WSIU, NPR Illinois, and AARP hosted the public Town Hall “Election 2018: Seeking Solutions” on August 30 at the Varsity Center in Carbondale.

Approximately 50 community members attended and posed questions to panelists about prominent issues discussed by candidates in the 2018 Illinois gubernatorial election. Topics discussed included how access to resources affects southern Illinois in a unique way and the importance of equal access to education, healthcare, transportation, and economic opportunity. Sean Crawford (top left in photo), News Director for NPR Illinois, moderated the forum. WSIU to present election specials WSIU is partnering with the Southern Illinoisan to bring you coverage of the 2018 Midterm Election. WSIU and the Southern Illinois Immigrant Rights hosted a Community Cinema screening and discussion of an episode of the PBS film Homeland: Immigration in America at Carbondale’s Varsity Center on August 26.

Moderators were Cindy Buys, Professor of Law and Director of International Law Programs at the SIU School of Law; Wayne Sirles of Rendleman Orchards; and Scott Gilbert of the SIU Department of Economics.

Fifty people attended the free screening and discussion, which focused on immigration laws and programs as they relate to the economy.
