SIU is pleased to announce the promotion of Lisa MorrisetteZapp from FM Broadcast

Programming Assistant to WSIU FM Operations Manager. Lisa has been at WSIU for 17 years, and was chosen from a large pool of national candidates to lead the operations and production areas for WSIU Radio. You might recognize Lisa as ‘the voice’ of the station, as well as when she’s on-air and coordinating our pledge drives. She also is in charge of promotions, traffic, and supervising and training students interested in learning about broadcasting at SIU Carbondale. Morrisette grew up in southeast central Illinois, near Longview, and has always been a fan of public broadcasting. As a child, she enjoyed the PBS children’s programs Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, The Electric Company,

and The Letter People. Later in high school, chums gave her the nickname ‘Ms. PBS’ because of her family’s dedicated viewing of NOVA, Frontline, Nature, and National Geographic programs. Lisa’s love of music was nurtured not only by her participation in band and chorus, but also by listening to classical music on WILL Public Radio. She says that public broadcasting has always been a significant part of her life. Lisa began her career at WSIU Radio as a volunteer board operator in 1994 when she came to SIUC for her studies, and later became a paid student employee. After obtaining her degree in Radio Television from SIU in 1997, she was hired full time, and has been passionate about the role she plays at WSIU Public Broadcasting ever since. In her time with WSIU she has twice served as the temporary director of SIRIS and has volunteered her efforts for various WSIU-TV and community outreach activities over her many years. Lisa lives between Carbondale and Makanda with her husband, Jon Zapp,. and their two pugs, Fu Ling Lu and Miso Soup. She is very dedicated to the mission of WSIU Public Broadcasting, and looks forward to continuing to serve the WSIU community in her new role as FM Operations Manager.

Those Who Serve series on Morning Edition

T

his Fourth of July, NPR begins a series of three stories, “Those Who Serve,” that explores the divide between the civilian and military worlds. NPR’s Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman profiles several Marines fighting in Afghanistan, who talk candidly about why they serve.

This series airs beginning Monday, July 4, on Morning Edition. Story Descriptions Those Who Serve: The Grunts

Morning Edition; Monday, July 4 Troops now serving in Afghanistan come from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. NPR’s Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman meets two of them in Helmand Province: Lance Corporal Andrew Zemore and Private First Class Dave Kroha. Neither could find their way at home -- bar fights, quitting college, the usual stuff. Then they joined the Marines. Now both men feel they have a mission and a calling: on patrol in Afghanistan. A two-way with Bowman and ME host Steve Inskeep will wrap this first segment.

Those Who Serve: The Sergeant

Morning Edition; Tuesday, July 5 NPR’s Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman goes on patrol with Sergeant Jon Moulder as he leads his Marines through Helmand Province in Afghanistan. A Nashville, TN native, Moulder is on his fourth combat tour, having served twice in Iraq and twice in Afghanistan, and has lost several friends to the wars. His biggest fear, after witnessing the ugliness of war: losing his respect for humanity.

Those Who Serve: The Medic

Morning Edition; Wednesday, July 6 NPR’s Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman talks with Darryl St. George about his decision to become a Navy Corpsman, a medic for the Marine Corps. The 29-year-old Long Island native is a former high school history teacher whose fellow teachers warned against his enlisting. But he felt compelled to serve his country -- and so he joined.

“[WSIU] covers such interesting stories.” - Jack Parker, Carbondale, IL

I moved here in 1977, and I’ve been listening to WSIU Radio every day ever since. I listen to NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered during the week, and to Weekend Edition on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Oh, they cover everything! They cover such interesting stories… the kind of stories you usually can find only in a top newspaper. In the last few years, I’ve noticed more local reporting, which I find really interesting and appreciate. I actually listen when you interview the SIU President, and that’s kind of fun! I’m Jack Parker from Carbondale, IL and WSIU Public Radio is Powered by Me!
