Apology over A&E patients sleeping overnight on trolleys Extended 80’s Competition
The NHS have sent out letters to patients who had to spend the night sleeping on trolleys at a Glasgow Accident and Emergency ward. By
The incident, which was caused by a shortage of beds and a 24% increase in admissions, occurred last week at the Victoria Infirmary. The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GGC) have said the rise in admissions caused a number of “unacceptable lengths of stay for some patients”.

Health chiefs were forced to transfer 15 emergency referrals to other hospitals in the city and cancel “17 no-urgent” routine operations. The BBC has been told the Victoria Infirmary even ran out of blankets and pillows and 50 patients were found care home placements to free up beds. Robert Calderwood, NHS GCC chief executive, said: “I would like

“The demands that we have been experiencing are unprecedented for this time of year and I would like to pay tribute to my clinical colleagues in all our hospitals who have been working tirelessly to respond to this challenge.
“I also wish to apologise to those patients who have had the inconvenience of having their planned admission postponed. All patients affected will be re-booked quickly and given as early alternative admission date that suits.

“Health services have been a key part of the intensive multi-agency planning for the Commonwealth Games this summer and we are fully confident of our ability to respond to any eventuality should we be required to do so.” This comes after it was revealed last month that A&E departments across Scotland were still failing to meet a target to treat most people within four hours.

veryone’s gone football crazy, they’re football mad – and if you’ve managed to escape the sport so far, brace yourself, because you’re going to run into it very soon indeed. That’s because for the next month or so, both the BBC and ITV will be broadcasting the World Cup from Brazil, the sport’s biggest and most prestigious competition. And although British hopes rest fairly and squarely on an unfancied England side, you can bet your bottom dollar that the nation will still be gripped to the screen. Perhaps the men in white will do better in Soccer Aid 2014 (Sunday, ITV, 6pm), which has

"Thanks to UNICEF for asking me to manage the Rest of the World at Soccer Aid on Sunday June 8 at Old Trafford", said Mourinho when his participation was announced. "I'm looking forward to beating Robbie Williams' and Big Sam’s England team and raising money for UNICEF.” England are leading in the head-to-head so far, having been beaten just once, in 2010, on penalties. That match raised almost £3million, while last year’s raised a record £4.9million – which is
pretty good going in austerity Britain. But can the figure be beaten this time around? The fact that the UK Government will be matching the donations made by the public should certainly help. We’ll have to wait and see… Now 40, Robbie has hung up his boots and is acting as assistant manager this time around. "Soccer Aid returns for the fifth time in June and I admit there are scores to settle," says the Robster. "Leading the England team, I will be making sure we defend that trophy against Rest of the World. There’s never been a better time for us to show our support for UNICEF.”

been taking place every two years since 2006. It’s the brainchild of Unicef ambassador Robbie Williams, and while he might not be everybody’s favourite performer, you’ve got to admit that this is a cracking idea. The idea is simple: an all-star England team made up of 12 celebrities and six legendary exprofessionals (one of which must be a goalkeeper) take on a Rest of the World XI. Both teams are coached by well-known managers, with West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce taking charge of England this time, and Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho leading the Rest of the World.
CHOICE
Britain’s Got Talent: Live Final ITV, 7pm After weeks of tough auditions and five fiercely competitive semi-finals, the national talent search comes to a close as the remaining contestants perform one last time. The hopefuls all have one simple aim – to win a coveted slot at this year’s Royal Variety Performance and get their hands on the £250,000 cash prize. All they have to do is impress the voting public, as the opinions of judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon count for nothing – who wins is entirely down to the viewers at home.

Police appeal for The Big G is unveiled... information after woman is sexually assualted in Kelvingrove Park.
But first, let me take a selfie!
An investigation into a sexual assault that carried out in a Glasgow park is underway.
Police hunt for women who robbed pensioner
Officers said they want to speak to anyone who may have seen the attack on a 35-year-old woman in Kelvingrove Park at about 9:45pm last Friday. The woman did not need hospital assistance but was left very upset by the incident. Det Insp Douglas Robertson said: “We are carrying out extensive enquiries including viewing CCTV in order to trace the man responsible for this assault. “At this time, I would like to reassure the public that there is nothing to suggest that this incident is linked to any other sexual assault. There are additional officers carrying out high visibility patrols in the area and anyone with concerns should speak to an officer. “I would like to appeal to anyone who
was in or near Kelvingrove Park on Friday night between 2100 and 2200 hours to get in touch, particularly anyone who saw a man similar to the description issued.” The suspect has been desribed as having a tanned, Mediterranean or Asian complexion, 35-45 years old, about 5’7” tall and is overweight. Anyone with information can contact the police on their 101 number, or speak anonymously to Crimestoppers. By

Man arrested after brandishing a knife in City Chambers A man has been arrested after allegedly walking into Glasgow City Chambers in possession of a knife. Around Monday at 4:15 a man was seen in the City Chambers on George Square holding a knife after a member of staff had noticed the 29 year was carrying a knife. He was subsequently arrested after police investigated the claim and found the 29 year old to be in possession of the offending item. A Police Scotland spokesman said “At around 4:15pm officers were called to a disturbance at the City Chambers and a 29-year-old male was arrested. The male was in possession of a knife.” In Scotland the maximum jail time you can receive for possession of a knife is four years currently although five years is under consideration after the Scottish Government vowed to end Scotland’s lust for knife culture. It has been warned however that simply applying custodial sentences to knife
crime will do nothing to stop the reason behind the carrying of knives. The Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research said “Evidently, education has an essential role in assuring young people that carrying knives is unnecessary. Indeed, it may be the only way in which fears can be addressed, and the only way in which knife related crime can be reduced amongst those who perpetrate it as a result of fear.” With new figures showing that violent crime has been steadily falling in Scotland experts and politicians are arguing that increased stop and searches by the police are showing a direct result. Although the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) said it could find “no casual link” between the two. Last year there were more than 640,000 searches carried out from the previous March, nearly three times as many as were carried out in London, 1,800 a day in Scotland.
The Big G, the spectacular new installation, was unveiled in George Square at the weekend and we have been encouraged to “take a selfie” with it. The gigantic, three-dimensional structure has been designed to reflect the Games logo. It will provide a stunning backdrop for Glasgow’s celebrations when the Commonwealth Games begin on July 23 and will serve as an iconic welcome to the city for visitors, spectators and a global TV audience of some 1.5 billion viewers. The launch of The Big G was carried out by Glasgow school pupils; Cameron Foley (10) and Demi Murray (11) from Anderston Primary alongside Kian McCann and Hannah McLaughlin (both aged 11) from St Timothy’s Primary; Ayoub Habeb and Simona Conkora (both aged 11) from Annette Primary; Dylan Johnston and Eve Lauren Connolly (both aged 11) from Blairdardie Primary and Alex Monteith (11) and Lee Duguid (12) from Sandaig Primary. Wearing colourful, branded Glasgow 2014 merchandise, they were joined by the Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Gordon Matheson and Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, David Grevemberg.

A computer glitch hit Glasgow’s Central Station on Wednesday after information screens “froze”. The problem occurred around 11am and screens listing departing trains were affected. Network Rail admitted trains which had left the busy station remained on screens until the glitch
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow will come alive during the Commonwealth Games and dressing the city is central to building anticipation, excitement and pride as we get ready for the largest party Glasgow has ever hosted. “The unveiling of this spectacular installation in the heart of the city is an opportunity for everyone residents, visitors and spectators - to be part of the Games. We want people to come to George Square and get involved. Take a selfie, change your social media profile picture and help us share it with the world; it was designed with that in mind.” Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, David Grevemberg, said: “With the Games almost upon us we can see the city really beginning to take shape and excitement starting to build. Walking around the streets of Glasgow now you get a real sense of how the city will look and come alive at Games time and this spectacular installation is a fabulous part of that backdrop. I imagine there will be people queuing to get photos taken beside it during what will be an unforgettable Games this summer.” People sharing their images of The Big G on social media networks are encouraged to use the hashtag, #TheBigG. A 74-year-old pensioner was thrown against a wall in Calder Street during the daylight attack. John McCort was shaken up and he didn’t report the mugging to police for several days. Mr McCort, who lives alone, had withdrawn the money from the bank to lend to a relative who had just bought a new house. He said that two females approached him holding a pound coin and repeatedly asked for change. He describes them as being 20-24 and Eastern European. Mr McCort said “While I was looking in my pocket another girl, who was about 24, came up with a 10p piece and asked for two 5p pieces. “I started walking away and turned down Calder Street, but they followed me... I could hear them behind me, so I turned around and told them to beat it.The next thing they shoved me against the wall and were going through my pockets.” He said: “It was over in about three seconds. I checked my pockets and the money was gone. I was shattered... I went home and sat for about three hours with my head in my hands. I knew I’d never see the money again. I didn’t even think it was worth reporting it to the police. “I went back to the bank on Thursday and mentioned it to the staff. They told me to call the police.”
was overcome. A Network Rail spokesman said: “It was a computer glitch which lasted for about 15 minutes. It did not cause much by way of hassle. Small televisions on platforms were working normally and the usual public announcements were made.”
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Our Community Investigation Unit is continuing inquiries following a report of a robbery of a 74-year-old man near to Calder Street. “Anyone with information is asked to contact us on 101.” By

