And while headlines often focus on the Chicago area, our collaborative reporting team realized the need to expose it’s impact on downstate communities. The series profiled central and southern Illinois and used statistical information and personal stories to explore the impact of gun violence as well as opportunities to end it. Topics examined included school violence and training programs, social inequality, and access to suicide prevention services and mental healthcare. The series is available for streaming online at news.wsiu.org and via the WSIU Mobile App. The Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting is a partner of the Illinois Newsroom, a journalism collaboration comprised of regional public media stations. Funding comes from the stations and grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the McCormick Foundation.
