This month’s autumnal equinox signals another “turning of the wheel” and brings to life the momentum of changing perspectives and altered energy patterns for a new season of fresh intentions. It is the time of year when desire for adventure naturally leads me to new points of view, and fall’s arrival always beckons a deep yearning within me to simply explore. Do you share a motivation to transition along your journey, both inwardly and outwardly? How fortunate for us that our September edition is the perfect blend of wellness travel and our annual yoga issue; a winning combination, if you ask me!
As a Westchester native and current resident of Dutchess, I personally appreciate and take stock of the abundance of thriving wellness and retreat centers in our region. From Omega, in Rhinebeck, boasting 250 peaceful acres, to e Center at Mariandale’s sacred riverfront grounds, in Ossining, we truly are gi ed with so many places locally to nd inspiration and stillness. Added to that, the ample number of ourishing yoga studios o ering classes, workshops, trainings, and single-day or weekend retreats, mean the possibilities for growth and enlightenment are endless. Surprisingly, many of these local studios and centers host extended journeys to exotic locations, o ering inclusive services, as well.
Choosing to take time to allow your mind, body and spirit a deep dive into your own self-care is what a personal journey to wellness is intended to be. It can happen in a tropical, faraway place or even at home in your favorite chair. For some it will be a time of self-re ection, for others it means the freedom to relax, and still for a few more it will be a spiritual journey. Whether you mindfully set aside an hour, a day or a week or more, the de nite result will be improved well-being. So, if you have been visualizing a way to unplug, I’m con dent you’ll be pleasantly surprised at all you nd in this issue.
Our feature story and a vast array of wellness travel ideas begin on page 22. We’ve created a special section showcasing the local yoga community starting on page 36 and it is chock full of exciting updates, studio pro les and more. For fun, try experimenting with a few of the Yoga for Health poses that local instructors share with us beginning on page 44. Personally, I tend to gravitate to Warrior 2 followed by Peaceful Warrior for a break during the workday or on the trail when I am enjoying time in nature.
Along the lines of movement and embracing the new, check out our Inspiration department article on page 20 called “Embrace the Winding Road,” by Marlaina Donato. It closes with this statement: “Honoring the sanctity of change is the key to ful llment.” As I look to the future, I believe that says it all.
Yes, I am embracing change. With a sixty- h-year milestone approaching on my healthy horizon, I am excited to begin planning my retirement from publishing and eager to enjoy the next adventure in life with my love. I have felt honored and ful lled in the role of publisher for Natural Awakenings magazine for the past 16 years, and it is time to seek a successor for the Westchester, Putnam & Dutchess edition to joyfully hand the baton to. Please contact me if you feel aligned with my passion for supporting the health and wellness of our local communities and are interested in purchasing this turn-key business.
Let’s embrace the unfolding of each day with gratitude and know that, no matter where the path may lead, it is all about enjoying the journey as much as reaching a destination.
Happy Trails,
Dana Boulanger, Publisher

Your CBD Store Marks
Third Anniversary
Cathy Parlitsis, owner of Your CBD Store, in Mount Kisco, invites the community to their ird Anniversary Celebration, from 4 to 6 p.m. on September 21. ere will be refreshments, prizes, discounts and swag bags.
“We’ve been so blessed with both the amazing customers who entrust their health to us and the local businesses who have been incredibly supportive,” enthuses Parlitsis. “One of our greatest achievements was being voted Best CBD Store in Westchester.”
When asked what prompted her to open the business, Parlitsis shared that she was su ering from arthritis and had tried many things, including CBD, but nothing seemed to help until she used SunMed CBD, carried exclusively in Your CBD Stores. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t available in Westchester, so I went to Connecticut, and within a week of using it, it changed my life,” she recalls. “I felt it was a moral obligation to bring it to Westchester.”
Although Parlitsis says that it might not have seemed like the best business decision to open a business right in the middle of a pandemic, she felt it was the right thing in the right place at the right time. “Our products were a much-needed respite from the craziness of the world, and that belief was con rmed,” she notes.
With regard to the future, Parlitsis a rms, “Our mission has always been to help people, and we will continue to approach every day with that goal.” She also credits the loyal dedication of Drew, her store manager.

Sucralose May Damage DNA
Sucralose is an artificial sweetener 600 times sweeter than table sugar. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its use in baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatins and frozen dairy desserts. A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of North Carolina found that ingesting sucralose may cause the formation of a genotoxic chemical called sucralose-6-acetate. Genotoxicity refers to the breaking up of DNA, resulting in damage that could potentially contribute to health problems. Researchers also found trace amounts of this dangerous chemical in sucralose itself, even before it was consumed and metabolized.
The study included eight projects that exposed human blood cells to sucralose-6-acetate, which researchers found induces the expression of genes associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and cancer. Exposure to certain concentrations of sucralose-6-acetate and sucralose also appeared to impair the gut lining, and sucralose6-acetate inhibited certain enzymes, which could interfere with the body’s ability to metabolize medications.
Impacts of Radio Frequency Radiation
The introduction of 5G mobile phones and infrastructure has given rise to concerns about their safety, as more than 1 million new antennas will be required in the U.S. Currently, the Federal Communications Commission and International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection consider only the thermal effects (tissue heating) from electromagnetic frequency(EMF) exposure as potentially harmful. A group of researchers led by Ariel University, in Israel, evaluated the non-thermal effects of exposure to EMF radiation on biological systems and human populations by reviewing in vitro [outside a living organism] and in vivo [inside a living organism] studies, as well as clinical studies on electromagnetic hypersensitivity and the epidemiological evidence for cancer due to the action of mobile-based radiation exposure. Although data derived from these studies was inconsistent, the researchers found supporting evidence that this radiation may contribute to cancer, endocrinological, neurological and other adverse health consequences. The researchers call for a more targeted, interdisciplinary research effort by national governments to ensure public health.
Rise in Children With Autism
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated statistics on the rate of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which has been on the rise. The data is based on reviews of developmental evaluations and records from medical and educational service providers.
One in 36 children was diagnosed with autism by age 8 in 2020, or about 2.8 percent of children, up from one in 44 children in 2018 and one in 150 children in 2000, when the CDC first began tracking ASD prevalence in this country. Autism was also 3.8 times as prevalent among boys as girls, and for the first time the prevalence was slightly lower among white children compared to other racial and ethnic groups, which is a reversal of racial and ethnic differences observed in the past. However, Black children with ASD remain more likely than white children with ASD to have a co-occurring intellectual disability.
The CDC partially attributes these patterns to improved screening, awareness and access to services. They highlight the importance of accessible and equitable ASD diagnostic treatment and services for children of different backgrounds and call for more research to comprehend the emergence of diagnostic differences across states.

