With the threat of strike action looming over First Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games less than two weeks away, the company have launched legal proceeding forbidding employees from striking.

Trade union Unite have balloted strike action after First Glasgow withdrew their pay increase offer and now members are due to reject a 1.2% percent pay rise and instead strike during the Commonwealth Games. First Glasgow, fearing the repercussions of a strike during the Commonwealth Games have instructed multi-national law firm Eversheds to challenge the unions decision of strike action. Eversheds is one of the world’s largest corporate law firms and currently has 53 offices in 30

countries and prides itself on being innovators in the legal sector. In little over a decade the company has grown to be one of the biggest legal firms in the world and First have asked them to find a loophole to disrupt the planned strike action. If First Glasgow were to succeed in proving the industrial action was legally flawed, Unite would be forced to suspend the strike action and thus ensure that walk outs during the Commonwealth Games would be illegal.

Carbon Footprints nursery and out of school care service and The Glasgow News have teamed up once again to provide the parents of Glasgow with this week’s family fun guide to the school summer holidays. The exciting summer programme offered by the Carbon footprints out of school service, aims to ensure the activities are interesting and varied so that your children will want to join in. Activities include access to a sound lab for DJ lessons, computer graphics, football coaching,

craft workshops and drama sessions. There are also activities based on caring for animals with the opportunity to hold mini beasts and a visit from the Dog’s Trust. This is further complimented by outings to the beach, local parks, sea life centre and ten pin bowling. With such a varied and exciting

programme every young person will be able to enjoy their summer holiday regardless of the weather. The affordable all inclusive price is sure to keep parent’s happy too. With one week down and only six to go, thus far the weather has been kind to us, meaning lots of time for family fun in the sun.

John Bishop continues his Aussie cycling trek, stopping off to try his hand at surfing and cattle herding.

t’s a battle that’s fought fiercely, and one that will dominate the front pages of everyone’s newspaper in the morning.Who’s it between? Well, not the teams featuring in the World Cup final, but rather BBC v ITV. Both channels will be broadcasting The World Cup Final (Match of the Day Live, Sunday, BBC One, 7pm, FIFA World Cup Live 2014, ITV, 7pm) which takes place at the famous Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro and kicks off at 8pm, but which company will come out on top in the ratings? The smart money is on the Beeb. After all, they have silver fox Gary Lineker at the helm, whose still boyish good looks, despite the fact he’s in his fifties, will appeal to the

non-football-loving ladies in the audience, while fans will simply enjoy his knowledge of the game. The BBC also have some excellent pundits alongside him, and we’re hoping that Danny Murphy rather than Mark Lawrenson gets the cocommentator’s spot. The former Liverpool and Fulham star has been a revelation in this position – he’s as interesting as poor old Phil Neville was dull during his first go at it during England’s opening tie against Italy. Not that ITV are the poor relations.Adrian Chiles does a decent job as their anchorman, while the likes of Gordon Strachan, Patrick Viera and Lee Dixon have plenty to say for themselves. Sadly, Fabio Cannavaro often looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights –

he’s charming, but perhaps needs a few more English lessons. Also, it would be nice if his co-stars allowed him to get a word in edgeways every now and then. The World Cup itself has been one of the best in recent memory. From the start, teams generally threw caution to the wind, opting to attack rather than sit back and defend, which led to some thrillingly open games.Teams such as Chile, Costa Rica and Algeria surprised many by getting further than anyone thought possible, while the likes of Italy, holders Spain and, yes, England, fell by the wayside

early. Even the USA, a nation that for so long didn’t seem to be able to get its head around the game they call soccer, finally appeared to embrace it, and the team only bowed out during the round of 16 after one of the most enthralling matches so far, which saw goalkeeper Tim Howard make a record-breaking 15 saves before Belgium beat them 2-1.After watching so many great matches, we have high hopes for this year’s final. It surely can’t be dirtier and more disappointing than the 2010 one anyway, when Spain scored in extra time to win 1-0 against a Netherlands team that was uncharacteristically dirty throughout the game.

He’s a drugs counsellor by trade who enlists the help of a former addict under his care to carry out a carjacking – all in a lastditch attempt to get his hands on some cash. But why is he so willing to risk all in his bid for riches? The pieces start to fall together when he starts coughing up blood, and it seems that he’s been keeping a dark secret from everyone, including his wife.

www.glasgow-news.com Continued from front page A source connected with the trade union spoke furiously in regards to First Glasgow’s decision to press ahead with the legal challenge he said. “You have to question how much money First are paying this law firm to break with this strike ballot. “It’s sad that a workplace with a history of co-operation to deliver decent bus services for the people of Glasgow are being attacked by their employer for seeking a modest pay increase after years of real-term cuts.” Buses and Subway travel are expecting to carry an extra 250,000 people a day in Glasgow, and with the transport service expected to be put under more pressure, engineers at First Group believed that they would be rewarded with a pay-rise.

Regional industrial officer Eddie Duffy said in June: “Unfortunately we’ve been brought to this point by an absolute failure of management at FirstGroup and SPT to properly consult with and recognise the value of their employees.” This threat of strike action comes less than a week after First announced that they had invested £20 million in 109 new buses to carry spectators and athletes at the Commonwealth Games. There will be a total of 380 buses used to transport athletes, officials, media and spectators to and from the events. The unnamed source connected with the union said “It would seem that First- content to showcase their investment in new buses and executive bonuses- would rather suppress their workers than engage with them.

“Ban the Orange Walks” after youngster hit with bottle

The family of the 12-year-old girl who was struck by a glass bottle near the Orange Walk on Saturday has called for the marches to be banned.

Kellsie Lynch was covered in blood after she was hit with the bottle after a fight broke out near where she was standing. She was taken to Yorkhill hospital in Glasgow where she was treated for wounds on her face. Her family have called for an end to the marches. Kellsie’s Grandad said: “I think the marches should be stopped, they should be banned. My granddaughter is in a terrible state. It’s time for this stuff to end.” Around 4,500 marchers and 4,000 spectators took part in the event. There were eighteen people were arrested. MP Jim Murphy has recently said that he thinks the Orange march that is planned in the run-up to the Independence Referendum should be cancelled. The East Renfrewshire Labour MP said: “I am disgusted. The march before the referendum vote shouldn’t go ahead.

First Glasgow Launches Ticket Desk in Buchanan Galleries

First Glasgow customers will soon be able to buy bus tickets as they shop, as a new ticket hub officially opened last Friday in Buchanan Galleries. The travel information and ticket desk is opening just in time for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games kicking off on 23 July and will act as the main information hub for those looking for details and information on bus travel during the Games. Hero dog walker foils attempted rapist A hero dog walker inadvertently came to the rescue of a woman who was moments away from being raped.

Abdull Oun was jogging around Kelvingrove Park with his new puppy when he heard the screams of a woman in trouble, immediately running toward the screams he saw a woman being pinned down by the fiend and launched himself at the attacker, connecting with a flying kick. The would be rapist was knocked unconscious while Oun helped the woman into a taxi and offered her his jacket. The woman, who withheld her name, said that Abdull Oun was her “hero, a gentleman and her saviour.” She continued “Its like he woke me up from a very bad dream. Energy efficient buildings could save £12 billion a year Households in Britain could be set to reap the financial rewards that having an energy efficient home can bring. Recent reports published said that sustainable energy in the home could be worth £189 pounds per person, and collectively the economy would be £12.1bn pounds better off per year. With the Government subsidizing home and cavity wall insulation, people are already saving hundreds of pounds a year, and with loft insulation being effective for at least forty years, people will be saving year after year. The manifesto of the Sustainable Energy Association has also called for more to be done in the way of creating greener houses, and lowering societies carbon footprint. The manifesto speaks about “treating buildings as part of the energy system, and by using smart

technology it will be possible to increase the savings whilst reducing waste and dependence on fossil fuels.” David Sowden, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Association said “We have known for a long time that energy measures in buildings are cheaper in the long run. Now the Government’s own tools and assumptions yield the same answer. With the subsidization of the insulation policy, someone living in a flat can look forward to saving upwards of £150 per year, and for someone living in a detached house, as much as £460 per year. As much as a third of the heat from your home is lost through lack of insulation in the roof, and with the loft installation taking only a few hours, its can be done in an afternoon, and the householder can start saving money immediately.

Commonwealth Games athletes An ‘oinking will be tracked by Government great time for kids!

Athletes appearing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will be tracked by the UK Government to ensure that none of the athletes abscond from their team base and attempt to live in the country. There have been growing concerns that visiting athletes from Commonwealth countries, could disappear once they have taken part in the Games, following similar instances at London’s Olympics in 2012. London’s Olympics saw several athletes disappear and several more claim asylum from their home countries.

