What’s Old is New Again: A TV Antenna

R

emember when everybody watched television via off-air antenna? Wrapping the rabbit ears in aluminum foil? Tweaking the antenna rotor? If you listen, you can still hear the conflicting yet specific directions; “a little to the left…no, a little to the right…perfect, now don’t move!” Some of us still watch TV via off-air antenna, while others now enjoy WSIU/WUSI via cable or home satellite. With so many choices for how to watch WSIU, it may be helpful to address some of the issues surrounding cable, satellite and off-air delivery of our program services. In the world of cable television, a few local providers offer all of WSIU’s digital multi-cast channels (WSIU-HD, WSIU-World and WSIU-Create); however, others offer only our HD channel. And while WSIU now broadcasts its primary channel exclusively in digital high definition and often in wide screen, some cable and satellite companies down-convert our HD channel into standard definition (SD) and cut off the sides of the picture. Many cable providers are required to carry WSIU and our multicast channels, but enforcing this rule is not always easy. When it comes to home satellite, DirecTV offers local commercial stations in HD, but delivers WSIU in SD even though we’ve been delivering a high definition signal for quite some time. Currently, Dish Network doesn’t offer any local stations in high definition for the areas served by WSIU/ WUSI. Both home satellite companies may add HD service for WSIU at some point, but the timeline has yet to be announced. Neither currently offers our digital multi-cast channels (WSIU-World and WSIU-Create), but who knows what the future holds? Calling your provider may result in adding one or both of our extra channels. Regardless of which multi-channel provider you may have, here are some key points to remember with regard to WSIU/WUSI programming. 1) WSIU broadcasts 100% in digital as required by law. 2) Our primary channel (WSIU HD) is always transmitted in 720p high definition with most programs in wide screen, although some older programs are upconverted to this format. 3) WSIU offers two additional channels of programming 24 hours each day (WSIU-World and WSIU-Create). 4) Regardless of which subscription provider you may have, you can always watch WSIU HD, WSIU-World and WSIU-Create over the air with an antenna, receiving the best picture quality in high definition and wide screen whenever available. We’re always happy to assist our viewers with tips on hooking up an offair antenna in order to receive our HD and multi-cast digital broadcasts. If you haven’t done so recently, it’s somewhat nostalgic to watch TV with an antenna again and the picture is often more robust than with cable or satellite. Some home satellite boxes provide antenna inputs so you can see upcoming off-air WSIU programs in the on-screen guide. And some further allow you to record WSIU programs seamlessly on a hard drive along side the other satellite channels. If you’d like to see more of WSIU’s three digital channels on your cable or satellite system you can always give them a call and ask. After all, we’re powered by you.

WSIU Participates in National Project to Preserve Historical Broadcast Content

W

SIU Public Broadcasting recently concluded its participation in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s (CPB) American Archive Pilot Project, a grant-funded national archive effort administered by Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) to locate and preserve the public media record of pivotal events in U.S. history. OPB has completed the prototype archive project, which will establish a foundation for archiving public broadcasting material in the future. CPB commissioned the project in January of 2009 to explore the scope of historic video and audio located on shelves at stations across the public broadcasting system and to determine what it would take to preserve and archive this historic content. Twenty-five public broadcasting stations took part in the first phase of the project, during which they conducted inventories for content related to the U.S. Civil Rights movement and World War II era oral histories created in conjunction with the Ken Burns series The War. WSIU was among 22 stations selected to participate in the project’s second phase, which included restoring, digitizing, and cataloging sound and video clips. Stations archived more than 5,700 items totaling more than 2,300 hours of broadcast material. Among the materials WSIU uncovered are local programs documenting racial strife in Cairo, Illinois in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, a 1978 speech at SIUC by civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael; conversations with African American Vietnam War veterans; a 1990 trip to St. Louis to record interviews with the survivors of the USS Aaron Ward, a destroyer-minelayer that was nearly sunk in a battle near Okinawa in 1945; and a 1997 interview with poet Gwendolyn Brooks. “The American Archive Pilot Program saved hours upon hours of extraordinary content,” says OPB’s project manager, Catherine Stimac. “It was (OPB’s) great pleasure to collaborate with CPB, partner organizations, and stations from around the country on this initiative. The American Archive comes at a crucial moment, one in which we realize that public broadcasting’s significant contributions to the chronicle of our country’s history are at risk of being lost.” Presently, the archive prototype serves for demonstration purposes only. Rights clearances prevent WSIU from making the material available to the public at this time.

housands of bats, three home run records, and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America’s national pastime with his landmark 1994 PBS series Baseball.