Computer Programming for kids with Future City Glasgow
6th June - 13th June 2014 | Glasgow News 5
Bust-up at Beauty Awards
Children as young as eight can learn to write computer code for free at new Future Makers events. Future City Glasgow is inviting the innovators of tomorrow to try their hands at computer programming this summer. Future Makers activities will be on offer to youngsters aged five to 17. Older children will be shown how to build a website or a computer game and will also get the chance to experiment with wearable technology like a hoodie with sensors which monitor the wearer’s activity levels. Children aged five and above will be encouraged to learn about the concepts behind computing through play with their parents at drop-in sessions in June. The other sessions will take place between June and September. Future City Glasgow is a £24million programme which is demonstrating how technology can
make life in the city smarter, safer and more sustainable. Hundreds of children will be able to take advantage of the Future Makers sessions which will be staffed by Coderdojo mentors and other experts. There will be three informal dropin sessions at Hillhead Library on Byres Road on Saturday June 14; the People’s Palace, Glasgow Green on Sunday June 15 and at Scotland Street Museum on Sunday June 22. Booking will be required for all the other sessions at venues including Glasgow Science Centre, The Bridge in Easterhouse and Scotland Street Museum. Pupils from Cuthbertson Primary School helped Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Future City Glasgow, announce the project at
Scotland Street Museum. Councillor Matheson said: “Today’s young people are the innovators of tomorrow and these days, even as toddlers, children begin playing with technology like mobile phones or tablets. We hope to harness children’s natural thirst for knowledge by introducing them at an early age to skills which will serve them well in later life. All workshop plans and training materials will also be available for free on the Open Glasgow website at the end of summer to enable other interested groups to stage similar events in the future. Bike charity given grant
GLASGOW residents are being encouraged to ‘get on a bike’ after a housing association gave a charity project a £6,000 grant. Sanctuary Scotland has teamed up with South West Community Cycles (SWCC) to deliver cycle training courses, cycle repair workshops and community events in Priesthill. The partnership will also see SWCC provide volunteering opportunities for Priesthill residents and operate a free cycle hire service in the area, where Sanctuary manages almost 600 homes. Alyson Tannahill, SWCC project director, said: “This grant will help us make a difference in Priesthill for many years to come. “Last week local youths started skills training sessions, and the money has helped us employ a dedicated mechanic to ensure all our bikes are roadworthy. “We look forward to growing in
Priesthill alongside those who use our service. It’s a fantastic opportunity for residents to get on a bike and experience the fun and freedom that brings.” SWCC is based at Pollokshaws West Railway Station and attracts cycle users from throughout Glasgow’s southside. The grant is the second time Sanctuary has given SWCC assistance, having bought a van for the project in 2009. Gordon Laurie, director of Sanctuary in Scotland, said: “South West Community Cycles is an excellent community project which encourages local residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. “We hope our grant plays a part in helping more people become active during what promises to be an exciting sporting summer in Glasgow.”

STV launch new TV channel Scottish TV’s first locally based television channel STV Glasgow has went on air (2nd June) after winning the license in January 2013. The proposed idea is to have several independent local television channels throughout Scotland, with Edinburgh also being picked up for a future television channel. It is expected that Ofcom will offer other parts of Scotland the chance to have regionalised television channels.
With the channel available on Freeview, Sky and Virgin it is hoped that because of the ease of access the channels will become a success and tap into more than a niche market. Currently it is unclear how they will approach this however STV director of Broadcasting Bobby Hain tried to alleviate fears in which he said “We have 50 years of television experience and we’re bringing it all to the new model of television, we know the area well and we think we know the audience well.” There have been previous attempts at local TV, Channel M in Manchester and Lanarkshire TV in Scotland, both unfortunately failed.
Both previous channels did not have the one thing that STV Glasgow does however, digital access and an ease of access.
Search for man to help with investigation
Lanarkshire TV was impossible to tune into your television and so was Channel M. It could be considered that those attempts were the BETA phase and the problems have now been ironed out. STV are expecting to have invested £1million pounds into the channel but also expects the channel to have broken even within a year.
Police have released an e-fit image of a man in connection of an indecent assault on a woman in Livingstone.
Since the conception of local television channels by the then Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, there has been few channels promoted to broadcast with London Live being the only one to have been given official viewing figures.
The man was seen near a property in Orchard Place in the early hours of 7th of May. He is described as white, 25 to 30-yearsold, 5ft 10in to 5ft 11in, thin build, long face, with a large thin nose. He has short dark brown or black hair and was wearing a grey sweatshirt. Det Supt Pat Campbell said: “Can I stress that this male may have had legitimate reasons to be within this area at this time. “I would ask that if this is the case, the individual comes forward in order to be eliminated from the investigation. “Any suggestions as to the identity of this male from the public should be forwarded to the police as a matter of urgency.” He added: “We are fully committed to catching this perpetrator. “But I would advise women to take care when walking alone at night in the Livingston area, and to report any suspicious behaviour they may have noticed.”
To begin with the new channels were been complimented as saying that they were the most significant development in British television since CH5 first went on air, but following that some programmes have had less than 300 viewers.
It is expected that because the STV Glasgow is owned by STV there will be larger opportunity to reach a wide ranging audience base. They are also being heavily advertised on STV’s flagship station to help promote the channel. The new channel also aims to provide opportunities for university students studying at Glasgow Caledonian and Napier.

King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicates Syrians vote in presidential election
This week, Syria, which has been in the midst of civil war for the past three years has held its first presidential election in seven years. The civil war between President Bashir Al Assad’s regime and rebel forces has been ongoing for the past three years and has cost tens of thousands of lives and forced millions of Syrians to flee the nation. Critics of the Assad regime have denounced the election as a publicity stunt and a sham. International analysts have said that the Assad regime have ‘went to great lengths’ to present the vote as a solution to the crisis which has been under the spotlight of international media coverage for the past three years. This election, which is being presented as the first fair election in Syrian history, is the first in decades in which more than one name has appeared on the ballot papers.
Two candidates are running against Bashir Al Assad in the election, however, it has been claimed that the two competing candidates Maher Hajjar and Hassan al-Nouri have not been widely publicised and have been unable to promote their campaigns on the same level as the president. The winner of the election will be in office for a period of seven years, it is widely expected to be yet another victory for Assad. The election is being lauded as a sham by opposition groups, as there will not be any opportunity for those in either rebel controlled areas or contested areas to vote in the election. As a result of this many of the rebel groups have pledged to do all they can to disrupt the balloting process. Leader of the opposition group ‘Coalition’ Ahmad al Jarba has described the election as ‘theatre written with the blood of Syrians’. By

US warrant for Russian hacker mastermind US authorities have charged Russian Evgeniy Bogachev with masterminding a major cybercrime syndicate which has affected millions of individulas and businesses worldwide. Bogachev, who is reportedly known as ‘lucky12345’ and ‘slavic’ online stands accused of being involved in cyber attacks on more than a million computers. The charges were brought against the hacker after US authorities in conjunction with cyber crime divisions across the world took control of a botnet which was used to steal personal and financial data from
machines infected with the software,
Computer users worldwide have been urged to run system checks in order to protect themselves from the botnet attacks. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has released a statement saying that users probably have a fortnight before hackers would have the botnet operational again and has posted advice in its website, advising how best to secure systems from the threat. ISP’s have began contacting customers known to have been affected by the botnet this week. By

