WSIU RADIO MOURNS LOSS OF TALENTED STUDENT REPORTER WSIU RADIO has lost one of its own. We mourn the loss of SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY student ALEX KIERSTEAD [photo at left, courtesy of Facebook] who died in a house fire in Carbondale in the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 23. The 20-year-old Aurora native was double-majoring in Journalism and Political Science, and was a features reporter for WSIU Radio. The newsroom was shattered when the news broke. Alex was a gifted reporter who brought compassion, a keen curiosity, and a genuine love of people to his stories. He loved storytelling. Alex had a knack for identifying the nugget of a story idea and framing it in an original way, researching the topic and finding interesting people to interview, and then assembling all the parts into a compelling and insightful news feature. His abilities were apparent early on in his time at WSIU Radio.

Andrew Staff, President, Carbondale; Susan Tulis, 1st Vice-President, Carbondale; Robin Haller, 2nd Vice President, Carbondale; Martha Cropper, Secretary, Murphysboro; Mary Ann Kellerman, Cape Girardeau, MO; Carol Burns, Candis Isberner, Sumera Mahkdoom, Scott McClatchey, Greg Petrowich (Ex-officio), Marleigh Stewart, Carbondale; Skyler Taylor, Carterville; Kristina Benson, Du Quoin; Mike Ruiz, Herrin; Tom Britton, Makanda; Andrea Brown, Marion; Jolene Falat, Lane Hudgins, Susie Phillips, R. J. Robertson, Murphysboro.

Alex’s interests and story ideas varied at WSIU. He covered U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on a visit to SIU, tagged along with mail carriers as they delivered holiday cards and packages, peeked behind the door of an underground music venue, and explored southern Illinois’ Garden of the Gods when the natural area was commemorated in a newly-issued quarter. An avid hiker, Alex reveled in the beauty of the region, whether on assignment or in his free time, and explored natural gems like Garden of the Gods, Giant City Park, Inspiration Point, and the Lake Kinkaid Spillway. In the weeks since his death, we’ve talked a lot about Alex and his legacy at WSIU. We are devastated that his time with us was cut tragically short, but are so grateful to have known him, even for a little while. We will miss Alex’s energy and curiosity, his genuinely kind spirit, and his joy in doing “the job” and will strive to incorporate the compassion, enthusiasm, and insight he shared into all of our stories going forward.

“From the day he started working here, you could tell Alex was exceptional,” said KEVIN BOUCHER, Community Engagement Producer for WSIU. “As I worked with him, I could see (the intelligence) in his eyes. I could see he was already thinking well ahead of what I was saying. He was amazing.” Alex began his tenure at WSIU during his first semester at the university. Although he had very little experience, he demonstrated a skill for turning the most basic information into a story that could pull in a listener. Many listeners have enjoyed a public radio “driveway moment” thanks to Alex’s storytelling talent. His ability to listen and relate to the people he covered brought out fascinating stories that others might have missed.
