Great uncertainty in our state over the past year has caused me to rethink when, and how often, I use the word incredulous.

Whether or not the state budget stalemate has been resolved by the time you read this, many non-profit organizations, along with institutions of higher education in Illinois, have suffered organizational harm that will take many years to turn around. Some agencies may never recover. Not-for-profit agencies are generally chartered when a need is not otherwise being met by commercial entities. They typically continue to serve until another agency takes over the charge or the mission is ultimately achieved.

In the case of WSIU Public Broadcasting, we’re founded on the principle that every citizen deserves access to information and educational programming. It’s a mission to which we’re fully committed. As of today, no other agency has stepped in to take our place. But, what about the Internet? The Internet holds the answer to everything and it’s free, right?

To be certain, there are many things one can access online for no charge. Some is useful information, some is not so useful information, and some is downright deceptive. Knowing the difference is essential. Sure there are places where public Internet access appears to be free for at least a period of time (library or public wifi), but generally some ‘one’ or some ‘body’ is paying some ‘thing’ to make that “free” service available. In the case of WSIU, the some ‘body’ paying is you (thank you). Each time you and others like you invest in WSIU, it helps insure that a trusted source will be available to help you better understand

what is true, what is false, what is opinion, and what has been vetted. Your gift means we can continue working with other not-for-profit agencies, as well as to explore their activities, raise awareness for their missions, and strengthen our communities. If you’ve already made a gift this year, please consider making an additional gift during the month of June. Encourage others to make a gift, as well. This is a truly critical time for WSIU and our yearend fund drive.

Regardless of what happens with state funding, we expect to continue our service until either our mission is no longer necessary or some other organization comes along to take up the charge. But don’t worry – we’re not holding our breath waiting for either of those to happen.
