Sitting on my yoga mat this morning, I noticed a giddy, anticipatory feeling flooding my senses as I sought to find my center. It’s because I especially admire our beautiful cover this month that I've been keeping it in my mind’s eye as a focal, calming agent. And, as it came into view, my thoughts raced, instead, through the plethora of stimulating topics and the many professionals we've connected with to feature in this month's edition. While every issue holds some sort of spark that ignites my soul, this one is particularly near and dear to my heart.
Emotional healing is our focus this month, inviting us to take seriously the factors that contribute to storing trauma and angst within the body and explore ways we can unravel it holistically. No one needs data to confirm the impact of the past several years on the psyche of the population and planet. The idea of post-traumatic stress has peaked with professionals and families now familiar with the care needed for anyone who has sustained intense, sudden and life-changing events. From integrative counseling to energy healing, somatic movement, hypnotherapy and more, Natural Awakenings aims to connect you with the local practitioners ready to help you take the first step towards healing. I’m honored to be a catalyst in this process of union and wholeness.
The practice of yoga—a long-time love of mine—is also a potent stress-buster and the topic makes for a fitting match to our feature theme seeing as September is also National Yoga Month. Be sure to check out our special yoga section beginning on page 16 featuring studios in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Yoga’s contribution to mind-body health and fitness is proving to be a reliable defense against age-related loss of mobility, cardiovascular disease as well as depression.
As always, we are grateful for your continued support and engagement.
Yours in Health,
Erica Mills, Publisher

This event welcomes 4- and 5-year-olds for a morning filled with storytelling, crafts and playful activities while parents explore the school’s unique educational approach.

Located on a picturesque 5-acre wooded campus, the school offers a discovery-based, test-and-grade-free learning environment that nurtures children’s natural curiosity and love of learning.

Dr. David Lerner
On the Importance of Healthy Gums
As September is National Gum Health Month, this is an ideal time to learn more about gum disease: what it is, how to prevent it and its symptoms. Dr. David Lerner, DDS, founder of The Center for Holistic Dentistry, has seen mouths from all over the region and beyond, in his Yorktown Heights office. He shares that when a dentist looks inside a patient’s mouth, they can tell a lot more about their health than just how often a person is brushing.
Dr. Lerner, you’ve likened oral health to a window into a person’s lifestyle and habits. Can you elaborate?
Without proper oral hygiene, the bacteria in your mouth can lead to gum disease. Healthy gums play an important role in your overall health. They protect not only your teeth and jawbone; they also prevent infection from entering the rest of your body.
If you’re not taking care of the rest of your body, your gums will give it away. Hormones, sickness, stress, diet, smoking, prescription medicine and more, can all affect your gum health, and that goes both ways. If you don’t take care of your gums, the consequences will stretch beyond just your mouth. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, 20 to 30 percent of Americans have gum disease, putting them at risk for tooth loss, bone loss, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, dementia and pre-term birth, to name a few.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is an inflammation of the surrounding and supporting structures of your teeth. It is caused by a build-up of the byproducts released by detrimental bacteria. You’ll know your gums are not in tip-top shape if you experience redness or other discoloration, pain or soreness, bleeding during regular brushing or flossing. Other symptoms include gum recession, chronic bad breath and/or tooth loss.
None of these conditions are desirable. The longer these symptoms are left untreated, the more detrimental they can become to your dental and physical health.
What’s the best way to maintain good oral health?
Proper oral hygiene is simple. Brush at least twice daily, floss once a day and consider using a water pic. In addition, visit your dentist twice a year for a regular checkup and cleaning. If you’re not taking care of your teeth and gums, you can do longterm damage to your overall health. If gum disease becomes advanced, you may need more extensive gum disease treatments which can be unpleasant and costly.
The Center for Holistic Dentistry, the office of Dr. David Lerner, DDS, is located at 2649 Strang Blvd., Ste. 201, Yorktown Heights, NY. For more information or to make an appointment, call 914-214-9678, email info@HolisticDentist.com or visit HolisticDentist.com. See ad, page 3.
What Might be Making Your Mouth Sick
In his book The Dental Connection, Dr. Lerner explains the gap between the ancient traditions of natural healing and modern dental technology. Readers will discover the principles of biological dentistry as well as his philosophy of structural integration of the mouth and the body called Dental Somatic Integration.
