A NEW JOURNEY FOR LISA MORRISETTE WSIU RADIO listeners have spent many waking hours with the voice of LISA MORRISETTE. For more than two decades, her soothing tones have permeated WSIU’s airwaves during onair pledge drives and on countless station IDs, promo spots, underwriting credits, and other announcements.
Lisa Morrisette. Photo: Monica Tichenor.
After 20 years of service to WSIU, SIU, and the region, Morrisette is embarking on a new journey that will take her across the country to KPBS in San Diego, southern California’s leading public radio station, where she will serve as the Operations Manager.
Morrisette began her tenure with WSIU as a student employee before joining the station’s professional staff as Operations Assistant in 1997. Over the years, she has worn many hats, from classical music host to interim director of the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service, WSIU’s reading service for the blind and visually impaired. For the past seven years, Morrisette has served as Operations Manager, overseeing the station’s automation system programming and operations, underwriting and promotional production, student employee and volunteer training, and on-air pledge drives. “It’s a little lonely in the hallway this week,” says JEFF WILLIAMS, WSIU Radio’s General Manager. “Lisa was a student worker getting ready to graduate and transition to a full time staff position when I returned to WSIU in January of 1997. We worked together through every high and low, serving WSIU listeners behind the microphone and behind the scenes for the past 20 years. The position at KPBS is a fantastic job opportunity for Lisa, and although I’m incredibly excited for her, she will be missed. A member of the family has left the fold.” “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve the listeners and viewers of WSIU Public Broadcasting for the last 20 years,” said Morrisette. “Thank you for everything. I will miss you all greatly.” We wish Morrisette all the best as she embarks on this new life chapter!

WSIU RADIO listeners contributed nearly $16,000 during our SPRING 2017 COMMUNITY SUPPORT CELEBRATION held March 27-31. Funds raised will help WSIU to continue its commitment to independent indepth journalism, preserving the arts, and enriching the lives of listeners. Thank you to the 20 community volunteers who helped host live pledge breaks during the week-long fundraiser! “One of the highlights of pledge week is getting to hear directly from our listeners,” say WSIU Radio General Manager, JEFF WILLIAMS. “It’s a great time to connect and receive valuable feedback about the station and how we are making a difference, as well as how we can better serve the community.” Thank you to everyone who made a donation during our Spring Membership drive. ILLINOIS’ BUDGET CRISIS NEARS SECOND ANNIVERSARY
Fridays 7:30pm May 5-June 2 ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS is back to update viewers on efforts to end the state’s nearly two-year-long budget crisis. “Illinois’ fiscal house is teetering on the brink of insolvency and junk bond status as the fight between Governor Bruce Rauner and the Democratic leadership of the General Assembly nears its second anniversary without a complete state budget,” said host JAK TICHENOR. Senate President JOHN CULLERTON (D-Chicago) and Senate Republican Leader CHRISTINE RADOGNO of Lemont negotiated a “Grand Bargain” package of tax increase and reforms to break the impasse earlier this year, but it has not passed the Senate and faces an uncertain fate in the House. House Democrats approved a stopgap plan to help the state’s financially struggling public universities and social safety net agencies on a partyline vote in April, but the Governor is threatening to veto the bill if it reaches his desk. The first-term
Republican wants either a full-year’s spending plan that contains parts of his business-friendly “Turnaround Agenda” in exchange for new revenues or to be given the authority to make cuts on his own to balance the budget without new taxes.

Nichols has been employed by Adler for 22 years. She currently leads the Adler’s ‘Scopes in the City’ telescope outreach program and serves as the education program manager for the Adler’s Far Horizons high altitude ballooning and space program. Nichols also has written several astronomy books for children.

“Finding a way out of this mess is made even harder by the fact that politicians from both parties are already setting their sights on next year’s general electon for statewide offices,” said Tichenor. Founded in 1986, ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS is television’s longest running continuing coverage of the Illinois General Assembly. It is a joint production of WSIU-TV, WTVP Peoria, and WILL Urbana-Champaign. Carterville Jr. High Students Have Great Expectations During spring semester, the STUDENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL at CARTERVILLE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL participated in a video production project led by WSIU’s outreach team of BETH SPEZIA, Outreach Coordinator, and student employees AARON HORN, KEVIN RUNYAN, and ALEXANDER TODD-DIAZ. The goal of the video project is to communicate positive behavior interventions and support to their classmates. Working in teams and using their personal cell phones, students recorded eight videos on topics such as anti-bullying, responsibility, and cybersafety. On March 3, they traveled to SIU to use editing tools in the NEW MEDIA CENTER of the COLLEGE OF MASS COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA ARTS. Students learned about sound, animation, and media programs with help from faculty and staff, including ALICIA GUEBERT, TODD HERREMAN, ANTONIO MARTINEZ, JAY NEEDHAM, KEVIN PENROD, ERIC ROWAN, ROBERT SPAHR, MARK ST. GEORGE, and MARK STOFFEL. “This project was far beyond my expectations, and I am so thankful for the hard work that was put in by WSIU faculty and students,” said a participating teacher. “I believe the students learned so much and had fun while doing it.” Students were fully engaged in creating the videos and were excited about the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in video production and editing using the latest technology at SIU.

“Editing was fun,” said one of the 13-year-old students. “I liked adding music and transitions.” “I liked getting to act. The video ended up looking more professional than I thought it would,” said another 13-year-old student. The school will organize a screening party for the videos in May.
