%percent compared to the same period in 2013. Registers of Scotland director of commercial services Kenny Crawford said “This is the fourth consecutive quarter that volumes have increased in excess of 22% percent on the previous year, demonstrating sustained growth in the Scottish property market.”

Our work is powered by people like you Coronary heart disease kills over 900 people in Glasgow every year. Thousands more people are living with it. That’s why we’re leading the fight against heart disease here. We’ve invested £3 million in a Centre of Research Excellence at the University of Glasgow where scientists will identify new tests and treatments to prevent and cure heart disease. We’ve provided 100 defibrillators and we’re investing £100,000 to help young people choose healthier lifestyles so they can avoid heart disease. But we need help to fund this vital work. That’s why we rely on people like Rose who has done collections and raffles, held red-themed dinner parties, taken part in our Ramp up the Red fundraising in February, collected shops donations and done a sponsored swim. She says: “I get a real buzz out of organising events and bringing people together. Police to check mobile phones after crashes.
High street companies using ‘bounty hunter’ parking firms to fine drivers.
Motorists across the United Kingdom are being caught out by companies employed by large, high street firms to police the use of their car parks.
Police in the United Kingdom are to begin checking drivers’ mobiles phones after crashes to determine whether their use was a factor. New guidelines issued by the Association of Chief Police officers say that officers should be checking phones for texts and calls at the time of the incident in all car accidents. Previously this was only done where drivers were seriously injured or killed. With the new powers, police would be
able to confiscate phone after crashes to be used as evidence in prosecution. Mobile distractions while driving are thought to be the cause of more than five hundred serious injuries – including deaths – each year on UK roads. With the rise of people posting on social media, there have been calls to clamp down on those using mobile devices behind the wheel. Ed Morrow of road safety charity Brake said: “We are fully supportive of the efforts by the police to clamp
down on mobile phone use at the wheel. Offenders need to know they will be caught, they will be prosecuted, and there will be serious consequences.” Further measures may also be implemented to discourage people from using their phone while driving. The penalty may be increased from three points to six on the drivers’ licence, which would result in a ban if caught twice. By

50 year old Ferrari set to sell for £20 million
Drivers are being fined £100 for being judged to have overstayed in car parks. These method have arisen after the outlawing of clamping cars deemed to be on private land in 2012. With these companies now simply issuing fines and using scare tactics for force drivers to pay up. The penalty notices are similar to those handed out by council traffic wardens but do not have the same legal authority as those official fines. Many unsuspecting drivers pay the fine, not realising they have a good chance of winning an appeal.
The car, which was handbuilt fifty years ago, was designed as a motorsport car but has mainly been used as a road vehicle.
Sold for less than £1 million at an auction in the mid-1990s, the car will likely reach upto twenty times that now. The beautiful grey, 275 GTB/C Speciale is one of only three ever made and auctioneers, RM Auctions, hope its rarity, good condition and stunning exterior will see it fetch a record fee when it goes under the hammer.
The other two cars are in the possession of private collectors and it is not thought that they will be up for grabs any time soon. The auction is set for Monterey, California over the weekend of August 15-16. By
Nick Millar
Trying to retrieve the money from the drivers through the courts is rarely done, due to the cost and the high chance drivers will see their fine overturned. Drivers’ lack of knowledge regarding what authority these companies actually have, along with the fear of fines being increased or the threat of criminal action is what the parking firms rely on to make money. Cost of driving licence to be reduced.
The government has announced plans to cut the cost of applying for driving licences.
A 1965 model Ferrari is expected to fetch an incredible £20 million when it goes under auction in California next month.
The firms tend to follow up with official looking letters to the homes of drivers who ignore the original penalty notice and this is often enough to scare people into paying. The notices, however, are not backed by criminal law and can only be pursued through the civil courts.
First time applications will be reduced to £34 from £50, while 10 year renewals will be cut from £20 to £14. The price of tacograph cards, used be commercial drivers, will also drop from £38 to £32. The roads minister Stephen Hammond said: “The government is determined to help keep the costs of motoring down. This includes passing on any savings that DVLA makes by continuing to reduce their
running costs. We want to ensure those savings are passed onto the motorist and that is why we are planning on cutting the costs associated with getting a driving licence.” The total savings for drivers is expected to be nearly £18 million per year, according to the Department for Transport. With the cost of driving being so significant, this move to reduce it in some way will be welcomed by all car users. By