An Energetic Approach to Emotional Healing
by Erin Lehn
Stephen Quinn, the founder of Quit with Quinn, with locations in Midtown Manhattan and Garrison, specializes in helping people overcome addictions to alcohol, smoking and sugar, as well as achieve weight loss and break other unwanted habits quickly and naturally. His treatment programs are simple, painless and boast a 90 percent success rate, thanks to his unique, natural healing approach.
Beyond addressing a wide variety of addictions and habits, Quinn offers energetic and spiritual healing treatments for emotional wellbeing, available in single sessions or as part of a series. “Energetic healing is when a healer connects to divine energies—energies sanctioned by God to assist, cleanse, redirect and realign human beings—and channels these energies into and through another person,” he explains. “It’s a magnificent, divine process that makes you feel as you were meant to feel—excellent.”
Sessions aim to provide a range of benefits, including guiding clients to a more centered, peaceful, spiritually renewed and recharged feeling. Quinn explains that his healing sessions utilize special energetic “checks” to assess which energies are out of balance and determine what’s needed to restore full well-being. “Well-being isn’t just about physical health,” he notes. “It’s about feeling vital, purposeful, peaceful, strong and so much more. These energy checks ensure that each session is perfectly tailored to the individual’s needs.”
Quinn further explains that every human has an aura, an energy field that carries the entirety of our history—our emotions, thoughts, habits, intentions and more. “Humans are processors of energy at every level. Emotional well-being comes from processing
clean energies, shedding the past, finding happiness, and being well-connected to your soul and spirit. Sometimes emotional troubles stem from carrying past hurts, unhelpful thought patterns, or being overly receptive to negative energies.”
According to Quinn, energetic healing brings about soul-level wellbeing. “It rebalances, realigns and washes the aura with high, clean forces that can alleviate emotional suffering and clear out lingering energies from the past,” he adds. “I use a special methodology to identify the nature of emotional suffering and bring in the necessary energies to alleviate it.”
In essence, working with Quinn offers more than just relief from addictions or unwanted habits; it provides a holistic approach to well-being. Through his tailored energetic healing sessions, clients not only achieve their goals, but also experience profound shifts in their emotional and spiritual health. Whether a person is seeking to overcome a specific challenge or simply looking to elevate their overall sense of vitality and peace, Quinn’s expertise and compassionate guidance make him an invaluable partner on one’s journey to a healthier, more balanced life.
Locations: 72 Steuben Rd., Garrison, and 124 E. 40th St., NYC. For more information or to make an appointment, call 914-473-2015, email Steve.Healingny@gmail.com or visit QuitWithQuinn.com. See ad, page 9.

Stopping the Trauma Cycle
Mind-Body Healing Strategies
by Carrie Gauthier
Trauma can strike anyone at any time. Loss, heartbreak, abuse, violence, displacement, accidents, disasters, health problems—the list of possible traumas is endless. According to the National Council for Behavioral Health, 70 percent of adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives, and more than a third of youth exposed to community violence experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma is a factor in most behavioral health and substanceuse disorders. While trauma may be part of our lives, it does not need to define who we are or how we enjoy our lives. Healing from trauma can take time, but it is within reach.
Health Effects
Left untreated, trauma or repeated trauma has a wide range of short- and long-term effects on physical and mental health. Trauma increases stress and keeps the fight-orflight response on elevated alert, resulting in the release of chronically high amounts of cortisol into the body. Initial reactions may include exhaustion, numbness, sadness, anxiety and dissociation. Excessive cortisol increases the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease, digestive problems, muscle tension, headaches, sleep issues, weight gain, irregular periods, anxiety, depression and cognitive challenges.
Cycle of Addiction
Trauma is a common precursor to addiction, because individuals often turn to substances as a coping mechanism for their emotional pain. The use of drugs or alcohol gives trauma sufferers a reprieve from their chronic stress by producing pleasure and reducing negative feelings, and may even slow their central nervous system. Untreated, trauma can lead to a vicious cycle where one condition feeds the other.
Holistic Healing
While medications such as antidepressants and antipsychotics can be effective in treating trauma symptoms, they may fall short in addressing the root cause. An integrative approach to trauma healing adds evidencebased therapies to tackle the underlying causes and promote long-term recovery.