Dental Hygienists Bridge the Gap Between Great Health and Dental Care
by Jayne Levy-Ries
While many people dread the thought of going to the dentist, modern-day dentistry has come a long way. From new numbing techniques to various techniques that help patients relax, going to the dentist is no longer the bane of anyone’s existence. More importantly, the medical world finally understands that the mouth is not separate from the rest of the body—something that biological dentists have understood for decades.
Equally important is the role of dental hygienists in dental practices. Patients are often unaware of all the ways their dental hygienist monitors their health and well-being. From screening for high blood pressure to educating patients on everything from gum disease to nutrition, dental hygienists help bridge the gap between great health and great dental care.
To begin with, many dental hygienists screen for high blood pressure before certain procedures. This is an important step. If a patient is experiencing unusually high blood pressure, treatment may be postponed until their blood pressure normalizes. In some cases, patients are unaware that they have high blood pressure, so a referral to their physician may be necessary.
Along the same lines, research now shows a direct link between inflammation in the mouth and certain cardiovascular issues directly affecting heart health. Gum disease affects many adults and some children, and a dental hygienist can inform patients of their risks. Advanced gum disease creates high inflammation and poses a higher risk. It is becoming more common for dental hygienists to collaborate with cardiologists and vice versa. Studies also show that gum disease plays a role in diabetes and can increase the risk of pre-term birth. Dental hygienists are trained to treat gum disease and can teach patients techniques that can reduce inflammation in the mouth. Since dental hygiene is a preventive practice, it may also
be surprising to know that many dental hygienists are knowledgeable in nutrition. Eating a proper diet that is high in fiber and low in sugar helps to ensure better dental health as well as overall health. Patients struggling with poor eating habits can consult with their dental hygienist to improve their diet and eating habits which may also cut down on dental and medical bills.
Additionally, dental hygienists routinely screen for oral cancer and can often recognize sleep issues and disorders. Patients should not hesitate to ask their dental hygienist about these concerns.
lightfieldstudios/123rf.com
The dental hygienist is a patient’s advocate in the dental office. They not only educate patients and explain treatment plans, but they’re also available to answer any questions that arise during a dental visit. They even offer handholding, if needed, during anxiety-provoking dental treatments.
All dental practice patients are encouraged to take advantage of what their dental hygienist has to offer.
Jayne Levy-Ries, RDH, BS, is a Registered Dental Hygienist with over 40 years of experience. She practices dental hygiene at The Center for Holistic Dentistry, office of Dr. David Lerner, DDS, located at 2649 Strang Blvd., Ste. 201, Yorktown Heights, NY. Harvesting Solar Power in Space
Global Warming May Threaten Heart Health
As temperatures rise due to global warming, scientists are worried about how extreme heat may impact heart health. Research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology warns that air temperatures as low as 93° F may lead to a steady increase in heart rate under humid conditions. This increase, referred to as cardiovascular heart strain, can occur even before a person’s internal temperature starts to rise.
The study involved healthy participants engaging in light physical activity inside an environmental chamber. As the chamber got hotter, participants’ heart rates increased and then plateaued. However, when the chamber continued to heat up, heart rates began to rise again and continued to rise even after the experiment. This rapidly increased heart rate indicates cardiovascular strain.
A related study published in Physiological Reports reported that even at rest, heat can affect the heart. Researchers found that at 50 percent humidity, the heart rate of participants at rest was, on average, 64 percent higher at 122° F than at 82° F. These findings are concerning, as extreme heat events are becoming more common around the world and could be lethal for vulnerable and older populations.
Space-based solar power (SBSP) is the concept of collecting solar energy during a space orbit and beaming it safely to a fixed point on Earth. Recently, the British government sponsored an SBSP competition to award more than $5.5 million in grants to the most promising innovators of this novel technology, which may be the key to producing cost-effective, cleaner, more renewable energy. The goal is an array of spacecraft to collect sunlight and convert it into microwaves before beaming them to a receiver on Earth, where it is converted into electricity.
Because space has no atmosphere, the sunlight is undiluted, which means that a space-based solar panel would be able to generate more energy than a comparable panel on Earth. The other potential benefit to collecting solar power in space is that there are no day-night cycles, cloud cover or seasonal variations to contend with.
Among the grant winners were two British schools: Cambridge University, which is developing ultra-lightweight panels that can withstand high radiation levels, and Queen Mary University, which is working on a wireless system to safely beam the energy to Earth. In related research, scientists at the California Institute of Technology were able to successfully transmit power wirelessly in space and to beam detectable power to Earth using an experimental spacecraft.

Hummingbirds That Don’t Pollinate
Every day, hummingbirds must drink nearly their body weight in nectar to survive. Most hover above their food by beating their wings up to 80 times a second and inserting their beaks into the tubes of flowers.
As they consume their food, grains of pollen stick to their foreheads, pollinating the next flowers they encounter.
Scientists from the University of Connecticut recently identified 66 species of hummingbirds that may be harvesting nectar without pollinating flowers by using tiny toes to cling to a nearby branch rather than hovering above. These birds, which have a longer hallux claw to hold on to a stem and a shorter beak to get in closer, are able to save energy and obtain nectar from previously inaccessible flowers by poking into the side of the flower tube. This method, however, appears to prevent pollination from occurring.
Light-Emitting Technology on the Horizon
Researchers from Japan and Germany are developing eco-friendly light devices that use a single layer of organic film mixed with light-emitting materials and an electrolyte. These light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEC) are gaining attention due to their simplified structure and because they consume less energy and cost less than the organic lightemitting diodes (OLED) currently on the market.
The research team is using molecules called dendrimers, new organic materials that can extend the life of LECs. The electrolyte in an LEC can be made from inexpensive materials, such as biomass-derived cellulose acetate, a compound used in clothing fibers and eyeglass frames, whereas OLEDs use rare or heavy metals. Researchers are also using graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms, as the electrode. While the progress is exciting, the developers of this new lighting technology note that more research is needed before it goes to market in order to make the devices brighter and capable of illuminating in three primary colors.