King Juan Carlos of Spain announced on Monday of this week that he was abdicating his throne, which he has held since the death of General Franco 40 years ago, Juan Carlos will be succeeded by his son the Crown Prince Felipe. The announcement, which has been viewed by many in Spain as sudden but unsurprising, comes on the back of a number of scandals involving the royal family, most recently the accusations of corruption against his daughter Princess Cristina, who alongside her husband has been accused of fraud and money
laundering through a charity trust she controls. The outgoing king was also responsible for tarnishing the image of the royals in the Spanish consciousness, as he went on a lavish elephant hunting trip to Borneo in, in the middle of the most devastating financial crisis in generations. Many in the country are calling for a referendum in order to establish whether the royal family should be abolished in favour of a republic, a system of governance Spain achieved before General Franco’s brutal Nazi backed take over in the 1930’s.
US serviceman released after five years in captivity US Sgt Bowe Bergdahl was released this week after being held captive by the Afghani Taliban, in exchange for five Taliban officials previously held in the Guantanamo Bay internment center. The prisoner swap came about after secret talks between the US government and the Taliban, which were mediated by Qatar. Bergdahl was serving in the Paktika province of Afghanistan which borders onto Pakistan when he was kidnapped on June 30th 2009 by the Taliban. The circumstances behind his kidnapping remain unclear and speculation has abounded, one theory is that Bergdahl absconded from his base due to disillusionment with the US military campaign.
US officials have said that any decision on desertion charges will be made by the army but there is ‘a feeling that the soldier has suffered enough’. Bergdahl was handed over at the beginning of this week by the Taliban to a troop of around 70 US special forces who flew into Afghani/ Pakistani border area of Khost by helicopter. Once in the air, Bergdahl reportedly wrote the letters ‘SF?’ (Special Forces) on a paper plate and broke down after the men responded: ‘Yes, we’ve been looking for you for a long time.’ By

The King explained his decision to step down in a television address on Monday evening saying that the time has come to hand over power to his third child and only son Felipe and that the prince ‘has the maturity, preparation and sense of responsibility necessary to assume the title of head of state and begins a new era of hope which combines the experience and momentum of a new generation’. This king also said that he made the decision to abdicate in January after his 76th birthday and that he was also stepping aside due to health concerns. By

New US backed unified Palestinian government sworn in After several years of often deadly division between the two main political forces in Palestine, Hamas and Fatah have signed a historic agreement to work together as a unified government. The move which has been formally backed by the US this week has been slated by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu due to the involvement of Hamas in the new government. Hamas has been responsible for a number of attacks on Israeli interests and Israel in recent years. The US has tentatively backed the new coalition, yet has voiced its own concern over Hamas’ recent past saying that it would work with the new government but it would be ‘watching closely to ensure that it upholds principles that President Abbas reiterated today’. Brooks; stupid but not criminal
The defending Rebekah and Charlie Brooks at the News of the World phone hacking trial has described Charlie Brooks has as ‘stupid’ and ‘foolish’ but not criminal, the jury at the trial has heard. Mr Brooker was accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice when it was discovered that the former chief executive of News International, hid computers and pornography behind a bin in the car park of their Chelsea home on the day of his wife Rebekah Brooks arrest in July of 2011. However the Mr Brooks defence lawyer Neil Saunders, accepts that Mr Brooks were ‘unwise’ but that Mr Brooks hid the material to save himself and his wife embarrassment and to prevent the police from obtaining the only manuscript of a new novel he was writing.
Mr Saunders claims that what Mr Brooks did was not in fact a criminal offence as nothing found on the computers or DVD’s was criminal in any nature. Saunders also lambasted the prosecution’s case saying that it is ‘theory-driven and not evidence-led’ retaliating against the accusations that Mr Brooks was attempting to subvert the course of justice. Saunders also spoke of how Mr Brooks was scared that the discovery of such items would quickly become public knowledge if they were seized by the police due to the number of leaks that the Guardian had received in relation to the case from police sources.

Governor of the Bank of England, David Carney, hit out at unethical practice in the banking system this week in a speech delivered to industry leaders at a conference in the City of London. Mr Carney said in his speech that the bankers have been operating to a ‘heads-I-win-tails-you-lose-’ system and questioned whether or not traders met any ethical standards, Mr Carney also suggested that those traders who don’t meet professional standards should be ostracised by the industry. Mr Carney was extremely vocal on the subject of morality in business saying: ‘We simply cannot take the capitalist system, which produces such plenty and so many solutions, for granted. Prosperity requires not
just investment in economic capital, but investment in social capital.’ Continuing on the same line, Mr Carney also suggested that the pursuit of profit had moved from being a by product of good financial operations but instead into an ideology of profit at all costs saying: ‘All ideologies are prone to extremes. Capitalism loses its sense of moderation when the belief in the power of the market enters the realm of faith. In the decades prior to the crisis such radicalism came to dominate economic ideas and became a pattern of social behaviour.’ The conference held in the City of London, was on the topic of inclusive capitalism and was attended by former US president Bill Clinton and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. The dog attacked Mr Clark, dragging him into his back garden, tearing off one arm and almost removing the other before an armed police unit arrived to shoot the dog. When armed police arrived, the dog bit the barrell of a policemans rifle before being shot twice in order to kill it. The armed officer who shot the animal said: The dog was so aggressive that after it was shot once, the dog got up and was shot again for a second time. The two women, Della Woods and Hayley Sulley had left the animal in question in their back garden while they attended a barbecue, it was revealed in a post mortem examination of the animal that it had not been fed or given water for at least 45 hours previous to the attack. 1 in 10 Scots who’ve attended a stag or hen do had to borrow money to go More than one in 10 people in Scotland who have attended a stag or hen do say they had to borrow money so they could be there.
A new survey conducted on behalf of Debt Advisory Centre Scotland has revealed that of the third (29%) of Scottish adults who have been away for a stag or hen weekend, 14% had to borrow cash to be able to attend. Meanwhile, one in four (25%) respondents say they have previously turned down an invitation to the prewedding celebrations because money was too tight. In recent years, more grooms and brides-to-be appear to prefer a weekend away to celebrate their forthcoming nuptials than a night out, which has caused the cost of attending the event to climb higher. Yet even if they could not really afford to be
there, a fifth (19%) of respondents in Scotland admit they would feel obliged to go anyway.
place. And nearly one in 10 (8.16%) have paid upwards of £500 so they can join in.
Pushing up the cost of stag and hen dos is overnight accommodation for one or more nights, which two-fifths (42%) of Scots who have been to one of these events cite as being the most expensive part of it. This is followed by flights or ferry tickets (22%) when the destination is abroad, drinks and meals (20%) and other travel costs (6.1%). Activities during the stag or hen do, booking additional time off work and putting money towards the bride or groom’s gift are also cited as the pricey obligations of being part of the celebrations.
Spokesman for Debt Advisory Centre Scotland Ian Williams says: “The stag/ hen do is becoming an increasingly important marriage tradition, which might explain why these events have also become much more elaborate – and expensive. It’s telling that one in five Scots have felt obliged to attend even when they couldn’t really afford to.
In fact, so expensive have some of these events become that a quarter (24%) of Scottish attendees have splashed out more than £300 on their
“However, what’s even more worrying is that 14% of attendees admit they have borrowed money so they can join in. If they feel they really can’t afford to attend without a loan, it might be worth these guests talking in private to the bride and groom to see if there’s another – less costly – way they could celebrate with them separately.”
BT Green
Energy
BT have agreed a significant deal to provide themselves with enough energy to cover all their Scottish operations for the next 20 years. The Wind Farm in Fallago Rig scheme north of Lauder has had 50% percent of its 48-turbine quota purchased by BT for £300million pounds. BT Scotland director Brendan Dick said of the deal “it gives us long term price certainty”, and that “BT are determined to meet their energy needs in an environmentally friendly way.” BT is a major consumer of electricity in Scotland using as much as 170 Gigawatt hours per year. However the company has significantly reduced its carbon emissions by 25.5%percent globally since 2013 and Dick says “We’re committed to reducing our own carbon emissions as we are to providing products and services that help everyone live within the planet’s resources.” Previous to the BT deal Fallago Rig was partially owned by EDF Energy
Renewables and continues to remain a stakeholder in the farm which is one of the largest wind farms in the UK. For years previous to the wind farms erection, there was a six year rising of opposition protest because of the hard effect the massive windfarm was going to have on the long term safety of the countryside. Eventually after a six year fight the protest faltered after a judge ruled that there was no need for a judicial review of approval for the ambitious windfarm project. Brendan Dick had this to say about the lucrative financial deal. “Our deal with Fallago Rig reinforces our commitment to make a positive contribution to society and the environment.” Energy Minister Fergus Ewing only had good things to say about the Scottish renewable energy market “With EDF Energy and BT now sharing 100%percent of the energy produced by Fallago Rig. It also
secures (electrical) generation at the site for the long term future and shows the importance of Scottish renewable energy to Scottish based businesses and their customers.” BT’s purchase of the windfarm will go a long way to making sure Scotland reaches its Low Carbon Emission target by 2022 having already reduced the carbon consumption by 7.9%percent between 2009/2010 and 2012/2013. WWF Scotland director Lang Banks hailed the energy purchase saying it was “good news”. He said “If Scotland is to meet its climate change targets and decarbonise its power sector then we need to see more big companies follow BT’s example and opt for 100% percent renewable energy. He continued.“Better still we’d like to see companies build and own their own wind turbines or solar farms.”