Integrative Psychiatry
James Greenblatt, a board-certified functional and integrative psychiatrist and founder of Psychiatry Redefined, believes in a broader view of psychiatric care. “For example, if our patient is suffering from depression and we were to tell them they should exercise because it’s the best antidepressant we have, that could come off as incredibly insensitive, ruin our chances of gaining their trust and add to their feelings of helplessness and isolation. Alternatively, if we show them how to recover their motivation and energy, that is the way to begin the relationship.”
“Our bodies are different, and our genetics are different. How we react to stress and trauma are different too. I start with lab and genetic tests to see if there’s something I can optimize biologically. Then we supplement any nutritional deficiencies to restore their functionality and increase their energy. These tests also partially help inform the way we design the complementary healing modality plan. This is the piece that gets missed a lot,” says Greenblatt, adding that he tests depressed patients for a vitamin B12 deficiency, which may contribute to depression, anxiety and even psychosis.
Finding a Safe Place
Children are particularly susceptible to trauma, and an adverse childhood experience (ACE) can pose lifelong impacts. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 64 percent of adults say they have had at least one ACE, and 17 percent say they had four or more by age 18. ACEs can rob kids of the magic of childhood, disrupt their development and lead to maladaptive behaviors in adulthood.
Aimie Apigian, a double board-certified physician in preventative and addiction medicine and founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated, started her work with attachment and trauma by working with adoptive families to help their children with attachment insecurity. She explains that childhood traumatic experiences can result in “underlying mistrust—literally wiring a child’s nervous system, brain and body for survival—and overwhelm connection, security and safety.”
Somatic therapy is one modality that Apigian integrates to assist individuals on their trauma-healing journey, helping them connect with their bodies, learn to understand its messages and resolve stored trauma. Apigian explains that just 10 minutes of sequential somatic exercises over 21 days can restore a sense of safety. “For each person, the specific improvement or the degree of improvement will be different, but there will be an improvement as soon as we shift our biology into one of safety rather than of danger.”
By following an essential sequence to safely address stored trauma through somatic exercises, Apigian says people “experience 30 percent less depression, 30 percent less anxiety, 30 percent fewer digestive issues, 30 percent improvement in energy and a 60 percent increase in their feelings of safety. The essential sequence has to start with creating a felt sense of safety, then a sense of support and then opening up while pacing our process. It is such a powerful way to empower them for their lifetime.”
Reaching Our Inner Child
Inner-child work can help develop a dialogue to reach the place where we hold past emotions, memories, beliefs, hopes and dreams. “I tell people when they’re starting this journey, if they put their hands on their belly above and below their bellybutton and just let the hands be there, that will calm down an aspect of us so that it begins to feel safe. It’s called the basic self,” says Dr. Lin Morel, a trauma management specialist and founder of Beyond Words Group. “It’s an aspect of our consciousness that is roughly 5 years old, if you were to give it an age. So it gets very fearful, and if it’s not loved, it will act out.”
According to Morel, embracing the basic self can help people out of some of the darkest corners of trauma. No stranger to childhood and adult trauma herself, she empowers her patients with the W.I.N. protocol (willingness, intention, neutrality), which offers them a fresh approach to handling challenges while developing their intuition and regulating emotions as a neutral observer.
Mindful Self-Regulation
There is growing evidence that mindfulnessbased practices such as meditation and yoga aid in shifting focus from the negative to the positive aspects of experiences. These techniques calm the nervous system and empower individuals to take control of their narratives and become more resilient.
A 2017 review of trials involving 650 trauma sufferers that underwent mindfulnessbased stress reduction, yoga and mantra repetition was published in Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy. The researchers concluded that meditation was an effective treatment for
Laurie R.
MD LAc
PTSD and depression symptoms as compared to the control groups.
A 2022 systematic review of 149 records and 11 peer-reviewed articles published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that those that practiced yoga had an increased sense of self-compassion, felt more centered, developed coping skills, had a better mind-body relationship and improved their relationships with others. Participants also experienced a feeling of safety in yoga classes that included others recovering from trauma.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a mind-body practice that uses a trance-like state of deep relaxation to treat psychological and emotional disorders. Guided imagery, progressive relaxation and suggestion therapy are used to explore thoughts, feelings and memories that may be hidden from the conscious mind. Selfhypnosis techniques are also taught for ongoing support, empowering individuals to continue their healing outside of therapy sessions. A 2016 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis concluded that hypnosis is effective in alleviating PTSD symptoms.