Silverstone classic race driver suffers tragedy A classic race at the world famous Silverstone Racetrack suffered a tragedy as a driver died after clipping his car against another and rolled over, killing the driver inside. Denis Welch, 69, from Staffordshire, was driving a 1960 Lotus, in a race for pre 1966 Grand Prix cars at the Northhampton circuit on Sunday. Welch was taken to the medical centre at Silverstone following the accident but died from his injuries. The 69 year old was a well known and respected competitor in classic car circles and his Staffordshire based company, Denis Welch Motorsport, supplied parts for classic cars from its base in Yoxall near Lichfield. The Motor Sports Association said it was investigating the accident. The organisers on the Silverstone
Classic website said: “It is with great regret that the organisers of the Silverstone Classic have to report that, following an accident in a race for HGPCA, pre 66 Grand Prix Cars.” Condolences have been sent to the well liked and well respected man’s family. The MSA added “The relevant authorities have been informed and a full investigation will be carried out into the incident. “As any serious incident in and around UK motor sport the MSA, the organising club and the circuit operators are now working closely with the police and other agencies to establish precisely what happened. The MSA, The Historic Sports Car Club and Silverstone extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Welch.” By

The Ford Fiesta became the UK’s best-selling vehicle nameplate of all time this month when total sales topped 4,115,000. Key Dates in the Life of the Ford Fiesta...
The design of the Ford Fiesta has been evolving ever since it was launched in 1976. Here are a few highlights during this time... 1975: Fiesta name chosen by Henry Ford II 1978: Fiesta wins British Design Council Award.
First launched in 1976, the Fiesta has led the small car segment in the UK for 27 of the 37 years and has been Britain’s best-selling car since 2009 when it overtook the Ford Focus. This month it surpassed the historic record of the Ford Escort which sold 4,105,961 in the 32 years it was on sale in the UK from 1968 through to 2000. Ford has added its cherished “FMC1” registration to a Fiesta destined for Scotland for the Commonwealth Games to mark the UK favourite’s landmark achievement. Netball competitor Sasha Corbin, one of Ford’s athlete ambassadors, chose a Ford Fiesta for the Games – one of the 1,120 Fords supporting the event in Scotland this month. UK-based engineers at Ford’s research
and development centre at Dunton, in Essex, and at Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre, in East London, develop all powertrains for the Ford Fiesta. Dunton Technical Centre is home to Ford’s latest technical masterpiece – the EcoBoost range, including the 1.0-litre named International Engine of the Year for an unprecedented third consecutive year. The 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that powers the hot Fiesta ST is manufactured at the Bridgend Engine Plant, South Wales.
For example, it would now take more than 80 modern-day Fiestas to generate the NOx emissions of a single 1976 Mk1 model. This first-generation Fiesta, with the 46PS four-cylinder 950cc petrol engine, weighed around 800kg and achieved 37.7mpg, with CO2 emissions of almost 150g/km. Today’s fully-equipped model, with the 1.0-litre 100PS EcoBoost engine, weighs nearly 1,100kg, yet boasts a combined fuel economy of 65.7mpg and just 99g/km CO2 emissions.
Dagenham Diesel Centre specialises in the engineering and production of high-tech, low CO2 diesel engines for virtually all of Ford’s line-up of cars and commercial vehicles, across Europe and beyond, including the new 1.5-litre TDCi diesel for Fiesta.
More than 40 per cent of Fiesta buyers in the UK today choose the turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, and almost 90 per cent opt for higher level specification – Zetec, Zetec S, Titanium, Titanium X and ST models with the Ford SYNC voice-controlled connectivity system.
Technical progress since the original Fiesta was introduced is a step-change.
The most popular Ford Fiesta series
in Britain is the Zetec, priced at £12,945, and features MyKey (limiting vehicle speed and audio volume for novice drivers), radio/CD with USB connection, remote central locking, electrically operated front windows, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, air conditioning, Hill Launch Assist, seven airbags, Electronic Stability Programme and headlight courtesy delay. Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain chairman and managing director, said: “The Ford Fiesta has gone from strength to strength and today’s car combines style, value, driving dynamics and remarkable technologies such as the multi-awardwinning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. It continues to outsell its nearest retail competitor by more than two to one – and that really tells the story of this extraordinary car.”
1979: Millionth Fiesta built for worldwide sales. 1984: First Fiesta runs on leadfree petrol. 1993: Driver airbags standard. 2003: Three-door version 2005: 150PS Fiesta ST launched – most powerful to date 2006: Refreshed Fiesta launched with voice activation and Bluetooth 2009: Fiesta makes north American debut 2011: Fiesta RS world rally car makes its competitive debut 2012: New Fiesta is launched 2014: 1.0-litre EcoBoost, triple time winner of International Engine of the Year.

