Glasgow unites against rape
Around 5000 people pounded the pavements of Glasgow on Monday night to show solidarity against rape after a stream of sexual attacks took place in the city over the past few weeks. The peaceful demonstration was organised by two local women, Ashley Crossan and Amanda Johnston, from Govanhill, who fear walking around their neighbourhood at night. The pair set up a Facebook event called ‘These Streets Were Made for Walking’ to publicise the event.

The crowd gathered at the gates of Queen’s Park at 11:45pm and walked around Govanhill a route which included the now infamous Dixon Avenue, where one of the rapes took place last month. A number of sexual assaults have taken place recently across the city. The first of which occured on the 10th of May when a woman was gang-raped in Toryglen followed by a second sexual assaukt on Dixon Avenue the following week. A further attack took place in Kelvingrove Park, with a further two attacks occuring at the beginning of this week.

The march which was attended by a crowd in the thousands was a peaceful event, no banners or chanting were permitted. The walkers were cheered on by people from their windows, including an elderly couple who looked delighted something was being done to try and make the streets safer. The crowd was mixed, with people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. I spoke to one attendee, who said “It’s great to see so many people turning out, especially the amount of men. By

ith the World Cup taking over much of the television schedules for the next couple of weeks, this little gem nestled within it is a welcome distraction for the animal lovers amongst us. And when it comes to the animal kingdom, veterinary surgeon-turned-television presenter Mark Evans certainly knows his stuff, which is why it’s no surprise he’s found himself at the helm of Born in the Wild (Sunday, Channel 4, 8pm), alongside comparative anatomist Joy Reidenberg. Between them, the presenters are exploring the weird and wonderful ways animals find a partner, mate and give birth – and you should believe them when they tell you it’s not as
straight forward as you’d think. In the fantastic series opener last week, Mark and Joy kicked off their investigations in Africa, where they explained how elephant mating is far from a private event, and how a 100kg baby can be delivered safely. This week, the presenters pay a visit Down Under to uncover the reproductive secrets of some of the strangest mammals on Earth: the pouchwearing marsupials. They tell of how the kangaroo not only survives, but thrives in one of the driest environments on Earth, the Australian Outback. Mark’s kitted out at a remote research station, and uses night-imaging cameras to hopefully catch wild male kangaroos track down fertile

females. These animals will mate all year round, but typically tend to wait until the good weather arrives, because this is when food is more readily available. Over in Queensland’s eucalypt forests, Mark also takes a look at the routines of tree-dwelling marsupials – koalas – to see how they have mastered gravitydefying sex. Meanwhile, at a kangaroo sanctuary, Joy watches kangaroos mating, and uses ultrasound to monitor the progress of a pregnancy. Plus, she witnesses a new-born feeding from its mother’s teat inside her
pouch. Joy then heads to Adelaide, where she learns how critically endangered rock wallabies are being saved using foster mothers. And here’s the graphic part; the programme also tells of how female kangaroos have three vaginas – and why they’re needed and how male marsupials use sperm plugs to beat the competition. Just to crank up the ‘aww’ factor, Mark and Joy will be revealing how new-born babies the size of a paper clip are able to climb into their mother’s pouch, where they will stay keeping warm, drinking milk, until about six months of age.To say that this must be a dream job for Mark would be quite the understatement.

Police patrols to rise after recent attacks
Continued from front page “Many people like to assume that this is a female issue, but this is an issue that affects all of us, as we all have mothers, wives, nieces and daughters. This is about the community, and the community spoke out loud and clear tonight.” Louise and Sian, both 23, both live in the south side of Glasgow and believe a woman should be able to walk our streets at night without being frightened. Louise said, “I struggle to understand why the onus falls onto women as potential victims of sex crimes, to
take responsibility for the actions of those perpetrators. “I would hope that if I were to become a victim of an attack I wouldn’t be judged for my actions and would instead, receive support from the Police and the public in raising awareness and tackling the sexist ‘blame culture’.” Sian said “With how frequent the attacks are, I’ve become fearful of my own city.” “How more cautious can women be when we already have to take measures that most men don’t, in order to get to and from an area safely?” Ashley, 28, posted on the Facebook
page on Tuesday morning, “What an incredible night. A perfect and peaceful walk. “An amazing turn out. We had people travel from Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness to walk with us. We had worldwide messages of support from France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, USA and Australia.” “But most importantly thank you to each and every one of the thousands of people who turned out to walk our streets and the tens of thousands more who supported us online. “Thank you for helping us walk our streets without fear. These Streets Were Made for Walking - and we walked them!”
Three suspects arrested over attacks – Five suspects still at large Three men have been arrested in connection with three of the recent rapes that have taken place in Glasgow over the past two months. The rapes are not believed to be related.
The men were arrested over the attacks in Merchant City, Giffnock and Kelvingrove Park. Five suspects are still at large. Three further suspects are being hunted in relation to the attack in Toryglen.
Police are also looking for two men who raped a woman in Dixon Avenue in Govanhill.
Detective superintendent Peter McPike said: “I’m aware that the recent incidents are causing concern but I would like to reassure people that officers investigating these crimes are specially trained to deal with these particular circumstances. “They are dedicated and determined to seek justice for the victims and are committed to finding those responsible.
The Harry Potter author has publicly sided with the Better Together campaign, and believes Independance carries serious risks. Rowling posted a statement on her website, where she airs her views on the matter. She said “I came to the question of independence with an open mind and
an awareness of the seriousness of what we are being asked to decide.
“My hesitance at embracing independence has nothing to do with lack of belief in Scotland’s remarkable people or its achievements. “The simple truth is that Scotland is subject to the same 21st century pressures as the rest of the world. It must compete in the same global markets, defend itself from the same threats and navigate what still feels
Kenny MacAskill told ministers at Holyrood yesterday that police patrols had been stepped up in the city. The announcement following the march in Govanhill on Monday night. Mr MacAskill told the Scottish Parliament that, following the attack in Merchant City, police have immediately launched an extensive inquiry and deployed a large team of specialist investigators. MacAskill said “The sexual assaults that have taken place in the Glasgow
area, including the incident last Sunday, are very distressing. “Police Scotland have since deployed extra foot and car patrols in the city centre and areas where the other attacks took place.” “It is important that our streets are capable of being walked on by anybody irrespective of their gender or age or indeed disability and to be able to be done so without fear. “All of us this in the chamber, irrespective of our political views, share the abhorrence at what has taken place and give our full support to law enforcement.” By

Scots are saving more for retirement
“Rape is a devastating crime and has a significant impact on victims and their families – it also impacts on local communities. “Over the past few months, we have had, and will continue to have, additional patrols.
“It’s not acceptable that people should live their lives in a state of perpetual vigilance or be responsible for the actions of others.” By

JK Rowling donates £1m to Better Together campaign Author JK Rowling has donated £1million to help the campaign against Scottish independence.
More police patrols will be on the streets after the recent series of sexual assaults in Glasgow, the justice secretary has said.
like a fragile economic recovery.
“ The more I listen to the ‘Yes’ campaign, the more I worry about its minimisation and even denial of risks. Whenever the big issues are raised our heavy reliance on oil revenue if we become independent, what currency we’ll use, whether we’ll get back into the EU - reasonable questions are drowned out by accusations of ‘scaremongering’”. Scottish people are saving more than double the ammount they did seven years ago, a report has revealed. The report, by the Scottish Widows, showed that in 2007 Scots were putting away £51 every month compared to £119 now. It found that auto-enrolment - where workers are automatically signed up to a workplace pension scheme is playing a vital role in increasing the number of people preparing for retirement. Scottish Widows found 55% of people in Scotland are saving adequately in preparation for retiring. However, experts have warned that some people are not saving anything, which will
affect them in later life. Ian Naismith, pensions expert at Scottish Widows, said: “It is heartening to see that finally Scots are starting to sit up and take notice of the importance of planning for the future - whether this be through pro-actively upping their contributions due to a more favourable economic climate, or starting to make plans for their retirement for the first time thanks to auto-enrolment.” He added: “Although we have undoubtedly made some significant strides forward since our research first began, there are still some groups who are not preparing adequately for a comfortable later life and are at risk of slipping through the net.” By