Eco Travel 101
While checking places off the travel bucket list, keep in mind these traveling tips for leaving small footprints across the Earth.
REDUCE FARAWAY TRAVEL
Burning up jet fuel to fly to places represents a large affront to the environment. Staycations are the most eco-friendly. The shorter the distance we travel from home, the lower our carbon footprint. Because takeoffs and landings use the most fuel, fly direct whenever possible.
AVOID OVER-TOURISM
Some sites are so popular that they are prone to being overrun and abused. To avoid becoming part of the trampling herd and minimize tourist impact, visit the most popular tourist destinations during off-peak months or avoid them altogether. A green travel agent can help find less-trafficked destinations, book hotels with green certifications and secure eco-friendly tours and adventures.
SAY NO TO DISPOSABLE PLASTICS
Put together a travel kit that doesn’t include throwaway plastics. Pack soap, shampoo and conditioner bars, as well as soap sheets that fit in a wallet, lather up with water and disintegrate. Invest in a reusable travel bottle—collapsible types use less space—along with a filter or purifier, in case of non-potable
water. Pack a few lightweight cloth bags for souvenir shopping.
GO PAPERLESS
Most transportation tickets can be purchased online and stored on a phone, with no paper needed. The same is true for maps, brochures and guidebooks.
RESPECT RESOURCES
Help the local economy by using less of the area’s resources. Turn off the lights and air conditioning when not in the hotel room. Take short showers. Don’t get the bed remade with fresh sheets every day, and reuse towels as much as possible.
SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
To support community talent, purchase from local artisans for unique gifts. While a chain restaurant might
seem fun, a local restaurant is more likely to serve authentic dishes. Ask residents where they would go, or hire a guide that lives in the area.
USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Rental cars and taxis use more resources and may not give the best travel experience. Taking a local bus or train across town helps the environment and provides a great way to experience the culture. Biking and walking are even more environmentally friendly and allow for some of the best meandering and sightseeing.
LEAVE NO TRACE
Leave nothing behind. Place trash in receptacles, or, better yet, carry a bag and pick up trash to beautify the landscape.

Understanding Light Pollution
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AND ACHIEVABLE REMEDIES
by Sheryl DeVore
best works/ShutterStock.com
At Montana’s Medicine Rock State Park, visitors have a rare opportunity to look up at the night sky and see an awe-inspiring display of planets and constellations, as well as the Milky Way, our spiral-shaped galaxy that contains about 100 billion stars, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is a magni cent sight, but those of us that live in or near cities with arti cial lights beaming out of buildings and cascading over parking lots and highways may never get the pleasure.
“Because of light pollution, up to 80 percent of people living in North America are unable to see the Milky Way where they live,” says Sabre Moore, executive director of the Carter County Museum, in Ekalaka, Montana. “Medicine Rock State Park is designated as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, and the Carter County Museum has committed to safeguarding it in perpetuity.”
The park’s sanctuary certification was issued by the nonprofit International DarkSky Association, based in Tucson, Arizona, with a grassroots network throughout
the world. The organization offers five dark-sky designations based on stringent outdoor lighting standards and relies on the help of community stakeholders, such as Moore, who serves as a volunteer dark-sky preservation advocate. At Medicine Rock, she helps host sky-parties for people to enjoy the celestial show and learn about the negative impacts of light pollution.
reats Posed by Arti cial Lighting
e skies around cities are hundreds, if not thousands, of times brighter than they were 200 years ago, according to 2017 research published in Science Advances. In addition to robbing us of the Earth’s nocturnal skyscape, outdoor illumination negatively a ects many plants and animals, including humans. Humanmade lighting threatens approximately 30 percent of nocturnal vertebrates and 60 percent of nocturnal invertebrates, and it “is increasingly suspected of a ecting human health,” writes scientist Christopher Kyba, lead author of the report.
e mechanisms by which these life forms are a ected vary. For example, when birds migrate, they y into buildings that are lit up at night. Scientists estimate that at least 100 million bird deaths in the United States annually are related to light pollution. “Bobcats and bats rely on the cover of darkness for their survival and are also being a ected,” says Moore, adding that arti cial light interrupts human circadian rhythms, thereby affecting our REM [rapid eye movement] sleep, which is vital for our well-being.
e ight patterns of night-active insects are disrupted by outdoor lighting, which partially explains their declining numbers worldwide.

A Simple Switch Saves Turtles
It is possible to reduce these negative impacts, as the Sea Turtle Conservancy has proven. By getting people to modify the positioning and types of lights used in buildings along Florida and Texas beaches, the nonpro t has been able to rescue loggerheads, leatherbacks and green sea turtles from the brink of extinction.
Female turtles have evolved to instinctively lay their eggs on the beach, allowing the hatchlings to emerge at night and head toward the light of the horizon into sea. Humans, however, have interrupted this natural course with arti cial light emanating from the windows of high-rise condominiums, garden spotlights and outdoor lamps.
“When hatchlings erupt out of their nests in the middle of the night, the bright horizon today is in the direction of the land. ey go the wrong way into roads, parking lots, swimming pools or dunes, where they are run over by cars or subject to predation,” explains David Godfrey, executive director of the conservancy.
Researchers have discovered that lights with longer wavelengths that are amber, orange and red in color do not disturb the turtles, as opposed to outdoor xtures that emanate shorter-wavelength blue and white light. According to Godfrey, the good news for these sea creatures is, “LED can be programmed to emit the speci c wavelength you want.”
e conservancy works with coastal counties, beachfront property owners and others to switch to turtle-friendly lighting, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation o en provides grants to pay the retro tting costs. As a result, Godfrey reports, there has been increased nesting in areas with changed lighting and greater survivorship by the hatchlings.
“We are saving tens of thousands of hatchlings every season, and homeowners are seeing a reduction in their utility bills. People love it. ey’ve found the longer wavelengths are more pleasing to the eyes,” Godfrey asserts. “Since we know that light pollution a ects various other forms of wildlife and humans, the managed use of lighting at night is something that everyone should pay attention to.”
Tips to Address Light Pollution
■ Avoid blue-light xtures.
■ Turn o unnecessary lights in the evening.
■ Use dimmers, timers and motion detectors.
■ Close curtains and blinds at night to stop indoor lights from beaming to the outdoors.
■ Visit Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky, an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History,
in Washington, D.C. (NaturalHistory.si.edu/exhibits/lights-out).
■ Get involved at GlobeAtNight.org, a citizen-scientist group that monitors light pollution.
■ Support dark-sky designated areas (Tinyurl.com/DarkSkyPlace).