Home Office Minster Karen Bradley said “arrangements were in place to ensure those with clearance for the games leave within the permitted time limits.” As many as 21 athletes and delegates went missing or claimed asylum after the London Olympics and officials are determined to make sure that the athletes participating for their various countries are under no illusions the length of time they are allowed to stay in the country. At the previous Commonwealth Games in Australia, there were apparent disappearances from athletes from countries such as Africa and Asia, ministers in the UK Government are determined to make sure this

doesn’t happen at the Glasgow event. 71 countries will take part in this years Commonwealth Games and each participant and “Games family member” have undergone comprehensive record checks to minimise attempts to abuse our hospitality” Ms Bradley said. The British Government has said that “the rigorous accreditation process that contributed to the success of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 has also been central to our preparations for Glasgow 2014.” The Commonwealth Games begins on the 23rd of July until August 3rd and will feature 17 sports with 6500 competitors taking part throughout the 11 days of competition.

First Glasgow has teamed up with the King’s Theatre to give First customers the opportunity to meet popular Milkshake and Nick Jr character Peppa Pig. Children will get the chance to travel free of charge over the weekend of 12-13 July. Peppa Pig brings her famous fun and giggles to the King’s Theatre on 12-13 July in her new show ‘Peppa Pig’s Big Splash’. Glasgow’s biggest bus operator, First, is giving away six family tickets (worth £58) to see Peppa Pig live on stage at the King’s. And after the 10am show on Sunday 13 July the lucky winners and their families will meet Peppa. The initiative is part of First Glasgow’s package of 1st birthday celebrations for its colourful cartoon characters - The Busy Bodies – which were introduced in July 2013 to give bus customers information in a fun, friendly way. And in further celebration of the Busy Bodies’ 1st birthday all of First’s little passengers

can travel free of charge on First Glasgow services on 12-13 July, when accompanied by a full-fare paying adult. First’s marketing manager Elaine Magee said: ‘Everyone’s favourite cheeky little piggies are coming to Glasgow and we’re delighted to be giving some of our customers the opportunity to meet Peppa Pig’. “We’re expecting a fantastic response to this promotion and we’ll be delighted to see more families get out and about for family fun days by bus.’ To enter this great competition all you have to do is send First Glasgow or the King’s Theatre a drawing showing what the Peppa fan in your life, loves about Peppa pig! You can upload these to the King’s Theatre facebook page www.facebook.com/ kingsandtheatreroyalglasgow or First Glasgow’s twitter account: @ FirstinGlasgow.

The state already has the ability to intervene if a child is not being properly cared for in the family and sadly we have all seen cases where the state should have intervened and did not as well as cases where the state intervened mistakenly.

Some committed Christians believe it is a positive step in increasing protection of vulnerable youngsters. However, other equally committed Christians do have concerns. “This plan to have a Named Person is part of The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill and will see a named official, such as a health worker or head teacher, available to help with a child’s welfare and liaise with their families. Date set for debate

A date for a live television debate between Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling has been set. There has been a dispute over dates, but it has now been confirmed by STV that it is to take place on 5 August.

Better Together have allegedly said to be annoyed by this, claiming that STV surrendered to the first minister’s demands by initially refused to take part.

The twohour debate, which takes place in less than a month away, will be at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow. It will be in front of an audience of 350 members of the public. It will be hosted by the broadcaster’s political editor Bernard Ponsonby.

However,

A spokesman for Mr Salmond said:

STV had originally set the date for 16 July, but it has been reported that it was cancelled because First Minister Alex Salmond requested for David Cameron to be his opponent. When Salmond was offered the later date, he agreed to face former Labour chancellor Alistair Darling instead.

discussions and have finalised the debate deal.

“We accepted this invitation weeks ago and are delighted that Alistair Darling has finally done likewise and accepted the challenge of debating with the first minister on live TV, in front of a large audience of voters.

Our aim is to offer those in and around Glasgow a more caring and personal service. We realise options may vary in style and cost, but support and guidance in making those decisions is what we do best. We endeavour to keep costs affordable to all, yet maintaining an extremely dignified and highly professional service for you and your loved ones.

A spokesman for Better Together said: “We are delighted that there will be a live, televised debate between the leaders of both campaigns. “Alex Salmond will now finally have to answer questions on the pound, pensions and public services that he

has spent the last two years dodging.” The referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country will take place on 18 September. Residents of Scotland will be able to take part in the vote, answering the “yes/no” question: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” The televised debate will be informative for people who are undecided on what to vote, as both sides can get their points across. It will be an opportunity for the Yes campaign to convert the tens of thousands of extra Scots they need to win the election. For the Better Together campaign, there is the chance portray their opinion on benefits of Scotland staying in the Union. By

“The houses are obliterated,” Mr Bargabos said. “There is not a piece of framework together.”

Killed in the weather event were Kimberly Hillard, 35, and her 4-yearold daughter, Paris Newman; Virginia Warner, 70; and Arnie Allen, 53, whose home was lifted from its foundation, Riley said.

He added one of the house was “picked up and moved probably 500 feet across the road into another house”.

He added that investigators have been searching for others in the rubble. Town Supervisor Rich Bargabos told the Syracuse Post Standard a mother and her four-month-old baby, a relative of the family and an unrelated neighbour had been killed.

Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena has said that due to the Snowden being unable to return to the US because of fear of prosecution he has requested extended asylum. With his current Visa due to expire on the 31st of July Snowden will seek further protection to stay in Russia, although it has not been confirmed whether he wants to stay in Russia permanently or whether he aims to become a fully fledged Russian citizen. Snowden hit the headlines last year

after whistleblowing the US and NSA’s surveillance programme, as well as reporting that the US Government had intercepted calls from high ranking individuals in the German Government. The whistleblower has received both praise and criticism for his role in leaking information on the mass surveillance programme orchestrated by the US Government. For instance as well as being awarded the title of Rector of Glasgow University, he faces 30 years incarceration in America after being accused of violating the Espionage Act. Snowden has said in past interviews that if possible he would eventually like to return home to America.

Gaza attacks in Israel to intensify

The Prime Minister of Israel Benjamain Netanyahu has reportedly said to intensify attacks on Hamas. He has said that Palestinian militants would “pay a heavy price” for the attacks on Israel. Israel’s military have revealed that Hamas had fired 72 rockets at Israeli cities on Wednesday, after dozens of air strikes were carried out in Gaza. It is reported that around 40 Palestinians have died in the recent hostilities. The officials say half of the casualties were civilians, a number of them women and children. Hamas has warned that all Israelis are now targets. Mark Regev, spokesman for Mr Netanyahu said the Israeli army was

acting to “dismantle Hamas’s military machine”.

He said: “We don’t want to have some sort of band-aid solution whereby we have a quick fix, a ceasefire and then we only have rockets on Israeli citizens next week.” The head of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights in Gaza, Raji Sourani, accused Israel of deliberately targeting civilians.

He said “There is no safe haven in this place and Palestinian civilians are once again in the eye of the storm and are paying heavily. Israelis are trying to pressure militant groups through targeting civilians.” By

Emergency spy law set to be passed The government in a rare cross party agreement has agreed to draft emergency laws allowing security services continued access to members of the public’s phone and internet records without warrants. The move came after the European Court of Justice judged the powers given to the security services under a previous EU directive to be illegal.

The now stricken directive, required phone and internet service providers to maintain records for a 12 month period detailing who and when their customers made calls and texts and also log their internet activity. In response to the EU Court’s ruling, the government and the opposition have set in motion the drafting of a set of emergency laws which will continue to compel ISP’s and telecom providers to maintain records as was previously the case and allow security

services to continue to monitor such data without first obtaining a warrant.

Electronic device checks being Wrong implemented on UK flights prisoner In line with new checks implemented by the US last week, passengers travelling on flights from the UK are going being advised to ensure that electronic devices they are taking on board in their carry on luggage must be charged and able to power on the condition that if the device is not able to be switched on they will not be able to take it onto the aircraft.

The government has not specified which flights will be affected by the new regulations for security reasons. The change in security regulations in the US, was brought about after American officials announced that there was a ‘credible’ threat to flights to the US but released no further information. Security analysts have theorized that

the changes may be in response to new intelligence on Islamic militants in Syria and Yemen, indicating that terrorist groups in those regions have been developing new bombs based on mobile technology. Alongside the checks on electronic devices, passengers may be subject to further searches and screening as part of the new measures. Currently the UK, France and Germany have all agreed to comply with the US government’s guidelines on electronic devices due to the heightened security threats. It is so far unclear how many airports in the UK will be affected and which flights will be subject to the new regulations or how their implementation will affect transit times through security. By

claiming the Government, failed to mention the change in the limit to qualify for the extra benefit. (50 metres to 20 metres walking distance)

Welfare reforms led by Iain Duncan Smith will result in some of the most vulnerable people in society being actively persecuted because of their disability and their need for state funded assistance.

