Celtic Connections is Second in the Nation
A
ccording to DAR.fm, a new online digital audio recording service created by Internet entrepreneur Michael Robertson, Celtic Connections, is now the second-highest rated Celtic music program in America, just behind The Thistle & Shamrock. Using millions of hours of actual recording and listening data, DAR.fm tracked more than 15,000 shows based on popularity and ranked them within a variety of genre categories. We’d like to offer our congratulations for an honor well-deserved to Celtic Connections host Bryan Kelso Crow, who has faithfully shared his extensive knowledge of and passion for Celtic music to listeners regionally and around the country for the past 20 years. WSIU Radio is proud to be the producing station for this popular and well-received music series. Learn more about Celtic Connections online at celticconnectionsradio.org.

H
eard any enlightening radio stories about nature on SIRIS recently? If you have, then you’re listening to SIRIS volunteer and WSIU employee, Kevin Boucher. “I read articles about animals, the prehistoric world, the Earth, space, the environment...you name it,” he says. “I love exploring the natural world.” Boucher was born in Newport, Rhode Island, but his family didn’t stay in the picturesque coastal city. A self-described ‘army brat,’ he traveled the country and the world at a young age. Although it was challenging to move so frequently, Boucher saw each move as “a chance to learn something new.”
In the Fall 2007, Boucher enrolled in the Master’s program Professional Media and Media Management Studies in the College of Mass Communication & Media Arts, which he successfully completed in Spring 2011. While in graduate school, he rediscovered his passion for radio and decided to produce a radio documentary as his Master’s thesis. “Even though I make my living working full time in TV,” he says, “I’ve always loved radio.” The end result was entitled Sounds and Stories of the Shawnee Forest. The 15-minute documentary aired on WSIU Radio as part of the Radio Voices series and can be found online at wsiu.org by selecting “WSIU Podcasts” under the Radio tab.
After graduating in May, Boucher says “I suddenly had this huge chunk of spare time on my hands, and I wanted to use it wisely. I knew SIRIS needed volunteer readers and I thought, ‘Well, I like reading In 1976, his family settled in Murphysboro, stuff.’ And the rest is history!” Illinois where Boucher finished high
One of the things Boucher says he enjoys most about SIRIS is “helping somebody by doing something I love.” He adds, “If I can help people go places that they otherwise would be unable to go, then I’ve done my part.” Boucher also says that volunteering for SIRIS not only has encouraged him to read more, “it’s helped me to develop my knowledge of the outdoors and it allows me to share my love for nature with others.” In his spare time, Boucher likes to hike, garden, cook, and spend time with his wife, Loraine Hunziker, an Academic Advisor in the SIUC College of Engineering. Favorite WSIU programs include NPR News and Storycorps segments on WSIU Radio, and WSIU-TV programs such as NOVA, Nature, and Masterpiece. Boucher continues to create new radio features that showcase the natural wonders of our region. He recently completed a Radio Voices segment entitled Owl Encounter (also available by podcast at wsiu.org), and is working on a story about monarch butterfly migration in Southern Illinois.