Life’s transitions can feel like a broken bead necklace, with scattered pieces of ourselves waiting to be restrung. When we pack up our lives to move into a new home or organize neglected drawers, we may stir up clouds of bittersweet memories. Watching our kids leave the nest, we might wonder where the time has gone. As a new self struggles to emerge from the chrysalis, our hormones might take us on a rollercoaster ride before unveiling breathtaking wings.
At times, we have one foot on shi ing sands and the other in midair, waiting to connect to solid ground. Inspirational author Neale Donald Walsch says, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”—wise words for those of us that are halfway across the rickety swinging bridge of change.
Breaking our own rules can gi us with a brand of freedom that we’ve only imagined. Seasoned travelers and weekend adventurers might agree that setting aside plans and maps invites unforeseen magic. Ordering something we cannot pronounce on the menu, turning le instead of right or revisiting an old dream might be a wonderful decision.
When we take our hands o the wheel and oat into possibility, the universe smiles and nudges our secret longing for something new, something more harmonically aligned with our own unique frequency. Meeting life in the moment, wherever we happen to be, can be a challenging but rewarding spiritual discipline.
When we take a deep breath and turn the page, life deepens in color and gets more interesting. When we resist the well-meaning way that has been carved out for us and choose to go o the beaten path despite the uncertainty ahead, we will meet ourselves more deeply, no matter what happens. Perhaps this is the meaning behind it all—the magical door we seek. Honoring the sanctity of change is the key to ful llment.

TRAVELING WITH PURPOSE
NINE DESTINATIONS FOR SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT
by Kiki Powers
Throughout history, humans have embarked on pilgrimages in pursuit of wealth, good fortune, divine intervention, spiritual enlightenment and other blessings. ese journeys could be considered the earliest manifestations of one type of adventure travel, while today some of these would be de ned as spiritual tourism.
e notion of “spirit” refers to both our conscious and subconscious minds. A spiritual practice, then, is any activity that enables us to step away from the noisy parade of life and explore our emotions, where any concept of the human spirit resides. is spiritual self-careincludes any ritual or practice that helps connect us with our most authentic higher self.
Travel can be an amazing way to explore metaphysical interests with new people, sites and scenes, in order to invigorate the senses, stimulate the imagination, refresh the mental framework and invite new ideas and personal insights. Some places qualify for spiritual travel by virtue of their natural beauty, or due to some historical, mythological or
religious signi cance. For a trip that fosters mind-body-spirit self-care with a generous portion of adventure, check out these sacred sites.
Mount Shasta
is Northern California treasure is believed to be a powerful spiritual vortex that has long captured the imagination of spiritual seekers. By some accounts, Mount Shasta is reputed to be the Earth’s root chakra, in keeping with the belief that, like the human body, planet Earth possesses chakra energy centers.
is majestic mountain, which is associated with healing, transformation and spiritual awakening, is a stunning backdrop for the many spiritual retreats and workshops o ered locally that include meditation, energy healing, yoga, sound therapy and other restorative modalities.
Spiritual guide Andrew Oser, who has led Mount Shasta retreats for decades, says, “I can help you allow Mount Shasta’s transforming energies into the core of your very being, and by utilizing my direction to harness the mountain’s heightened vibration, you will feel it almost magically dissolve all of your fears.”
Sedona, Arizona
Surrounded by red rock canyons, whimsical forests and waterfalls, Sedona’s natural beauty inspires spiritual re ection. It is also part of one of the most powerful energy vortexes in the world and a New Age Mecca for those seeking transcendence through energy healing, yoga, sound baths and a host of other spiritual o erings.

Making the Most of a Spiritual Vacation
by Linda Sechrist
Phil Cousineau, author of e Art of Pilgrimage: e Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred, specializes in creating meaningful travel experiences and leading tours to sacred sites. “All pilgrimages are a search for meaning and purpose, which is why I prepare groups on how to travel deliberately, ways to experience it and how to integrate the experiences into daily life so they are not forgotten,” he says.
Cousineau recommends getting o the bus, putting away the video recorder and simply walking into the landscape. “Remind yourself why you traveled to there,” he says. “Take the deepest, most probing question in your life with you. Chronicle your answer for two to ve minutes daily. At the site, look for one detail that represents your entire visit that day and take a photo. Use active imagination to open your heart, rather than waiting for something to happen. Don’t compare your travels. When you are comparing where you are with where you’ve been, there’s no meaning—it becomes just one more purposeless tour.”
To share the experience with traveling companions, Cousineau says, “I begin mornings over breakfast with a long conversation that includes any stories about where we’re visiting. We’re reminding ourselves that we’re forming a small community by traveling together and studying the same stories so that we can continue our long conversation over dinner. is is where the meaning starts to form and deepen.”

Stonehenge, England
A Local Wellness Destination
by Sara Gurgen
Every year, more than a million people make the spiritual voyage to Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, England. Archaeologists are still seeking a plausible explanation as to how the stones weighing multiple tons were transported to the site. This ancient masterpiece of prehistoric engineering remains shrouded in mystery to this day.
ere is further spiritual charm in myths around the purpose of Stonehenge. People ask, “Was it intended as a funeral monument, an astronomical observatory, a tool to predict the seasons or a sanctuary where the sun was worshipped?”
Stonehenge is believed to be an epicenter of Earth energy with as many as 14 ley lines converging on the site—powerful channels of energy associated with places of ancient and primordial signi cance.
It is plain to see that when we are ready to invest in our spiritual well-being in a fun, mind-expanding way, many mindbody-spirit travel options abound.