Scotland’s Greenhouse Gas Timebomb
Scotland and the S.N.P’s aims of lowering the amount of Carbon Dioxide emissions into the atmosphere lie in tatters after it was revealed that 52.9m tonnes were released into the atmosphere in 2012. This meant there was an overall increase of nearly 1% percent in harmful emissions released into the atmosphere and caused the annual emissions target to be revised after 2012. The Scottish Government still promised people that they were on course to hit their target of 42%percent less Carbon Dioxide released into the atmosphere by 2020. Considering the outrage that the idea of fracking in Scotland(and Britain) is causing it was surprising to hear the Conservatives recommending fracking as a mean of boosting energy supplies. Labour then accused the Scottish Government of political spin after the damning report suggested that Scotland will gravely miss its emissions target set for 2020. Between 1990 and 2012 there had been improvements in the overall emissions released into the atmosphere but they were also compounded with rises in 1999, 2005, 2010 and
2012 proving that it was unwise for people to rest on their laurels in regards to climate change and protecting the environment. Environment and Climate Change Minister Paul Wheelhouse said “Scotland has the world’s leading climate change targets. With a target of 42%percent by 2020 we are ahead of the UK at 34%percent and well ahead of the EU at 20%percent. Aiming for a spectacular reaching target is fantastic to read about on paper, but it fails to take into consideration the amount of hard work that will need to go into redesigning infrastructure in Scotland to help utilise green energy and use it to reduce carbon emission in years to come. Scottish Labour’s environment spokeswoman Claire Baker said: “It is five years since the Climate Change Act was passed by the parliament but so far the Scottish Government’s lack of action has led to a significant lack of progress on a number of environmental targets.” She continued. “Time is running out for the Scottish Government to prove they are serious about meeting their own targets.” By

Cosgrove Care’s Sponsored Family Fun Bike and Hike Join Cosgrove Care at their second annual sponsored family fun bike and hike on Sunday 22 June at Rouken Glen Park.
If you have 2 wheels, 3 wheels, 4 wheels, feet or paws, you’ll find that this is an activity that will be fun for all generations of the family. Cosgrove are asking participants or nonparticipants to drop off any unwanted bikes on the day. These bikes will be donated to The Barrhead Mellow Velo Club (BMVC) for their service users to repair and recycle. The BMVC is a cycling club started by The Barrhead Centre Service Users’ Committee. They aim to give every adult with a disability in East Renfrewshire the opportunity to access cycling and to promote cycling in the wider community. As part of this, they have also set up a workshop to service/repair and cycle from the community at very reasonable prices. They also take donations of unwanted bikes which they repair/upcycle and then sell.
Community Fundraising Officer, Nicola Walsh said: “We are really excited to have the guys from Mellow Velo involved in this year’s bike and hike and between us we hope to highlight that light exercise can be a fun and social activity. Dad celebrate’s losing 3 Stone in time for Father’s Day Super-slimming Dad Anthony Keenan from Glasgow’s east end is celebrating this Father’s Day after losing 3st . Now feeling great about himself and about being a healthy role model to his family.
Shettleston Slimming World group, says she’s proud of Anthony “Not only has he changed his own life for the better, he has changed his families’ lives too. At Slimming World we’ve been seeing more and more men joining our groups and even though slimming is traditionally seen as more of a women’s thing, men are actually giving them a run for their money.”
Last year, Anthony was unhappy with his weight and felt his size was getting in the way of every aspect of his life – including looking after his family. Since joining the Shettleston Slimming World group held at the Methodist church hall, Shettleston Roadd he has lost an amazing 3st between him and his wife they have lost an amazing 5 and a half stone. Anthony, joined Slimming World last August. “I’m so much more confident since losing 3st. I’m also much more active, which means I can walk with the kids and new grandchild, go swimming or to the playground. Before losing weight I just watched them from the sidelines and felt frustrated that I couldn’t join in. It was like their lives were passing me by. Now I feel much better . I’m not on the sidelines any more. Anthony from Glasgow has lost 3st since he joined Slimming World in
The Shettleston Slimming World group is held every Tuesday at the Methodist church Shettleston Rd. Ann Marie adds: “I’d love anyone who is thinking about losing weight, including men who are unhappy with their size or parents worried about their children’s weight, to come along. It’s a great way to get the whole family involved in sharing ideas about food and how to get more active.” August. He says: “Losing weight was without a doubt one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Slimming World’s eating plan fits in with our family so we can still all eat the same things, we often sit down together now
to eat healthy, home made meals that the whole family enjoy. I can make sure they’re still filling, full of flavour and low in fat all at the same time. By grilling instead of frying, swapping white bread for whole meal and
going easy on the butter, I can serve up a hearty weekend breakfast like a plateful of eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans and toast and still lose weight!” Annmarie

The Lord Provost lead a children’s service Wednesday 11 June 2014 to pay tribute to Glaswegians who died during the First World War.
the idea of this event. If Remembrance Day is to continue being important for us all then we need our young people to be informed as to how and why it grew out of the Great War. It will also help our youngsters realise why it is such a privilege for the city to be the venue for the Commonwealth Service marking the outbreak of the war on 4 August.”
The service, which was attended by 200 primary school children and their teachers, representing schools from across the city, was part of Glasgow’s endeavours to raise awareness of the major role it played during the war both at home and on the front line.
During the First World War service, the children will see original footage from 1914, a dramatisation of life during the war by drama pupils from Knightswood Secondary and will take part in a sing along of songs from the era.
The event was held at Glasgow Cathedral and will reflect a service at the cathedral on 4 August when Glasgow will hold a Commonwealth commemoration marking the centenary of the start of the war. Some 200,000 Glasgow men volunteered for the First World War, leaving behind their jobs and loved ones. Of those, 18,000 lost their lives and 34,500 were injured, many seriously. The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Cllr Sadie Docherty, who is leading the city’s centenary remembrance, said: “It is important that Glaswegians of all ages come together to mark, commemorate and remember our city’s citizens’ contribution to the First World War. “As Glasgow prepares to become the focal point of the UK and Commonwealth activities to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the war, it is only fitting we engage with our city’s young people.
That is why we have worked in partnership with Glasgow Cathedral to create this special children’s service. “I am very clear that as our city’s new brand emphasises - People Make Glasgow - we must also recognise and remember our past citizens who have helped make Glasgow what it is today. “This year and for the coming four years we will ensure that the stories of Glaswegians who lived, fought and died in the First World War are collected and that we remember our city’s huge contribution to the war effort.” Reverend Laurence Whitley of Glasgow Cathedral, who will be conducting the service, said: “All credit to the council for initiating
It is hoped that the event will give everyone involved a clearer understanding of why the coming commemorations are so important. In May, the Lord Provost launched a new website and database – www.firstworldwarglasgow.co.uk - which will collect and tell the stories of Glaswegians during the war. This website is part of a project entitled Their Name Liveth Forevermore, which is part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project aims to create a living database of Glaswegians during the First World War and encourage school children to learn about their community’s involvement in the conflict through memorials in their area.

The threats were sent via email to Bowes parents, one of which was received on the day that a rally to celebrate Bowe’s release was planned in his hometown of Hailey, Idaho. The event was cancelled immediately due to security concerns. There has been a massive amount of controversy over the prisoner

Pope Francis fires Vatican Bank chiefs
After an attack which lasted 6 hours and left 28 people dead at Pakistan’s busiest civilian airport, the Taliban has claimed responsibility, sinking any hopes of successful peace talks with the group after the Pakistani government vows revenge in the wake of the attack. The attack which was carried out by 10 heavily armed gunmen began on Sunday night. The men who carried out the attacks are reported to have disguised themselves as airport security forces before opening fire on civilians waiting to board flights. The Pakistani military responded
It was announced last week in a statement from the Vatican that Pope Francis has fired four out of five Cardinals who were appointed to oversee the Vatican Bank by his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI shortly before his resignation. The Cardinals who were only 11 months into their five year term were fired by Pope Francis. The group of Cardinals, all of whom were Italian, were fired on advice from one of the Vatican Banks directors, Swissman René Brülhart, a unordained money laundering expert. The Cardinals, who were at the heart of money laundering scandals which rocked the Italian banking sector and shook the confidence of investors, have been replaced with a team of international experts. The new team of experts, which in a groundbreaking first, includes a woman, signals that Pope Francis’
plans to create a ‘poor church’, one that focuses on using its vast financial wealth to help the world’s poor rather than continue to increase the splendour of the Vatican, are well underway. This clearing away of the ‘old boys club’ on the advice of Brülhart, who claims he was being stifled in his duties of tracking corruption within the bank and the appointment of a new board shows that Pope Francis’ claims of a ‘new direction’ for the church were not so much bluster as previously thought. The new directors of the bank are Juan Zarate, a Harvard law professor and former US presidential financial security adviser; Marc Odendall, a financial consultant to Swiss charities; Joseph Yuvaraj Pillay, the former head of the Monetary Authority of Singapore; and Maria Bianca Farina, the head of two Italian insurance companies. Poroshenko will be attending meetings in Brussels and Kiev in the coming weeks, with a view to stabilizing the

The Taliban released a statement saying: ‘Pakistan used peace talks as a tool of war, it killed hundreds of innocent tribal women and children. This is our first attack to avenge the death of Hakimullah Mehsud.’ Pakistan’s defence minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, reacted to the attacks in a statement saying: ‘The state will give a befitting response to such cowardly acts of terror. Those who plan and those who execute the terrorist attacks will be defeated.’ By

Even since President Obama’s re-election in 2012, Ms Clintons supporters within the Democrats has been extremely vocal in expressing its wishes that she run for the office and take the title as the first female US president in history. However, Ms Clinton has neither confirmed nor denied the allegations that she is planning to run for the office and some within the US political system are accusing her of freezing the electorate, as no other candidates from the Democrats have made themselves known as of yet. Analysts and the voting public have said that Ms Clinton has every chance of winning, with support swelling across the US.