“A miracle, simply, is a shift in the mind. Once you find the root cause of the problem in the mind and bring that to consciousness, we’re shifting from ego to true self, from fear to love, from illusion to truth,” says Matthew Brownstein, executive director of the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy. “Through hypnotherapy, that shift is actually remarkably easy. You can shift as quickly as I can snap my fingers. So, basically, when you change your mind, everything changes. When a decision is made, it stays in place until you choose again.”
Carrie Gauthier is a writer in the healing arts with interests in clinical and transpersonal hypnotherapy.
Stress Relief Coaching
Coach and trainer Brett Cotter, founder of Stress Is Gone, has been helping people for over 25 years recover from trauma and break free from anxiety, overwhelm and emotional pain. His coaching, tools and meditations help to bring peace to the past and allow happiness to flow through all aspects of his clients’ lives. The Stress Is Gone Method helps release emotional energy stored in traumatic memories which helps let go of stress from the source.
“As we let go of emotional pain in our coaching programs and retreats, the frequency and intensity of everyday stress becomes much less,” Cotter confirms. “Personal stress is not our fault, but it’s our problem to fix. Play an active role in taking your life back. Get excited to use our tools the next time you get stressed. Put yourself first and you will be able to access everything you need from within you.”
Through group work, one-to-one coaching, music, movement and meditation, a retreat with Cotter guides participants to swiftly release emotional pain and trauma in a safe group environment. He also offers breakthrough coaching sessions outside of the retreat setting. The Stress Is Gone Membership delivers 24/7 aftercare to clients as well.
For individuals that feel called to help others quickly heal emotional pain and the suffering of trauma, Cotter is teaching a threemonth certification program to become an Intuitive Trauma Recovery Coach from September 9 through December 12 via Zoom. In this program, Cotter helps trainees hone their clinician intuition, teaches eight life-saving transformational tools and offers expert insights about creating a successful coaching practice.
“Step into Stress Is Gone Universe and embody all the love you were originally made of,” encourages Cotter.

Back2Health Yoga, an Iyengar yoga studio in Wappingers Falls, is offering a Yoga for Scoliosis series from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on September 12, 19, 26 and October 3. Additionally, a weekly Back Care and Scoliosis class—for all types of back conditions, including scoliosis—is being added to the schedule on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. beginning on October 6.
“Yoga can help improve posture and alignment by stretching muscles that have tightened and strengthening muscles that have grown weak. This can help to reduce the curvature of the spine and prevent further progression of scoliosis,” explains Cristina Roy, studio owner and certified Iyengar yoga teacher. “Yoga for scoliosis is a growing specialty that provides a holistic approach to ease structural imbalances caused by curves in the spine.”
In the four-week Yoga for Scoliosis series, attendees will learn the foundational skills needed to work with scoliosis, including understanding their curve pattern and how to modify poses. Health Benefits of Yoga
Resolving Trauma and Other Mind-Body Challenges
by Carrie Gauthier
The first known reference to yoga is in the Upanishads Sanskrit texts, written 2,500 years ago. The practice originally comprised breath work, and the physical postures developed over time. According to the global data platform Statista, nearly 34 million Americans practice numerous types of yoga, while science continues to provide evidence of its healing potential.
Calming Effects
With the frenetic pace of life today, many people live in a permanent state of anxiety. Yoga can ease the panic and malaise by activating the parasympathetic nervous system to decrease stress hormones, blood pressure and heart rate.
“Yoga therapy differs from traditional psychotherapy in scope and aim. Rather than delving into traumas, yoga empowers individuals to be present, moving away from
personal narratives,” says Adam Flores, a certified yoga therapist from Port St. Lucie, Florida, specializing in addiction and mental health. “Trained yoga therapists offer grounding techniques and skillful checkins, especially for trauma cases, improving heart rate variability, vagal tone and overall nervous system health.”
Mental Health Benefits
A 2011 meta-analysis study published in Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders indicates that yoga may be an effective treatment option for severe mental illness, with the added advantage of being less toxic than pharmaceutical treatments.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant issue facing the U.S. military and a growing problem for teens that have experienced violent or traumatizing events. Conventional treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy and eye movement
desensitization and reprocessing have shown limited effectiveness due to high dropout and nonresponse rates. On the other hand, studies have found that engaging in yoga and other mind-body practices can reduce intrusive memories, avoidance and emotional arousal symptoms, as well as anxiety, depression and anger associated with PTSD.