Plans are in place by Glasgow City Council to move elderly residents from a property in Burnbank Gardens to a purposebuilt unit in Possilpark. 40 homeless men will move into Burnbank House to help cope with a short-age of accommodation. Locals have stated that they were not asked about the changes, but told it was happening. A meeting will be held in Maryhill Central Halls to inform local people on the homeless unit, and a protest will be staged outside. The protest is being organised by Members of Burnbank Action Group, and say the hostel will accommodate men with alcohol and drug dependency problems, as well as former prisoners. A spokesman said: “At a recent meeting of the action group, 100 local residents said no to this proposed hostel.
“Local residents are deeply opposed to this plan for a number of good reasons. “The

“There has been no consultation with

A city council spokesman said: “The city

Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 8 The Mountain & the Viper Review Warning Spoilers Ahead!
This episode is Game of Throne’s goriest by far. At the start we witness wildlings raid and massacre the people of Mole’s Town. Later on we see Ramsay Snow use Reek’s former identity as Theon Greyjoy to trick the Iron-born into surrendering.
Despite their compliance, Ramsay slaughters them all when he seizes Moat Cailin. The camera focuses on the flayed body of an Iron-born whilst Ramsay explains to Reek that he never intended to let them live. A disturbing image to match a disturbing character. The ending, however, leaves the most horrific death until last. The fight between the Mountain and Oberyn at first seems to be in the latter’s favour. He dances around his opponent with a deadly grace that contrasts with the Mountain’s impulsive and brutish fighting style. Eventually Oberyn gets the Mountain on the ground and

has the opportunity to defeat him, but defers delivering a mortal blow until he gets him to confess to the rape and murder of his sister, along with the killing of her children. The Mountain confesses, but not until after he takes the opportunity to trip Oberyn over and squeeze his head into a bloody pulp. A death that will forever be emblazoned in the minds of the show’s audience. Perhaps Oberyn should have listened when Tyrion Lannister suggested he should wear a helmet?
ENTER OUR TWO GREAT COMPETITIONS!
After a week’s break between episodes, the hype for episode 8 reached its optimal point. Fans gathered around their screens for the event they have been waiting a fortnight to see: the fight between Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne, and Gregor Clegane, the Mountain that Rides.
Along with this stomach-churning image that shocked even those who had previously read the books and knew what was coming, the episode leaves us with some unanswered questions. Firstly, what will become of Tyrion? Now that his champion is dead, tradition states that he too must be put to death, but it is clear from previous episodes that it’s not in Tywin Lannister’s interests to let his youngest son die. Secondly, what will the Hound do with Arya Stark now he has learnt that her aunt, Lysa Arryn, is dead and will not be able to pay the
ransom he had hoped to receive upon the girl’s return? Thirdly, what is up with Sansa Stark’s sudden change in appearance? The last we see of her, she is walking down the steps of the Eyrie, wearing a black feathered dress and dyed hair to match. She has a new air of confidence about her, which is regal but also deadly. Hopefully next week will answer these questions. By

New Worlds Competition
Blood, power and passion are the key ingredients in New Worlds a gripping historical drama set in the turbulent 1680’s, shown on Channel 4 for the first time last month and released on DVD by RLJ Entertainment last week. This lavish period piece takes place on both sides of the Atlantic during the early days of British colonialism in the Americas under the reign of Charles II. In England, the restored monarchy of King Charles II has betrayed its promises and reverted to tyranny. Behind the decadence of the court a terror machine of torture and executions is repressing the freedoms won for the people during Englands bloody civil war. In America, the tentacles of state terror reach the Colonists but they themselves are ruthlessly staking their claim to the territories occupied by the
Native Americans, in a chilling echo of the tyranny they seek to escape. Against this turbulent back drop, four young people: Beth, Hope, Abe and Ned, struggle to choose between love and ideals in the harsh reality of the changing world.

CULTURE AND EVENTS
Orange is the New Black... is back! Coloursfest 2014
Braehead Arena and Waterfront lit up once again, welcoming the cream of the dance music world. Coloursfest 2014 rode into town on the 31st of May. Cancel whatever plans you made on Friday night, chill the wine and get the laptop charged because OITNB is back! All 13 episodes of season two will land on Netflix on Friday 6th of June. The show is centred around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a young, middle-class bisexual woman who is sentenced to serve 15-months in prison for carrying drug money for an exgirlfriend ten years ago. Season one follows Piper and how she comes to term with prison life – being stuck in jail with ex-girlfriend Alex (Laura Prepon)
and being separated from her fiancé Larry (Jason Biggs). While in prison, Piper tries to fit into the social hierarchy and make friends, not enemies. The show, described as a comedydrama, is hilarious yet dark at the same time. Season two is rumoured to be “even darker than season one.” The series has also been renewed for a third season. Creator and Producer Jenji Kohan – who previously created the Showtime dramedy Weeds –has revealed the possibility of carrying on the show after Piper is released from prison.

“I got burned on Weeds, where you’d change things, but there’s also a tradition of shows that evolve, and different characters come in and you fall in love with them,” she says. “With prison, there are new stories every day. If the audience is willing to take that ride and follow the next interesting person, it can go on for a long time. I may not be standing, but it can go on for a really long time.” Orange is the New Black starts Friday, 6th June on Netflix.

Traditionally set the first week in June, this years one day festival decided to host at the end of May. The weather was dry and warm and the event was a sell out, the organisers couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome. With the lineup this year appeasing all fans of EDM, Wunderkid Martin Garrix had the fans lapping up his set in the main arena, while German trance kings Cosmic Gate promoting their new album did not disappoint, throwing in a few of the older classics appealing to the die hard in the crowd who very rarely get to witness their
trance heroes on Scottish soil. German trance king Markus Schulz played a blinding set, applying his trademark dark trance, while Aly and Fila the Egyptian trance demi Gods hypnotised the near capacity crowd. Scottish GBX DJ, George Bowie a Coloursfest regular brought his internationally famous DJ set to Braehead, bringing Darren Styles and Mallorca Lee to his outdoor stage, and with the sun shining down on the riverside the crowd were loving his set of old school tracks and fan favourites. Overall the night was a massive success, with queues moving quite quickly and an atmosphere fitting the warm summer sunshine, Coloursfest again let the rest of Britain know that Scotland knows how to host dance events. Roll on next year.

