WSIU Radio’s EARTH DAY SPECIAL explores the history of the Late Woodland-era Native Americans who constructed the legendary Cahokia Mounds around 600 CE. Located a few miles west of Collinsville, Ill., the historic site contains the remains of the largest and most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico. In 1250 CE, the city was larger than London. WSIU’s KEVIN BOUCHER talks with BILL ISEMINGER, Assistant Site Manager of Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, about what we know – and don’t know – about this ancient culture.

As they strive to help mothers and families cope with the demands of childbearing, disability, disease, and social prejudice, the Poplar medics must make choices – and fight battles – of their own.

HOME FIRES returns for a final season of stories about a rural English town on the verge of WWII. As the separation from their husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers becomes more painful, the women rely on one another and the friendships forged through village life. It will take calm, fortitude, and creativity to bring the diverse women of the village together, and to help the community survive what is to come.

8-10PM THE GREAT WAR tells the rich and complex story of WWI through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators, and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The six-hour, three-night event also explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native-American “code talkers,” and others whose participation in the war has been largely forgotten.