Recipes at Enrich Mindful Eating
Savor the Present Moment
HOW TO ADD MINDFULNESS TO MEALTIME
by Veronica Hinke
There is a sharp di erence between grabbing a fast-food burger at the drive-through and paying full attention to a home-prepared meal. For many of us, busy schedules and harried lifestyles get in the way of a more introspective dining experience. Mindful eating—the practice of slowing down, appreciating the present moment and becoming consciously aware of the ingredients, avors, aromas and textures that we consume—can be a worthwhile meditative endeavor.
“If we’re mindful of what we eat, when we eat and how we eat, we are supporting the vibrancy of what our bodies are so capable of,” says Dr. Carrie Demers, medical director at the Himalayan Institute, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. “Studies show that when people stop to sit down and chew their food carefully, they not only eat
less, but they actually get more enjoyment out of their meal. Food tastes better when we are actually present with it.”
“When we slow down, we become more aware,” says Shawngela Pierce of Seek Within You, who leads spiritual retreats in Sedona, Arizona. “Sometimes people eat out of habit, but when we become more mindful, we start to notice patterns that, once understood, can help us harness a whole new way of eating and living.”
Mindfulness can begin before we even sit at the dining room table, “when we aren’t distracted by watching television or something else, and we take the time to think deeply about what we are preparing,” Pierce says, adding that calm focus can even help us when shopping for ingredients at the farmers market or grocery store.
e Ann Wigmore Natural Health Institute, in Aguada, Puerto Rico, o ers a mindful eating class that invites diners to practice with a bowl of Ann Wigmore’s Energy Soup—a recipe by the institute’s founder containing an array of vegetables, legumes and grains. “It’s ful lling, nutritious and cleansing, all in one,” says Executive Director Carolyn Marin. “Key in what makes this a mindful eating meal is that while it is pulsed in a blender, it is not a liquid, and it requires chewing. Also, it is served at room temperature, which helps with mindful eating and proper digestion.”
While so music plays in the background, students of the mindful eating class are instructed to slowly pick up their spoons, place a serving of soup in their mouths, set their spoons down and unhurriedly chew 30 times. “ ey look out at the ocean, breathing carefully, eating consciously and slowly, taking their time and getting their body out of ghtor- ight mode and into healing mode. It can be very emotional,” Marin explains. “Mindful eating also aids in digestion because the person is chewing the food fully and allowing it to spend more time in the mouth, where digestion begins. Many of our guests have experienced noticeable improvement with acid re ux, stomach aches and nausea.”
Four Aspects of Mindful Eating
Marc Demers, head chef at e Himalayan Institute, says there are four aspects of mindful eating—right food, right time, right quantity and right attitude or environment— each of which can be individualized and honed to deepen awareness and improve health. Here are his recommendations.
RIGHT FOOD: Eat fresh, whole foods that are easy to digest and give energy. We need mindfulness to notice which foods support us and which cause indigestion, mucus or fatigue.
RIGHT TIME: Our bodies naturally digest better in the daytime and when we feel hunger. Stop eating at least three hours
30 Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess NY Edition WakeUpNaturally.com conscious eating
Asier RomeroShutterStock.com
prior to bedtime. We need mindfulness to notice the di erence in digestion between eating ice cream at 3 p.m. and at 11 p.m.
RIGHT QUANTITY: Eat just the right amount of food—enough to feel satis ed and fuel the day’s activities, but not so much that we feel lethargic or sleepy. Mindfulness helps us notice our hunger and fullness, as well as how we feel a er we eat.
RIGHT ATTITUDE OR ENVIRONMENT: Sit down in a peaceful place, ideally with people we like, rather than eating while driving, working or walking. Don’t eat when stressed or angry. If we are upset, it is better to take a moment to mindfully breathe and calm the nervous system before eating. e goal is to welcome the food with gratitude and openness.
Take It Slow and Steady
For those struggling to commit to mindful eating, Pierce says, “Start practicing mindful eating with the food that you enjoy the most. Don’t try to do it all at once. Just try one meal each week as a start. Make it a priority. Set a reminder if it helps. Have fun with it. Make it a playful practice. Say, ‘Today is going to be my mindful eating day.’ at opens the gateway to something that will become an integral part of your spiritual life.”

Cranberries
ONE OF NATURE’S SECRET SUPER FOODS
by Donna Massaro
Cranberries are one of nature’s secret super foods. ese pretty little red berries—which are full of antioxidants—protect our cells from damage by unstable molecules called free radicals. One of the most common medicinal uses for cranberries is to drink cranberry juice to block urinary infections. Regular consumption may also help prevent plaque formation on teeth, kill H. pylori bacteria which can cause stomach cancer and ulcers, and some credit cranberries with preventing tumors from growing rapidly or even starting in the rst place. Cranberries also increase HDL (good cholesterol) and reduce LDL (bad cholesterol).
e History of Cranberries
Cranberries were rst used by Native Americans. Along with blueberries and the Concord grape, they are one of North America’s native fruits. e early settlers discovered that these bitter berries drew blood from arrow wounds. ey would combine them with deer meat and consume the mixture as a survival food which they called pemmican.
e word cranberry derives from “ craneberry” named by the early European settlers in America because the expanding ower, stem and petals resemble that of a crane.
ey were also known to have been called bear berries, as bears had been seen feeding on them quite o en.
Where are Cranberries Found?
Cranberries are found in acidic bogs throughout the Northern Hemisphere and grow on low creeping shrubs or vines which can reach up to seven feet long. Cranberries are pollinated by bees and are initially white, turning a deep red when they are fully ripened. Harvested in the fall, they are wet picked a er being constructed upland in a shallow water table. e beds do not remain ooded but are regularly irrigated to maintain soil moisture. ey are ooded in the autumn to activate harvest and then again in the winter to protect against low temperatures.
How to Cook with Cranberries
Although cranberries are very tart alone, they taste delicious boiled with raw sugar, cooked down with apples, or made into a countless variety of sauces and chutneys.
Donna Massaro is the owner and chef at e Freight House Café, located at 609 Rte. 6, in Mahopac, NY, where she serves local, organic food and works hard to exclusively buy ingredients in the U.S. Next, she shares her Apple Cranberry Chutney recipe, just in time for autumn eating.
A PPLE CRANBERRY CHUTNEY
YIELD: 2 CUPS
Gather: A good, sharp knife, cutting board, zester, measuring cups and a saucepan
2 medium apples (2 cups, peeled and chopped)
1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
½ cup chopped onion
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
⅓ to ½ cup of brown sugar
1 Tbsp orange zest
1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger
1½ tsp cinnamon
Small pinch of ground clove
Put all ingredients into a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce to a low simmer. Cover and cook for 20 minutes. Uncover and cook for a few minutes more, to reduce any remaining liquid.
Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
Pour over turkey, chicken, use as a side dish or make a toasted crostini with a spread of brie cheese and add the chutney to the top.

Yoga in the Adirondacks Announces 2024

Yoga in the Adirondacks
(YITA)—a yoga shala located at e Divine Acres, a private, sustainable family farm in the Adirondack State Park—has announced their 2024 seasonal retreats: Fall into Winter, from January 12 through 14; Spring Renewal, from March 22 through 24; Spring into Summer, from June 21 through 23; and Autumn Transformation, from September 20 through 22.
“YITA is located in a small hamlet in Warren County of the Adirondack Park, upstate New York. Our yoga studio view of Eleventh Mountain captures the unique wilderness within our protected forever wild forest preserve—6 million acres of mountains, forests and waterways through Mother Earth,” notes yoga instructor
Rhodella Hughes, E-RYT 500, YACEP, who owns and operates the shala and the farm.
When asked why yoga is important, Hughes shares a famous phrase from the Bhagavad Gita: “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self” and then went on to say, “Self equals consciousness, energy of the soul. Consciousness travels through the body to the mental to the spirit, a loving devotion to the divine. Science supports this journey through research and studies, telling us that yoga bene ts our liveliness.”
In addition, Hughes points out that yoga increases exibility, strength and resilience; reduces and relieves stress and anxiety; improves our mental health, quality of life and balance; reduces in ammation; protects and boosts our immunity; and increases self-esteem, restful sleep and bone health.
“Let us activate our brains through a yoga practice—a true mind-body connection,” enthuses Hughes.