Sound of the Underground!
With the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow next month, public transport will be more important than ever. The city will be bustling with tourists and locals trying to make their way to view the events. With many of us wanting the easiest way possible, what method of public transport should we choose? What will avoid traffic, be on time and take you from one side of the city to the other? Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, I present to you... the Subway! The Subway is by far the easiest way to get around the City Centre and West End of Glasgow. Running every four minutes at peak times, it takes just 24 minutes to complete a circuit of the fifteen stations. Its reasonable too, it costs as little as £1.40 for an adult single to travel anywhere else on the system. Opening on 14 December 1896, the Glasgow Subway is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the British Isles outside London, and also the only one outside London which operates completely underground. The Glasgow Subway is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft. Subway recently announced that an “enhanced service” will be in place during the Games. This means that from July 23 to August 3, there will be be a peak service timetable in place. During the Games trains will run roughly every four minutes from 6:30am until 11:30pm Monday to Friday, and 6am1am Saturday and Sunday. By
Tourists won’t need to worry about staying in the West End, or if you live in Govan the subway will solve all your public transport woes. The Games not really your thing? Stop off at Buchanan Street or St. Enoch centre for a spot of shopping. However, you don’t need to wait until the Games to try out the “Shoogle” - a name coined to the Subway due to the ‘shoogling’ about that occurs as the vehicle moves. Why not use it to get to the West End Festival, with the West End Festival Mardi Gras Parade this Sunday and the Glasgow Mela this Saturday and Sunday, it is the best opportunity to ride the Subway. If you are out on a night out in Glasgow, which boasts the best night-life in Scotland, the subway stops at Cowcaddens which lies parallel to Sauchiehall Street, or get off at St. Enoch and walk through to Merchant City. Whatever you are out and about doing, the Subway is the best way to get around the city. If you will be travelling via Subway, download the iShoogle app, for service updates, timetables and station information.

Star Signs
Joan Charles
Clairvoyant, Columnist & Author Joan Charles
I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries There might just be a touch of magic in the air and whatever you do seem to happen and all fall into place in jig time. This will suit you down to the ground as you like it when things happen quickly and in your favour.
Taurus Others may need to understand that you just don’t suffer fools gladly and are quick to let them know that they are bugging you. Perhaps a little patience would come in handy to help you through.
Gemini There is a transformation coming and it could be heading your direction, which is positive, and albeit you may not like change this can only be good as it helps you to sort things in your life out.
Cancer Don’t doubt your own abilities and they will soar but keep putting them under pressure and down and that’s exactly what you could attract. Life is heard enough and it is time that you got a break so PMA will get you what you want.
Leo Love and romance appear to be the order of the week and to be honest I sense that the time is right for some of you to start looking in this direction. Watch out for some interesting offers coming your way.
Virgo They say two heads are better than one and maybe this week that is the very thing that you need to help you look at a situation from a different perspective. A pair of fresh eyes will make all the difference.
Libra With summer looming I can see a list being created of the things that you will want to do to keep you amused and in amongst all of these I sense is a concert that you don’t want to miss so, get moving on that.
Scorpio I am feeling that you are in no mood for general chitchat and would like some quiet time and space to yourself at the moment. Sometimes you just need that headspace to think your thoughts in peace.
Summer Time Readings Courses:
Introduction to the Tarot– The Law of Attraction and Psychic Development courses are on-going, so, check for dates and details.
Readings:
Tarot, Angel, Spiritual, Chakra and Tarumenology [a combination of tarot and numerology]
For details of any of the above contact Joan on mobile: 07930 697 229 or email: joan.charles@btopenworld.com
Competition Win a Tarot Reading with Joan Charles We will be running this competition across all of our papers for the month of June so if you want to be in with a chance of winning here is what you need to do.
Sagittarius We all like a joke but so long as it’s not at the expense of someone else, I am picking up on something that could get out of hand if not handled properly so perhaps its better to think before engaging in conversation.
Capricorn A triumph means that you get a pat on the back and recognised for something that you have put a lot of hard work and effort into. Keep challenging yourself as it is obviously paying off.
Aquarius Could be that you are going to be offered something new in a work sense that will be right up your street. This could be a little different to the norm but that’s the way you like to operate anyway.
Pisces Have you got itchy feet? I have a feeling that you are looking to be on the move in some way, this could be about moving house or travel but whatever it is things are shifting and in a hurry.
Simply answer this question;
In the Tarot deck what Major Arcana card is number 12? Email your answers to Joan at; joan.charles@btopenworld The winner will be contacted by email and you can either go see Joan for a face-to-face reading or have the reading done on the phone [on a land line] or on Skype.

Mela Festival
as to the West End Festival
Newcomer at the UK Asian Music Awards, 2011 he won Best Desi Act. Other acts such as G-Town Desi will be appearing at the Rubicon Bandstand. G-Town infuse the style of DJ’ing with outside influences of Eastern traditional music and western based urban themes. Sure to be a huge crowd puller. World Music Percussionist Jon Sterckx brings along his Drumscapes concept. An exciting and original solo performance to Glasgow Mela.
The original concept has Sterckx bringing his unique sound of music from around the world with a 21st century twist. All of the instruments are played, sampled, mixed and processed live on stage in a synthesis of traditional musicianship and live electronics. The resulting music is a universally spectacular mixture of rhythmic soundscapes and high energy drumming. A once in a lifetime experience.
Scotland’s very own world famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers are also scheduled to perform at the Glasgow Mela Festival, after winning the BBC talent show When Will I Be Famous the groups reputation went stratospheric, from appearing at TITP with The Darkness to appearing on Greg James’ Radio 1 show as well as with Nick Grimshaw in 2014. Consisting of 20 or so members the group put a rockier sound to their typical bagpipe sound.
Calling it “bagrock” the group will cover contemporary pieces such as Coldplay, Avicci, even classic Queen songs amongst others. They were only kept off the US Amazon chart top spot by the runaway success of Adele’s 21 album. World famous, the bagpiping group will arguably bring the largest crowd of the Kelvingrove crowd. With the best entertainers in Glasgow, as well as some of the bets in the world set to appear at the West End Festival, the Mela festival and West
End Parade coinciding to enhance the spectacle of the day. This upcoming weekend in Glasgow is shaping up to be one of the best on record. With the West End Festival approaching its twentieth year next year, things are only going to expand and improve.

Opens 6/6/14
FRIDAY 6 - THURSDAY 12 JUNE
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return as undercover buddy cops in this riotous sequel to the hit comedy, 21 Jump Street. Much to the disappointment of sneery Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman), officers Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) are back on undercover duty. This time they’re assigned to investigate a college drugs ring. All the original team are reunited by returning directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who had a huge hit with ‘The LEGO Movie’.
NT Live: A Small Family Business (12A) One Day Special 12/6/14
Alan Ayckbourn’s award-winning satire on greed and corruption makes a triumphant return to the NT. Jack McCracken is a man of probity in an increasingly dishonest world. Now he has the chance to put his principles into practice. He’s just taken over the family furniture business. At a celebratory party, Jack delivers an inspiring speech about the importance of integrity. But then he’s approached by a private detective bearing compromising information. Before long, Jack learns that his entire extended family are greedy, adulterous crooks, happily bleeding the firm dry! As he too becomes tainted by their misdeeds, he’s locked into an increasingly hysterical downward spiral from industrial espionage to drug-dealing and murder! Olivier Award-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn’s blackly comic morality play brilliantly satirised the ‘greed is good’ decade and won the 1987 Evening Standard Award for Best Play. It now returns to the National Theatre for the first time since that much lauded premiere.
Belle (12A)
Opens 13/6/14 A ravishingly beautiful costume drama based on the true story of a mixedrace girl raised as an aristocrat in 18th century England. Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mabatha-Raw) is the illegitimate daughter of Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode) and a Caribbean slave. Following the death of her mother in 1769, Dido is sent to live with her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). She’s raised as an aristocrat alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon). But despite her inherited wealth, the colour of her skin means she remains an outsider and is not even permitted to dine with the family. Her life changes when she falls for reforming vicar’s son John Davinier (Sam Reid). Inspired by a true story, Amma Asante’s sumptuous romantic period drama has a Jane Austen-esque eye for social hierarchies while also tackling the weightier subject of slavery. The outstanding supporting cast includes Miranda Richardson and Penelope Wilton.
Jersey Boys (15) Opens 20/6/14
Clint Eastwood’s version of the Tony Award-winning jukebox musical telling the story of iconic sixties band The Four Seasons. In the early 1960s, New Yorkers Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza) and Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) form a rock’n’roll group. But it’s their discovery of the young Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young) and his incredible falsetto singing voice that proves to be their trump card. With gifted songwriter and keyboard player Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen) on board, this quartet from the wrong side of the tracks embark on the path to superstardom. Christopher Walken co-stars as The Four Seasons’ mobster friend Gyp DeCarlo in this eye-opening true story of the tough times and personality clashes that shaped one of the biggest bands of the era. Legendary director Clint Eastwood delivers his own distinctive take on the hit Broadway musical, with original stage star John Lloyd Young returning to play Frankie Valli.
Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie (15) Opens 27/6/14
Brendan O’Carroll’s brilliant comic creation defends her market stall from a nasty developer in her hilarious bigscreen debut. Feisty matriarch Agnes Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) runs a fruit and vegetable stall in Dublin’s historic Moore Street Market. It’s been in her family for generations and she hopes eventually to pass it to daughter Cathy (Jennifer Gibney). Then she receives a vast tax bill. Maria (Fiona O’Carroll) and Rory (Rory Cowan) embark on a foolhardy plan to raise the cash by swimming the channel. Meanwhile, our potty-mouthed heroine learns that she’s not the only one to have her livelihood and heritage threatened. A dastardly developer wants to bulldoze the entire market. Now Agnes must take on the Irish establishment - with a little help from Buster Brady’s troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourette’s Syndrome! This uproarious spin-off from Brendan O’Carroll’s much-loved, BAFTAwinning TV comedy sensation was filmed in authentic Dublin locations.

veryone’s gone football crazy, they’re football mad – and if you’ve managed to escape the sport so far, brace yourself, because you’re going to run into it very soon indeed. Perhaps the men in white will do better in Soccer Aid 2014 (Sunday, ITV, 6pm), which has
been taking place every two years since 2006.