Glasgow City Scots hit target striving and aim for more forward at top of SWPL
Ross Murdoch
Glasgow City moved seven points clear at the top of the SWPL after defeating Spartans 4-2 thanks to goals from Abbi Grant, Julie Nelson, Eilish McSorley and Leanne Ross. Sarah Ewens responded twice for the home side, but it was not enough and maximum points went to the reigning Champions who continue their 100% run in all competitions so far. City took the lead through Abbi Grant. Fiona Brown cut inside and hit a curling shot towards the far post. Rachel Harrison in the Spartans net did well to save, but could only parry to Abbi Grant who finished from close range. On the half hour mark, City made it 2-0 when Suzanne Lappin crossed for Julie Nelson to head home and minutes later, central defensive partner Eilish McSorley got the third firing low past Harrison inside a crowded penalty box after a Leanne Ross shot had come back off the cross bar. Shortly before half time, a poor clearance at the back for City,
presented Sarah Ewens with an opportunity in the box and she took full advantage firing past Lee Alexander in the City nets to get her side back in the game. Captain Leanne Ross scored with a free kick from outside the area to put the away side 4-1 up, but Sarah Ewens reduced the deficit once more scoring from a dead ball situation herself. City pushed for one more in the last five minutes, but Suzanne Lappin’s shot which came back off the cross bar was as close as the visitors got. Final score 4-2. Commenting on the match, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “It was pleasing to get three points and it showed that the break had an effect on us. We were a little bit less assured than we normally are and there was never really a flow to our game today. However, we managed to get goals at good times and that kind of knocked the stuffing out of Spartans and coupled with the Rangers and Hibernian result (2-2) we have strengthened our position at the top of the League.”
By Monday, the gold medal record was broken. By Tuesday the overall record followed in a tremendous start for Team Scotland’s athletes. Not even half way through the events and Scotland was no longer looking back, but forward to Gold Coast in 2018 and how high they can set the bar for the athletes that will travel to Australia in four years time. The Hydro was even turned gold to honour the athletes that have ensured this Games will go down in history as a massive success. The importance of a fast start was stressed in the build-up and Team Scotland delivered with medals being collected thick and fast throughout the opening days. Spectators at Tollcross pool roared with joy as Hannah Miley won gold in the 400 metres individual medley on the opening night. An unexpected second place for Games poster boy Michael Jamieson was disappointing,
but with Ross Murdoch claiming the victory ahead of him in the 200m breaststroke we were given one of the highlights of the Games. The 20 year old clearly could not believe he had taken gold and fought hard to fight back tears on the podium. Medal records weren’t the only ones the 2014 athletes were breaking. Jen McIntosh claimed a silver and bronze in the 50m rifle three positions and 50m rifle prone respectively, making her Scotland’s most successful female athlete in Commonwealth history. Perhaps the only disappointed Scot was McIntosh’s own mother who had held the record previously. Kimberly Renicks won Scotland’s first gold in the 48kg judo and to make sure the family dinner wasn’t too tense, older sister Louise later claimed gold in the 52kg final. Medal number 34, which took Team Scotland past their previous best set at Edinburgh’s 1986 Games, came in the men’s team gymnastics – a first for Scotland in any team gymnastics event.
Hannah Miley
Men’s bowls pair, Alex Marshall and Peter Foster, strolled to victory over Malaysia in their final, securing Scotland record breaking 12th gold in the process. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the games so far came in the para-sport 100 metres breaststroke. 13 year old Erraid Davies provided an incredible effort to win bronze as Scotland’s youngest ever Commonwealth Games athlete. The track and field events weren’t expected to provide much success for Team Scotland, but Libby Clegg ensured the national stadium got to belt out Flower of Scotland as she claimed victory in the women’s 100m T12. Many more Scots have enjoyed success and hopefully there are many more medals set to remain in Scotland also as the team look to build upon this incredible start and giving those who will compete in future Games a tough record to beat. Fans anger at Glasgow Tigers secret plan to sell chiefs revealed their Murray Park deep disappointment Rangers’ supporters group the Union of Fans are demanding answers from the clubs board as they feel plans are under way to sell off the clubs training base to help ease money issues.
With the club looking for ways to raise the funds to see them through this season, the sale and leaseback of Murray Park is thought to be considered an option. Rangers released a statement on Monday confirming they will not use the club’s Ibrox stadium in any deal but neglected to mention their Auchenhowie training grounds and any plans regarding this valuable club asset. The Union of Fans feel that the carefullyworded statement demonstrates the board’s intention to use Murray Park in cash raising efforts. The group has been in negotiations with the club’s board, with them wanting written guarantees over the club’s assets and how they will be kept under club control. The supporters group said: “The board continues to refuse to give any legally binding safeguard over Ibrox and we believe they are actively looking at a sale and leaseback of Murray Park – a vital asset if we are ever to properly develop our own talent. They have shown no commitment to protecting the club’s assets.” While the sale of the training ground is unthinkable for many supporters, the board look to be running out of ideas for ways to raise much needed cash. A proposed share issue, set for later in the year, looks like it will fail to raise anywhere near the £8 million target. By

