JAMESTOWN COMING EXCLUSIVELY TO PBS MASTERPIECE AMAZON CHANNEL AND PBS PASSPORT Written by Bill Gallagher (Lark Rise to Candleford, The Paradise) and from the producers of Downton Abbey, this new dramatic series follows the lives of three courageous, dynamic women who decide to leave their dark pasts behind in England, and make the journey of a lifetime across the ocean for a new life in 17th Century America. Taking viewers back to 1619 Jamestown, Virginia, Alice, Verity, and Jocelyn are among the first women to arrive in the English colony. Duty bound to marry the three men who have paid for their passage to the New World, they have little idea of what the future holds or the disruption their arrival is about to bring. Twisting storylines follow the new arrivals as they make an immediate impact and are thrust into a new world of love, desire, power, and survival. While love triangles, bitter rivalries, and fierce competition cause conflict for the residents, ultimately they are bound together by their resolute will to survive and thrive in their new lives. A new episode of the series will be available each Friday on PBS MASTERPIECE Amazon channel by subscription and the entire first season (8 total episodes) is now available for streaming in PASSPORT.

ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS RETURNS FRIDAYS AT 7:30PM • MAY 4 – JUNE 1

PA R T O N E • S U N , M AY 1 3 AT 7 P M

PA R T T W O • S U N , M AY 2 0 AT 7 P M Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy - there are few more iconic names in American literature. They are the March sisters, created by Louisa May Alcott in her timeless novel Little Women. Now brought to life in a new two-part miniseries, families will enjoy this coming-of-age story that is as elegant and engaging today as it was on its original publication in 1868. Set against the backdrop of a country divided, the story follows the four March sisters: Jo (Maya Hawke), Meg (Willa Fitzgerald), Beth (Annes Elwy), and Amy (Kathryn Newton) on their journey from childhood to adulthood. Under the guidance of their mother Marmee (Emily Watson), the girls navigate what it means to be a young woman: from gender roles to sibling rivalry, first love, loss, and marriage. Accompanied by the charming boy next door Laurie Laurence (Jonah Hauer-King), their cantankerous wealthy Aunt March (Angela Lansbury), and benevolent neighbor Mr. Laurence (Michael Gambon), each sister follows her own path to make her mark on the world. PART ONE With their father away at war, the March sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy come to terms with their new life alongside their mother, Marmee. The girls also make friends with Laurie, the new boy next door.

PART TWO The March family fears the worst when Mr. March falls ill and Marmee must travel to Washington to care for him. Amy gets the chance to travel to Europe, Jo moves to New York to pursue her writing, and Beth’s faces a health scare.

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF THE SOLAR ECLIPSE This month, WSIU is pleased to bring our audiences a special documentary film, In the Shadow, which captures the magic of one of nature’s most striking events: a solar eclipse. Filmed by Mark Stoffel and Howard D. Motyl of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at SIU, the film, In the Shadow, captures the behind-the-scenes story and planning process leading up to the 2017 Solar Eclipse over Southern Illinois. The filmmakers recorded interviews with local leaders and experts from the space and science communities and captured reactions from hundreds of eclipse-watchers who flooded into the region for this once-in-a-lifetime event. “The most surprising thing for me was my emotional reaction when I watched the edited eclipse sequence for the first time,” shares Motyl. “I really felt the energy of the crowd inside the stadium,” he shares.
The filmmaking team worked closely with SIU students Joey Sears and Rish Chalam, freshmen students in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, to compile hundreds of hours of footage and interviews. In addition to documenting a significant regional event, the project also served as a tool to help cinema students gain professional experience. “It was a perfect team work exercise and such a valuable experience for students,” shares Stoffel. “It allowed the students to really see how a project this large is put together, and then executed beautifully, and smoothly,” Motyl adds. The resulting documentary highlights the history, the science, and above all, the shared experience of witnessing one of nature’s most spectacular displays. Tune in Sat, May 12 at 7pm and Sun, May 13 at 3pm. In the Shadow on WSIU TV is sponsored locally by Southern Illinois Healthcare, AES Solar, and First Southern Bank.