Ofsted Trojan Horse schools investigation continues Ofsted chief Michael Wilshaw has claimed that a ‘culture of fear and intimidation has taken grip’ at Birmingham schools that have been caught up in what has been dubbed the ‘Trojan Horse’ investigation into Islamic extremism being taught to schoolchildren. Mr Wilshaw has said that there is evidence of an ‘organised campaign to target certain schools’ by Muslim hardliners, a claim which the leader of one of the schools under investigation has emphatically denied. In their investigation, Ofsted carried out unannounced inspections of 21 schools which have been implicated in the scandal by an anonymous letter, which claimed that hardline Muslims were attempting to impose their beliefs in a group of Birmingham schools. ‘Some of our finding are deeply worrying and, in some ways quite shocking’ was one of the ways Mr Wilshaw described the results of the investigation. So far five schools which have been called ‘Trojan Horse’ schools have been placed under special measures, three of the schools are part of the same trust. A sixth institution has been labelled as inadequate by Ofsted. However, despite prior speculation ahead of the investigation, that all the schools investigated would be in need

In his address to the Commons Mr Gove also reiterated his support of the snap Ofsted inspections and called for those teachers who have been found to have invited extremist speakers into schools to be banned from teaching in the UK. He also accused the Birmingham council of having committed a ‘serious failure’ in protecting the children in their area from extremism. By

Northern English airports Heroin found woven worried about Indy Ref results into rugs in Manchester Airports in the north of England are making their concerns known over Holyroods plans to halve and eventually abolish the Airport Passenger Duty (APD) which is levied on every passenger that flies out of an English or Scottish airport.
Details of a Heroin shipment worth around £5 million, woven into handmade rugs from Pakistan at Manchester Airport were released this week. So far 50kgs of the drug has been found in the carpets with a further 46 carpets currently undergoing testing for the substance. Two men were arrested after the discovery was made by Borders Agency sniffer dogs on in April of this year with details only being released this week. Pete Avery, from the National Crime Agency said: ‘It was a sophisticated concealment and demonstrates the lengths organised crime groups go to in an effort to avoid detection’ By Lauren Black
Northern English airports are concerned that if this measure is taken by a newly independent Scottish government, that they will suffer at the hands of passengers travelling north of the border in order to fly. The tax which is levied on all passengers currently sits at £13 on a short haul flight and £69 on long haul flights. Based on a family of four flying on a long haul flight they could stand to save £276 on their flights by flying from Scotland in the event of independence. Newcastle Airport planning director Graeme Mason said: “Customers are very mobile; they’ll shop around for the cheapest flight and they’ll travel quite long distances to get those flights.” Chief member of Business For Scotland Ivan McKee has said that abolishing APD in Scotland would benefit the north of England as it would force Westminster to invest in the airports in the region. Mr McKee also said: ‘Scotland is doing what it should be doing; we’re bringing ourselves into line with other countries across Europe who have much lower levels of air passenger duty than we currently have.’ A similar situation occurred in Northern Ireland after The Republic of Ireland abolished APD, severely damaging Belfast International Airports profits until APD was abolished in Northern Ireland by the N.I Assembly. Food poverty on the rise, charity report reveals A charity report has revealed that food banks gave out 20 million meals last year to people in need across the UK. The “Below the Breadline” report, published earlier in the week by Oxfam, Church Action on Poverty and The Trussell Trust, believe that changes to the welfare system, low wages, zero-hours contracts and rising food and energy prices have all increased the need for food banks. Last year, more than 20 million meals were given to people across the UK who could not afford to feed themselves, a 54% increase on the previous year. The Scottish Government revealed that the richest 10% in Scotland have 900 times more wealth than the
poorest 10 per cent.
Jamie Livingstone, head of Oxfam Scotland, said “Food banks provide invaluable support for families on the breadline but the fact they are needed in 21st Century Scotland, as across the UK, is a stain on our national conscience. “At a time when politicians tell us that the economy is recovering, too many people need more help to deal with the consequences of stagnating wages, insecure work and rising food and fuel prices. “The UK Government needs to do more to help ensure the poorest and most vulnerable people don’t bear the brunt of turning the economy around. “No-one turns up at a food bank out of choice: it is the lack of options which
www.glasgow-news.com
forces people to use them as a measure of last resort.” Food bank users featured in the report spoke of the struggle living in poverty and depending on food banks. One woman described her situation as, “like living in the 1930s and through rationing”, while another said “I wouldn’t eat for a couple of days, just drink water”. George Kirkpatrick, Chair of the Foodshare, said “Charitable organisations like us either had to intervene and help people in need or stand aside and let people starve. That isn’t a choice. “We hoped this would be a temporary measure but we fear this is being encouraged as the new norm for delivering welfare to the destitute.” By

A day at Roastit Bubbly Jocks “Oh you have a Gin menu” one young gentleman remarks, pointing cheerfully at the specials board. I would consider him a hipster so in my mind its official, Gin is cool again.* We currently stock five with more on the horizon. At Roastits we serve good quality, locally sourced produce always with a side of friendly banter from the staff. We offer a wide range of dishes all with a Scottish influence; including scallops and Stornoway black pudding, Ramsay’s of Carluke pork belly and Argyll game casserole. My personal favourite is our Pan Seared Venison haunch with sweet potato Dauphinoise, which never fails to impress. Saturday nights have a buzz unlike any other night of the week; the music is loud (although sometimes barely audible above the noise of the punters), plates rushing in and out of the kitchen, waiters dancing
around tables and joking with customers.
Sunday morning and given the time of year the door is wide open, people wander in and out lazily till mid afternoon; our regulars with their specific breakfast preferences, couples debating the merits of eggs Benedict versus French Toast and families enjoying a catch up over a relaxing brunch. This chilled out atmosphere continues through lunch and early evening when we receive the usual cries of “do you do a Sunday Roast?” We do indeed; roast beef with all the trimmings is a permanent feature on our market menu (2 courses for £14) includes a homemade Yorkshire Pud! Although the dishes on offer change throughout the day, decent quality scran in a relaxed setting is always on the menu. *I mean no offence Sir, for my sins I too, am a hipster.
Alrighty madskulls, it’s me again having a wee moan and a poke at all things Glasgow and kitchen related. So this weeks creation popped in tae ma heid when I was standing in the queue for Tesco self service , which actually does ma nut in by the way. I mean how hard is it to buy 2 items without the thing having complete melt down, it’s not like I’m planing a trip tae the moon I just want tae buy some jelly! Two beeps later and I’ve got the cashier assistant looking at me like I’m a 80 year old guy trying to work an iPhone, arghhhh gonnae just make it work pal I’m saying in a highly agitated voice, I swear tae god I could actually just chuck ma shopping on the floor in protest and walk straight oot! But I need that jelly, sorry as usual I’m ranting again the point was that I thought about making Buckfast jelly just for the craic. It would be the best antisocial
Last week I had a request from some Facebook punters at The Glasgow Gin Club. They sent me a wee challenge to create some gin sorbet. A challenge it was, first off sorbets are tricky especially with the addition of alcohol and to be honest gin infused sorbet will only appeal to those rare creatures that love gettin smashed on gin and crying their eyes out over issues that will be forgotten in the morning, never the less I rose to the occasion. First off I had to make sure the balance of the gin to sugar had enough kick but at the same time not be too aggressive, although most gin lovers would bite aff ma hand for that. Anyway bang go 8 fresh limes into a nice home made sugar syrup reducing down nicely, the one thing I did that made this sorbet special was ring out a full cucumber for liquid content, so after that bish bash bosh, put everything together added a small amount of gin then strained until crystal clear, into to the mad chef ice cream machine we go and the rest is as they say history!
THE KILLER CLUB... Ingredients: 1 breast of chicken 2 slices of fresh bloomer 1 fresh beef tomato 4 slices to smoked bacon 2 tbs mayonnaise 3 large leafs of iceberg lettuce
Method Pan fry chicken breast until juicy and tender , cook the bacon off in the same pan until crispy, take the beef tomato and slice into medium to thick pieces, wash iceberg and and put three large leafs to the side, proceed to lightly toast bloomer on both sides until golden brown , spread mayo on each slice and place the chicken bacon and tomato on one side topped with the fresh iceberg lettuce finish off with the additional slice of bloomer and hey presto you have a classic simple sandwich ready for consumption ! This is MAD CHEF signing off till next week my friends and remember don’t think about it, JUST DAE IT!