Yoga on Vacation
SIMPLE POSES AND TIPS FOR TRAVELERS
by Carrie Jackson
Travel can broaden our perspective of the world and take us on breathtaking adventures. ese new experiences, however, o en come with unexpected mental and physical challenges, stresses and anxieties. By incorporating yoga into the itinerary, we can cultivate a sense of peace, allowing us to show up as our best selves. From asanas a er long hours of sitting to breathing exercises while waiting for a ight, yogic techniques can open the body and mind, letting us enjoy both the journey and destination.
According to Jenny Kaufman, a Chicago-based yoga professional who leads international retreats and manages yogaview, in Wilmette, Illinois, a mindful yoga practice is di erent from stretching and is available for anyone, regardless of physical exibility. “Yoga encompasses well-being, mindfulness, breathing and spiritual awareness. It leads you to pull inward, no-
tice what and where you feel a sensation, and mindfully progress to another asana, or pose. Increased exibility might be the byproduct of the practice, but that is not the point,” she explains.
“Long layovers, changing time zones and di erent foods can confuse our
internal clocks and wreak havoc on sleep and digestion,” Kaufman says. She recommends some poses to mitigate disruption and bring renewed vigor to body and mind: “To wind down before bed, incorporate cooling postures, such as Seated Forward Bend and Child’s Pose, that encourage the body to fold in and rest. For a burst of energy, try warming poses and heart openers, such as Cobra, Sphinx and Backbends. If space is limited, stand with ngers interlaced behind the back and gently press the pelvis forward. If digestion is slowed, simple twists and Wind-Relieving Pose can help move things along.”
Yoga for Back Care
Scoliosis
Kim Larkin, a New Jersey-based certied yoga teacher, leads international retreats as a way to share heart-opening cultural adventures with other curious beings. “My main practice when travel stress is creeping in is to drop my attention into my breath,” she says. “Just focusing on one breath cycle at a time will help to settle my attention into my body, begin to quiet my nervous system and bring me to a more grounded place. It can also be helpful to count the breath, as in Sama Vritti Pranayama or “box breathing”. Like a square, box breathing has four evenlength parts to it. Inhale to a count of four or ve; hold the inhale for the same count; exhale to four or ve; and hold at the bottom of the exhale. Repeating this as needed helps to calm both the mind and body.”

Margi Young, an Oakland, California-based yoga instructor and retreat leader, says, “When traveling, it’s natural to want to jump into a busy schedule of exploring new destinations, but starting the day with a few conscious breaths and Sun Salutations can set the foundation for a more grounded experience. is allows you to be your best self and move through your journeys with less anxiety and fresh eyes. Or, get o the traditional yoga script and take a few minutes to put on your favorite tunes and dance to get into your body.”
Young also recommends incorporating yoga throughout the day while traveling to reset from any physical and mental stress. “In an airport, nd a secluded place you feel comfortable doing a Downward Dog. Instead of putting your hands on the ground, you could put them on the seat of a chair. is grounding pose lengthens the spine, opens the shoulders and draws your attention inward,” she explains. “On a plane or bus, reaching your arms overhead gives space to condensed organs; ankle circles help increase circulation; and seated Figure Four opens up tight hips,” she advises.
If time allows, Young also suggests nding a yoga studio and popping in for a class. “Taking a yoga class in a new country or city can provide an immediate sense of community and is o en a uniting gateway to other connections when navigating new and di erent surroundings,” she asserts.
Yoga helps to develop patience, an aptitude that Kaufman says can serve us throughout our travels. “Mindfully moving through a practice encourages us to listen and be patient with our bodies, and it provides valuable feedback on where we are and what we need. Instead of jumping into a deep stretch, purposefully encourage the hamstring to open up and notice how that feels. Cultivating that patience for ourselves changes the chemistry in your brain and becomes a microcosm for how you put yourself into the world. You’re able to be more patient with ight attendants, travel partners and everyone else you may encounter,” she shares.
For Larkin, practicing yoga while traveling cultivates inner peace. “ e stress of travel can bring out the worst in us, but we can do our best to stay kind and considerate by keeping in mind the yoga teaching of Ahimsa: non-harming,” she says. “Most things work out, even if you lose your luggage or miss your ight. And most people are good, wanting to help you nd your luggage or rebook your ight or commiserate when your vacation didn’t go quite to plan.”

Vrksasana (Tree Pose)
e regular practice of yoga supports stress reduction, better mental clarity and emotional resilience, a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression, increased present-moment awareness, and improved sleep.
Additionally, there is a profound spiritual and philosophical component to yoga. Yogis are o en on a journey of self-discovery due to yoga’s introspective nature. Yoga is a practice that fosters a sense of unity and interconnectedness with oneself and the world, o en leading to inner peace and contentment, regardless of external circumstances.
To celebrate National Yoga Month, Natural Awakenings is excited to introduce this special spread highlighting many local yoga teachers who enthusiastically share their favorite yoga poses and the many health bene ts o ered by each pose. We encourage all our readers to sign up for their classes and discover the wild, wonderful world of yoga.
Tree Pose is part of a repertoire of yoga poses studied for improving bone quality and strength. Vrksasana safely stresses and strengthens the leg and hip bones without impacting the joints. It improves concentration, balance, stability and strengthens your core. It also strengthens the tendons and ligaments of your ankles and feet. Yoga and strength training are two allies to ght sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) and osteoporosis. Together, yoga and strength training are a double win, and research clearly shows they improve bone mineral density. Amenia Yoga has classes that emphasize strong bones and muscle strength in person and online, live. Women need all the muscles they can get, and together, we will improve our health span and rewrite the story of what it means to age well.

Ustrasana (Camel Pose)
Ustrasana is a lovely and safe way to open the chest, stretch the shoulders, lengthen the front of the hip and thigh and also stretch the abdominals. is pose also strengthens the back of the body which will help us to maintain good posture. e mind is also challenged in this pose because working in a backwards plane isn’t typical in our day to day activity. So, orienting ourselves while backwards and upside down is great for developing our proprioception.

