Love is on the Air

Education for Every Generation

I

t has been said that education is the great equalizer. And while the availability of resources may vary state to state, the access barrier to receiving educational programming from PBS and WSIU is virtually non-existent, in order that everybody may benefit. All it takes is a television and an antenna.

Most frequently PBS and WSIU receive accolades for unparalleled children’s programming. We’re all familiar with Sesame Street, Curious George, and The Electric Company. But learning doesn’t stop at the end of our formal schooling – and learning on PBS doesn’t stop when we outgrow the Cookie Monster. Just flip through this month’s Previews program guide, and you’ll see hours of educational programming for audiences 18 and older.

This January and February, NOVA looks at Earthquakes in Japan, Volcanoes in Iceland, the Neanderthal Genome, and Earth from Space. American Experience profiles Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, and John D. Rockefeller, and takes an in-depth look at the Abolitionists who led the most important civil rights crusade in American history.

In between, you’ll hear interviews with some of today’s most interesting authors, political figures, and newsmakers on Charlie Rose. You’ll learn what’s going on from both sides of the pond on the PBS NewsHour and BBC World News. Globe Trekker will explore well-known and lesser-known places in our world, America’s Heartland checks in with the land most directly around us here in this region, and Frontline explores the first four years of the Obama Presidency.

And none of these examples include our multicast channels of WSIU WORLD and WSIU Create (see listings on pages 8-9). Both are filled with additional educational opportunities in history, biography, science, documentaries, how-to’s and so much more.

Educational television programming doesn’t cease to be relevant when we enter the classroom as youth; and it takes on a whole new level of importance no matter how old we are when we close out our formal education. elcome back for a third season, Downton Abbey! The returning cast of the award-winning Masterpiece mini-series includes Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, and a host of others, joined by Shirley MacLaine who plays Martha Levinson, the American mother of Lady Cora, Countess of Grantham (McGovern).

EPISODE 1 (January 6)

Wedding guests descend on Downton Abbey, where disasters threaten. One is Cora’s freewheeling American mother, who tries to loosen up her in-laws.

EPISODE 2 (January 13)

The fate of Downton Abbey hinges on a letter from a dead man. Edith and Sir Anthony face their own fateful moment.

Mrs. Hughes confronts a crisis.

EPISODE 3 (January 20)

Two social revolutions arrive at Downton Abbey: the Irish civil war and the fight for women’s suffrage. A mysterious conspiracy keeps Anna and Bates apart.

EPISODE 4 (January 27)

The Crawley family faces its severest test yet. Meanwhile, new faces try to fit into the tight-knit circle of servants. New evidence turns up in a baffling case.

SIU’s outreach team of Beth Spezia and Vickie Devenport have been on the road this fall giving presentations to educators throughout the region about the Illinois Edition of PBS LearningMedia. This customized online resource provides teachers with thousands of high-quality public media digital assets, which they can incorporate in their classroom instruction using Smartboards, i-Pads, and other technologies.

Things go badly amiss at Downton Abbey.

Robert and Cora are not speaking. The servants are shunning Matthew’s mother, Isobel. And Matthew and Robert have fallen out. Bates takes a gamble.

EPISODE 6 (February 10)

Change arrives in a big way for several key characters at Downton Abbey. A yearly cricket match with the village sees old scores settled and new plots hatched.

EPISODE 7 (February 17)

The Crawleys head to a Scottish hunting lodge, while the downstairs staff stays behind at Downton Abbey. New romances flare up, and a crisis unfolds.

Dr. Robert Daiber, Superintendent of the Regional Office of Education (ROE) #41 in Madison County invited WSIU to give a presentation about Illinois PBS LearningMedia at a meeting of the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools (IARSS) in Springfield. Over 50 superintendents from throughout the state attended to learn about PBS LearningMedia and share details with educators in their home school districts.

As a follow up to the IARSS meeting, WSIU was invited to give additional presentations to the superintendents and principals of Jackson and Perry Counties ROE #30 and Edwardsville ROE #41.

WSIU Hosts Film Screening of Solar Mamas

A

udiences for the Community Cinema film series continue to express their enjoyment and interest in the monthly film screenings and discussions co-hosted by WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library.

“Guests tell us they enjoy the opportunity to participate in the screenings every month and to talk with area experts about the topics and themes addressed in the films,” said Vickie Devenport, WSIU outreach coordinator.

The November film featured was Solar Mamas, which tells the story of India’s Barefoot College. Here, impoverished rural women are taught how to bring solar energy back to their villages.

Dr. Lizette Chevalier, Associate Dean of the SIUC College of Engineering, and Melinda Yeomans, Coordinator for SIUC Women’s Professional Advancement, led a discussion with the audience after the film.