Alesha Dixon Britain’s Got Talent: Live Final ITV, 7pm After weeks of tough auditions and five fiercely competitive semi-finals, the national talent search comes to a close as the remaining contestants perform one last time.

PICK OF THE WEEK
On the ball Kirsty Gallacher and Dermot O'Leary.

Review
This hand cream is made with shea butter and cocoa butter which explains why my hands were so nourished after using it! With its “rich earthy base notes” the light scent of amber, patchouli and sandalwood is complimented by the notes of red berries. I have to confess, I very rarely use hand cream as I hate the feeling of it lingering about for ages, but this hand cream is non-greasy and it sinks in fast. I’ve been using it ever since and it’s perfect to keep in your hand bag for on the go, or at your desk. It also comes in a beautiful box, which makes it perfect for a gift. Overall, it gets a big thumbs up from me!

Handy Hints and Tips
Lost an earring or something small? Cut the leg off an old pair of tights or use an old pop sock and cover the vacuum nozzle. This will bring the earring to the surface, and will get caught on the tights! If you seal an envelope but forgot to include something, place the envelope in the freezer for a few hours and the envelope will unseal without leaving any marks! If your furniture has left dents in the carpet, leave an ice cube on the dent and leave it overnight. The ice will melt and the carpet will fluff up. Nutribullet:
By
Kaitlin McManus
Gazpacho
Makes juices, but not as we know them
“
Ingredients ¼ onion, sliced 3 large tomatoes, quartered ¼ cucumber, ¼ green pepper • 1 tbsp salt 1 clove garlic • ½ cup olive oil • ¼ cup white vinegar extra diced cucumber for garnish
Method
It’s known as a Superfood Nutrition Extractor
When I first saw the Nutribullet advertised on one of the shopping channels, I didn’t see what all the hype was about. It’s a blender, big deal, I thought. Then, as I watched the demonstrations and how it actually works, I was blown away. I sat for over an hour, mesmerised. You see, it’s not a blender, or a juicer, or a food processor. It’s known as a Superfood Nutrition Extractor. A juicer extracts the juice and leaves the fibre, fibre that we need for nutritional values. A blender liquidises, but leaves chunks and seeds behind. The Nutribullet completely breaks down ingredients in to their most nutritious state, making it easier to absorb. Seeds and nuts are pulverised, and skins of fruit and vegetables are broken down to unlock all the goodness within. Sounds too good to be true, right? I thought so, and at the RRP price of £99.99, I was a bit apprehensive in case it wasn’t as good as it it cracked up to be. However, I soon found out I had nothing to worry about. Pulling all the bits and pieces out the box, I couldn’t wait to try it out and I wasn’t disappointed. The guidelines say to add 50% leafy greens, I.e. Spinach, kale and 50% fruit. They also recommend you add a ‘boost’ which come in the form of nuts and seeds. You then add water to the line, and you are ready to blast! I started off with spinach, apple and grapes. I also added sunflower, sesame and flax seeds. It’s really simple to use, just load it up add water and then screw on the lid. The lid has the Extracting
Put everything except the cucumber garnish in the Nutribullet and squash down. Add water to max line. Blitz until smooth. Chill for 2 hours or to drink straight away, add ice. Add diced cucumber and serve!

blades fitted into it, and because they are intended to blast the ingredients rather than chop, they are blunter than usual blades which means they are safer to use and don’t need sharpened. After screwing on the lid, click it into p l a c e , twist and it starts. T h e r e are no buttons o r switches. Once you are happy with the c o n s i s t e n c y, unscrew the lid and pour into a glass. Yum! To clean, just add some hot soapy water and blast it. Give it a rinse and you’re done! So much easier than juicers which have numerous parts and built in sieves that need scrubbed. Sounds pretty amazing, doesn’t it. However, it’s talents don’t just stop at juices. There is also another blade for milling. The milling blade is used to turn dry ingredients into powders. This can be used to mill oats, nuts and seeds. So now we know how it works, what does it do for our bodies? The Nutribullet is designed in such a way to blast the seeds

Green Juice Ingredients
2 handfuls Spinach ½ stick of celery • 1 apple 1 handful of grapes 1 tsp spirulina powder 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp chia seeds • 1 tbsp almonds
Method Put ingredients in Nutribullet tumbler Add water to max line. Blast it and enjoy!
Note All fruit and vegetables differ in size, so the recipe may change. Don’t worry if it’s not exact, judge it for yourself. You can use any nuts and seeds you like, change it up and experiment with different flavours. The amount of water you put in will alter the thickness. If it is too thick, just add more water!
and skin of fruit to release nutrients that we wouldn’t normally be able to absorb just from eating them. When our body fails to absorb these nutrients, we become weaker and more vulnerable to sickness and disease. Absorbing these nutrients will also have an effect on how we look and feel. You will notice you are more energetic, less bloated and depending on your diet and the level of exercise you are doing, drinks can aid weight loss. Overall, I personally believe the Nutribullet is a fantastic piece of equipment and thoroughly recommend it to anyone contemplating buying one.
Brownie Bites Ingredients
2 cups of pitted dates 1 cup of pecans/ macademia/ walnuts 3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder 2 tbsp pure maple syrup (optional)
Method Blast the nuts of your choice in the Nutribullet. Add the rest of the ingredients. Scoop it all into a bowl and add enough water so that it all sticks together. Shape into balls or spread into a lined baking tray and refridgerate for 2 hours.

As the temperatures rise, unfortunately so does the pollen count. This means one thing – hay fever. The watery eyes, runny noses and sneezing fits can be annoying and difficult to live with, but did you know that our pets can get hay fever too? If you notice excessive scratching, hair loss where the scratching occurs, red or irritated ears, and extreme licking or chewing of their paws, then your cats and dogs may have seasonal allergies. It’s best to take them to their veterinarian for a checkup. Vets can conduct a physical exam and a blood test to see if your pet has seasonal allergies. Here are our top tips to reduce your pets allergies: It is important that pets are kept well groomed throughout the pollen season. This includes
trimming hair - especially for long haired animals - and indulging them in weekly baths to help get rid of any lingering pollen. Keep your pets indoors while mowing the grass, weeding the garden, or trimming the trees in your yard. This will lessen exposure to pollens in the air. Right before you get inside your home, wipe your dog’s paws. This way your pet will not bring any pollens inside. When vacuuming and dusting your home, keep your pet in another room. Vacuuming and dusting often stirs up allergens. If possible, make the longest walk of the day in the morning. The dew on the grass lessens the release of pollens. If these tips don’t help, take your pet to the vet and they may be able to prescribe some medication.

