October was a busy month for WSIU! We participated in the MT. VERNON FALL FEST parade in downtown Mt. Vernon, Ill. on October 1. Our PBS KIDS LITERACY VAN (courtesy of Child Care Resource & Referral at John A. Logan College) and SUPER WHY! were a big hit with paradegoers. WSIU staff and students distributed PBS KIDS bracelets and vinyl WVSI/WSIU stickers featuring the Mt. Vernon Rams mascot. We also hosted preview screenings of the GREAT PERFORMANCES special HAMILTON’S AMERICA at Cedarhurst in Mt. Vernon and at Carterville and Carbondale High Schools. Over 150 guests enjoyed a prize drawing, a PBS program preview, and the HAMILTON screener. SIU Theater professor THOMAS KIDD offered insights about the Broadway production.

The series begins in 1965, in the wake of Malcolm X’s & assassination and the passage of the Voting Rights Act – a point in time when the story Americans tell themselves about race relations becomes complicated. It moves on to explore the burgeoning Black Power movement and other events through the present day, charting a wave of new opportunities that would lift African Americans to some of the highest positions in the country.

Today, Barack Obama sits in the White House and African Americans wield influence in every domain, from business to academia to the arts.
