LOCAL CINEMA STUDENT SHORT FILM SHOWCASE Last month, WSIU and Carbondale Community Arts hosted a local film screening showcasing short films from students in the SIU Department of Cinema and Photography. The screening event served as an opportunity to expand the classroom experience and provide a platform to showcase local student talent. As a local component to the 2018 PBS Online Film Festival, the event highlighted several film works including Scopohobia by Alexandra Vargas, Hitchhiker by Zachary Risher, Violet by Ellen Esling, and I, Too, Dream American by Tomás Cortez. Guests also enjoyed a preview of the headlining film selection Super Predator: Preludes of the Black Fish, written, produced, and directed by SIU student filmmaker Kelechi Agwuncha. Agwuncha’s film gained national recognition this summer as one of 25 films to be featured in the 2018 PBS Online Film Festival. SIU cinema students, faculty, and community members enjoyed an interview with Agwuncha lead by HD Motyl, Associate Professor and Interim Chair of the Departments of Radio, Television, and Digital Media and Cinema and Photography.
