WSIU Welcomes New Staff Member in Corporate Support

W

SIU is pleased to welcome Ellen Carlson as our Assistant Director of Corporate Support. Carlson joins Renée Ferrell Dillard, WSIU’s Director of Corporate Support, in reaching out to businesses across a five-state region to encourage support of WSIU’s programs, services, and activities.

A Busy Year Ahead

I

t’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner when, for many, it doesn’t feel like winter ever happened. Nonetheless, a quarter of the new year is nearly behind us and at WSIU there is still plenty to do in the months ahead. Following is a short list of what’s happening at your local public media stations. We’re spending some time in the first part of the year conducting assessments of our programming and the communities in our service area as we develop a strategic plan to begin our second half-century. In addition to commercially available data, we’re conducting listening sessions in several locations to hear what our audience has to say about WSIU and how we’re meeting the needs of both our viewers and listeners. We’ve already conducted two community conversations in Effingham and Mt. Vernon. If you receive an invitation in the coming months, we hope you’ll join us for a conversation about how WSIU is meeting your needs. WSIU is moving forward with several equipment projects, including the installation of digital television production facilities with the help of a USDA Rural Utilities Services grant. We’re also installing back up electrical power generation at two of our remote sites (Olney and Tamaroa), plus the studios in Carbondale, thanks to an award under the WARN Act (Warning Alert and Response Network). With a general election this year, we’ll also have both primary coverage in March, as well as the most thoughtful, in-depth exploration of the candidates and issues in the fall (without screaming and without an agenda). Of course, you expect nothing less because you’re a regular listener and viewer of WSIU. Our coverage of government and politics is one of the many reasons why you watch and support the WSIU stations. Along with these major initiatives, we’ll continue to deliver a schedule of programs that only WSIU can, filled with commercialfree information, education, and entertainment. Some of these programs include PBS NewsHour and Washington Week, regular series such as Masterpiece and American Experience, family favorites like Martha Speaks and our newest kids’ series, Signing Time, local programs like WSIU InFocus and our new arts series, Expressions, student productions such as River Region Evening Edition, alt.news 26:46, Studio A, Scholastic Hi-Q, and many more. WSIU relies on the generosity of thousands like you, and we’re grateful for your continued support. If you ever have questions or thoughts about our programming or any of these initiatives, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at (618) 453-6181.

Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. Continuing on the quest begun in his previous projects African American Lives (2006), African American Lives 2 (2008) and Faces of America (2010), Gates finds new ways, as he says, “(to) get into the DNA of American culture.” In each episode, he takes viewers along for the journey with one celebrity pair bound together by an intimate, sometimes hidden link, treks through layers of ancestral history, uncovers secrets and surprises of their family trees, and shares lifealtering discoveries.

T

he basic drive to discover who we are and where we come from is at the core of the new PBS series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This is the 12th series from Dr. Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research.

Working closely with ancestry experts and leading U.S. genealogists, including staff from the New England Genealogical Historical Society and Johni Cerny, co-author of the acclaimed The Source: Guidebook for American Genealogy, Gates and his team comb through family stories to discover unknown histories and relatives the guests never knew existed. Pilot Study Shows Teachers Benefit from Digital Resources ecent findings from a national survey of teachers in grades preschool through high school has shed light on the rising role of technology in America’s classrooms, as well as the barriers teachers face to accessing the “right” digital resources.

In a report commissioned by the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council to be released later this spring, Dr. Evangeline Pianfetti of the University of Illinois and other evaluators learned that local teachers use digital resources to strengthen connections with students. According to the pilot study of the