Filmmaker Ken Burns. Photo: Al Karevy Photography.

Now, Burns and co-director Lynn Novick update the series with The Tenth Inning, coming to WSIU TV and PBS stations across the country this September. Three episodes of the Baseball series will serve as the “lead batter” prior to The Tenth Inning’s fall debut. Beginning with a crippling strike that alienated millions of fans and brought the game to the brink, The Tenth Inning tells the tumultuous story of America’s national pastime from the early 1990s to the present day, introducing an unforgettable array of players, teams and fans, celebrating the game’s resilience and enduring appeal, and showcasing both extraordinary accomplishments – and devastating losses and disappointments. The program celebrates baseball’s new Golden Age – an era of unprecedented home run totals, popularity, and

prosperity – and sheds light on one of the game’s darkest chapters: the steroid era. Content in the two-part film includes the compelling stories of Joe Torre, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki, Cal Ripken Jr., and Barry Bonds, as well as insightful commentary from an eclectic lineup of writers, broadcasters, fans, and all-stars. n a world that offers a dizzying array of amusements and entertainments, there is none quite so enduring or universal as the circus. This fall, PBS stations nationwide will hit the road with Circus, a new six-hour series from the filmmakers behind the Emmy Award-winning Carrier. The two-part program documents the everyday life of the legendary Big Apple Circus. In this PBS preview, producers Maro Chermayeff and Jeff Dupre recount their journey into what circus folk call the “backyard” where they mingled with crew members, acrobats, clowns, and other amazing characters under the tent. From the big top to the “back lot,” Circus will explore a distinctive world with its own rules and lingo, and no fixed address. Get involved with the diverse characters who make up the Big Apple family. Share their fears and frustrations, triumphs, and failures and find out what it really means to live life in the ring. This is the second year Giant City kindergarten students and third graders have worked together to increase vocabulary skills, while implementing team-building and leadership roles. During the eight-week-long program, older students (big buddies) and kindergartners (little buddies) learn new words, play games, watch episodes of the PBS KIDS series, Martha Speaks, and read together. Casey Parker of the Humane Society of Southern Illinois demonstrated the proper care of pets, while children donated pet care products to help the shelter care for animals. Kids also received certificates of achievement, books, and related materials.

WSIU Reception Troubleshooting Guide | Closed Captioning STEP #1 -- ANTENNAS

INDOOR ANTENNA

You must have a VHF or dual VHF/UHF antenna to receive WSIUTV’s channels. See below for more details.

• Extend the “rabbit ears” • Rotate the antenna a quarter turn and rescan again if you are unsuccessful finding WSIU -TV8 / WUSI - TV16 the first time. Repeat this process again if needed. • Be aware that aluminum siding may affect indoor antenna VHF reception.

STEP #2 -- CHANNEL SCAN Rescan your converter box or digital TV according to its manual. If rescanning does not work, try Step #3.

STEP #3 -- RESET Unplug the digital TV or converter box for a few minutes, plug it back in, and, then, do a channel scan again (step # 2). You may have to do this several times before it works. Finally, if the above fails, you may be able to force a system reset by starting a channel scan and unplugging the TV or converter box while it is scanning. Wait five minutes, plug it back in, and then rescan for channels (step#2).

OUTDOOR ANTENNA • Point antenna at our transmitter located in Tamaroa (WSIU-TV 8) or Dundas (WUSI-TV 16). • Old cables/coax may result in poor signal quality. (RG6 cable is recommended.)

ver 75 area children, many dressed in pink tutus, and their families enjoyed an enchanting visit with PBS KIDS character, Angelina Ballerina™, who danced her way across the lobby of Marion Cultural & Civic Center on Saturday, June 12 as part of a special cultural event for children presented by the Friends of WSIU advisory board.

Kids had fun making mouse masks at WSIU’s activity tables and posing with Angelina Ballerina. Photo: Susie Phillips.

Angelina made two appearances and posed for photos prior to the 2pm ballet performance of Romeo & Juliet, a part of the Southern Illinois Music Festival.