after Berwick ran out convincing winners at Ashfield today.
The Bandits were anything but robbers as they fully deserved to take home all four Premier League points in the Glasgow rain. But the home side were left reeling after Kevin Wolbert, signed in the winter as their number one rider, scored just two. His afternoon included a defeat by visiting reserve Liam Carr, who Wolbert couldn’t overcome in heat six despite four laps on his tail. Glasgow’s cause was further impaired when Christian Henry withdrew from the meeting with a recurrence of a previous injury, having failed to complete four laps, which left the Tigers a rider short in two races. One of the few positives was the return to track of French 18-year-old Dimitri Berge, whose four points was a good return after three months out the sport. There were also strong showings from Anders Thomsen and Theo Pijper who both hit double figures. However, that was no consolation to stand-in team managers Colin Hamilton and Alan Dick who insist they will go back to the drawing board in a bid to salvage the Tigers’ season. Hamilton said: “As far as the result goes, I’m deeply disappointed, to say the least. I know that Alan is as well. “We’re going to have to re-look at the whole situation, because sometimes enough is enough.” Glasgow’s Rusty Harrison was unlucky to post a score of just four.
Warriors Prop undergoes surgery
Warriors prop Jon Welsh has undergone shoulder surgery and is expected to be out of action for the first few months of the season. The 27-year-old had the operation to fix a recurring shoulder problem. Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said:
If you and a friend want to go see the Glasgow Tigers at Ashfield Stadium on August 10th facing off against Newcastle Diamonds answer this simple question:
What nationality is Glasgow Tigers rider Kevin Wolbert?
Send your answer to us on a self addressed postcard marked “Tigers Comp” to:
West of Scotland Media, Suite 2/6 Brook St Studios, 60 Brook St, Glasgow G40 2AB Closing date 8/08/14
His total might have been higher had he not succumbed to a terrifying highspeed get-off in heat 13 while chasing visitors Claus Vissing and Kevin Doolan. Having switched places several times with Vissing in the opening exchanges, Harrison appeared to have finally got the better of the Dane, only to pick up some unwanted drive and career into the safety fence on the fourth bend of the third lap. Thankfully, he walked away from the crash.
AGAINST ALL ODDS Well it’s that time of the week again; I look out the best value bets that are around for you. Last week, we found you a 14/1 winner amongst others. This week, the odds aren’t as high, but there is still some decent value bets around.
That just about summed up Glasgow’s day, as Berwick won 10 of the 15 heats led by the impressive Steen Jensen, who bagged 12 from number three.
Let’s start with the opening week of the English Championship. All the Premier league stature clubs will be out to prove a point from day 1. Opening weekend sees Blackburn take on Cardiff, and Blackburn take on Wolves, I fancy two home wins (Blackburn and Wolves) with btts to score in each game. This is paying a MASSIVE 20/1, odds that are too good to ignore.
Thomsen at least spared the home team further blushes with two wins and a second in his last three heats as he picked up from a slow start.
The 2nd of August we have The Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes. Ed Dunlop’s Amazing Maria is has been in fine fettle recently, apart from a minor blip at the Oaks at Epsom last month, and Goodwood has always been the aim of Ed Dunlop for Amazing Maria, so 10/1 (each way) is tremendous value.
But there looks to be much work ahead if Glasgow want to go to Berwick on Saturday night with hopes for anything better than another defeat. Tigers scorers: Anders Thomsen 11, Theo Pijper 10, Kasper Lykke 6, Rusty Harrison 4, Dimitri Berge 4, Kevin Wolbert 2, Christian Henry 0 (withdrawn).
Ante post prices are available for the Betfred Ebor on the 23rd of August. Peter Niven;s Clever Cookie is my selection for this race. After some decent outings recently, he has only been upped 1lb in the weights, yet is still as long as 10/1, and the step up in trip is bound to suit. Doubles – Blackburn and Wolves to win with BTTS in each match Singles – Amazing Maria 10/1 (each way), Clever Cookie 10/1 (each way)