There have also been slight changes to the demographic of people qualifying to receive the benefit, previously, as has been the same for 35 years, if a claimant can not walk unaided for fifty metres they are entitled to the mobility benefit, which can be as much as £56.75 extra per week. The change in the rule for the new PIP allowance means that if you can walk unaided for 20 metres you do not qualify for the extra benefit. It is estimated that 80,000 working age disabled people in Scotland will lose either some or all of the extra mobility allowance as a direct result of the changes. The Disability Benefits Consortium (DBC) is determined to halt the Government’s crusade against the vulnerable. The DBC are made up of a national coalition of more than 50 charities and organisations, and they are committed to working towards a fair benefit system. The Disability Benefits Consortium have taken the Government to court,

Margaret Hodge, chair of the group, said the introduction of the flagship welfare reform has been “nothing short of a fiasco”. Hodge also said “due to the assessments taking longer than thought, there was significant delays, a backlog of claims and unnecessary distress for claimants, who have been unable to access the support they need to live, and in some cases work independently.” It has also been claimed that terminally ill people are having to wait on average 28 days for a decision 180% percent longer than expected. The DBC has said that the Government has failed to justify the decision to change the acceptable walking distance and the money the afflicted rely on is an absolute lifeline, many use it for a Motability vehicle to remain independent. £460,000 improvements for flats

Glasgow Science Centre Tower to reopen this month The Glasgow Science Centre Tower is to reopen on 19th July after being closed for almost 4 years. The tower, which is 127m, is the only structure in the world that can rotate 360 degrees. The £1.8million refurbishment includes new glass fronted elevators and some new features including an interactive visitor experience area and new technology in the viewing cabin. Visitors will be able to see out over 20 miles across Glasgow and beyond, providing it is a clear day. There will also be iPads available with GAR (Geolocated Augmented Reality) technology to explore a virtual panoramic view.

HOME FRONT: Housing convener Danny Devlin, left, and council leader Jim Fletcher outside the improved flats in Inglestone Avenue

Nearly 80 flats have benefited from major improvement works totalling almost half a million pounds. Homes in four streets in Thornliebank and Woodfarm have been upgraded by East Renfrewshire Council.

A total of 78 flats in Crum Avenue, Inglestone Avenue and Woodfarm Road in Thornliebank and Hutcheson Road in Woodfarm have benefited. The work – which cost £460,300 – was completed a week ahead of schedule.

The exterior of the properties has been replaced and external wall insulation has been put in.

Council contractors also carried out some landscaping on the completion of the work.

The work has substantially improved the look of the buildings.

The blocks are a mixture of council tenants and owner occupiers. The work was carried out at no cost to any of the 78 householders.

And residents will also save a considerable amount on their heating bills as a result.

Convener for housing, Councillor

Danny Devlin said: “This has made a massive difference to the look of these flats – it’s been done to a very high standard and the properties now look terrific. “Residents will also notice a big difference to their fuel bills come winter - the insulation will have the double bonus of saving people money and making homes warmer. “I’m delighted this investment has been made and I’m sure residents are too.” Funding for the programme also came from the Scottish Government and other providers.

Dr Stephen Breslin, Chief Executive of the Glasgow Science Centre, said: “We are excited to return Glasgow Tower back to the city this summer. It is an iconic landmark along the River Clyde and a worldclass feat of engineering. “We have been working on bringing the Tower back into operation for some time now and we are pleased that it will be open for visitors from both at home and abroad to enjoy this summer. “There has been a significant investment in the refurbishments and the visitor experience to ensure Glasgow Tower is a must-visit location for Glaswegians, Scots and international visitors alike.” The tower will remain open for summer until 2nd of November and will cost £4.95 per person. Tickets can be booked at the Science Centre or call 0141 420 5000. For for more information fo to www.glasgowsciencecentre.org/ By

GARL back on track

happening? Is this dude so daft that he has no sense of personal space?’ Well I couldn’t no say anything coulda? So I turned round and wiz like ‘Mate, dae ye mind? Any closer and ye’ll be in me!’ The guy just looked in disbelief and sheer embarrassment and finally withdrew from my personal bubble.

Glasgow citizens have reason to celebrate as one of Glasgow’s most ambitious transport projects, looks to be back on track. It has been announced that the Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL) will be granted the financial backing needed to complete the delayed railway link. Initially the GARL, aimed to connect Glasgow Central and Glasgow Airport, making the journey more efficient for passengers. The plan was shuttle passengers between the train station and airport but was cut because of spiralling costs. Its thanks to the CityDeal package offered by the government in Westminster. City Deal is an agreement between Government and a local council on how best to ensure that an area’s economy and growth continues to prosper. The idea is also to work together to limit the percentage of chance that the economy will shrink or jobs lost. The City Deal, has been rolled out in several other cities across Britain but so far only Glasgow has taken up the offer of financial aid in Scotland. On the gov.uk website the explanation for City Deal allows local councils’ the ability to take charge and responsibility for decisions that affect their area, it also allows the decision of how public money should be spent.

City Deal is eventually expected to generate around £1.75 billion pounds in economic growth for the Glasgow area. It has been estimated that with the reignition of the Glasgow Airport Rail Link, as much as 28,000 jobs would be created, the project would also see heavy investment in roads, bus services and employment programmes stimulating the local economy as well. Gordon Matheson said of the promising deal offered by the British Government. “This is the start of an era of transformation in the Glasgow city region. This truly historic city deal is the biggest in the U.K and the first in Scotland, “City regions really are the engines of national economic growth and I have long argued that devolving more power to our cities is the best way to grow the Scottish and British economies.” Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool have all been awarded City Deal status and according to Prime Minister David Cameron, the City Deal policy, will only help Glasgow to become more prosperous he said “Glasgow is one of the United Kingdom’s greatest cities and like Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds it not only has a proud history, but also a fantastic future.” Cameron also extended an olive branch to the Scottish Government asking them to build on Westminster’s significant financial contribution.

ALRIGHT MADSKULLS it’s me agin the original kitchen nightmare incarnate, mad chef having my usual winge about all things kitchen and Glasgow. So it’s been a pretty interesting week as usual for me, from the birth of the Mad Dog slush puppy, to kitchen nightmares in their worst degree and generally moaning about the things that do our nuts right in.

DOES MA NUT IN... Everyone has stuff that gets right on yer nerves and this is my latest. This is one of my biggest pet peeves, SPACE INVADERS. Last week I was in a supermarket cue at lunch time, so there were quite a few bodies about and obviously I was tryin tae skive from work. So I opted out of the self service checkouts, since I’ve had a few issues previously that nearly resulted in me chuckin ma messages to the ground and running away in a huff. So I thought yeah let’s do it old skool stand in a cue, and get served by a real human being, oh how I ended up regretting that! The cue was about 12 deep ranging from office workers to tramps and this guy behind me kept getting closer and closer, ah swear tae god I could feel him breathing on my neck. Every time I moved forward to escape the breath of death this guy kept moving forward, inside I was aboot to lose it. The anger was building and building, ah mean what are ye at mate? Are ye trying to mount ma leg? I’m only in for some square sausage. Fur ma overdue breakfast! In ma heid I’m saying ‘seriously is this really

So it gave me an idea of making something different, but, as usual it’s gotta have a bit of nostalgia attached to it. So here’s how it went down: Last week I was absolutely burnt oot, I mean i’d been doing double shifts all week and although it’s a labour of love, this week in particular I seriously felt like an escaped mental patient to ready to find a cardboard box tae hide in. My eyes were like their usual burnt oval pie lids more suited to a Fre Bentos pie demonstration and I felt exhausted from the inside out. I headed home from work to have a bit of recharge and just a wee hour to claw back what sanity was left in my brain. Well let me tell ye, I had the sleep of my life, but as usual I started dreaming about food and ice cream, in particular old faithful mad dog 20/20 the ultimate anti-social behaviour tipple. In the dream, I was chuggin’ on a slush puppy that tasted of sherbet dib dab that had a kick an adolescent schoolboy would go mad for, suddenly I woke up and had my eureka moment! I knew what it meant, I’m gonna make sherbet infused Mad Dog 20/20 now that’s a piece of nostalgia. I always remember getting chased by the polis wae ma bottle of md20/20 in hand feeling so smashed that my ma maw would seriously give me a few well earned skelps tae the heid when she smelt it on ma breath. So anyways you know what I’m like for ranting, the creation of the week this week is the ol faithful MD 20/20 sherbet infused madness. Now that’s Glasgow through and through but as usual you’ll have to wait till next week to find out how it turned out as I’ll need to drink a few bottles to get that flavour just right.

This is mad chef signing off until next week so stay hungry stay sharp and remember life’s to short tae no get right in aboot it!

