New Season Begins October 15

SAT 6PM SUN 10AM on WSIU Radio

One of the most popular public radio programs will begin a new chapter next month as Grammy-winning musician CHRIS THILE takes over for GARRISON KEILLOR as the new host of A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. Beginning October 15, Thile will host a 30-week season, including live broadcasts from the series’ home at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minn. and other venues across the country, produced shows, and new digital content. Each show will feature well-known and up-and-coming musicians, humor with sketch comedy and spoken word, plus an original ‘Song of the Week’ composed by Thile. Thile is a gifted mandolinist, singer, and songwriter who recorded his first album at age 12 and is best known for his Grammy-winning work with the acoustic bluegrass trio, Nickel Creek, and progressive bluegrass quintet, the Punch Brothers. “I was raised with…A Prairie Home Companion and I love it with all my heart,” said Thile. “The template Garrison created is infinite in its capacity to surprise, delight, and comfort, and is as malleable as it is sturdy. Being able to explore what can be done with it on a weekly basis is as thrilling a prospect as I can possibly imagine.”

Main WSIU and the CARBONDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY are partnering to present free films and discussions on select Saturdays throughout the Fall 2016-Spring 2017 season as part of the COMMUNITY CINEMA series. NOTE: WSIU and the library are also preparing another exciting John Fugelsang INDIE LENS POP-UP film and discussion series. Photo: Jennifer Summer Watch for details on the air, online, and in Previews. Questions about these events should be directed to Beth Spezia, WSIU Educational Outreach Coordinator, at (618) 453-5595 or beth.spezia@wsiu.org. Our first COMMUNITY CINEMA event features DREAM ON, narrated, hosted, and co-written by political comedian JOHN FUGELSANG (shown in photo above). Following the film, local discussion leaders will moderate community dialogue about our current understanding of the American dream and how it can be realized. DREAM ON investigates the state of the American Dream after decades of rising income inequality and declining economic mobility. In an epic road trip, Fugelsang retraces the journey of Alexis de Tocqueville, whose study of our young country in 1831 came to define America as a place where anyone could climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Following in the Frenchman’s footsteps, Fugelsang asks whether the optimistic spirit of the American Dream popularized by Tocqueville is alive and well today.