Film screenings are held at the library on the last Saturday of each month at 2:30pm.

WSIU Documents Children’s Conference Using Social Media

W

SIU joined the Southern Illinois Coalition for Children and Families, Child Care Resource & Referral, and Illinois Action for Children to help organize “Healthy Children – Brighter Futures,” the 1st Annual Southern Illinois Children’s Health Conference, held in November at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill. WSIU and SIU students organized a successful social media campaign that resulted in a virtual conference to share with the general public. SIU students documented and shared the conference using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. WSIU On the Road Jan 8 | WSIU Mobile Learning Lab Installation WSIU staff will help to install a WSIU Mobile Learning Lab at the Child Development Lab in Quigley Hall on the SIU Carbondale campus. The Mobile Learning Lab combines PBS KIDS assets and transmedia resources such as iPads, Kindles, mobile apps, and social media to fully immerse students in the learning experience.

Jan 16 | PBS KIDS Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood WSIU will present the PBS KIDS series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood to families of children ages 2-4 at the Archway Child Care Center in Carbondale.

Feb 4 | Family Math Night Families will build math skills using WSIU’s Mobile Learning Lab featuring PBS KIDS games on computers, tablets, iPods, and mobile phones at the Boys & Girls Club of Carbondale.

Feb 7 | GMRC Presentation WSIU outreach coordinator Beth Spezia will present children’s media projects, including mobile and interactive games, as part of the Global Media Research Center speaker series at SIU Carbondale’s College of Mass Communication & Media Arts.

WSIU MOBILE LEArning lab news O n November 30, WSIU hosted an orientation session at the New Media Center in the SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts to provide the WSIU Mobile Learning Lab project team with their equipment, including new iPads and Kindle Fire tablets, rugs, and banners.

Tina Carpenter of the Boys & Girls Club of Carbondale joined representatives of the SIUC College of Education and Human Services at the training. These sites will implement PBS KIDS games in their labs.

Feb 15 | Giant City Stories WSIU will celebrate Clifford the Big Red Dog’s birthday at Giant City School in Carbondale with a PBS KIDS Raising Readers Theater performance. Students also will perform their own work in the school’s Poetry Café.

Feb 21 | Illinois PBS LearningMedia WSIU and members of the Illinois Education Cooperative will host a free webinar to introduce Illinois teachers to Illinois PBS LearningMedia. The webinar is one of a series to be held in 2013 as a result of WSIU’s first Illinois PBS LearningMedia webinar on November 8 in which over 150 teachers statewide participated.

Former Governor James R. Thompson Visits WSIU-TV, SIU Carbondale

ormer Illinois Governor James R. Thompson shared insight and often funny tales about Illinois politics over the past 50 years during a visit to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus last October. Gov. Thompson’s visit marked the conclusion of WSIU Public Television’s 50th anniversary year, which wrapped up in November, and the 15th anniversary of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.

In a one-on-one interview for WSIU InFocus with senior TV producer Jak Tichenor, Thompson talked about the state’s recent public corruption scandals, worsening fiscal situation, public employee pension crisis, and the need for bipartisan leadership in the Illinois Statehouse.

The Chicago Republican served as the state’s chief executive from 1977 to 1991 and was widely respected for his ability to work with Democrats and Republicans alike in forging consensus on tough

issues like the state budget, taxation, and growing jobs during his record-breaking tenure as the longest-serving Governor in the state’s history.

During the WSIU InFocus interview, Thompson discusses the need for Illinois to broaden its tax base by considering a tax on services as a way to bring muchneeded revenue into the state’s coffers.

Despite the fact that the state’s last two former Governors had been sent to federal prison on corruption charges, Thompson believes the vast majority of public officials in the state are honest and get a bad rap from the few who can’t follow the law.

WSIU-TV also taped former Gov. Thompson’s public address, “Perspectives on Illinois Government: Past, Present and Future,” which was delivered to a large audience at the SIU Student Center on October 25 as part of the Lecture Series of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at SIU Carbondale.

SIU staff and students, along with PBS KIDS character SuperWHY and students from the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Student Registered Organization Educ8kd , marched in the annual SIU Homecoming Parade on October 13 in Carbondale (photo above).

Children enjoyed hugs and photo opportunities with SuperWHY, who was accompanied by WSIU outreach student Lindsay DuBois (below). WSIU and Educ8kdz handed out free PBS KIDS children’s books along the parade route (bottom photo). Children also had fun identifying the PBS KIDS characters on WSIU’s Literacy Van, presented in partnership with John A. Logan Childcare Resource & Referral.