Active Champions are out volunteering and giving their free time to deliver and support weekly activity sessions and annual events across 32 Partner Organisations in the North East. The staff team at Active East put every volunteer forward to win Games tickets due to their tremendous achievements. Active East is using the Games as a catalyst to get more young people active and build skills through volunteering and partnership working to ensure that local organisations have the capacity to sustain the impact of the programme long term. The programme consists of two strands: a young volunteer strand called Active Champions which is a bespoke programme tailored to their individual interests in sport and

physical activity, this may be anything from delivery and coaching to promotion, and a Small Grants strand which provides partner organisations access to funding for new physical activity provision and training. The excitement is building round the Games and the Active Champions are ensuring this is felt by the whole community. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in the celebrations in these upcoming weeks with Festival 2014 Live Sites: Glasgow Green, Kelvin Grove Bandstand and Merchant City and Wee Sport Zones at Easterhouse and Springburn Sports Centre. Partners of Active East will be delivering a fun sports day during Games time on Friday 25th July at Helenslea Park which is funded through the ASDA Communities and Sports Leaders UK

partnership. Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn, said: “Active East is one the many fantastic projects across Scotland contributing

to the 2014 Games legacy, thanks to National Lottery funding. I am delighted that some of its young people will be attending the Games and the closing ceremony thanks to the Legacy ticket initiative from the

Scottish Government. These young people are part of the Games legacy and now have the chance to acquire memories of this special event which should last a lifetime.”

La Bella of the ball...

When I found out that Samantha Faiers was visiting Glasgow to launch her new fragrance, “La Bella” at The Fragrance Shop in Buchanan Galleries, I couldn’t contain my excitement. As a big TOWIE fan, and Samantha fan in general, I was delighted to have a chat with Sam about her fragrance. Sam was bubbly and friendly like she appears on screen, as I asked her about her perfume, what her inspiration was when creating the fragrance, and she explained to me she was very ‘hands-on’ and created a scent she loved. Samantha said: “In terms of scent I didn’t look at anything else for inspiration, I love caramel and vanilla scents.”The perfume has vanilla top notes with caramel in the base notes. When it came to the packaging Sam looked to her favourite bottles for ideas, “For the bottle I took inspiration from my favorite perfumes like Chanel, Jo Malone, and Elie Saab. For example, with the label on the front, but then I put my own stamp on it.” When it came to choosing the name, Samantha took her time

and wanted it to be personal to her. She said: “I took a day or two to think about it because I wanted to put my story behind it. La Bella means ‘the beautiful’ in Spanish. I used to live over there, and my grandparents still live there, it’s kind of like a home from home for me.”

£25

The Only Way is Essex star shared her top tips for making her fragrance last throughout the day, “When I’m putting

perfume on I spray it at the back of my neck and behind my ears. Some people spray it over their clothes but personally I think it can make it smell quite stale, so I just spray it on my wrists and behind my ears.” The TV star said she has been to Glasgow before, however she is never here long enough as she would like to. She said: “This isn’t my first time, I have been to Glasgow before. Unfortunately it’s only been short trips, but when I’ve been driving around the city I love the buildings and I love the culture.” Ms Faiers has been overwhelmed with the success of the perfume and thanks her fans for that. She exclaimed: “Thank you so much for supporting me! I just found out last week that La Bella is now the number one celebrity fragrance at The Fragrance Shop! So I would just like to say thank you so much, it means a lot!” By

Kaitlin McManus

La Bella By Samantha is £25.00, 100mls and is available at The Fragrance Shop.

The Big Fake Tan Guide: Part 1 Summer has arrived, but with summer in Glasgow, you are never guaranteed a lot of sun. With the latest fake tans on the market, more people are hitting the bottle (of tan!) rather than risk the dangers of the sun. If you are anything like me, with Scottish celtic skin, fake tan is the only way for many Scottish lassies to get a bit of colour. Best Mousse Tan Vita Liberata PHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse, vitaliberata.com

£37.50

When I heard about this tan that claims to last 2-3 weeks I was intrigued. Claiming to last 4 times more than any other fake tan, it seemed too good to be true. I found that it doesn’t last over a fortnight without more applications – like any other fake tan would. However, the instructions do state that it does depend on the Ph levels of your skin, so maybe it will last longer on others. Also, it does fade evenly and produces an amazing colour, which makes up for it. It is pricey, therefore I would keep it for going out rather than everyday use. It goes on easily and goes far so you don’t use much per application which makes it last. It was also revealed last week that this is loved by Kim Kardashian, and if it’s good enough for Kim K, it’s good enough for me!

Best Face Tan Origins Faux Glow™ Radiant self tanner for face Origins

£18.50

Speaking from experience, I know how difficult it can be to find a good fake tan, one that doesn’t streak, turn orange or smell like biscuits. So, for the benefit of my lovely readers, I have tried and tested numerous fake tans on the market, to find the best out there. Welcome to Part One of our fake tan guide, happy bronzing! In my opinion, there is nothing worse in summer than having to wear heavy make-up. This is wear fake tan for the face comes in. Fake tan can give your face a healthy glow without needing to slap on foundation. Origins Faux Glow definitely gave me just that. I applied it to a clean face before going to bed and I was lightly bronzed when I woke up. It goes on like a gel and with peppermint and rosemary oils it soothes the skin. I love it and I can tell it will be a staple item I’ll be using all summer.

Best Instant Tan –Solait Instant Bronzing Foam, Superdrug

£6.99

It had been a few years since I had used Superdrug’s Solait fake tan. It was my favourite when I was beginning to use fake tan. As I was putting it on I wondered why I ever stopped. I tried the Solait Gel, spray and mousse, which was my favourite. The Instant Bronzing Foam turned my legs a gorgeous deep, bronze shade. It was really easy to put on on as well, and a small amount went a long way. Overall, I am really pleased with the tan and at the price it is affordable enough to wear on a daily basis and as it washes off it won’t build up and go patchy when you keep applying it.

The Smart Girls Guide to... Applying Fake Tan Whether you are a beginner or if you have been using fake tan for years, it can be a very tricky thing to get right. Avoid fake tan disaster by following our guide to applying fake tan like a pro. The upside is you’ll have a gorgeous tan, the downside? Everyone will ask you where you have been on holiday... 1. Always use a mitt. Okay, so we like chocolate oranges and Orange is the New Black, but orange palms, not so much. Not only will it protect your hands, but wearing a mitt will ensure an even finish and will make the tan spread easily. 2. Prep, prep, prep! Preparation is the key for an even tan. Exfoliate the body to remove skin cells and moisturise after your shower. An oil-free moisturiser, like Cocoa Brown Chocolate Whip(£5.99, Superdrug) is ideal as oil can act as a barrier which prevents the tanning agents from developing properly. 3. When it comes to hands and feet use what is left on the mitt or if you need to just use a tiny amount. After tanning them, rub a little moisturiser in between fingers and toes to blend. Rubbing moisturiser on the wrists will prevent streaks. 4.The best time to tan your face is when you are about to go to bed and after you have brushed your teeth. A handy hint is to rub an ice cube over your face, this will close pores and stop fake tan clogging them up. 5. After applying fake tan, wipe your nails with a cleansing wipe to prevent staining, or apply nail varnish to protect them.

Summer Beauty Must-Haves! By

Kaitlin McManus

Whether you are lucky enough to be going away, or you have decided to stay in Scotland for the buzz of the Commonwealth Games, it’s time to get your summer make up sorted! We have put together a few items that will ensure you are looking downright gorgeous this summer! This mascara is possibly my favourite i’ve found so far. A pet hate of mine is clumpy mascara and this left my lashes clumpfree. It’s perfect for summer as it separated my lashes and provides either a natural look or layered for night time glamour.

Boots This moisturising lip gloss is made with Lanolin, which is a natural substance taken from freshly shorn sheep’s wool. It sounds weird but it’s super moisturising and contains SPF15.

PulseGel PulseGel PulseGel If any of the readers are like me and regularly go to the gym, you will know that sometimes you go through a stage of lethargy. By

Gregg Kelly

You know, when your head is telling you to go and pump some iron or strengthen your cardiovascular system with some high intensity running, and all you want to do is eat cakes and watch a boxset of The Wire. We all need that little push sometimes. That’s where PulseGel from from MyProtein.com comes in, made specifically to increase your energy levels before beginning a workout. Make no mistakes about it, PulseGel is rocket fuel for fitness enthusiasts, from the moment you walk into the gym, and target your workout, you will have the most efficient workout

of your life. I certainly have and continue to do so each time I use the gel.

However, be aware, you should only use one sachet of PulseGel a day, it has a whopping 221mg of caffeine in it. Perfect to give you that energy boost you need in the gym. Especially after a long slog at work or to give you that drive to get up in the morning and hit the gym before work. N.B (Probably not the best to take it before driving your granny to bingo) Flavour wise they’re quite pleasant, no worse than the taste of berry sours, and miles better tasting

than Relentless or Monster. Easily digestible, quick to get to work, and you can immediately notice the difference, your gym life will never be the same. Personally I would highly recommend PulseGel £12.99 for 12, it works out at just over a pound for one (cheaper than a bottle of Lucozade) and far more beneficial to your workout.