Just before Angelina’s grand entrance, members of the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra invited the audience to participate in a demonstration of the different types of instruments used by an orchestra and then played select pieces of music that brought smiles to the faces of the children, who laughed and clapped along. In between Angelina visits, children watched Angelina Ballerina videos and played games on the Angelina Ballerina web pages at pbskids.org, created mouse masks and flipbooks, and enjoyed a variety of print activity sheets. A big “thank you” goes to Ed Benyas of the SIUC School of Music who graciously worked with WSIU to secure the space and resources of the Marion Cultural & Civic Center. We’d also like to thank Friends of WSIU board members Gayle Klam, Candis Isberner, and Scott McClatchey who supervised the children’s activity tables, with assistance from WSIU student employees Katrina Stackhouse, Mallory Henkleman, and Hannah Rummel and WSIU promotions coordinator Monica Tichenor. Friends Board member Susie Philips served as photographer. WSIU’s children’s education outreach coordinator Beth Spezia was the event director and emcee for the day’s activities. Friends Board member Lane Hudgins helped to plan the event and to secure a grant to bring Angelina to Southern Illinois.

rimetime programming on WSIU Public Television, including such favorites as Nightly Business Report and American Experience, is underwritten in part by Barbara Blacklock, Managing Director - Investments, Blacklock Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors in Carbondale. Wells Fargo Advisors is a registered broker-dealer and separate non-bank affiliate of Wells Fargo & Company, providing financial advisory, brokerage, asset management, and other financial services (member, SIPC). According to Barbara, she and her team provide investment services, asset management tools, and comprehensive financial advice using a holistic approach toward various stages of life. “I’m proud to be with Wells Fargo Advisors because of its history and reputation as an American institution,” says Barbara. A longtime supporter of WSIU and public broadcasting, Barbara also underwrites WSIU Public Radio. “I began underwriting WSIU-TV

because I think WSIU viewers share common interests in terms of education, intelligence, and sophistication, and understand the scope of financial issues,” she says. Barbara personally counts the PBS NewsHour and the Nightly Business Report among her favorite programs. “It’s important to support public television,” says Barbara. “It is such a highly credible, quality service…it cuts through the fluff and is always educational. You can be entertained and learn something worthwhile at the same time.” Barbara recommends WSIU program underwriting because “…the dollars invested in WSIU bring you value. You can see the outcome. It creates something real – programs that people care about.” “It has benefited my business through the community recognition and positive association with WSIU’s quality. It’s about shared values in terms of trust, ethics, and service.

UNDERWRITER PROFILE Child & Family Connections intervention can make a big difference in child development, or that these services for infants and toddlers are even available. When parents have questions about things like feeding or developmental milestones, they don’t realize where they can go for answers. Often, physicians aren’t even aware of our services.”

C

hild & Family Connections of Carbondale is a nonprofit agency serving Perry, Jackson, Union, Alexander, Pulaski, Johnson, Massac, Pope, and Hardin counties. Parents or professionals can call Child & Family Connections with any type of question or concern about the development of infants and toddlers. The agency will gladly answer parents’ questions and help determine if a free, in-home developmental evaluation is appropriate. As needed, the agency then can arrange for a wide variety of in-home therapies. Brandi Williamson, Executive Director, notes that, “Most people aren’t aware that early

Williamson goes on to say, “We decided to help underwrite WSIU TV’s educational, children’s programming because WSIU connects us to our target population. WSIU Public Television reaches so many families, young parents and children. When our therapists are out working, they see WSIU kids programs playing on the home TV sets.” “A favorite aspect is that WSIU is commercial free, so when children are watching they aren’t being bombarded with advertisements. One of the values that I think our agency shares with WSIU is a strong commitment to family, and to building stronger families.”

Reflecting on community reaction to their sponsorship, Williamson says, “Even though we have been underwriting for only a short time, our announcements are definitely being noticed, and in a very positive way. We’re getting the word out to families that help is available.” Williamson reports that she would recommend WSIU sponsorship to other businesses. “I felt that WSIU was very good at capturing what we do and portraying that. WSIU made the whole process easy. It was efficient and effective, and I’ve been impressed.” Brandi also is a WSIU TV fan personally. “At home our family watches Antiques Roadshow and Austin City Limits…NOVA and Frontline also are favorites, and my husband appreciates the war documentaries.” For more information, contact Child & Family Connections toll free at 888-340-6702 or visit them online at www.cfcconnection.org.