Margaret Curran MP On 4 June, the UK Government delivered the Queen’s Speech which demonstrated yet again how out of touch they really are with the lives of working people. Instead of a plan which would help families up and down the country handle the cost of living crisis, the Government put forward a lacklustre programme that fails to address any of the major issues they should be dealing with.
Where the Government could have introduced a Banking Bill to help small businesses, we heard nothing. And rather than putting forward a Consumers’ Bill to freeze energy prices, the Government showed yet again by their silence that it protects the interests of the energy companies. It is a shame, but it is no wonder people lose faith in politics when they see in their own experience that the Government is failing to act as living standards are declining. This simply isn’t good enough and we won’t stand for the inaction of this Zombie Government any longer.
We in the Labour Party are committed to taking measures to help working families. If we form Government at Westminster in 2015 we would: • Restore the 50p tax for those earning over £150,000 and introduce a 10p tax for low earners
• Provide a jobs guarantee for young people across Scotland who have been unemployed for a year • Freeze gas and electricity bills for Scottish consumers, saving every Scottish household an average of £120 • Ban exploitative zero hours contracts and giving employees more rights to demand fixed hours contracts And Ed Miliband has committed to passing a new Scotland Act to enshrine in law the conclusions of the Scottish Labour Party’s Devolution Commission. At the moment, Scots are being let down by two Governments who have the wrong priorities. We have an SNP Scottish Government that is so obsessed with the referendum that they aren’t doing anything else, and a Tory-led UK Government that has run out of ideas. What we needed to hear was a Queen’s Speech that signalled a change in direction for our country. Come September people across Scotland can say no thanks to separation and then, less than a year from now, elect a Labour Government. For too long, the Government has failed to stand up for hard-working people. It is time this changed. And with a Labour Government in power at Westminster and at Holyrood we can deliver the policies that are deeply needed by people across the country.

www.glasgow-news.com There are two key problems here. We do not have the powers we need and we do not have control of the budget. In some cases we have powers, e.g. over housing, but we only get a fixed amount of money from Westminster. That means we cannot set the spending priorities that the people of Scotland want. Independence would let us decide how we raise and spend our money. In other cases we need the powers to make a difference, e.g. getting rid of the bedroom tax or abolishing nuclear weapons. Instead we could spend that money on more nurses, more colleges and more new housing.
John Mason MSP There are now less than 100 days until the referendum on Scottish independence. Clearly this is the big issue in Scotland at the moment and I suspect the debate will continue to heat up between now and September 18th. I myself have been taking part in a number of public meetings ranging from traditional community halls, schools, churches, and in a couple of recent cases, even prisons. One of the claims of the No campaign team (Labour and the Tories) is that we should be concentrating on jobs, health and housing rather than on the constitution. But you cannot separate these. It is because the constitution is broken that we have too few jobs, a shortage of housing, and not enough to spend on colleges.

£400,000 pounds to say No No No A mystery gambler has placed a huge wager on the outcome of the Scottish Referendum being voted no.
The man placed three separate bets across two days totalling £200,000 pounds, the brave punter stands to win £100,000 pounds on top of his original stake if he’s correct. Bookmaker William Hill have said that the political wager was the largest ever placed, the previous two bets were for £200,000, one on the Scottish Referendum earlier in the week and prior to that someone bet on David Cameron being named leader of the Conservative Party. With the Referendum less than 100 days away and the outcome in no way guaranteed for either camp at the moment, at least one punter is confident of a result. The man from Surrey who placed the wager placed the bet with odds of ¼ on Tuesday using a bankers draft. A spokesman for William Hill Graham Sharpe said “As far as we can ascertain, this is the biggest political bet ever struck.” He continued “ The previous record was a£200,000 bet also struck on a No vote in the Scottish referendum earlier in the campaign, and the same amount was gambled by a customer who backed David Cameron to become Tory leader.” By

Unemployment fallen in Scotland
13th June - 20th June 2014 | Glasgow News 13
Number of young reoffenders falls The number of young people who reoffend once they are released from prison has fallen, and are continuing to.
The amount of people looking for work has fell by 7,000 over three months and now stands at 183,000, according to official figures.
The amount of Scots unemployed (6%) sits with the UK as a whole.
Steve Clark regional director for totaljobs.com in Scotland has said that the Commonwealth Games have played a part in this. However, those who already have a job are apprehensive about starting a new job, due to the unpredictability of the current employment climate. Clark said: “It’s no surprise to see
that unemployment has fallen again in Scotland, with large companies like Esure undertaking major recruitment drives. “With the Commonwealth Games just around the corner, we’re seeing hospitality and leisure companies ramp up their recruitment efforts to ensure they can cater to the hundreds of people visiting Glasgow in July. “However, many people already in work are not yet confident enough to move into a new role. We now need to concentrate on building confidence among candidates to ensure that jobs market remains buoyant.” By
Our aim is to offer those in and around Glasgow a more caring and personal service. We realise options may vary in style and cost, but support and guidance in making those decisions is what we do best. We endeavour to keep costs affordable to all, yet maintaining an extremely dignified and highly professional service for you and your loved ones.

Figures have been released that show fewer than a third of offenders under 25 are convicted again within a year of leaving prison. The findings have come to light as research shows significant falls in the number of offending among young people involved in a youth violence project in Glasgow. The Includem IMPACT project tackles violent and alcohol-related offending by targeting young people to support, helped by Police Scotland. Angela Morgan, chief executive of Includem, said: “In Glasgow, it is widely recognised that there is a substantial group of excluded and challenging young people whose violence, often gang-related, causes significant disruption and
harm in their communities. “Police Scotland is clear that enforcement on its own does not work... The emphasis of Includem’s approach is preventative. “This evaluation will provide all of us with robust evidence about whether Includem IMPACT is making a difference, preventing more harm and worse outcomes for communities as well as potential cost savings for the public purse.” Supt Alick Irvine, of Police Scotland, added: “We are committed to reducing violence across our communities and working alongside capable organisations such as Includem to deal with offending behaviours and preventing crime.” By

CULTURE AND EVENTS GOT: The Watcher’s on the Wall Review Spoi le Alert r !
the choice is yours...
Last week left us wondering about Tyrion Lannister’s and Ser Jorah Mormont’s fates. Sansa Stark’s sudden wardrobe change was left unexplained and so were the Hound’s intentions of what to do with Arya now that her wealthy aunt is deceased. Instead of answering our questions, this week focused solely on events at the Wall. For fans that love battle scenes, this episode is everything they could have wanted and more. It has flaming arrows, giants riding mammoths and the reckless spirit of soldiers fighting for a lost cause. There is even a moment of poignancy
where Jon Snow’s wildling ex-lover Ygritte dies in his arms, uttering her catchphrase “you know nothing Jon Snow”. Yet for those who do not appreciate battle scenes as much would have found the events of this episode dragged out and a distraction from other main characters’ stories. Perhaps it would have been better if its scenes had been broken up by other perspectives, like in other episodes. The deaths of memorable characters might have held more emotional weight if they weren’t surrounded by so much killing and destruction. But then again, it would have left less for the show’s finale next week. By

New Worlds Competition
Blood, power and passion are the key ingredients in New Worlds a gripping historical drama set in the turbulent 1680’s, shown on Channel 4 for the first time last month and released on DVD by RLJ Entertainment last week. This lavish period piece takes place on both sides of the Atlantic during the early days of British colonialism in the Americas under the reign of Charles II. In England, the restored monarchy of King Charles II has betrayed its promises and reverted to tyranny. Behind the decadence of the court a terror machine of torture and executions is repressing the freedoms won for the people during Englands bloody civil war. In America, the tentacles of state terror reach the Colonists but they themselves are ruthlessly staking their Gatewayclaim 2014 to adthe copy.pdf territories21/3/14 occupied 14:05:15 by the
Native Americans, in a chilling echo of the tyranny they seek to escape. Against this turbulent back drop, four young people: Beth, Hope, Abe and Ned, struggle to choose between love and ideals in the harsh reality of the changing world.