Yoga therapy improves critical factors in addiction recovery, including emotional balance, mental clarity and stress reduction. In a 2021 study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, yoga for the treatment of substance abuse disorder was determined to be an effective option.
Popular Yoga Disciplines
Yoga has developed into a variety of styles that can meet the goals and objectives of their practitioners. Some of the more popular formats include:
• Vinyasa: An up-tempo class of postures or poses (asanas) often accompanied by high-energy music that typically results in a consistently elevated heart rate. A 2017 study published in The FASEB Journal found that eight weeks of vinyasa yoga improved physical fitness, relieved stress and improved mental well-being.
• Yin: This form of yoga focuses on gentle, passive stretches held for one to three minutes, offering ample opportunity to release stress and tension. Poses are often supported by props such as bolsters, straps, blocks, pillows and blankets. Long, slow, deep breathing promotes relaxation to help the practitioner hold
each pose for extended periods of time. Yin yoga stimulates and stretches fascia, the thin connective tissue throughout the body, as well as ligaments and joints, resulting in increased flexibility.
• Hatha: This is a classic yoga style involving breathing exercises and poses that are held for longer periods of time than other formats. Although the slower, more meditative pace may seem easier, holding a proper pose for extended periods of time can be challenging for the body and mind. According to a 2018 study in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, 12 sessions of hatha yoga significantly reduced stress, anxiety and depression in women.
• Kundalini: This yoga style prioritizes spiritual growth and awareness, with a focus on energy and chakras. Kundalini awakenings are common via movement sequences, breath work, mantras and chanting. Different studies in 2021 found that kundalini yoga is an effective shortterm therapy for generalized anxiety disorder and can be helpful in reducing the severity of insomnia.
Maintaining Self-Esteem
One of the core tenets of a yogic practice is self-compassion, and it is important to resist the inclination for negative self-talk. To adopt the yogic way is to choose happiness over suffering.
“In my experience, the best healing experiences happened by tapping into the body and unlocking the energies we hold onto,” says Paty Renda, a certified Ananda hatha yoga instructor and co-owner of Premah Wellness, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “I believe in serious work done through fun exercises such as breath, dance, laughter and movement. A simple, slow and deep hatha yoga practice can create profound changes. Gratitude is another very easy, and yet immensely powerful, practice I infuse into everything I do.”

Lion Pose (Horemakhet)
Enter into the Lion Pose by roaring loudly like a lion while sticking your tongue out. I had never done anything similar in other yoga practices until I was introduced to the ancient Egyptian yoga system called Tjef Seema Paut Netru. This pose resonates with me because it allows me to connect with my throat chakra to release and let go of anger, frustration, judgment, self-criticism and other negative energy feelings that do not serve me but, nevertheless, are unexpressed feelings living in my body. I release all of it in my roar and with consistent practice, the negative energy has shifted to cultivate courage and fearlessness in a grounded calm way. It’s a journey! Another plus is that the posture also stimulates the muscles in the face to keep the face looking young and tight.hat it means to age well.

L-shaped Headstand (Salamba Sirsasana)
All inversion poses take us to look at the world from a different perspective; upside down. Many people are uncomfortable with inversions for the very reason that they turn our bodies upside down, often bringing about emotions of facing our fears. The physical benefit is that it brings blood and oxygen to your brain thereby sharpening your mental functions, such as focus and memory. Additionally, it can help in reducing the potential for developing dementia as well. As our heads touch the ground, we are helping to open the crown chakra which is responsible for opening us to our divine power. This is one of my favorite poses because sometimes we just have to see the world from an upside down perspective!

Cow Face (Gomukhasana Variation)
This yoga posture is the easiest and safest way to enhance flexibility, relieve back pain, improve respiratory function and calm the mind. You can use a yoga pillow to correct your posture as you do it. Enhance physical and mental well-being while you take deep mindful breathes which will also help you to stay focused. Tip: if you cannot hook your hands behind your back, try the pose using a strap to help you pull your hands closer together. Hold this posture for 30 second. Repeat on each side.

