with Greg Petrowich WSIU A.D. (After Downton)

B

y now many of our viewers are finally getting the “Post Downton Blues.” Season three is complete and with season four months away, you may think there’s nothing quite as interesting to watch on WSIU…think again. Before you put away that remote control, take a look through the pages of this issue of Previews and see what we have in store this spring. Then close your eyes and imagine a different kind of series that might merge a cast of characters that include a former Governor, five high school students, and a ground-breaking comedian. On March 19, beginning at 7pm, look for two special broadcasts from our 50th Anniversary Celebration with former Illinois Governor Jim Thompson. At 7pm, we’ll have a broadcast of Thompson’s live presentation in the SIU Student Center when WSIU’s Jak Tichenor and David Yepsen of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute sat down with Thompson to discuss 50 years of Illinois politics. Then at 8pm, WSIU InFocus continues the conversation with Thompson in our studio. Over two nights beginning March 25, viewers can spend 180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School. At a time when our state and our nation are grappling with difficult decisions surrounding the funding of education, we go inside a Washington, DC public high school and follow the lives of five students over the course of an entire academic year. On April 9, American Masters will feature Carol Burnett: A Woman of Character. Burnett hit her peak during the time of a civil rights struggle and a war in Vietnam. Along with her 11-year run on The Carol Burnett Show, we’ll take a look into her difficult childhood and see how her career began. And of course, if you just didn’t get enough Downton, want to review season three, or missed it entirely and need to catch up, we’ll have two Downton Abbey Marathons where you can watch/ record all of season three (episodes 1-4 at 7pm on March 17 and episodes 5-7 at 6pm on March 24). Truly, the most interesting and diverse television on television is on WSIU. Thanks for watching and for contributing.

WSIU Welcomes New Television Production Staff Member Article by Christina Clayton, WSIU Promotions Graduate Assistant

W

SIU is pleased to welcome Abby Hargrave as the newest addition to WSIU Public Broadcasting. Hargrave, who joined WSIU as as a TV Production Specialist in January, previously worked at TCT, a Christian television station in Marion, Ill., for 9 1/2 years. Now in Carbondale, she’s looking forward to working with students and staff while honing her production skills.

TV Production Specialist Abby Hargrave in the Studio A Control Room. Photo: Robby Ballard.

Hargrave grew up in Murphysboro, Ill. and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts from Freed-Hardeman University in Jackson, Tennessee. She won a piano scholarship to the school, but had a change of heart and opted for a major in media. “I didn’t want to perform or teach full-time,” says Hargrave. “I’ve always liked television and film, so I decided to pursue television as a career.” After graduation, Hargrave moved back to Southern Illinois and began working as a director at TCT where she dabbled in a little bit of everything. “I directed both live and taped programs,” she says. “I also edited programs and spots, did the makeup for programs, and was the chip operator on occasion.” Hargrave’s primary role in her new position at WSIU is to supervise student television productions, including the River Region Evening Edition, Saluki SportsView, Studio A Presents, and Scholastic Hi-Q. She also edits and directs, and fulfills other roles to keep WSIUTV’s production unit running smoothly. In a typical day, Hargrave prepares the station’s two TV studios for classes and productions, assembles crew lists, and supervises student workers as they complete their tasks. She also edits promotional spots and will assist with other field and studio productions. Hargrave is happy to continue her career at WSIU and hopes to incorporate the skills she’s gained in previous positions into her new role. When Hargrave is away from the office, she enjoys creating art. She likes to make charcoal drawings and hopes to try painting soon. She’s an avid reader and delights in reading short stories and essays by David Sedaris. Hargrave is also a huge fan of author Chuck Palahniuk. Her favorite book of all time is Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Hargrave can be reached at (618) 453-5888 or via email at abby.hargrave@wsiu.org.

Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge Sundays 8pm • March 31- May 19

J

eremy Piven stars as the upstart American who taught the English how to shop in Mr. Selfridge, a sumptuous new series created by Emmy® Awardwinning writer Andrew Davies for Masterpiece Classic. Mr. Selfridge marks the first television role for Piven since his portrayal of movie agent Ari Gold in the hit series Entourage. Now, Piven tackles another power player in the world of glitz: Harry Gordon Selfridge, father of the renowned London department store that bears his name and which opened to astonishment and some disdain in 1909. Fancy window displays, cosmetic counters, merchandise you can touch, and other marketing breakthroughs had to start somewhere, and they sprang from the genius of Chicago native Selfridge. He combined guile, taste, boldness, the poise of a swindler, and the seductive charm of a Casanova – qualities that spelled success, but also trouble. The cast includes Zoe Tapper as Ellen Love, showgirl, temptress, and the sexy

“face of Selfridge’s”; Frances O’Connor as Rose, Harry’s loyal but independent wife; Grégory Fitoussi as the mercurial Henri LeClair, window designer extraordinaire; and Aisling Loftus as spunky shop girl Agnes Towler, who gets the lucky break of her life thanks to a chance encounter with Harry.

Jeremy Piven as Harry Selfridge. Photo: ITV for Masterpiece.

Also appearing are Katherine Kelly as socialite and siren Lady Mae; Ron Cook as Mr. Crabb, Harry’s pathologically nervous chief accountant; Amanda Abbington as Miss Mardle, the lovelorn head of accessories; and Samuel West as newspaper editor Frank Edwards, Harry’s go-between in courting English money and mistresses. Mr. Selfridge opens with the newly arrived Harry, fresh from success at Marshall Field’s in Chicago, checking the retail climate in London. Marshall Field pioneered the slogan, “The customer is always right.” But Harry finds that a demanding customer in England is likely to get thrown out of the store. Customers

are expected to know what they want and, when presented with it, to make their purchase and leave. Furthermore, English ladies get their dresses from dressmakers who make house calls, and beauty products are a hush-hush subject, associated with actresses and prostitutes. But all of that is about to change. Channeling the consumer culture of the future, Harry invents a shopping experience that is a cross between theater and fantasy fulfillment. Whatever the latest sensation, Harry hitches his star to it. Truly, in his personal life, as in his business, he is addicted to the sensational – which creates exciting complications for all involved.

coming UP...

he Carbondale Public Library and WSIU saw a packed house for the first Community Cinema film screening of 2013, which was held on January 26 and featured the film Soul Food Junkies. Produced by Byron Hurt, the film explores the cultural significance of soul food and its impact on the health of African American communities. Angie Bailey, Director of Health Education for the Jackson County Health Department, and Jo Sanders, the Ministry Coordinator for Southern Illinois Healthcare, led a discussion after the film. Joining them were ambassadors from Project Power, a program developed by the American Diabetes Association for predominantly African American church congregations.

“Soul Food Junkies was a wonderful film that really spoke to the heart of the African American culture on how the food that we eat can be cooked a different way so that we can eat healthier,” said Shezetta Porter of the Jackson County Health Department, who attended the event. “I really learned a lot about how to purchase home grown foods for my family. I would love to see this film shown in schools for parents and children to see. Educating the population about eating healthier is the best way to

“The Governor has no choice but to paint the starkest picture possible for members of the General Assembly of – unless they act quickly to fix the worst funded public employee pension system in the country,” says Jak Tichenor, Illinois Lawmakers host and Statehouse correspondent. The Governor’s own Office of Management and Budget estimates that state revenues for fiscal year 2014 will grow by approximately $600-million, but that growth will be quickly offset by increased pension costs of $945-million. The state’s unfunded pension liability now totals over $100-billion, and grows another $17-million per day. “It’s an incredibly tough situation,” says Tichenor. “Every solution that’s been put on the table so far faces almost certain legal challenges and voter backlash from affected groups like retired teachers and union workers.” Illinois Lawmakers’ live coverage will feature analysis from veteran Statehouse reporters Rich Miller of Capitolfax.com and Amanda Vinicky of Illinois Public Radio, as well as in-depth reaction from House and Senate legislative leaders.

“Any one of these issues is enough to tie lawmakers in knots in a typical springtime at the Capitol,” said program host Jak Tichenor, who has served as Statehouse Correspondent for the series since 1991. “But having