Clairvoyant, Columnist & Author Joan Charles
I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries If your looking for a romance to blossom this could be the time that’s right for you to make a move and get it going – if however you are searching for a true love then look out for a chance meeting.
Taurus Surprise news comes from someone quite unexpectedly and there is a connection to the past with this also. I feel you may be looking at things from a black and white; you might need to widen your horizons to see the bigger picture.
Summer Time Readings Courses:
Introduction to the Tarot– The Law of Attraction and Psychic Development courses are on-going, so, check for dates and details.
Readings:
Tarot, Angel, Spiritual, Chakra and Tarumenology [a combination of tarot and numerology]
For details of any of the above contact Joan on mobile: 07930 697 229 or email: joan.charles@btopenworld.com
Gemini At this moment in time you could be feeling that not much is going your way however put a little faith into things changing and it could make all the difference. Burning the candle at both ends will drain your energy and stop you from seeing what is right in front of you.
Cancer It feels as if you are in the middle of the bridge half way to your new destination and leaving the past behind. Things that are worth waiting for take time and so, allow this to take shape in its own good time.
Leo Challenges and limitations are not helping you to make the moves you wanted and this could cause you some frustrations in the mean time. Try to divert your focus onto something that’s a bit more positive.
Virgo Time for reflection is not time lost; this gives you the thinking time you need to see what it is you really want and then to make a plan and go get it. Take yourself off to the movies or do something that will bring a little laughter into your life.
Libra Even though you are generous and are there when you need to be for others it may not always be reciprocated, not that you do it for that reason but when you need others I sense you feel they are other wise engaged.
Scorpio You will need to stand your ground on a matter, which concerns a male and someone who seems to think they can just step in, and dictate to you. I’m sensing the worm has turned and that you are now in the driving seat.
Competition Win a Tarot Reading with Joan Charles We will be running this competition across all of our papers for the month of June so if you want to be in with a chance of winning here is what you need to do.
Sagittarius New lines of communication are open and you will be make the most of them in order to sort a situation out that has been plaguing you for some time. I sense better times ahead all round so keep it up.
Capricorn On one hand I sense that you are not in high spirits and then on the other I see good news coming your way. I am seeing a key and for me this is about discovering something that helps you and also a possible house move too.
Aquarius Better have a nice bottle of something on chill as I’m feeling you are about to enter a new phase in life and one that will challenge you in a whole different way. This is a positive time but one that requires focus.
Pisces As they say, the truth will out and what this means is you are about to uncover something that will provide you with the answers to certain things you have been uncertain about. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
Simply answer this question;
In the Tarot deck what Major Arcana card is number 12? Email your answers to Joan at; joan.charles@btopenworld The winner will be contacted by email and you can either go see Joan for a face-to-face reading or have the reading done on the phone [on a land line] or on Skype.

Motivate & Inspire
Know your
Ten years ago, in 2004, I had been giving some motivational talks, and I met a fellow inspirational speaker for coffee, and he said “Wouldn’t it be great to inspire 10,000 people at once?”
Green Deal The “Green Deal “ is a UK Government initiative designed to help meet the up - front costs of making homes more efficient. As a ‘Green Deal Adviser’ (GDA) I can offer energy saving advice and help to arrange installation of the following.
• Energy efficient boilers with advanced heating controls. • Loft Insulation including top ups. • Cavity wall insulation • Under floor insulation • Low energy lighting • External wall insulation • Solar PV
What is a Green Deal Assessment? In order to get the best advice on how to improve the energy efficiency of your home and save money on your utility bills I create a Green Deal Advice Report (GDAR) however, in order to do this a visit to your property needs to be arranged to complete the two surveys during the Green Deal Assessment. One is known as an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) as well as an Occupancy Assessment (OA). The GDAR uses advanced software to produce recommendations on how you can save money by installing the correct products. Most of the new Government grants, finance and other incentives require you to have a GDAR completed before you apply but this is simple and help with the paperwork will be available to you!
What is an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)? Domestic appliances have been carrying energy ratings for years those colourful banded charts that
rate energy efficiency from A to G, with A being the most efficient. All new homes and homes being sold or let must now be assessed to find out how efficient they are. A second chart shows your homes environmental impact in terms of its carbon emissions. The EPC will contain a report of what you can do to reduce your homes energy use and carbon emissions, and a “potential” rating to show what rating it could be if the recommendations of improvements were carried out. The report also shows potential costs with and without improvements being carried out.
As a Green Deal Advisor (GDA) I would be looking at what insulation the home has as well as the heating system, hot water system, radiators, windows, ventilation, light bulbs and if renewable are present.
Government approved software is used on a to generate appropriate recommendations and produce your unique GDAR in your home. Depending on what products are recommended You can be advised on the range of funding and finance options that are available to cover the upfront costs of the energy saving measures. The Government has asked that Green Deal Advisors follow a strict code of conduct to produce accurate and impartial Green Deal Advice Reports. That means we work with only Green Deal Approved Installers and Green Deal Providers. To receive the full funding available you must use approved providers and installers who meet the “Green Deal” standard. I am an expert in transforming poorly rated homes, which cost a lot of money to heat into a high rated super, efficient home.
This assessment will take into account the age and size of the property as well as the position.
If you are interested in future proofing your home as well as lowering your utility bills
After the EPC has been carried out and calculated an Occupancy Assessment (OA) is done and this is designed to show homeowners how they can improve the energy efficiency of the home, which will then reduce the bills. This information will be unique to each homeowner.
I am happy to offer a free “Green Deal” assessment worth £150 to all readers*.
How can I access Green Deal Finance or Grants?
For more details please call Gemma Collins on 07790 031010
The first step would be to arrange a convenient time to survey the property, which takes approximately 1 - 2 hours depending on the size of your home. To make the assessment as accurate as possible you will need to have copies of your utility ready so that you I can be shown just you how much you could save.
I look forward to showing you how to save money, add value to your home and improve your overall comfort of your home.
*All properties will have a pre-assessment before a Green Deal Assessment is deemed appropriate. Flats are excluded and this offer can be withdrawn at anytime.
And instead of leaning over, patting him on the back, and wishing him luck, I enthusiastically threw my arms in the air and yelled, “Let’s Do it!” That one decision changed my life!
And so I hired the only conference centre in Scotland that could host 10,000 people, The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) armadillo in Glasgow.
The admin staff at the SECC were quite incredulous and asked if I was sure that I wanted to do that as even Kylie Minogue only hired their 3,000 seater venue. I grinned (forever optimistic) and proclaimed that I wanted to Go Large!
So I signed a six-figure rental agreement, and I committed to renting the whole venue including breakout rooms, for three days. I had MASSIVE plans, and I effectively created three events including evening Ceilidh function with our guest speakers. I meticulously planned this event and it became my 24 hour obsession, and I chose to all-but shut down my successful financial advisory business, believing that all of my clients knew where I was and how to contact me, and trusting that they would call me if they needed me... WRONG!
That experience proved to me; that if you want to succeed, you’ve got to be Proactive, not Reactive. “Successful people keep moving!”
It was only then that it occurred to me that I did not know 10,000 people, so how was I going to fill 10,000 seats? My answer was “leverage”, and I decided that the most effective leverage would be the Internet.
So to cut a long story short; I DID make the event happen. Despite my friend disappearing off the radar & leaving it all up to me to bring to fruition, I brought in amazing speakers including the currently very popular “JuiceMaster” Jason Vale, and Sir Bob Geldof heard about it and also wanted to get involved.
On the day, I had a fantastic team of (volunteer) experts running the show, and despite three feet of unexpected snow, the attendees enjoyed a mindblowing, and life-changing weekend. Financially I messed up massively and the whole project financially devastated me, and took me to the edge literally. I ended up having to sell my house, my lovely car. I lost my girlfriend, my assets and all of my substantial savings, and I very nearly pulled the plug on life itself, believing that people would understand. Well they say “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”
My mother helped me out by purchasing a campervan for me... and unfortunately within 300 miles, the engine blew up, and another nine months and £5000 more expense later, we ended up having a brand-new engine fitted to my 20-yearold van.
And so with nothing left to lose, I began my next adventure. Touring 21 countries in my campervan with my dog. I took over 250,000 photos and enjoyed the experience of a lifetime that many people dream about, but few have the courage to go out there and make into a reality. One of the biggest drivers for me wanting to host the Inspire Scotland events in 2006 was to highlight one of my own observations. I had observed that most of the statues that stand silently proud in our city centres are approximately 100 to 200 years old. Most of us go about our business, blissfully ignorant of who these people were, or why they are being honoured. And what of today? Who would we honour today with a statue?
What occurred to me, was that the Brits in general, and Scots in particular, were responsible for so many of the changes in society and luxuries that today we take for granted;
Penicillin, Radar, TV, Radio, WellyBoots, Road-Surfacing (Tar Macadam), and even in the world’s first Billionaire was a Scotsman! (Andrew Carnegie). So what has happened in the 100+ years since all those statues were erected? Where are our outstanding pioneers of today?
Actually I believe that we have a phenomenon amount of talent here in Scotland, but we have been so indoctrinated by our leaders, carers, guardians, teachers and parents to stay humble and not show off. This Calvinistic trait has now been taken too far in my opinion, and whilst a touch of humility is a nice trait to witness, the net result of dampening a person’s selfconfidence is actually devastating!
In my experience, we have so much talent and innovation here in Scotland compared to most other countries in the world, that I believe we have the right to be shouting about it from the rooftops, and enjoying our God-given right to the massive Abundance that is the natural flow of positive energy all around us. So praise your children and Grandchildren, become aware of the effect of the words you use, and focus on raising the self-confidence and self-worth of everyone you communicate with.
We all have smiles and positive vibrations that we can tap into any time we want, regardless of what else is going on in our world. Just like smiling; you can share the positivity with everyone you see, and instead of worrying that you’ll run out of smiles, you’ll find that the Law of Attraction rewards you with even more reasons to smile, and oodles of smiles, abundance and positivity to share with the world. Nicole Kidman stars in the real-life fairytale of an actress who had to choose between Hollywood and being a princess. It’s 1962, six years after Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Grace Kelly (Nicole Kidman) married Prince Rainier III of Monaco (Tim Roth). Now Grace yearns to respond to the overtures of Alfred Hitchcock (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) and return to film-making. But being a mother of two and monarch of a small European principality makes this a challenge. Fate intervenes when France seeks to regain Monaco by force, plunging the country into turmoil. Now Grace is forced to make the biggest decision of her life. She can either be an international movie star or recognise her obligation to her husband and adopted country - and accept that she will never act again. From Olivier Dahan, director of the Oscar-winning ‘La Vie en Rose’, this is a powerful blend of sweeping romance and personal and political crisis.
Oculus Now booking Karen Gillan makes her horror debut in the spine-chilling tale of a woman who tries to prove that her parents were killed by a supernatural force. Ever since his parents met a violent end more than a decade ago, Tim Russell (Brenton Thwaites) has been detailed in a mental institution. At 21, he’s declared fit for release, having conquered the delusions that plagued him. But Tim’s sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan) remains convinced that an evil spirit residing within an ornate antique mirror was responsible for the deaths. Now she’s determined to recruit Tim to help her document the mirror’s evil powers before destroying it for good. Little do the siblings realise the terror they are unleashing. From the producer of ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Insidious’, this is a clever, satisfying and genuinely scary horror movie. Former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan shows off her American accent in her first major Hollywood role.