How would you describe your studio or practice (what’s the vibe)? We are a warm and welcoming community. Since 1989, I have been offering small, multilevel classes, tailored to each person’s concerns and limitations. My specialty is offering yoga to people with special needs, such as normal wear and tear, postsurgery/injury recovery, structural problems, autism and ADHD. In addition, I offer Yoga/ Movement Psychotherapy, which allows people to experience their life challenges in an embodied way. I have been gifted with the ability to attune to people and to facilitate the creation of new possibilities for balance and care.
Yoga, Restorative Yoga to Yin Yoga and Vinyasastyled Yoga. All levels are welcome. Our Vinyasa Yoga classes are for Level 1 and 2, and modifications are shown. We also offer Vinyasa 2 and 3 to practice advanced poses.
How has the practice of yoga changed your life, personally? Yoga has made me less reactive and calmer. I have also become more compassionate to others through the practice. It has, and continues to teach me that I can take what I learn on my yoga mat (to listen to my body) and take that off the mat into my everyday life. I encourage everyone in our Putnam Yoga community to be kind and grateful for their bodies, to be present and to embrace their practice.
What inspired you to open a yoga studio? I was teaching yoga at a gym and realized it was not conducive to the culture I wanted to establish for
a yoga community. I took “the leap” to open a studio 12 years ago, and I haven’t looked back.
How have things changed over the years? A lot had changed in the “yoga world,” with both online and in-person classes, as well as on social media, but I remain hopeful that the true essence and integrity of yoga remain intact.
Do you offer online/virtual classes? Yes. All of our morning and some of our afternoon/evening classes can be attended online. The morning classes also give you the option to be sent a recorded link to practice the class later that day.
Do you offer yoga teacher training? Yes. We offer a 200-hour program. Our next course will begin in September 2025. We are hoping to start a 300-hour program in 2025 as well.
What is new and exciting happening/coming up at the studio this year? We will be offering pop-up yoga classes in Restorative Yoga Nidra and Sound Healing for our students along with workshops for yoga instructors to get their continuing education (CEU) credits. See ad, page 19.
What types of yoga classes do you offer? Our classes are based in the Kripalu Yoga tradition with a strong influence of Viniyoga and Mettler work. The word Kripalu means “compassion”, treating ourselves and others with gentleness and respect. Viniyoga emphasizes a clear, conscious use of the breath with simple movements, deepening the connection to one’s core. Mettler work heightens and integrates the felt sense of the whole body. There are mat and chair classes, for all ages and abilities.
How has the practice of yoga changed your life, personally? Practicing yoga since 1968, yoga has and continues to carry me on a deep healing journey. I share it with others so we can all have personal tools for self-care, healing and increasing freedom.
What inspired you to open a yoga studio? After living in the Kripalu ashram from1988-1989, I received spiritual guidance to start teaching yoga. The next day, I met someone who was in need of a yoga teacher in the Kripalu tradition, and the next week, I started teaching in her home.
How have things changed over the years? Our classes have gotten simpler over the years and more focused on the depth of one’s experience rather than the intricacies of complex physical challenges.
Do you offer online/virtual classes? Yes, and teaching this way has been successfully meeting the needs of my students for the past few years. Students receive ample attention and specific adjustments, and people are attending from all over the world! I offer a free 10-minute introductory Zoom session to help new students set up their virtual yoga space, too. In-person classes are established as the need arises.
What is new and exciting happening/coming up at the studio this year? I will be expanding my availability for sessions with private adults and with individual kids and their parent or caregiver. We will explore how yoga/movement therapy can enhance people’s lives and relationships.
Renewal Through Yoga
Empowerment for Survivors of Sexual Abuse
by Vitalah Simon
Tby BURIN93
he experience of being sexually abused often brings a sense of mistrust towards one’s own body and instincts, accompanied by confusing, disturbing and deeply shattering feelings.
Sometimes, memories of the event(s) are clear. Often, however, they are mentally vague, leaving a deep sense within the body that something terrible has happened. When memories resurface through the body, it can lead to re-traumatization and fear.
How can survivors come home to their bodies, befriend them, and compassionately process memories and feelings as they arise through the body, dreams and insights? The ancient practice of yoga, specifically Kripalu yoga, is a powerful tool for nurturing and encouraging this healing process.
Kripalu yoga strongly emphasizes developing a loving, respectful relationship with the body while building strength and flexibility. Unlike many forms of exercise and dance that treat the body as an object to be commanded, Kripalu yoga encourages appreciation and care for the body as one’s home.