I repeat though do not take more than one in a day and do not use if you are sensitive to caffeine, your gym instructor does not want to spend his afternoon peeling you off the ceiling.

Dream Interpretation

Spells

Analysis

Let me explain that a spell is an intention set with the purest heart for the greatest good, nothing more nothing less. It ‘s simple, set your heart and intention on your wish, expect it to happen and be grateful for the joy it beings - that’s what a spell is. Anyone who sets out to cause harm or ill intent will receive that back ten fold so, in my book its an absolute NO go area.

Attract a soul mate - The Tarot

To attract that holiday love and romance into your life the tarot can be a powerful tool to draw close a new potential partner. From a deck of Tarot cards take the Knight of cups, the two of Cups and the Star and place then all in a row next to each other on a pink cloth and then around the cloth place 6 small red candles. The knight of cups is the element of water and emotion and brings forward love and proposals – the two of cups creates a loving union and the star seals it with hope for the future.

and space to yourself where you won’t be disturbed then, start to write a note of all the qualities you want the person your attracting to have along with things like, their looks and characteristics etc.

Then thread together the note and your picture – this binds you to your desire in pure love, which is symbolised by the white thread.

Place this into a small bucket of sand and on top of this put your rose quartz stone; if possible leave it near running water.

The cards are laid out on a pink cloth are to enhance love and the 6 candles represent the number of decision and red for passion.

This spell is best done on the night of the full moon and once you have done all of this sit back and send out your request to the universe saying; I call upon the forces of the Arcana and the universe to help me find my true love – the person who will be right for me and who will love me for who I am.

You will need a rose quartz crystal, some white thread, a needle, a picture of you and some notepaper and a pen. First of all create some quiet time

To add magic, zest and passion to a relationship get yourself a piece of ginseng, a picture of the goddess of Love Aphrodite and some musk incense. In front of the picture place your piece of Ginseng, which is to enhances the sexual and sensual elements and lit the musk incense.

Summer is a magical time when people and things come alive; we have a spring in our step and look forward to new and exciting things ahead.

From the 8th of July to the 4th of August in Celtic Astrology the Holy rules and is holds a position of nobility as well as having powerful leadership quality and so, if you find yourself in need of something to assist you in overcoming an emotional issues then look no further.

Ask the love Goddess Aphrodite to help create the passion and sensuality that you crave in your newfound relationship and wait for the spell to kick in - be ready for the embers of love to be ignited.

Binding The love knot

Find yourself three pieces of think thread, Red for Passion, Pink for Love and Green to bond your hearts together.

Braid the three threads into a bracelet and while doing so imagine that you are attracting to you the perfect partner who will bring with them all the qualities you have been hoping for in a soul mate. Once the bracelet is made place it on your right wrist, as it is closest to your heart – do this especially on the night of the full moon and allow the spell to work its magic.

Find yourself a holly leaf and place it into a muslin bag along with a small note asking for help in resolving the issue you face. Then go to your favourite place by the water and throw the bag into the water allowing it to be carried away knowing that the universe will assist you in cleansing and clearing your unwanted issues.

Your dreams are a river of wisdom; they flow from your subconscious mind carrying images, colours and feelings in the stream. By interpreting the symbols in your dreams we can uncover information about you; we can discover what really motivates you; and we can identify the fears that hold you back. Your dreams are as unique as you are; think of them as coded messages sent by your subconscious mind to be received, noted and interpreted by your conscious mind. Often, what is revealed in the code of your dreams can be helpful, inspiring and uplifting. Since your dreams are special to you, you are the best interpreter of your subconscious codes. Although I can offer you a springboard of ideas as to the meaning of your dream, the best interpretation is always reached by going within and asking ‘what does this symbol mean to me?’

Sample Dream

Simply leave it there until you attract the partner of your dreams.

Then leave the rest to the universal energies.

Fated Attraction – Rose Quartz Crystal

Seduction – Aphrodite Goddess of Love

The sand represents yo ur holiday but also the grounding of the relationship, the water is the fresh emotional energy providing plenty a clean start.

Overcoming emotional issues – the Holly leaf

there’s no way for me to get it. I start feeling really panicky and stressed because I’m lost without my kit. I wake up with feelings of sadness and disappointment because I’m dreaming something disturbing about a time in my life that was actually really happy. Can you interpret this dream for me?

I have a recurring dream that I am at sea on a ship I used to work on; but the ship is different and I can’t find my way around. I open doors and walk around but I just can’t get my bearings. I then realize that I am supposed to start work and I am unprepared. I have forgotten my uniform and kit and

There are three significant elements to this dream that require interpretation: Being at sea, feeling lost in a maze, and feeling unprepared. Feeling unprepared and lost are common dream experiences for someone who finds it difficult to relinquish control. If you feel you must solve, help, do, repair, fix, and control in life, the anxiety that comes along with the need to control is expressed in your dream as the opposite of control: helplessness. In this case, you are helpless in that you are lost and unprepared with no way to get back in control. Dreaming of being at sea is about your emotional state, particularly in relation to family. You are a person who cares deeply about their family, which can sometimes lead to feelings of anxiety and pressure to do the right thing without making a mistake, but of course, that is an unachievable standard to hold yourself up to. Being as caring and loving as your dream denotes is enough, you do not have to be in control to show you care. This dream suggests the person may experience feelings of tension, frustration and anxiety in your waking life, but that these all stem from a desire to show that the are a loving, caring and dedicated father/husband etc. On a personal level, your dream is asking you to reduce your levels of stress and anxiety. Meditation and walking alone are both good ways to do this. In terms of family, practice shrugging, not knowing the answer, and letting others take the lead, and you’ll see that love and closeness blossoms when it is allowed to get out of control. Spooky places to visit in

Scotland

The Secret Bunker in Troywood, Fife, St Andrews Spook Scale

1

Originally a farmhouse the building sits in Troywood in St Andrews and from the outside you would never know it held so many secrets. It was converted into an army base and 100 feet below ground leads to the command centre where things would have been controlled from had there been a nuclear war. There are still a few spooks floating around and as you can imagine many of them are military personnel. During my visit there was not a great deal happening but they do have a few nights where you can go and sit in and wait for the ghosts to arrive.

Provan Hall Glasgow

An old manor house that was used by King James 1V as a hunting lodge – the lodge dates back to the 1940’s when it was both wealthy and prestigious.

When it comes to spooky places Scotland has its fair share of them. There is everything from the Gray Lady although; I have never come across her to the old souls that once connected with the building. Here are 5 spooky places for you to check out for yourself – I have rated them on a scale of 1-5 1 being the least spook factor and 5 the best.

Having visited this place twice I can tell you that it is indeed haunted with the souls of the witches that were tortured there. I felt physically sick on entering the tower and at one point I had to come out for fresh air. Leonard Low is custodian of the building and does a wonderful tour if anyone is interested in having a

This wee pub is tucked away in Niddry Street in Edinburgh, mind you its not so wee when your inside and no wonder it has the name Labyrinth as it has a few areas all tucked away inside the pub – it took me a while to get my bearings on the place but down stairs right at the back is a dimly lit bar and Oh my, I did not get a warm or

A lot happened under ground in the Arches, in a by gone era women of the night, merchants and children would have frequented this area and the spooks are still there to prove it. It’s full of character although, perhaps not the scariest place I’ve ever been but it is still worth a visit.

When I decided to go and check it out it really had the WOW spook factor especially in one of the rooms on the lower level where the stench was overwhelming, no one else could smell it but it was so bad I had to get out and quick.

Star Signs

Flow The

Joan Charles

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries

In life there is ebb and flow and it’s a case of taking the good with the bad and seeing the potential in everything. I can see good news and whatever it is it’s a case of looking at the bigger picture.

Taurus

Keeping an eye on the money you have may be important to you just now but don’t go into obsessive mode other wise you will drive yourself and others mad. Create a plan and work to it.

Gemini I’m sensing an upset over a child and it will be something that

blows over but as a parent you will be keen to see them in a better mood. Maybe keeping your own council on this is the best way forward.

Cancer

A celebration will be a good opportunity to get out and let your hair down for a change. I’m seeing this connecting with a male who is close to you. The month of September is also relevant.

Leo

Now, the best piece of advice I can give you is not to play with fire because, if you do then your likely to get your fingers burned. Stay clear of situations that will attract more attention than you want.

Virgo Interesting times as something new in a work sense is presented

to you that you could be involved in and make your mark. You are known for your strong leadership qualities and this is what is called for now.

Libra

The burden of work could be weighing you down but if you just keep moaning and don’t do anything about it then nothing will change. Take charge of this situation and change it to something more suitable.

Scorpio

No point in crying over spilt milk that’s won’t get you anywhere; instead look at ways you could turn this to your favor. Your attitude about things will either make it positive or keep it negative – you choose.