Alan Ayckbourn’s award-winning satire on greed and corruption makes a triumphant return to the NT. Jack McCracken is a man of probity in an increasingly dishonest world. Now he has the chance to put his principles into practice. He’s just taken over the family furniture business. At a celebratory party, Jack delivers an inspiring speech about the importance of integrity. But then he’s approached by a private detective bearing compromising information. Before long, Jack learns that his entire extended family are greedy, adulterous crooks, happily bleeding the firm dry! As he too becomes tainted by their misdeeds, he’s locked into an increasingly hysterical downward spiral from industrial espionage to drug-dealing and murder! Olivier Award-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn’s blackly comic morality play brilliantly satirised the ‘greed is good’ decade and won the 1987 Evening Standard Award for Best Play.

Brendan O’Carroll’s brilliant comic creation defends her market stall from a nasty developer in her hilarious bigscreen debut. Feisty matriarch Agnes Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) runs a fruit and vegetable stall in Dublin’s historic Moore Street Market. It’s been in her family for generations and she hopes eventually to pass it to daughter Cathy (Jennifer Gibney). Then she receives a vast tax bill. Maria (Fiona O’Carroll) and Rory (Rory Cowan) embark on a foolhardy plan to raise the cash by swimming the channel. Meanwhile, our potty-mouthed heroine learns that she’s not the only one to have her livelihood and heritage threatened. A dastardly developer wants to bulldoze the entire market. Now Agnes must take on the Irish establishment - with a little help from Buster Brady’s troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourette’s Syndrome!

A moving, witty and life-affirming adaptation of John Green’s bestselling novel about two teenagers who fall in love at a cancer support group. Sixteenyear-old Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. She carries an oxygen tank everywhere and prefers not to sugarcoat the reality of her situation. Her concerned mother (Laura Dern) encourages her to attend a cancer support group and make friends. She makes an instant connection with funny and charming Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), who has a prosthetic leg and has been in remission for 18 months. Clear-eyed Hazel fears that this cannot end well, but is unable to stop herself falling for Gus. The adaptation that millions of fans have been waiting for, this is a funny, honest and heart-breaking tear-jerker. Rising stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were recently seen on screen together in the sci-fi hit ‘Divergent’.

W
ith the World Cup taking over much of the television schedules for the next couple of weeks, this little gem nestled within it is a welcome distraction for the animal lovers amongst us.

Ted Danson CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Channel 5, 9pm Cheers veterans Ted Danson and John Ratzenberger are back together for the latest helping of this slick forensic drama. The plot centres on an inferno at struggling music venue the Lockjaw Club. Controversial hardcore band White Rising were playing on the night several people died at the club. Clearly some of the deaths were intentional as one of the victims had been strangled before the fire and left on the dance floor, and the door to the only other exit had been blocked by a car. It begs the questions: who wanted the clubbers dead, and why?

Leona Benefits Britain: Life on the Dole Channel 5, 9pm It’s been a hot topic for a while, and there’s almost been as much coverage on this subject recently as there has been on the World Cup. Well okay, maybe not quite that much. Figures suggest that there are more people living off benefits now than at any time since the foundation of the welfare state. Some put this down to factors such as immigration, lack of jobs, and, controversially, laziness. But can we really be so judgemental until we understand the circumstances of those who rely on the state? This series aims to give us an insight into the lives of claimants.

4 ways to get active this summer – ditch the gym! Fitting exercise around your daily schedule can be tricky, especially when school runs, food shopping and housework seem to take up most of your time. Not to worry, we’ve listed four ways to boost your activity levels through subtle changes to your habits that won’t require a whole lot of planning. Before you know it, you’ll be going on autopilot! By Matleena Salminen
Don’t underestimate the power of walking
Do a lunch hour fitness class
Tired of sitting in the traffic jam for hours every day? Prone to getting headaches after staring at a screen all day long? Why not try to squeeze some walking into your day-to-day life – maybe walk to the shop or, if you live close enough, walk to work instead of driving. Or catch up with friends in the park. You will get a healthy dose of fresh air and maybe even break sweat.
If your evenings are fully booked with family commitments and you don’t fancy getting up at a ridiculous o’clock, maybe a lunch hour fitness class would be ideal for you. Most gyms and health centres offer a wide range of fitness classes, some of which run during lunch breaks. No need to be a fully-fledged member in most cases, likes of Glasgow Club offer affordable pay as you go memberships and there are plenty of independent gyms with drop-in classes. You’ll feel energised and de-stressed, ready to tackle whatever’s next on your schedule.
Grab the kids and go explore Fallen into a habit of collectively lying in front of the telly all weekend? How about a picnic in the park after a bike race? An adventure to the city centre or to Loch Lomond? Maybe go camping, or on a day trip? It doesn’t have to be big, fancy or expensive. Sometimes just spending time together and marvelling at the sights of the city is an experience in itself. Become a tourist for the day! You’ll be active, provide the kids with precious memories and have something interesting to tell your co-workers on Monday!
Sign up for a race The best way to get moving is to make a goal and take up the challenge. Never been big into running? How about signing up for an autumn 5K race and start combining your daily walking with a short run every week? In no time at all, you’ll be addicted to the endorphin high and start to see the results. There are plenty of apps around to help you stay motivated and focused. So why not get yourself a bright new top and start your training today?
Smart Girls Guide to... Reducing Waste
With Scotland throwing away 566,000 tonnes of waste from our homes every year, we chuck out more than a third of the food we buy. Leftovers don’t need to be boring, and spending less money on your boring supermarket shop means you can spend a bit more on some luxuries at the weekend... like wine or chocolates! And let’s face it, I bet they won’t go to waste!
Get the best out of your fruit & veg
Where we store our fruit and vegetables makes
a big difference on how long they will last. Keep fruit and vegetables in the drawers at the bottom (in their original packaging or a loosely tied bag) - the exceptions are onions, potatoes, bananas and whole pineapple should be left out the fridge, in a cool, dry place.
Bulk up your leftovers
If you have some pasta or stew left over that isn’t enough for the next day, don’t throw it away! Adding chickpeas, pulses, kidney beans will bulk it up. Serve with some bread and you have a yummy, filling meal. If you have plain couscous left over, use next day mixed with
chopped cucumber, tomatoes and herbs for a cheap lunch at work
Freeze it!
A common reason for throwing something away is because it is past its expiry date or gone mouldy or stale. If you buy in bulk or don’t have many people in your household, freeze food and bring it out when you need it. Bread can be frozen and left out the night before, or toasted straight from frozen. Grated cheese can also be used straight from the freezer. Frozen vegetables are great too, because you only need to use what you need!

