Get Ready for Election 2018 UpFront With Greg Petrowich Executive Director, WSIU Public Broadcasting greg.petrowich@wsiu.org Photo: Kevin Penrod

With the election season now behind us, it’s time to get ready for the next election season. Wait, what? Viewers and listeners often tell us these days it feels like we go right from one election season to another. And while free elections are vital to our democracy, it’s hard to imagine this is what the founding fathers had in mind. So how do we reconcile participation in our civic duty with a need for calm voices and reasoned discourse? Well, WSIU is a good place to start. Over the past months, we provided access to all three U.S. Presidential Debates and the Vice Presidential Debate with thoughtful analysis and no campaign commercials.

Frontline delivered The Choice, which traced the paths of the two major party candidates for President and how each advanced to the national election. We co-sponsored and broadcast the live 90-minute debate for the Illinois 12th U.S. Congressional District. We offered profiles on many of the Illinois House and Senate candidates and news stories on statewide amendments and other ballot issues. On election night, we offered news and analysis from both PBS and NPR, and covered national and local races. Did I mention we didn’t broadcast any campaign commercials? While 30-second soundbites assaulted the airwaves elsewhere, WSIU stuck to its mission of informing citizens, providing depth and analysis, and keeping raised voices to a minimum. While the U.S. Post Office overflowed with anti-candidate mailers, WSIU provided access to resources on its website developed to aid citizens in making an informed decision based on what the candidates and policymakers actually said rather than what others said about them.

And did I mention we didn’t broadcast any campaign commercials? Our non-commercial mission differentiates us in the way we approach election coverage and, of course, it differentiates us in how we’re funded. Viewers and listeners like you have made a conscientious decision to support WSIU because you’d rather focus on the content instead of the commercials. As we head into a new year – and soon the next election cycle – please consider renewing your gift or making an additional gift today. And then, continue to rely on WSIU as your source for news, information, entertainment, educational services, and community engagement. Our mission depends on you.