Watt departs for Belgium. The 20 year old looked to have a bright future ahead of him after scoring a goal that put him in Celtic’s history book, but he failed to progress and his development had stalled at Celtic Park.
“He played a lot of rugby for us last season and he worked hard to become a consistent performer. “His recent surgery will allow him to train fully on his return and play even better next season. We wish him all the best in his recovery period.”

Only gamble with money you can afford to lose
Tony Watt, scorer of that famous winning goal against Barcelona in 2012, has left Celtic to sign for Standard Liege in a deal thought to be worth £1.2 million.
“We’re disappointed for Jon that he’s going to miss the first few weeks of the new season.

After spending last season on loan at Lierse in Belgium, Watt had suitably impressed Standard to give him a five year deal. Questions over the youngsters attitude have plagued him so far in his career, it will be hoped that this fresh start will be enough for him to develop into the player it looked like he would once become. Celtic’s Champions League hopes were left dangling by a thread as they capitulated to a 4-1 defeat away to Legia Warsaw in Poland.
Ronny Deila suffered a nightmare first loss as Celtic boss as his team threw away a superb start and were looking at elimination from Europe’s premier club competition. Callum McGregor had given Celtic a dream start with a fine curling effort to put Celtic in front early on, but Legia marched straight up the pitch to equalise virtually from kick off.
Celtic needed calm and composure to prevent the game getting out of hand, despite good chances for Teemu Pukki and Kris Commons, Legia always looked like getting the next goal which Radovic duly added before the break. At 2-1 the game was very much in the balance and you would think Celtic still favourites to progress, however a moment of slackness from Charlie Mulgrew allowed Legia to break
and Efe Ambrose couldn’t recover in time. The Nigerian defender brought down Kucharczyk and Celtic found themselves behind and down to ten men. The second half saw Pukki withdrawn for Kayal and Celtic retreating to protect what would have been a decent result given the circumstances. Legia blew a golden opportunity when they missed a penalty, but two more goals either side of another penalty miss
gave them a commanding lead to take to Murrayfield. Deila will perhaps look at the game when the sides each had ten men and see hope for the return fixture, but Celtic will need an almighty comeback to progress. Forster made several vital stops to prevent further embarrassment to Deila’s team and the manager must be wondering quite how such a promising start turned into a complete disaster.
Celtic fans will be reminded of Gordon Strachan’s first game in charge when the team were humbled 5-0 in Bratislava by Artmedia. The team fell just short in that return leg, only managing a 4-0 victory, Celtic fans will be hoping the team can summon the type of performance required to turn this fixture around at Murrayfield next Wednesday.