the next day.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Tuesday after a member of the public spotted the young felines at Bartiebeith Road.
“This was a very cruel act and we’re keen to find the person responsible for dumping them.
The kittens, two boys and two girls, are now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s Dunbartonshire and West Scotland Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Milton, where they have been named Peter, Parker, Pippa and Polly.
“The kittens were terrified but are in good health and are receiving all the care and attention they need at our centre.
“If anyone has any information we’d urge them to call our animal helpline as soon as possible. In the meantime we’ll be looking to find the kittens loving new homes.”
Animal Rescue Officer Stephanie Bain said, “These poor wee kittens were left at the back of a block of flats inside a cardboard box.
Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
“One of the residents thankfully spotted them when he was putting his bin out and gave them a safe home for the night until I collected them
Anyone with information about the kittens is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

PROPERTY Top tips on how to make a rented property your own!
£50,000 of property recovered after house thefts Around £50,000 worth of property has been recovered by police after a series of thefts. A 28-year-old man has been connected to the incidents. The arrest follows a series of breakins across the Perth and Kinross and Forth Valley areas. Detective inspector Andy Patrick, who leads Perth CID said: “Housebreaking has a devastating impact on victims and our local communities. “Across Tayside, we are dedicated to identifying those responsible and will continue to carry out robust enforcement activity. “I want these individuals to be in no doubt that housebreaking in Perth and Kinross will not be tolerated. If you are found to be involved in crimes of this nature you will be caught and you will face criminal proceedings.
www.glasgow-news.com
“I want to reassure communities that we have dedicated resources in place to thoroughly investigate all reports of housebreaking and I would ask residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police”. DC Gary Lamb, from Perth Community Investigation Unit, added: “The public have an important part to play in ensuring the success of policing operations by helping us prevent acquisitive crime from occurring. “I would ask that householders consider their current security measures to make sure they are adequate. Especially consider where vehicle and house keys are stored within your homes at night”. For further information on crime prevention please contact Police Scotland on 101.

When you are renting a flat or a house, it can be difficult to ‘make a house a home’ when landlords put restrictions on what you can and cannot do. Here is our guide on how to personalise your home – no painting required!
Accessorise!
You don’t need to paint the walls to have a colour scheme. Pick a colour and buy accessories such as candles, cushions, table runners and curtains. Lighting can change the atmosphere completely, so buy some lamps and fairy lights for a more relaxed feel. Don’t be afraid to swap the light shades too. Just be careful to put them in a safe place to put back up when you move!
Personalise!
Adding photo frames and trinkets from your travels will instantly make you feel like home. A vase of flowers and scented candles will make the place more homely. Canvas frames
are great for brightening up a plain wall. They are cheap enough to pick up in stores such as B&M or Poundstretcher. Check with your landlord if they will allow you to put nails and fixtures on the walls!
Customise!
If it is a furnished flat, try changing the furniture around. Moving the sofa
or the bed will make a big difference. Throws for the couches will change them instantly, and rugs are great if you have wooden floors but prefer carpets. Buy sticker tiles for the kitchen and bathroom, but make sure they can peel off again! By

Citizens Theatre gets a makeover Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre, which opened its doors in 1878 is set for a revamp after securing lottery funding of nearly £5million pounds. With the lottery funding it is expected that whilst respecting the long history, the money will help bring the theatre up to 21st century standard. Second oldest only to Leeds Grand, (which opened six weeks previous to it), the Citizens Theatre is one of the most well known theatres throughout Britain. A Grade B listed building, the Citizens
(or “Citz”) is the only theatre in Scotland to still have its machinery reside underneath the stage. The theatre which has welcomed legendary actors such as Stanley Baxter, Rupert Everett, and more modern actors such as Alan Rickman whilst the theatre helped launch the career of Gary Oldman. The upcoming refurbishment will be the grandest refurbishment in the Citizen’s illustrious 135 year history. Since 1945 the theatre has been home to the Citizens Theatre Company who have sought to bring theatre and performance to the everyone, to enhance their life through theatre, a direct quote from
PROPERTY
www.citz.co.uk explains “Our ambition is to continue to provide unique cultural experiences that bring lasting benefit to everyone involved.”
to transform the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon back to the high standard it was originally presented in.
With its expansive history the Citizen’s Theatre has witnessed everything from an angry elephant which incited a riot, to the rumours of ghosts that haunt its very corridors, the Citizen’s is at the very heart of the Gorbals community. A regenerated Gorbals would be nothing without a regenerated Citizens.
With the money that the National Lottery have promised to provide it will present the Citizens Theatre to future generations as a community and national theatre to be proud of.
The company chosen to bring the old lady of theatre back to its pristine best are Bennetts Associates. Recently showered with awards and plaudits for the sterling work they performed
Colin McLean head of the Heritage Lottery Fund said “The Citizens Theatre is held in great affection in Glasgow and far beyond although I don’t think anyone would disagree that it has seen better days. “We are delighted to give our initial support to a project which will bring
those better days back.” The new “Citz” will be completely revamped, upgrading the Victorian auditorium, installing a new foyer and transforming the exterior, as well as demolishing some of the 20th century additions that are no longer used or fit for purpose. Bennetts Associates entrusted with the redevelopment of the building have promised to respect the heritage of the building, whilst bringing the façade and development straight into the 21st century. Redevelopment starts in 2016.

New 5 door MINI, mini in name only This week, BMW MINI announced the latest addition to the MINI family with the brand’s first foray into five door hatch territory with the new MINI 5-door hatch with an OTR price starting at £15,900. This latest offering sports the revamped for 2014 styling of the 3-door with additional practicality in the form of another set of doors and for the first time a third seat in the rear. This latest incarnation is one of the largest cars the Oxford produced, coming in at just 2cm short of 4 meters (13ft) long and 1.7 meters (5’ 6’’) wide the MINI 5-door is now almost identical in dimensions to the latest Golf, the segment leader which no doubt MINI will be aiming for after the cars release in August of this year. However, there are a lot more interesting things to talk about in regards to this car than its size, the list of tech detailed in the pre release specs is impressive to say the least, most of all the gearboxes and engines. The 5-door will be offered at release with a choice of four engines, two petrol and two
diesel. Both petrol and derv choices come in either three or four cylinder flavour and all of which will be backed up by twin turbos.
and crisp gear changes in addition to a new rev matching feature on the downshift.
The new range of engines promise mpg figures north of 60 on all variants with the diesels offering upwards of 69mpg. These rather interesting little engines are coupled to a pair of what on paper at least are a pair of gearboxes perfectly suited to the new model. The new engines will be paired up to either a six speed manual or automatic, the manual will be standard BMW fare with fantastic feel

The standard MINI’s will be powered by either a three cylinder tt petrol engine producing 136bhp or a diesel three cylinder tt putting out 116bhp and most likely with a bigger dollop of torque added into the mix to make up for the lower bhp rating. The S and SD models will naturally enough be powered by some larger four cylinders, with the petrol producing 192bhp and the all new SD model being powered by a 170bhp and 320nm 2.0l oil burner, producing more torque than any previous MINI power plant, a fact that BMW seems to be extremely proud of.

to be well equipped with everything one would expect from a family hatch, including
the usual things such as USB and Bluetooth
connectivity, trip computer and air con. The auto boxes are much more fascinating, with six gears in a car mainly aimed at city driving there’s always a risk of the box eternally shifting, BMW MINI has overcome this with some trick computer wizardry by pairing the gearbox up to the oboard navigation system which will analyze the route ahead and the traffic conditions, selecting the gears it needs to keep the engine at its most efficient. Along side this, the driver can manually select gears through the use of a flappy paddle arrangement for those times when a little more involvement in the gear selection process is needed. It can be assumed that the majority of future

DVSA to scrap Vehicle Identity Checks This week the DVSA announced that it is scrapping Vehicle Identity Checks (VIC) for written off cars returning to the road from October 2015, citing the scheme which was introduced in 2003 as a failure. The checks which were originally intended to prevent car theft rings
from registering stolen cars under false credentials taken from write offs are being discontinued due to the miniscule number of cars discovered with false credentials and the cost to motorists wishing to re-register written off vehicles. Transport Minister Stephen Hammond
said in a statement: ‘It’s clear the scheme isn’t doing its job and it is hitting honest motorists in the wallet. The VIC scheme is nothing more than unnecessary red tape, which is why we are getting rid of it.’ The checks which were paid for by the owner of the vehicle cost £41 per
car and required a DVSA agent to inspect the vehicle in question before approving its registration. This is great news for those of us trying to get a bargain on a lightly damaged write off and re-registering it for the road. By