The word “Kripalu” means “compassion.” As we practice the postures, we are invited to be with ourselves in a compassionate manner rather than being harsh, forcing and judgmental. Performing strengthening postures with kindness builds self-confidence and fosters a vibrant, empowered sense of being in one’s body.
We are also invited to develop “witness consciousness”, the ability to observe sensations, thoughts and feelings without reacting to or suppressing them. This development of the Compassionate Witness Within is a key ingredient in Kripalu yoga, making it significantly beneficial for survivors.
Learning to listen to the body’s needs and honoring them, rather than dismissing them, can profoundly shift one’s relationship with oneself. Developing the capacity to experience a range of sensations, feelings, thoughts and images without reacting or fleeing is central to remembering trauma in a way that heals rather than re-inflicts wounds.
Another powerful aspect of Kripalu yoga is the practice of Meditation-in-Motion. In the early stages of healing, this involves gently letting go into whatever stretches the body wishes to explore on its own, without external guidance. It is a chance to allow the body some space to move and breathe
without external impingements. This nurtures the development of self-trust in one’s own body and impulses.
In the later stages of healing, as one becomes more attuned to their body and the capacity to witness is more developed, the body may spontaneously express and release old feelings and experiences without residual trauma. The body is amazingly wise, re-experiencing only what it is currently capable of integrating.
The third key healing ingredient in Kripalu yoga is its consistent affirmation that there is an inner source within each of us, available for guidance, sustenance, love and life. The purpose of yoga is to reconnect and unite us with this source within our beings.
Throughout a Kripalu yoga class, the teacher frequently reminds everyone—including themselves—of this inner vitality and the
opportunity to come home to the center of one’s being. This center is inviolate and cannot be destroyed by trauma. Unprocessed trauma may temporarily block access to the source, but it is always there, whether we can feel it or not.
Practicing Kripalu yoga in a group with other survivors can be supportive and synergistically healing. There is a common understanding of mutual vulnerability regarding feeling our bodies and learning to love them. Because everyone in the room shares similar concerns and challenges, the space becomes very safe to explore new ways of being with ourselves and releasing the past.
As our bodies become our own, we begin to feel safer in the world, developing tools to face our fears, reclaim our beauty, and reconnect with a source of inner strength.

Social Eating Survival Guide
by Alora Frederick, RDN, LDN
Food and community are inextricably linked. As Michael Pollen so aptly puts it: “Food is not just fuel. Food is about family, food is about community, food is about identity. And we nourish all of those things when we eat well.” Health and wellness are greatly impacted by the enjoyment of food in a community setting as much as they are impacted by the type of food eaten. There are ways to enjoy food in community-based gatherings that still honor what the body needs to feel good.
Regulate Blood Sugar
Start with keeping blood sugar regulated. Skipped meals, under eating or going too long inbetween meals creates dysregulated blood sugar or unfavorable swings of it. With harsh dips in blood sugar, the body will then do everything it can to raise the level back up, often in overeating and having cravings for carbohydrate-rich foods. Further, the stress of low blood sugar drives us to eat rapidly. Quick consumption of food can cause indigestion, bloating and not feeling satisfied after a meal. This can be prevented with some mindfulness around blood sugar. The key to balanced blood sugar is to eat enough and to eat a balance of fiber, protein, carbs and fat. For example, a salad with chicken before a pizza party would provide fiber and protein, while the pizza provides carbs and fat—a win-win situation.
Don’t Skip Meals
A common pitfall is skipping meals or under eating on the day of a wedding, festival or holiday because there’ll be a feast later on. But skipped meals will result in overeating and dysregulated blood sugar. Thanksgiving is a perfect example of this where many individuals skip breakfast, often leading to fatigue and overeating later in the day.
Pack Snacks
If it’s unclear what will be served at the gathering, simply bring snacks to have on hand: nuts or seeds, an apple, a protein bar. Nourishment enables us to be energized, present and fully enjoy the social aspect of the community-based gathering.
Stay Relaxed
The state of one’s nervous system directly impacts digestion and food choices, especially during gatherings. Any barriers that prevent feelings of being relaxed and present while eating should be removed whenever possible. Take a breath of fresh air outside, put the plate down and come back to it, prioritizing a sense of calm in the body before eating.
