SPOTLIGHT ON LITERATURE ENJOY PROFILES OF LITERARY ICONS AND TUNE IN FOR NEW ADVENTURES FROM ONE OF LITERATURE’S MOST MEMORABLE CHARACTERS This month, as a complement to The Great American Read, PBS highlights authors who have captured the imagination of the nation through their inspiring literary works. Enjoy American Master’s profiles of Harper Lee, author of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and Margaret Mitchell who penned the sweeping civil war epic, “Gone With the Wind.” Join America’s favorite visual storyteller, Ken Burns, as he presents an illuminating portrait of Samuel Clemens in a two-part documentary special profiling the man once considered to be the funniest man in America. MARGARET MITCHELL: AN AMERICAN REBEL

HARPER LEE: AMERICAN MASTERS

No ordinary writer - or woman - Mitchell was a charismatic force who challenged the Southern social order and struggled with the changing role of women and the liberation of African Americans. Tune in for her profile on Tue, Sept. 11 at 8pm.

KEN BURNS: MARK TWAIN Ken Burns: Mark Twain tells the story of the writer’s extraordinary life in two parts. Part one covers Clemens’ early life along the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Missouri, charts his rebirth as Mark Twain, and concludes with the publication of “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Part two explores the other side of the writer - an American icon who, through tragedy and bad financial decisions, falls hard with failure. Tune in Sat, Sept. 1 at 3pm for part one and Tue, Sept. 4 at 7pm for part two. ANNE OF GREEN GABLES RETURNS TO WSIU Don’t miss the third installment of the classic Lucy Maud Montgomery story about a freespirited teenager living on Prince Edward Island. Not only does the film provide an exploration into the history and formation of one of the nation’s greatest medicial insitutuions, but it also follows the stories of patients who have come to the Clinic looking for answers — and hope. They include:

“The history of healthcare is a larger reflection of who we are as a nation. It includes advances in science and technology, but also touches on more universal themes of love and compassion.” – KEN BURNS,