All eyes will be to the skies above the North of Glasgow this Sunday as the City’s speedway club look to get back on track having suffered yet more rain postponed fixtures in recent weeks. It will be a hectic weekend for the Allied Vehicles Tigers who face home and away Knock Out Cup ties – themselves rescheduled following an earlier postponement - against Hertfordshire based Rye House Rockets. Tigers travel South this Saturday to a circuit they don’t have a particularly good record on, however will need to target a strong performance in order to keep the
scoreline close before both sides travel back to Glasgow to conclude the first round cup tie the following day at Ashfield. Allowing for the overnight travel back to Glasgow, the club have pushed back start time this Sunday afternoon to 5pm. Tigers have recently strengthened by the signing of Aussie Christian Henry, and they must look to points scoring contributions from each of the riders to help ensure that the cup dream remains alive before the sides head North. One possible key rider in the Glasgow club’s ranks is Danish starlet Kasper Lykke who is a former Rye House rider, his experience of
the Hertfordshire circuit may prove invaluable. The Tigers are now not expecting to welcome back their teenage French star Dimitri Berge in time to compete this weekend. Berge, who was hospitalised following a bad crash at Ashfield at the end April, is close to making his racing return for the Tigers having completed his recuperation at home in France. Tigers fans will hope that Berge will line up again next weekend as the Tigers head to defending league champions Somerset before returning to face a strong Ipswich side at Ashfield.
Championship set for attendance bonanza Teams in the Scottish Championship could be looking at an attendance and financial windfall next season after reports of vastly increased season ticket sales. With the promise of both Edinburgh clubs and a newly promoted Rangers to whet the whistle some are even saying that average attendances could be higher in the Championship in comparison to the attendances in the Scottish Premiership. Football financial expert Neil Patey spoke of the exciting times ahead for the second tier of Scottish football,
thanks to the pulling power of the Edinburgh clubs and the financially troubled Ibrox giants. Mr Patey said “It’s entirely conceivable attendances in total will be up between 50% percent to 100% percent, for the bulk of the clubs. The biggest single revenue for Scottish football is ticket sales.”
With revenue in Scotland being vastly inferior to England’s (£70 million for getting relegated from English Premiership, £3 million for winning Scottish). Any bonus in revenue for Scottish
teams can only be seen as beneficial and will help the long term goals of reintroducing grass routes football and promoting Scottish youth players and traiing them to have the potential to be world class. The average Championship club could look forward to a financial bonus of anywhere upwards of £300,000 to £400,000 next season thanks to the teams in the league. Nearly every team in the Championship have begun to install hundreds of new seats to try and meet the expected increase in demand.
AGAINST ALL ODDS Well it’s here, it’s arrived, it’s for the first time in four years men around the globe will stop playing Fifa on their Playstations. Brazil 2014, The World Cup, the male equivalent of the Eastenders omnibus on a Sunday. With over 100’s of markets available to wager on, I’ve seeked out some value bets for you. Starting with The Fair Play award, it’s safe to say Uruguay won’t be in the running for that one, Spain are the favourites at 11/2 and rightly so, with an almost unblemished record throughout the qualifiers, expect that to carry on. Having backed Aguero to be tournament top goalscorer at 14/1 , I think the 5/1 about him being top Premier league goalscorer is too good to miss also. One of the emerging nations in recent years has been Australia, I think they are a great value bet (at small stakes) to reach the quarter finals at odds of 40/1 (or 125/1 if you think they will make the Semi’s) Angel Di Maria is the unsung hero of Real Madrid, in my opinion was Man of the Match in the Champions league final and I fancy him to be player of the tournament in a strong Argentinian side, currently trading at 40/1 Singles: Aguero - Top Premier league goalscorer 5/1, Australia to make the quarter finals 40/1 By DD Angel Di Maria player of the tournament 40/1

World Cup
Fever! With the World Cup 2014 under way, its time to look forward to some of the most anticipated games of the group stages, unfolding during the next week of the tournament. The group stages of the tournament will take place from the 12th to the 28th of June. By Gregg Kelly
First up, tournament hosts of the World Cup, Brazil are opening the tournament against Croatia and five time winners(more than any other team) will fancy their chances in the opening game, with the home crowd supporting them. If coach Scolari manages to get Neymar performing on the big stage expect it to be a long night for the Croats. However if Brazil don’t start well and Croatia create a few chances expect the home crowd to start putting pressure on Brazil. Friday the 13th will see two of the
favourites for the World Cup draw swords and do battle. Current World Champions Spain and perennial under achievers Netherlands will square up against each other in a repeat of the final of the previous World Cup in South Africa. Expect fireworks and passion, be surprised if both teams have 11 men on the pitch at the end of the match. Currently Netherlands have the unfortunate award of having appeared in more World Cup finals than anyone else without ever winning it. Saturday 14th June sees England kick off their campaign with an extremely hard match against 2006 World Champions and four time winners Italy, expect it to be a tense affair but
with the hysteria that will inevitably surround the England team be glad they have a stronger sense of where they stand as a football team. Strong possibility of few goals during the game, possibly even a drab draw. Daniel Sturridge had a fantastic season at Liverpool and if he is given the same free role in the England team as he is in the Liverpool pitch, could be the key to unlocking the notoriously stingy Italian defence. Monday 16th June sees Germany kick off their campaign against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal side, however the Real Madrid star is still a major doubt alongside his team-mate Pepe, both are a serious doubt for Portugal’s opening game. With a country that
alongside Netherlands have an aura of underachievers and perpetual infighting, the Portugal fans will expect results. Germany on the other hand are going through a resurgence in their domestic game and are constantly in the running to win every tournament they enter. Germany however are caught between the two styles of their main domestic teams, style of football, Bayern Munich under coach Pep Guardiola play possession football and Borrusia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp play quick counter attack. Marry the two styles successfully and Germany could be the team to watch.
Belgium vs Algeria. On paper the Belgium squad in domestic transfers are the third most expensive team in the world and are considered by many to be hitting the peak of their abilities. Starting the competition as sixth favourites they will be looking to emulate or rise above their greatest finish of fourth in the 1986 World Cup. With the squad being valued at more than £200 million pounds can they put their bulging bank balances aside and play as a unit? Only time will tell.
Finally the last of the pick of the first round of matches is Tues 17th June
Until the next round of matches. Gaaaaaaaaame On.
As any sporting fan will know, on any given day you can win lose or draw.

Rangers in fresh financial crisis
Rangers Chief Executive Graham Wallace has confirmed that Rangers will be looking to offer fans the chance to invest in a share issue to help stave off another financial crisis.
meet representatives of Blue Pitch Holdings and Margarita Holdings for immediate consultation as the fan boycott starts to coil around the hated boardrooms neck.
This comes just days after Sandy and James Easdale were pictured at London City Airport on the way to an investment meeting in regards to the financial shortfall Rangers face in the foreseeable future due to the ongoing fans boycott of season tickets.
The answer given back to the Easdale brothers was to announce the possibility of a share issue, which could be conducted within the next two weeks. However, it is still to be seen whether fans being led by former Rangers director Dave King will simply boycott this boardroom financial escape clause as well.
The brothers travelled to London to
Shareholders will be hoping to raise
in the region of £8 million pounds with the rights issue. Although shareholders have yet to confirm whether the fan boycott is having an effect on financial stability within the club, it would only take an educated guess to work out that if the club need an £8million pounds share issue, the boycott, however minimal, is having a desired effect. More worryingly for Rangers fans is the push for the title next season, with Hearts and Hibs both having strong squads, new managers and a hunger to see themselves promoted

rough season in the Championship.
Hearts have recently left administration, have a strong young squad and the Hibs board are looking to appease a disgruntled fanbase with Rod Petrie apparently circling John Collins an ex Hibs favourite. Rangers don’t have their ills to seek at the moment.
Graham Wallace had this to say when asked about a new share issue in April “We do have options, including a rights issue, that, if we were to find that the business was not being supported to the level of season ticket renewals that we would hope, that if it got to the point where there was an issue, we have options. Am I confident that the business can survive and not go into administration? I repeat what I said before: Yes I am.”
With Graham Wallace promising new players for Ally Mccoist, fans will be wondering where the money will appear from, and if the best the board can offer is a past his prime Kenny Miller. Rangers are in for a