Sagittarius

Being a victim of your own circumstances is where I feel you are at present and the point is you have the power to change this. Being a martyr to a cause that doesn’t serve you it no good at all.

Capricorn

You have the whole world in your hands and are able to balance things quite well at the moment – this is the way you want things to stay but, it would need you to keep focused on it to do so.

Aquarius

No matter what is thrown at you, you come up smelling of roses and folk wonder how on earth you manage to do it. Not much will keep you down and this is a quality that people admire and respect.

Pisces Better and calmer waters are ahead and your ship has set sail

into an ocean of tranquility so make the most of this as times have been trying to say the least. You are reaching your dreams so follow that star.

Synchronicity - defined as the simultane¬ous flow of two or more events that appear related, but seem to have no causal connection - is something we all experience as part of our everyday lives, and one of the most common ways we can interact with Spirit. Working with synchronicity is akin to having a second language: once you become fluent in it you find yourself able to understand life at a new level, one that you may not have been able to appreciate before.

Whether random or planned, causal events seem to come in all shapes and sizes. Some could be seen as ‘mistakes’ - the unforeseen consequence of our own actions - whilst others may appear as coincidences that we have no control over at all. From the perspective of metaphysics, this is a false distinction: there are no mistakes or coincidences and therefore, irrespective of whether the causal event is random or planned, everything that happens does so for a reason. As causal events occur, they set off a chain reaction, which enables the synchronicity that contributes toward creating what I call an individual’s ‘obvious’ reality. Because on the surface these events don’t appear to be connected, we perceive them as singular entities, stopping where they started. As a consequence, the purpose and meaning held within the chain reaction – even the chain reaction itself – remains hidden from us. Hidden, that is, until you begin to connect the dots on a conscious

www.glasgow-news.com level: until you start to translate synchronicity. Once this begins, the purpose and meaning is revealed and everything becomes clearer, because you are being given all the information, confirmation, inspiration and/or enlightenment that you’ll need to develop a greater understanding of life itself. This process culminates in the creation of something like a second, ‘hidden’ reality that runs beneath the first, ‘obvious’ one. Let’s consider the synchronicity occurring right in this moment. As you read this article, you and I are creating a chain of causal events, which are producing an ‘obvious’ reality:

receive information on the day that you needed to receive it. Again, there are no coincidences. As you’ll understand, even from this simple example, the ‘hidden’ reality is an integral part of our being on a daily basis. More so, it is connected to our subconscious and our pre-subconscious selves, both of which are used by our higher selves to connect us to the network of human consciousness. When our higher selves are in control of us in the ‘obvious’ reality, we tend to appear irrational and this is one of the reasons we can be perceived as acting uncharacteristically or making ‘mistakes.’

• Myself, who wrote the article • The newspaper, which printed the article • You, who are actively reading the article For some readers a translation of the ‘obvious’ to the ‘hidden’ may simply be that this isn’t a paper you usually read, but for some reason, today, you are. Perhaps you found it on a friend’s coffee table and had a spark of interest, or maybe it was left on a waiting room chair. Perhaps you read this paper regularly and you’ve been waiting for causality to catch up! The decision made in the ‘obvious’ reality, led to a further decision in the ‘hidden’ reality, which in turn must be taken back to the ‘obvious’ to continue the chain of events. In this way, the ‘hidden’ reality produces many of the scenarios that we eventually play out in the ‘obvious’ reality, even using them to manufacture our lives. In the ‘hidden’ reality, your essential action of reading the paper when you normally may not allowed you to

So, finally, how do you translate synchronicity? The only thing you need is an open mind that is receptive to the concept that all things are possible and anything can happen. We think, therefore we are: when you accept that the ‘hidden’ reality exists, it does. By recognizing even ‘mistakes’ as essential actions that reveal the ‘hidden’ reality, by identifying both the ‘obvious’ and ‘hidden’ aspects of chains of events, you can walk an easier path to your destination (or your destiny!)

TVWEEK Global glory awaits for

DON’T MISS… John Bishop's Australia, Monday, BBC1, 9pm.

John Bishop continues his Aussie cycling trek, stopping off to try his hand EVERY FRIDAY at surfing and cattle herding.

t’s a battle that’s fought fiercely, and one that will dominate the front pages of everyone’s newspaper in the morning.Who’s it between?

TAKE 2

HERCULES

FRIDAY 11 - THURSDAY 17 JULY

Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules battles terrifying foes in a fresh and visceral new take on this legendary action hero. Having completed his character-defining twelve labours, tormented Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) has become a battle-weary warrior who leads a band of mercenaries. The King of Thrace (John Hurt) calls upon him to help end a bloody civil conflict by defeating a savage, brutal warlord. Now Hercules must find the strength to become a hero again. But this will not simply be a battle against a formidable enemy, but a fight for his very soul! ‘Fast & Furious’ star Dwayne Johnson underwent eight months of serious working out for his role as the legendary Greek demi-god tough guy. ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ director Brett Ratner brilliantly conjures up such mythological enemies as the hydra and gargantuan boar, while rooting his ‘Hercules’ in heartpounding, grittily realistic warfare. The exceptional supporting cast includes Brits Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes.

HOUSE OF MAGIC A stray cat seeks shelter in a magician’s house full of animals and crazy gizmos in this enchanting family animation. Adorable abandoned ginger cat Thunder (Murray Blue) is seeking shelter from a storm when he tumbles into a creepy old house. This is the home of retired magician Lawrence (Doug Stone), aka ‘The Illustrious Lorenzo’! He shares it with a menagerie of beasts and a whole host of amazing automatons. Ginger isn’t popular with some of the other residents, especially Maggie the mouse (Shanelle Gray) and Jack the rabbit (George Babbit). But their plans to get rid of him take a back seat when Lawrence’s scheming nephew Daniel (Grant George) tries to trick him into selling their home. Now everyone must band together to scare the willies out of prospective purchasers! This is a fun-packed family adventure from the people who gave us ‘Fly Me to the Moon.

EARTH TO ECHO A trio of kids find their lives changed forever when they befriend an alien being with amazing powers! Tuck (Astro), Munch (Reese Hartwig) and Alex (Teo Halm) are at a crossroads in their young lives. Fed up with being well-behaved nobodies, they face separation when a massive highway construction project forces their families to move away. With just two days to go before this big upheaval, the lads find a curious signal on their mobile phones. Filming their adventure, they head into the desert to trace its source. Here they find an alien entity that seems to be stranded on Earth. They call their new friend Echo and find that it has incredible abilities. But sinister government forces are also on Echo’s tail! This first feature from a talented writer/director team features a fresh young cast and balances breathtaking ‘Transformers’-style sci fi with a heartfelt story of childhood friendship.

THE PURGE America’s annual night of mayhem gets even scarier in this edge-of-seat sequel to the futuristic horror hit. In nearfuture America, the Purge has become established as a national event. Each year, all crime is legal during one allocated twelve-hour period - even murder. Emergency services are suspended and ordinary citizens are warned to keep off the streets to avoid getting caught up in the carnage. But for one young couple (Zack Gilford, Kiele Sanchez) in Los Angeles, disaster strikes when their car breaks down just as the Purge begins. Elsewhere in the city, an armed man (Frank Grillo) takes to the streets bent on revenge and two women (Carmen Ejogo, Zoe Soul) are dragged from their home by sinister uniformed figures. The fight for survival has begun! Writer/director James DeMonaco’s dystopian nightmare thriller ‘The Purge’ was a surprise box office hit last year. Now he returns to amp up the tension with this nerve-shredding sequel.

Now it’s the school holidays, why not make brekkie for the whole family! Rememeber and get a grown up to help you! This recipe serves 4

Ingredients

175g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 25g caster sugar • 2 free-range eggs, separated • 250ml milk • 25g butter • 12 rashers bacon • maple/ golden syrup to serve

Method Place the flour, baking powder and caster sugar into a bowl and stir to combine. Add the egg yolks and milk to the bowl with the dry ingredients and whisk to make a smooth batter. In a separate clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed, then fold into the batter. Ask a grown up helper to heat a large frying pan until hot, add the butter and heat until melted and foaming. Place ladlefuls of the batter into the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form on top of the batter. Turn the pancakes over using a spatula and cook for a further minute on the other side. Remove from the pan and keep warm until ready to serve. Repeat the process with the remaining batter. While the pancakes are cooking, ask a grown up to line a baking tray with foil and lay out the bacon. Cook in the oven until bacon is crispy. Ask your helper to remove from the tray and drain on kitchen paper. To serve, divide the pancakes among four serving plates, top with the bacon and drizzle with syrup. You better lay out some napkins… It can get messy!

Animal of the week...