Marichyasana Variation (Humble Flamingo)
Humble Flamingo (or Fallen Flamingo Pose) is a fun variation on Pyramid Pose which provides an intense hamstring stretch and also strengthens your hands, wrists, shoulders, arms and legs. e core muscles must ignite so the body can hold the pose for a few rounds of breath. I love to give my students more advanced variations during my Happy Hour Yoga class. Once they try a harder version of any particular pose they may already be comfortable with, they can then start to incorporate it in their practice once their body lets them know it’s ready for a challenge! I try to write my sequences with new, fun variations, hoping to accommodate all the di erent levels of yogis in the room.

Tri Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana
( ree Legged Downward Facing Dog) is pose is a variation of Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog). It is both strengthening and opening for the shoulders, hips, and legs. It is frequently used in energizing classes as a stand-alone posture or as a transition pose. e pose can be held for a longer amount of time to build upon that strength and exibility, or it can be used to glide from Adho Mukha Svanasana into lunges, warriors, wild things, and more. It’s one of my favorites!
(Peaceful or Reversed Warrior) is is one of the basic poses that I always love to incorporate in my daily practice. Its name is powerful—symbolizing strength and tranquility simultaneously. e bene ts of this asana are numerous; from grounding to heart opening. It strengthens the quadriceps while opening the hips as well as lengthening the psoas. Holding this pose long brings about a great side stretch for trimming the waistline. It is also a gentle back band that’s great for reversing the unwanted e ects of long days of hunching over desktops or computers. Peaceful Warrior is also heartopener, promoting love and forgiveness in the practitioner.

DOG PARENTING
HOW TO SHAPE BEHAVIOR AND STRENGTHEN OUR BOND
by Karen Shaw Becker, DVM
A 2022 study in the journal Animal Cognition found that authoritative pet parents, de ned as those with high expectations for their dogs, have the most positive in uence on the behavior and cognition of their pets. e study’s co-author, Monique Udell, an associate professor at Oregon State University, says, “We found that pet parenting style does predict patterns of dog behavior and cognition. is is an important nding because it suggests that dog owners who take the time to understand and meet their dog’s needs are more likely to end up with secure, resilient dogs.”
Pet Parenting Styles
A range of factors will determine a dog owner’s parenting style, but in general there are three categories:
■ Authoritative (high expectations, high responsiveness)
Although the saying is that dogs are our best friends, canine companions are a lot like kids, too. In the same way that parenting styles impact children’s mental and emotional development, so do pet parenting choices. How we guide and care for our dogs can shape their behavior, responsiveness, attachment, cognition and overall well-being.

■ Authoritarian (high expectations, low responsiveness)
■ Permissive (low expectations, low responsiveness)
Dogs with authoritative owners are the most likely to have secure attachment styles, be highly responsive to social cues, prefer to be close to their owner over an unfamiliar person and be more independently persistent in solving problems.
Understanding the HumanCanine Connection
Dogs track human eye movements, linking them with intent. One study has suggested

that when a dog’s gaze follows a human’s, it’s not simply a re ex; rather, it is associated with the human’s “communicative intent”. A dog’s ability to interact with its owner at this level helps strengthen the bond they share.
According to study co-author and behavioral scientist Lauren Brubaker, research into human-dog relationships parallels human psychological research in that, just as a child’s development, mental health, intellectual success, social cognition, attachment and job performance are in uenced by their upbringing, humandog relationships in uence a dog’s behavior and cognition.
A positive connection between humans and their canine family members is mutually beneficial on many levels. Science has revealed a demonstrable chemistry between dogs and their humans, and, in fact, daily interactions with our canine companions have a measurably beneficial effect on our biochemistry, thanks to a hormone called oxytocin, sometimes called the “hug hormone” or the “love chemical”.
A Japanese study involving 55 dogs and owners proved that when we share loving visual connections with our dogs, everyone bene ts. e researchers found that people whose dogs looked upon them for two minutes or more showed increased levels of oxytocin and claimed to be happier than owners whose dogs regarded them for a minute or less.
In a 2003 study conducted at the University of Pretoria, in South Africa, researchers had dog owners focus solely on their pets for half an hour, talking with them as they stroked, scratched and petted them. e owners’ blood was drawn at the beginning and at the end of the 30-minute session.
e scientists found that blood pressure decreased in the human subjects, while oxytocin increased, as did other bene cial hormones, such as betaendorphins, which are associated with both pain relief and euphoria; prolactin, which promotes bonding between parent and child; phenylethylamine, which is increased in people involved in romantic relationships; and dopamine, which
heightens feelings of pleasure. ese hormones were also elevated in the dogs, which suggests the feelings of attachment are mutual.
As we see, there is a demonstrable positive chemistry between dogs and humans. Not only can our pet parenting style shape a dog’s behavior, it also has po-
tential wellness bene ts for us mentally, physically, emotionally or all the above.

Helping Kids Cope
GUIDING CHILDREN THROUGH TRAUMA AND ANXIETY
by Carrie Jackson
and to ask for help, the less power fear and anxiety will have over their brains.”
According to Dr. Carol Penn, author of Meditation in a Time of Madness: A Guidebook for Talented Tweens, Teens, eir Parents & Guardians Who Need to rive, “Fear is a natural phenomenon. It’s how we’re hardwired to survive as a species. However, when fear turns into anxiety and the body enters a chronic state of hyperarousal with raised cortisol levels, it can be debilitating. is shortens attention spans and disrupts the hypothalamic loop, which deals with creating short-term memory, causing kids to lose the ability to engrain long-term learning.”
Children today are facing ever-increasing amounts of stress and anxiety. In addition to academic pressure, bullying and family dynamics, kids are worried about navigating social media, climate change and school shootings. While a certain amount of stress is normal and healthy, too much can cause debilitating physical, emotional and cognitive e ects.
A 2010 study published by the National Scienti c Council on the Developing Child, at Harvard University, reports that persistent fear and chronic anxiety can have lifelong consequences by disrupting the developing architecture of the brain. Parents can help anxious kids by modeling stress-management and problem-solving techniques, and inviting their children to talk about their feelings.
Acknowledging and Coping With Fear
While each child’s anxiety is unique, the themes are o en universal. “Children fear not being liked, being made fun of, failing when they try new things, getting hurt, losing a loved one, being le out and not tting in. If this list seems familiar, it’s because they are all the same fears adults have too,” says Michelle Nelson-Schmidt, an author and illustrator of 32 children’s books, including What If I Know My Feelings? and e Whatif Monster series “It is debilitating when we don’t talk about our fears and anxieties. Children o en don’t have the vocabulary to verbalize their fears, so they bottle it up, letting fears get bigger and scarier. e earlier they learn that it’s okay to be scared, to talk about their fears
Penn notes that kids can pick up on their parents’ anxiety, so it is imperative to model self-care and create a soothing home environment. “Children are unsettled when their parents are unsettled. By observing body language and energy, kids can intuitively gauge when something is wrong, and they o en make up stories about why,” she explains. “Teaching kids to take regular breaks throughout the day for relaxed awareness encourages them to notice a mind-body connection. Take two minutes before getting out of the car or starting a new activity to pay attention to your breath and observe and label pain or tension in the body. If you are hunching your shoulders or clenching your jaw, make mindful adjustments to reset and settle the body and nervous system.”
Overcoming Anxiety
A er a Traumatic Event
Last year, Highland Park, Illinois, experi-

