WSIU Hosts Annual Classic Vinyl Sale Music lovers of all ages shopped for vintage vinyl, stereo equipment, CDs, DVDs, and more at WSIU’s 10TH CLASSIC VINYL & MEDIA SALE, held in September at SIU’s Photo: Mallory Andre STUDENT CENTER BALLROOMS in partnership with the MORRIS LIBRARY ANNUAL BOOK SALE. We raised just over $5,000 to support WSIU Radio’s programs and services, including the SOUTHERN ILLINOIS RADIO INFORMATION SERVICE (SIRIS) for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. “It was a great experience holding this year’s sale in conjunction with SIU Morris Library’s book sale,” said JEFF WILLIAMS, WSIU Radio General Manager. “Patrons were happy to be able to shop at both events at the same time and location. We also had a high student turnout due to our new location at the Student Center.” Thank you to everyone who assisted with the sale this year, including WSIU staff and students, SIU and community volunteers, and our partners – SIU MORRIS LIBRARY, SIU CREDIT UNION, WRIGHT DO-IT CENTER, DU QUOIN PUBLIC LIBRARY, JEFFERSON COUNTY/MT. FRI, NOV 10 | 7:44AM & 4:44PM WSIU Radio will broadcast a preview feature highlighting the grand opening on Veterans Day of the Welcome Center for MISSOURI’S NATIONAL VETERANS MEMORIAL in Perryville, Mo., the nation’s first permanent, full-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The black granite replica wall is currently under construction on the north side of Perryville. WSIU’s BRAD PALMER will talk with organizers and community leaders about the ambitious project. WSIU hosted a preview of the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick series, THE VIETNAM WAR, to a crowd of 100 people on Thursday, September 7 at the VARSITY THEATER in Carbondale, Ill. Guests enjoyed refreshments provided by CRISTAUDO’S CAFÉ, BAKERY & CATERING prior to the show. The Varsity Theater’s NATHAN COLUMBO and WSIU Executive Director GREG PETROWICH gave introductory and closing remarks. Approximately 60 people attended WSIU’s free screening and discussion of an episode from the NINE NETWORK ST. LOUIS series HOMELAND: IMMIGRATION IN AMERICA on Friday, October 13 at the LIBERTY THEATER in Murphysboro, Ill. The episode screened, entitled “Enforcement,” explores how communities and our nation struggle to enforce inconsistent immigration policies. The full series is available for viewing at EXPOREHOMELAND.ORG. CINDY BUYS, Professor of Law and Director of International Law Programs at the SIU SCHOOL OF LAW, led an in-depth discussion about differences in constitutional and statutory requirements for pathways to citizenship, the status of illegal immigrants who serve in the U.S. military and of DACA populations in the U.S., and other interesting facets of this complex topic, including trade-offs related to the economic value of immigrant workers vs. the cost of deportation.

WSIU participated in the WILLIAMSON COUNTY INNOVATION ZONE COMMUNITY SAFETY AND SERVICE DAY, hosted by WILLIAMSON COUNTY EARLY CHILDHOOD COOPERATIVE, on Friday, October 6. Approximately 500 children ages 3-5 and their family members joined WSIU at the parking lot of Cornerstone Church in Marion where they interacted with PBS KIDS character Super Why, Smokey the Bear, and McGruff the Crime Dog, saw large EMS and transportation vehicles of all kinds and met the people who staff them, and more. SIU Early Childhood Education practicum student SHONDRIA BOOKER distributed new PBS KIDS books and THOMAS AND FRIENDS activity booklets to each child.

WSIU will participate in the Children’s Area during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE in Carterville, Ill. on SAT, NOV 4 from 10AM-3PM.