Highland cattle (also known as the hairy cow) are an old Scottish breed of cow, bred primarily for their beef. They are famous for their long haired orange coats which help the hairy cows to cope with the freezing scottish weather. Highland cattle also have two horns on the tops of their heads which they use to dig through thick snow to find the vegetation underneath and they also use their horns in order to defend themselves. Highland cattle are herbivorous mammals and therefore only eat plant matter, mainly grasses. They originally come from Scotland, but can also be found in Europe, North America and Australia.

warn landlords over fire safety

If you think you’re paying too much for your rent think again, a flat in London’s exclusive Knightsbridge area overlooking Hyde Park is on the rental market for a staggering £50k a week.

With the clock ticking down to Glasgow 2014 the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is issuing key advice to homeowners considering renting out their property during the Commonwealth Games.

The property, according to the estate agents handling it ‘Is one of the finest positions in London and has sensational views.’

Officers want to ensure anyone welcoming paying guests into their homes understands they need to comply with fire safety legislation.

In an attempt to justify the unbelievable weekly rental price, the agent is promoting the flat saying: ‘It is very rare to find a property of this square footage on one floor with the addition of 2,000s square foot terrace overlooking Hyde Park.’

Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay, Director of Prevention and Protection for SFRS, explained: “Glasgow 2014 is the biggest event ever to take place in Scotland and we want to make sure everyone who comes here for the Games has an enjoyable and safe visit.

The owner of the property, who is remaining anonymous, has attempted to capitalise on the exuberance of the London prime property market and hopes to lease the flat to a billionaire, of which there is no shortage in London. The property boasts 9,000 square feet of floorspace, six garden terraces with square footage of around 2,000 feet, the flat is equivalent to two new build homes on a single floor. By

“Basic safety steps – like having working smoke alarms and a clear escape route that everyone is aware of – are absolutely essential for every property and apply to residents as much they do to guests.

“Anyone who rents out a property however, even if it’s only for a short time, has a duty of care under the Fire Scotland Act and it’s important they understand what that means.” There are three essential things anyone renting out their property needs to do: 1) Make sure you have carried out a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment of your property and take action to address any significant fire risks you identify. 2) Make sure you have an adequate fire detection and warning system in place, such as fitting working smoke alarms on every level of your home. 3) Make sure there is an adequate escape route and that all guests know what to do if there is a fire. Prime property growth spreading across UK

According to international property adviser Savills, steady prime property growth is now spreading outside of London to the rest of the UK. Regional markets across Britain are seeing slow but steady increases in the values of prime real estate. The UK prime market average rose by 5.7% in the year to the end of June and 3.1% in the first six months of 2014, the Savills prime regional index shows.

Though less than the growth seen in the first quarter, second quarter growth averaged 1.1%, in line with prime London where the rate of price rises has slowed and suggesting that the gap between the two markets may have peaked.

‘There is now clear evidence that the recovery is taking hold across the UK more widely, with a return to former 2007 peak values still a useful benchmark of that recovery,’ said Lucian Cook, Savills UK

head of residential research.

At the extreme, in Scotland, where the forthcoming independence referendum is causing some uncertainty, particularly amongst buyers from outside Scotland who are key to a full recovery in the high value markets, prices are 21.9% below peak. The market above £2 million remains more fragile, with the price threshold that resulted from stamp duty increases remaining entrenched. This is evidenced in the prime

country house market which recorded quarterly growth of just 0.1%. ‘The recovery in this high value marketplace is hard to generalise, since every property and location is unique. Some properties are selling rapidly, with competition, while others require price adjustments to sell as fragile buyer sentiment remains susceptible to the changing news agenda, in particular the renewed spectre of a mansion tax,’ explained Cook. Toyota reveals photos of new hydrogen powered saloon Toyota has revealed the final design, pricing and estimated release dates for it’s latest hydrogen powered saloon car dubbed the Fuel Cell. The final production ready car which closely resembles it’s concept car forbear presented at the Tokyo motor show last year, has been slated for release in the Japanese market for April of next year, with Europe and North America to follow slightly later on in the year. The car will cost approximately £40,000 and make use of Toyotas latest hydrogen fuel burning power plant the FC Stack, which generates electricity from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen which is supplied by the Fuel Cells high pressure hydrogen tanks, resulting in only one byproduct, water vapour.

Hydrogen has great potential as an alternative fuel. It can be produced from a wide variety of primary energy sources, including solar and wind power; it is easy to store and transport; and when compressed, it has a higher energy density than batteries. It could also be used in a much wider range of applications beyond automotive and domestic use, including large-scale power generation. Toyota’s commitment developing vehicles that are kinder to the

environment is based on three principles: embracing diverse energy sources; securing low vehicle emissions; and driving positive environmental change by making these vehicles popular with customers. Karl Schlicht, Executive Vice President Toyota Motor Europe, said: “We are very excited by the arrival of fuel cell

technology. Of course there are many challenges ahead, such as the availability of fuelling infrastructure and customer

Insurance costs continue to fall according to comparison firm According to pricing data released by a leading insurance comparison firm, the cost of car insurance premiums has continued to decline as the year continues.

The data was gathered after analysis was carried out on 42.5 million car insurance quotes that were queried through the

comparison companies website between January 2011 and June 2014. The analysis has shown that the cost of insuring your car has fallen by around 3.1 percent over the last 12 months, despite a number of temporary spikes in the market. The biggest monthly fall came between May and June of this year with a drop of 1.2% within

the 60 day period.

These results mean that currently, those shopping for a new insurance policy this month stand to make a saving equivalent to two monthly payments in comparison to the same time last year, without having to compromise on the quality of the plan they purchase.

One of the main reasons for the dip in prices over the last 12 months is thanks to the government and the insurance industry cracking down on fraudulent and flippant claims, reducing the number of pay outs and thus reducing the insurance premium for the customer. By

BMW reports record sales for first half of year

Ford announces half year sales figures This week Ford announced its half year sales figures for the UK, smashing the competition for the number of new cars registered from January to June of this year. The manufacturer has revealed that it leads its nearest rival by 54,000 registrations this year and that two of it’s models in the passenger vehicle sector, the Fiesta and Focus, have topped the sales market ahead of any other brand alongside two of it’s commercial models, the Transit and Transit Custom. The Fiesta lead the UK market in the first half of this year with almost 28,000 sales, 2.2% ahead of its nearest competitor with the Focus following

behind taking the number two spot in the UK market. Ford medium commercial sales, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit and Ford Transit Custom, reached 32,411 for the first half of 2014 up from 30,934. Ford light commercial sales for the same period are up from 5,544 to 6,675 and are now benefitting from the recent launches of the Ford Transit Connect and the Ford Transit Courier that are part of the extended Ford Transit family. Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: ‘Ford has extended its sales lead through the first half of 2014 thanks to the support of its dealer partners, who

make up the strongest dealer network in the UK, and the company’s commitment to new models and technologies. This investment is today extending Ford’s market footprint in the important CV segment with the Ford Transit family, and will fuel future premium model introductions such as the Ford Edge, the Ford Mustang and the Vignale ranges. Evidence of Ford’s industry-leading technologies is seen in sporty new Ford Fiesta editions that use a 140PS version of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the winner of the International Engine of the Year trophy for an unprecedented third consecutive year.’ By

This week BMW announced record sales in it’s half year report, with sales figures showing over £1 million cars delivered in the last six months, a figure the company has never achieved in its history. Worldwide a total of 1,020,211 cars were delivered to customers, an increase of 6.9% over the same period last year, the marque also reported that there were a record number of sales during the month of June. BMW board member Ian Robertson reacted to the news saying: ‘This is the first time we’ve sold more than a million cars in the first half of the year and underscores the strength of our premium brands within the BMW Group. June is the latest in a long line of record months and the figures confirm we’re on the right track to

achieve our target of delivering more than 2 million vehicles in 2014. We aim to continue our sales growth in the second half of the year’. However, while BMW’s traditional offerings report and upsurge in ownership figures, MINI, the companies British subsidiary has seen a decline in sales, particularly after the release of the new range of five door cars at the beginning of March. However according to BMW the brand is reporting a steady upward trend as of last month. Countering the MINI’s poor performance, BMW’s Rolls Royce division is showing massive growth, with an increase in sales of 33.4% for the first half of the year, with America over taking China as the brands number one marketplace for new cars. AGAINST ALL ODDS I think it’s fair to see this has been the best World Cup since Italia 90. We’ve had goals, we’ve had dodgy decisions, we’ve had Brazil annihilated on home soil, we’ve had Germany scoring more goals in the space 6 minutes than England scored in the whole tournament, James Rodriguez justified his hefty price tag, David Luiz not so much! This Saturday is what it all comes down to - Top Gun, the best of the best, Maverick v Iceman, Germany v Argentina to claim the ultimate prize. There will be one name, and one name only etched on The FIFA World Cup Trophy , and that name will be Germany They have been the most consistent, and improved as the tournament has went on, add Klose, now all-time top goal scorer in the World add Muller in to the mix, and you have a recipe for success. As a fan of both teams to score normally, this game has that written all over it, with Germany prevailing. Take Germany to win and btts at a huge price of 5/1 12th July, as mentioned last week, sees the Darley cup take place, and word from the stable is that Slade Power is coming in to the race in great fettle, so my selection has only strengthened, Slade Power, currently trading at odds of 5/2, is still my selection. Cavendish set to miss Commonwealth Games Mark Cavendish’s fears have been realised after the Isle of Man born cyclist discovered he will be unable to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Cavendish was involved in a brutal collision with fellow cyclist Simon Gerrans during the sprint stage of the Tour De France in Harrogate. Cavendish, who has also withdrawn from the Tour De France feared the

worse after the painful looking crash, doctors broke the unfortunate news that he needs surgery to repair his injured shoulder, after dislocating his shoulder as well as damaging all his ligaments during the fall. Doctors have confirmed that Cavendish is expected to be out for six weeks and upon hearing the diagnosis he said “Its worse than I was hoping, all I can do is focus on getting back racing as quickly as possible.”