Five step mortgage decision Getting a foot on the first rung of the property ladder can seem an uphill struggle. But if you are finding saving a deposit or getting a mortgage difficult, there are places you can go to for help, whatever age you are.
1
Make sure you can afford the monthly repayments...All first time buyers will be aware that it makes more than bricks and mortar to be able to have a healthy home. Do you really want to be living in abject poverty, or live as a complete recluse because of serious financial shortfalls. Budget beforehand, that way you can work out what you can realistically afford.
2
The application process. Yes the dreaded application process. Where hopes come to die. Lenders must check you can afford the mortgage, they must also test how stable your finances are if interest rates change or your circumstances change(job loss, illness etc)
3
Saving for a deposit e.g. The road to the promised land. At the
current time you need to save in the region of 5% percent of the total price of the house you are looking to buy. At the moment the Government also have a Help To Buy Scheme in which they help prospective buyers by providing them with up to 20% percent toward the rest of their mortgage, allowing them a better chance of getting them on to the property market.
4
Finding the mortgage that’s right for you (Or also known as avoiding the manic eyed mortgage advisor who’s about sell you into a life of slavery not witnessed since Egyptian times). First of all there are many type of mortgages, it doesn’t have to be difficult, ask advice (like it or not, parents are usually helpful) things like knowing whether you want fixed monthly rates, variable rates etc. It’s the biggest decision of your life, best not go into it blindfolded
5
Finding a guarantor for your mortgage. Probably best not asking your mate, crazy Al, y’no the one that crashed your car and still smashes street-lights when he gets out of his anger management meetings. Parents, guardians or close relatives
MA S DIS SIVE CO SU UN MM TS! ER
are usually the best bet, its a legally binding contract and your guarantor literally needs to be able to pay your mortgage if you cant. If you can survive these five terrifying pitfalls, and still choose the mortgage life then, there are no more dangers (well apart from, children)
Here’s a handy list of things for stressful consideration in buying a home(and to assist in the premature greying/balding of your hair).
• Mortgage arrangements and valuation fees • Stamp Duty
• Solicitors fees
• Removal costs • Survey costs
• Initial furnishing and decorating costs • Building insurance

PROPERTY Landlords manipulating tenants with Commonwealth Games subterfuge
Organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have reacted in fury after realising people advertising their properties on Gumtree were using the Commonwealth Games symbol to entice prospective buyers. The reason for the draconian measures is to stop any rogue marketing attempts at benefiting unscrupulously through affiliation with Glasgow’s sporting and athletic show-piece. The ban on using the name is to ensure that the rights of the commercial sponsors are maintained and to prevent ambush marketing in the run up to the Games. Luke Todd head of customer operations at Gumtree said “we are committed to protecting buyers and sellers who use our site, and any adverts which infringed upon
intellectual property or trademark rights were not permitted.” Commercial rights and marketing rights are worth millions to sponsors in what as seen as a very prestigious sporting event, alongside this years World Cup in Brazil. It is imperative for organisers to affirm that the level of marketing and commercial rights seen throughout the game will not be diluted by people cashing in and damaging the Commonwealth Games legacy. A spokesperson for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games said “Glasgow 2014 has a responsibility to ensure that unauthorised and fraudulent adverts are not perceived as having any official association with the Games and will only act in cases where we feel there may be confusion, or a danger of customers being misled.”
M can you keep the noise down please.
The chairman if boutique hotel Citizen M has admitted to overlooking one major cog in the his well oiled chain of hotels. People in Glasgow would prefer to stay up all night and party. Much to the chagrin of the quieter less inebriated hotel guests. Rattan Chadha chairman of the citizenM hotel chain admitted that after the success of opening two hotels in Amsterdam and deciding to open a premises in Glasgow, they couldn’t have been happier with the immediate and ongoing popularity of their Glasgow citizenM premises. However there was one difference between the Amsterdam and Glasgow hotel. Glasgow doesn’t sleep. Chadha spoke of why they chose Glasgow to set up shop said “London
prices were sky high, so when we found a prime place in downtown, we said “its not ideal but lets try. It’s the number one hotel in Glasgow, but it doesn’t attract our target customers.”
Chadha said “Most people come from England or other parts of Scotland and like to drink. When the bars close, they bring the party to the hotel. That’s not what we intended.”
CitizenM has branches in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Glasgow, London, New York and Paris and yet Glasgow has been the most troublesome, last year whilst the Stone Roses were playing in Glasgow, the hotel had one of its busiest weekends, with the fire brigade, ambulance and police all being called upon at various times during the night.
After opening in 2010 CitizenM has became the go to hotel for young international travellers and is the third highest ranked hotel in Glasgow on Tripadvisor, with guests expressing delight in the décor and the attitude of staff.

Ever fancied owning your own island off the coast of Scotland? Got a spare £550,000 pounds down the back of the couch?
If the answer is yes then perhaps you would be interested in owning the island of Gigalum? Situated on the south-eastern tip of the Hebridean Islands, Gigalum is the epitome of “getting away from it all” the
remote island boasts fantastic scenery, has the opportunity for green energy investment, as well as a three bedroom all for the bargain price of half a million pounds. Gigalum is only a short boat trip or jetty
trip toward neighbouring islands such as Kintyre, or Cara and with local festivals during the year, it will be surprising how much fun you can have. Gigha, another neighbouring island only boasts around 150 people on the entire

London property Billy Connolly sells beloved Highland mansion sets new low
Properties prices in London set a new low/high this week as a tenant forked out to rent a room that can barely(if at all) fit a mattress. The studio flat in Islington was advertised as having a reception, kitchen and bedroom but as you can see from the supplied photo that they are in fact the same room. Shockingly it costs £737 pounds
a month to live there, and is advertisied as featuring an en suite bathroom(which we can only presume is a sink with a running faucet. Amazingly the flat was snapped up within a matter of hours although a spokesman for estate agent relocateme.co.uk marketing the property on RightMove said “we agree the flat is small, but it would be useful for professionals renting an apartment and needing a place to crash.”
Billy Connolly has sold his beloved Scottish mansion and estate for nearly £3million pounds. Don’t feel too sorry for the Big Yin though he made a tidy profit of nearly £2.5 million pounds after purchasing it for £590,000 pounds in 1998. Connolly and his wife Pamela are basing more and more of their time in New York, however they are rumoured to have kept a cottage in the grounds of the 14 acre expanse of land.
Locals will be sad to see Billy go as he serves up drams to the Men of the Lonach who march through the glen to the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games. Candacraig House was built in the 17th century and features 12 bedrooms in the mansion. Connolly has spoken of his battle with prostate cancer and being diagnosed with Parkinson’s although it is unsure whether this has affected his decision to sell up.
The mansion has seen showbiz pals such as Robin Williams and Steve Martin visit and sample the highland hospitality and previously was owned by Bodyshop founder Anita Roddick. Jennifer Stewart secretary of the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, said “He will continue to be a supporter as he is an honorary member of the Lonach Society. “He will continue to provide a trophy for the piping competition so nothing’s going to change from our point of view. He’s been great for the area.”

In Dub we trust -
UKMK3’s Steal the Show As the proud owner of a less than pristine Golf of the Mk3 vintage and a member of the MK3 owners club, I made it my duty to represent the Glasgow branch of the club at this auspicious inaugural gathering.
Before I even begin this week I’m going to apologize, as this weeks feature is more than a little self indulgent. Last weekend I made the most important pilgrimage of the year for UK VW fans, the annual DubMania show at Weston Park in Shropshire, a show that for this VW fan was made all the more important as this beautiful country house and estate was the backdrop to the first national gathering for the Volkswagen MK3 owners clubs.
After the grueling six hour drive to Weston Park from Glasgow on Saturday, during which I seriously reconsidered my stance on needing air conditioning in Britain, I was greeted by an already bustling showground with a large number of cars already in attendance despite the show proper not scheduled until the following day. Saturday night was definitely the night for the owners and drivers. Arriving at the MK3 stand, which was heavy with the aroma of meat being charred to barely edible chunks on disposable barbecues, I was greeted by some of the most
friendly people I’ve ever met at a car show, and made to feel welcome as the only member of the Scottish contingent to make the trip.
The cars on display at the club stand were without a doubt some of the most creatively and fantastically modified cars at the show, a gulf apart from the Audi club who seem to believe conformity to factory spec is key rather than individuality. As the night continued and a fair amount of refreshments were imbibed by everyone present, the nights entertainment in the form of a DJ set went down a treat which was supplemented by some serious sound system wattage from the club stand. The following morning everyone was up and about at 7am, polishing cloths in hand, changing wheels and generally

