WSIU GIVES PRESENTATION AT SCIENCE IN THE SOUTH CONFERENCE

Over 300 people joined WSIU and the SOUTHERN ILLINOIS COALITION FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES at Family Reading Night on Thursday, January 26 at Northside Primary Center in Herrin, Ill., a KinderClub Kick-Off event. Families enjoyed Ready Freddy and PBS KIDS activities for children who will begin kindergarten in Fall 2017. Ready Freddy, SuperWHY, and Clifford costume characters joined shelter dogs in greeting guests. WSIU demonstrated how to use PBS KIDS Playtime Pads, which include PBS KIDS videos, clips, songs, educational games, and more.

WSIU staff members KEVIN BOUCHER and BETH SPEZIA led K-12 educators on an exciting tour of free science resources at SIU Carbondale’s Science in the South Conference on Jan 20. The annual conference gives teachers opportunities to build their teaching skills, expand their content knowledge, and network with other teachers. Teachers said that WSIU’s presentation, “Get to Know Your World Through Public Media,” was

relevant to new Illinois Learning Standards, well organized, and easily understood. Comments from session participants included: “I loved knowing about and seeing the PBS website/ videos. It is very important for students to know about nature, sounds, etc.” “This was an awesome connection to what SIU offers. Great resources!” “I was excited to explore PBS LearningMedia.”