With the dust now settled on last Sunday’s pulsating Scottish derby defeat at the hands of rivals Edinburgh, the Glasgow Tigers will take confidence from their battling performance, going down by just 4 points against the league’s form side, as they shape up for a rare Monday speed-night against 2012 champs Scunthorpe Scorpions. Tigers should welcome back Aussie Christian Henry from a recent absence caused by an infected arm wound, and Henry’s return will allow the Tigers to track a seven man team once again which itself lessens the strain on man and machinery.

Whilst Tigers will once again look to Rusty Harrison - who scored a sensational 14 point haul against Edinburgh - Kevin Wolbert and skipper Theo Pijper to pick up the race wins against the Scorpions, however it is in the reserve berth tailend of the side that the home camp will look for most improvement with Dane Kasper Lykke, and Aussie guest Mason Campton required to up their contribution from that against the Monarchs on Sunday. The Scorpions have themselves suffered some mixed form this season, however do track a strong looking side led by Danish International Nikolai Klindt and British finalists David Howe and Josh Auty. Given recent performances the Allied Vehicles Tigers will go into this

meeting with the belief that they can add to their premier league points tally, however undoubtedly Scunthorpe who earned a draw at Ashfield a year ago - will be primed to strike a blow to Glasgow’s challenge. Monday night’s fixture - the second attempt to host the Scorpions this season - offers a rare departure from Sunday afternoon racing and should also allow track conditions to be more manageable than can be the case on a warm afternoon. Fans have been treated to some superb speedway in the past couple of weeks and this Monday promises to again be hard fought and spectacular. Start time on Monday is 7:15pm - see Tigers website for further information www.glasgowtigers.co

World Cup Round-Up

After nearly a month of football, 168 goals, countless players suffering head knocks (seriously how many has there been?) an enormous grasshopper taking a penalty, goal line technology and also Fifa introducing us to dispersible shaving foam in a can. The World Cup final is upon us.

Germany, the highest scoring team in the tournament, against Messi’s Argentina, officially the team who have conceded the least amount of goals, flair against gritty determination. Connor McCloud against the Kurgan, Ali vs Foreman or Popeye vs Bluto. It comes down to, Muller chasing the dream of being World Cup top scorer, against arguably the greatest player to grace the game, Messi. Both yearning for World Cup winning prestige. Joachim Low against Alejandro Sabella, the chance of immortality, to triumph, the chance to live eternal. There will only be one. Joachim Low’s team lay waste to tournament favourites Brazil. The tournament holders conceding seven goals in what many are considering the worst performance in World Cup history (certainly in the latter stages). Almost certainly the worst result in

Brazil’s illustrious history, bereft of idea’s and missing injured talisman Neymar as well as team captain Thiago Silva. Brazil capitulated and very emphatically announced to the world that the spirit of Samba football is dead. Let us not digress from Germany’s complete performance and total annihilation of Brazil but Germany didn’t even need to reach peak performance to dismantle Scolari’s men. Germany defender Mats Hummels has admitted that in the dressing room at half time, both he and his team mates agreed not to disrespect tournament hosts Brazil he said “We had to stay serious and concentrate at half time. We agreed to show Brazil some respect and it was also very important that we did this and didn’t try to show some magic or something like this, it was important we play our game for 90 minutes.” Argentina on the other hand had to battle their way to the final of the World Cup, defeating a stubborn Netherlands side. With both Messi and Robben receiving some rough treatment during the game, the enigmatic front men had considerably quiet evenings, in comparison to the levels expected of them. With both teams failing to score in 90 minutes and again failing in the proceeding 30, it was down to the

dramatic penalty shoot out. Netherlands could claim to have been feeling slightly more confident, having successfully progressed to the semis in the same fashion, however they had Tim Krul to thank for that, after Van Gaal’s timely substitution. No such decision this time as Van Gaal was forced into making his three substitutions prior to the penalty shoot out.

Scotland stars lend their weight to Royal Bank of Scotland RugbyForce 2014

Footballing purists will have been glad to see Argentina progress as Netherlands spent the game trying to shut down Argentinian attacks and showed little or no ambition to do anything other than contain. In football however, penalties are the psychological version of Russian Roulette, bottles crash and players fold, but heroes are made and keepers can become Gods. It was Netherlands Tim Krul against Costa Rica and Argentina’s Sergio Romero against Netherlands. Romero saving three of the five penalties. Netherlands hearts were broken, Messi was emotional on the touchline and Argentina believe. Germany vs Argentina. The World Cup final. One nation will rise. By

Gregg Kelly

In less than four months’ time they’ll be taking on the might of New Zealand, but the first big new season assignment for Scotland’s rugby stars will be rolling up their sleeves and helping out at Royal Bank of Scotland RugbyForce events up and down the country.

In total, close to 150 clubs across Scotland have this year signed up for Royal Bank RugbyForce, a key part of the bank’s drive to help them become more sustainable. Royal Bank RugbyForce is designed to galvanise clubs’ current players, supporters, social members and volunteers and attract new ones for the year ahead.

The 10 clubs where international players will be lending a hand on Saturday 9 August were today revealed, with a strong geographical spread in evidence once more.

In previous years, the focus has been on amassing volunteers to help spruce up facilities, but more and more clubs are now using the weekend to encourage the local community to get involved longer-term.

From Stornoway to Galashiels, Vern Cotter’s troops will be supporting clubs to throw open their doors and show the local community what they’ve got to offer in advance of the big kick-off to season 2014/15. When registering for Royal Bank RugbyForce, clubs were asked to describe how a visit from a Scotland player would add value and interest to their event. The ten most compelling submissions came from: Deeside, Forrester, Gala, Harris Academy FP, Kilmarnock, Livingston, Lochaber, McLaren, Stornoway and Clydebank, where this week’s announcement took place.

Events being put on include family barbecues, “come and try” touch rugby sessions, gala days with stalls and stands, regional minis, tens and sevens tournaments and joint open days with other local sports clubs, as well as the time-honoured array of DIY and manual tasks. All registered clubs receive £250 towards event funds, posters and a banner to get the word out plus event planning and communications support. By signing up, they will also be able to take advantage of Royal Bank Locker Room, a programme that gives access to complimentary kit and equipment.

Rangers come out on top in ‘big tax case’ appeal By

In a shock decision, it was announced this week by the first tier tribunal handling the HMRC’s appeal against Rangers and the Murray Group that the first tier tribunals decision in November 2013 regarding the Rangers FC tax bill would be upheld. This latest decision by the upper tier tribunal will force HMRC to substantially reduce their demands of £42.6 million pounds from the club in unpaid taxes. While the quashing of HMRC’s appeal will uphold the bulk of the first tier tribunals verdict, there are a number of issues which are going to be subject to further investigation and re-examination by the authorities. The payments which remain the subject of investigation specifically are five ‘guaranteed bonus’ payments. Sir David Murray has made a statement in which he claims that there have been ‘no winners’ in the case saying: ‘We are pleased with the judgement which again leaves negligible tax liability and overwhelmingly supports the views collectively and consistently held by our advisers, legal counsel. The decision substantially reduces HMRC’s claim in the liquidation of the old Rangers Football Club. While we have been successful in both the first tier tribunal and upper tier tribunal, there are, as we have stated

previously, no victors. This has been an exceptionally long, difficult and expensive process involving not just the first tier tribunal and upper tier tribunal but also several approaches to resolve the matter with senior HMRC officials on a commercially sensible basis for all parties which were rejected.’ Mr Murray in his statement also raised concerns over the possibility of future investment in the club due to the tarnishing of it’s reputation thanks to the HMRC case saying: ‘it is obvious that the much publicised existence of these proceedings overshadowed Rangers Football Club for many years and tarnished the external perception of its value. There can be little doubt that despite favourable legal opinion, potential acquirers were therefore dissuaded from pursuing their interest during a period in which we were marketing the sale of MIH’s shareholding. The case has also stimulated extensive press and social media comment, discussion and speculation, a significant quantity of which has been ill informed.’