enced the improbable yet possible event of a mass shooting during their Fourth of July parade. “While the community worked to rediscover a sense of safety, our school focused on the necessary structures and initiatives to help students heal and rebuild,” says Holly Fleischer, the assistant principal of diversity, equity and inclusion at Highland Park High School. “As we started the school year, we recommitted to a focus on social-emotional learning by teaching strategies to manage emotions, sustain healthy relationships, develop an awareness of self and make healthy decisions. By practicing coping skills with everyday stressors, our students are learning to develop feelings of control, safety and resiliency as they navigate a traumatic experience or event.”
According to Fleischer, “While there is little control of one’s outside world and circumstances, kids can nd calm in a storm through strategies like deep breathing, recognizing your ve senses, listening to music, reaching out to loved ones, using ice packs for sensory intervention and giving oneself a strong bear hug. Students will get to know which ones work for them. It is also essential to disrupt maladaptive coping mechanisms like avoidance, which do not allow for the practice of these healthier ways of self-management.”
Building Resilience for the Future
“ oughts are the language of the mind, and feelings are the language of the body,” Penn counsels. “When stress develops, have kids draw three pictures identifying what it looks like for them. e rst is a picture of themselves right now; the second is the challenge they’re facing; and the third is how they will feel when the challenge is resolved. is gives children control over their feelings, allowing them to self-soothe and creatively work through challenging situations. When children learn to be adaptable, exible and imaginative critical thinkers, they can respond to even the darkest days and move forward with grace and hope.”

“Local Chiropractor o ers Advanced Treatment for Chronic Pain”
Dear Friend,
Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in townthey usually say, “oh yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Gertner. I’ve seen stories for years…” Well, that’s me.
“When I was in college I was injured playing football. I began developing severe and constant pain in my neck and lower back. A er chiropractic, and PT were not e ective in relieving my symtoms…I had surgery. Over the next 20 years I had surgery 3 more times, but I still su ered with horrible pain. I was referred to Dr. Gertner by a friend. On the rst visit he performed a computerized diagnostic scan that located my problem. I had a pinched nerve. A er only a few visits most of the pain in my neck and back was gone for the rst time in decades. I fell like I have my life back!” – Rob C
Now let me tell my story. When I was in chiropractic school in Atlanta, Georgia, I had a severe injury to my lower back. For over a year I su ered with horrible pain. I was getting adjusted three times a week by traditional chiropractors without any results. I was less than a month away from graduation and I became very frustrated. Forthe last 8 years I had studied to become a chiropractor, and now my life was put on hold by a condition that chiropractic is supposed to treat.
A colleague of mine introduced me to a doctor who specializes in an uniquetype of chiropractic called NUCCA. In the entire world there are less than 200 NUCCA doctors. NUCCA can be considered to be like “engineering of the spine”, specializing in spinal correction without surgery. e NUCCA correction gently restores the skull, spine, and pelvis back to its proper position. is takes pressure o the nerves and allows the body to return to its natural, healthy state. Patients are typically seen 1/3 as o en as traditional chiropractic and most patients receive permanent relief.
Immediately a er the rst visit I felt relief, and in one week I was completely out of pain. I spent the next two years working as an intern inthat Atlanta o ce.
In 2002 I returned home to NY. In the last 20 years we have quickly become one of the busiest NUCCA o ce worldwide. It is common for patients to travel well over an hour each way for care. We have seen patients that travel from all over the world, as well as 48 of the 50 United States. Because of our passion for helping people and our commitment to excellence, we quickly became one of the busiest Upper Cervical Chiropractic o ces worldwide.
It’s strange how life is, because people now come to see me with all types of problems. With this NUCCA procedure I have tremendous results with the type of patients that visit traditional chiropractors like neck pain, back pain, and headaches, but the majority of my patients have more severe neurological conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Trigeminal Neuralgia, MS, Parkinson’s, and Seizures, just to name a few. I explain to my patients that I am not curing them of anything, but the NUCCA procedure is able to help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with the disease.
Here’s what some of my patients had to say:
“I used to su er with severe facial pain called trigeminal neuralgia I’ve seen my MD, Neurologist, and Acupuncturist with limited results. I travel from East Hampton, LI because this is the only treatment that has helped me” – Pat G
“For the last few years I have su ered with MS. I’ve been su ering with tremors, poor circulation, neck and back pain, loss of coordination, fatigue, asthma and insomnia. I have been under care for six months and without medication, Dr. Gertner has helped me control my MS. My tremors are gone and I am able to keep my hands steady. I am also seen great improvements in all my original symptoms including asthma—all without drugs!
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is make a speci c spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. e power that made the body, heals the body! We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
Make A Believer Out Of Me O er – You shouldn’t go bankrupt to nd out the solution to your health problems. If you bring in this article, you can receive my computerized diagnostic test and new patient exam with x-rays if needed for $27. is exam could cost you $300 just for the computerized test alone. But, please call right away because this o er expires on September 30, 2023, and I don’t want you to miss out.
Why am I doing this? My purpose is to get as many people well through NUCCA chiropractic care as I possibly can. I want to become your chiropractor if you need me.If a er the exam I think I can help you I’ll tell you, If not I’ll personally refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional.
Satisfaction…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care. You’ll get professional care that’s a ordable. My quali cations…I graduated from Hofstra University before nishing my Doctorate at Life College in Marietta, GA. I’m Board certi ed in the state of New York, and by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. I’ve been entrusted to take care of more than 12,000 patients…newborns, pro athletes, and celebrities that you may know, and I have delivered over 500,000 spinal corrections. My assistants are Daniela and Vanessa and they are great people. Our o ce is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. Our o ce is called Upper Cervical Chiropractic of New York and is conveniently located at 311 North St in White Plains. Our phone number is 914-686.6200 or you can visit our website at www.nuccadoctor.com. Call today for an appointment to start getting well!