Prepare for Dietary Restrictions
Another common stumbling block when eating at large gatherings is having dietary restrictions. The limitation is both in the foods available to consume and the limitation of participation, or not being able to break bread with others. If abstaining from alcohol, have a seltzer water with lime wedges instead. If gluten free, bring some gluten-free cookies to enjoy while others eat cake. More often than not, dietary restrictions stem from gut-related issues. Someone may be avoiding dairy because it causes unpleasant GI symptoms; another person may be avoiding refined sugars because it exacerbates their depression. These can be sensitive topics that many people don’t want to justify or explain, especially at a gathering. Regardless of the reasoning, no one is owed an explanation for our food choices. Have conviction and confidence when being offered foods that cannot be consumed. Keep it simple by saying “Thank you for offering, but I know I won’t feel well if I eat that” or perhaps “That looks delicious, but I’m perfectly content right now.”
A sense of inclusion and the experience of eating food together is paramount to the human experience and for overall wellbeing. Utilize these tips to both honor the body and our inherent need for connection through food.

Healing Power of Therapy Dogs
Benefits for Post-Traumatic Stress Sufferers
by Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NAN
Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy (AAT), has long been recognized for its therapeutic benefits across a range of mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Psychiatric service dogs are empathetic in nature and intuitively respond to human emotions. These capacities allow them to provide comfort and support precisely when it’s needed, often without the need for verbal communication. These dogs are not just pets but vital partners in the journey toward mental and emotional healing.
PTSD Recovery
Interacting with psychiatric service dogs can reduce anxiety and stress levels by increasing the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and stress reduction, while decreasing cortisol levels, which are linked to stress.
Psychiatric service dogs provide a calming presence, which is crucial for reducing anxiety and hypervigilance, common symptoms of PTSD. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology involving 134 veterans with service dogs found that trained skills such as calming and interrupting anxiety are highly valued by veterans with PTSD, suggesting their critical role in daily PTSD management. The study also noted that untrained behaviors of the dogs are often perceived as more beneficial than their trained tasks, highlighting the intrinsic value of simply having a dog as a companion.
A 2022 study of 82 post-9/11 military veterans published in PLOS ONE reported that their psychiatric service dogs helped them with PTSD by performing calming actions and interrupting the veterans’ disturbing behaviors and thoughts during anxiety episodes. Researchers noted that all of the tasks the dogs had been trained to perform were used daily by the veterans, providing benefits for nearly all PTSD symptoms, except amnesia and reckless behavior. The humananimal bond and untrained qualities, such as companionship, also significantly improved the participants’ symptoms and quality of life.
Psychiatric service dogs enhance emotional regulation and improve social interactions for PTSD sufferers. Their non-judgmental and accepting nature creates a safe space for individuals to explore and manage difficult emotions. Additional research reported in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology demonstrated significant improvements in emotional and attentional regulation
among adolescents with PTSD that were asked to participate in a one-year dog-training program.
Challenges for Service Dogs
While the therapeutic benefits for the handlers are significant, the European Journal of Psychotraumatology study also noted that the dogs in the training programs exhibited increased anxiety and decreased attention. This highlights a critical aspect of AAT: The welfare of the animals must be considered alongside the therapeutic benefits. Training programs need to ensure that the dogs are not overly stressed or burdened by their roles.
Practical Advice for Prospective Handlers
Prospective handlers of psychiatric service dogs should choose programs that prioritize the well-being of both dogs and humans through training, support and follow-up care. Engaging with a psychiatric service dog is a significant commitment that requires handlers to invest time in training and bonding with their dogs, as well as managing their emotional and physical needs to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship.
Understanding the legal rights pertaining to psychiatric service dogs, including accessibility in public spaces and accommodations, is crucial. Handlers should educate themselves about local and national laws that protect their rights and those of their service dogs.
Psychiatric Service Dog
Obtaining a psychiatric service dog involves careful consideration of the therapeutic benefits versus the potential stress on the animal. Look for reputable programs that train dogs to assist individuals with PTSD, while also prioritizing the welfare of the dogs and properly matching dogs and handlers.
The integration of psychiatric service dogs into mental health care offers more than just companionship; it opens a dynamic pathway for healing and managing PTSD symptoms. As we continue to explore and understand the unique bond between humans and animals, it becomes increasingly clear that dogs are not only cherished pets but also invaluable partners.