This was the second incident of the day at the Jim Clark Rally, after a number of spectators were injured in a crash earlier in the day. Alan Johnstone, media manager for the rally said in a statement: ‘This is the first fatality we have had and it’s been one very bad day We try our level, level best to get it as safe as possible. You’ll never get it 100% by
its very nature.’ The weekend of tragedies was followed by fatal crashes on Monday and Tuesday at the Isle of Man TT, one of the worlds most famous motorcycle races. The first fatality was that of Stroud rider Bob Price 65, the veteran rider who was an extremely experience road racer came off the track at Ballaugh on his third lap of the 60km course, the second fatality on Tuesday was that of three time British Supersport Champion Karl Harris, who was killed on Tuesday afternoon during the Superstock race. The 34 year old crashed at the famous Joey’s Corner, during his final lap of the same circuit which had claimed the life of Bob Price the day before. No doubt after a week filled with such tragedy, many politicians will be trying to win points by damning motorsports as a dangerous pursuit. However, as any motorsport enthusiast will tell you, everyone knows the risks when competing or spectating at a high speed event and it seems that Alan Johnstone, when commenting on the safety of racing this week got it bang on saying ‘you’ll never get it 100% by its very nature.’ By

Schumacher fans warned not to expect good news This week former F1 doctor, Gary Hartstein, warned fans of F1 legend, Michael Schumacher, that they will ‘never have good news’ concerning the stricken drivers condition.
This statement comes after Schumacher enters his fifth month in a vegetative coma, which was induced by doctors after a near fatal head injury the driver sustained while skiing in the French Alps in December of last year.
It has so far been two months since the family has released any information on Schumachers condition, with the last official update in April saying: ‘Michael is making progress on his way. He shows moments of consciousness and awakening. We are on his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team of the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident’

Rain dampens Tigers progress
AGAINST ALL ODDS Ladies, say goodbye to your husbands for the next 4 weeks. You now have 28 days to spend spend spend whilst us men are laid up with that 4 yearly virus – World Cupitis . Football is coming home, the 12th of June sees Brazil open the tournament on home soil to Croatia. Expectations are high for Brazil, so expect them to make their mark early the tournament with a comfortable win. Brazil -1 at odds of 1/1 are too attractive. Double your money in the first game.
The recent wet weather around the West of Scotland cannot have had much more of an impact than it has on Glasgow’s speedway club who haven’t been able to turn a wheel over the past two weekends. Having already suffered a couple of call offs due to wet Sunday weather, the Tigers have more recently been forced to additionally postpone Premier League clashes against Edinburgh and Scunthorpe and now have a fixture headache to fit these into an already packed calendar. In an attempt to catch up on at least one of their missed fixtures the club will stage a rare non Sunday fixture
at their Ashfield Stadium home this coming Monday night (9th June, start time 7:15pm) when Berwick Bandits come to town in League Cup action. This re-arranged fixture will pit the on form Borders outfit up against a Tigers team who are still deperately trying to find their best form this season. Tigers will be boosted by the inclusion of latest signing, Australian star Christian Henry, who rejoins the club having previously helped them to a league championship success in 2011. Monday evening’s match is the second at Ashfield in a 24 hour period as the day before the club stage a tribute meeting to Paisley born club legend James Grieves who retired
from the sport last year following a 23 year racing career. Next up for the Tigers will be home and away Knock Out Cup matches against London club Rye House, the team who eliminated Glasgow from the same tournament a year ago. Tigers supporters are hopeful that the home leg of this cup tie (Sunday, 15th June) will mark the track return of superstar French racer Dimitri Berge who has been injured since a spectacular crash at end of April. Wigan sign promising Scottish youngster Aaron Taylor Sinclair the highly rated left back, originally linked with a move to Celtic, has signed a three year deal with English Championship side Wigan.
Sinclair’s contract expired at Partick Thistle after completing more than 100 appearances for the club. He joined from Montrose and quickly asserted himself in the team, helping the Jags win promotion 12 months ago. Speaking to the Wigan official website he said “I can’t thank everyone at Partick Thistle enough for the help
and support they’ve given me and I’m leaving some great friends behind, and a superb set of supporters that I’ll never forget.” Signed by former manager Jackie McNamara, Taylor-Sinclair has had a list of suitors before opting for the Latics with Celtic, Cardiff and Middlesbrough expressing their admiration for the youngster. Sinclair said of Wigan however “When the opportunity to go to Wigan came up, I was very interested, and I feel this is the next step in my career. I want
to meet up with everyone now, get working and prove to the gaffer that he has made a good choice.” Wigan boss Uwe Rosler said this of Sinclair “Aaron fits exactly with the type of player we are looking to bring to the club, young, hungry, dynamic and ready to fit into our culture.” He continued.“He has been a key player for Partick Thistle for a couple of seasons now and he has been on our radar for some time. He has a lot of potential and we are hoping he will take the club forward.”
The following day sees Mexico take on Cameroon, and a 1-1 draw at 11/2 is a great price, but at small stakes. The 13th June sees the first “big” tie of the tournament – Spain v Holland. Two attacking and technically gifted teams, there is bound to be goals, and I see Spain edging out the Dutch. Take Spain to win and both teams to score at 19/5, almost 4/1 for a Spain win, it’s not often those odds are available. The 7th June sees Cirrus Des Aigles compete in the Investec Coronation cup. Currently trading at 1/1, that is great odds considering his form, and with no entry (at time of print) for Ruler of the World, I can’t see anything else being first past the post. By

Hurlford romp to first Junior Scottish Cup Final Groves downed in 8th round
80,000 people witnessed Carl Froch finally end George Groves ambitions of overthrowing him as Super Middleweight champion. Groves much anticipated quick start failed to materialise as Groves was weary of taking too many big hits from the “Cobra” early on. Froch began to put his stamp on the match however, and in the fifth round had Groves against the ropes with a battering of body shots. It still seemed like Groves could pull off a shock and managed to hurt his opponent on a few occasions but in the eighth round it was all over.
Hurlford FC made short work of Ayrshire rivals Glenafton to claim their first Junior Scottish Cup Final in a one sided match at Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park stadium. With the game being billed as a chance for the two teams to exact some revenge and with both teams featuring players who have previously played for the other the stage was set for a thrilling end of the season match. Until it wasn’t. Glenafton seemed to start with promise, and passed the ball well, but three minutes in after gaining
possession, Hurlford galloped up the field, only being stopped by Ryan Chesney downing Ross Robertson in the box for a penalty. Up stepped ex St Mirren and Ayr United forward Steven Kean who coolly dispatched the penalty setting Hurlford on their way to a memorable village cup double. Hurlford United lifted the Junior Scottish Cup while in the same season their amateur cohorts Hurlford Thistle won the amateur cup. A historic double for the small village. Glenafton nearly levelled the match after the penalty, with Alan Kinney

Goalscorer Kean thought he had added to his tally, midway through the first half, but Brian McGarrity pulled off one of the saves of the game to deny the growing in confidence Kean. Celtic have previous dealings with Stromsgodset after purchasing the very impressive Stefan Johansen from Stromsgodset in the January transfer window.
This could suit Celtic’s young players as they will be certainly given the opportunity to impress if Ronny Deila signs.
Celtic still on hunt for new manager Celtic’s wait for a new manager continues as they looked set to do battle with the Norwegian’s Stromsgodset for their highly rated manager Ronny Deila The 38 year old who has been compared to Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp for his attacking style and his passion for free flowing football will cost the Parkhead club in the region of £500,000 pounds in compensation. If the deal concludes with Deila being unveiled as Celtic manager, there will be a feeling of optimism amongst the Celtic fans as they approach a tentative point of the summer, with the Champions League qualifiers beckoning. Allegedly, Deila’s agent, Tore Pederson was seen at Celtic Park on Wednesday for talks with Celtic
supremo Peter Lawell.
It pays to remember, however, that in previous years, there have been rumours of Robbie Keane, Freddie Ljungberg and a whole host of others seen behind the hallowed walls of Celtic Park in what is known as “silly season”. If concluded Deila will formally become the 17th permanent manager in Celtic’s 126 year history. The young Norwegian’s career has seen eyes and ears around Europe stand up and take notice due to his studious nature and the impressive turnaround of Stromsgodset. Ex Celtic player Vidar Riseth has spoken of his admiration for Deila after working under him at Stromgodset, taking the club from regular relegation fodder, to champions of the Norwegian league whilst refusing to sacrifice his philosophy of free flowing, attacking football. Peter Lawell has still refused to comment on any rumours, however sources from Stromgodset have signified that Celtic’s original compensation offer was unacceptable and would need to be increased for them to allow their manager to leave. With both Celtic and Stromgodset facing Champions League qualifiers in the near future, neither will want to lose ground in the race to secure their manager.
