The Granddaddy of Them All!

I

n America we have a habit of comparing things with a favorable eye toward the biggest or most spectacular. Media comparisons generally have to do with size of products for sale; however, in a recent discussion with some public broadcasting journalists, I heard this fall’s general election described as “the Super Bowl for journalists!” I laughed initially, but then paused to consider just how fair the comparison really was. Typically the Super Bowl is the most watched television event of the year, topping more than 100 million viewers. It caps off an exhausting series of pre-season and regular season games during which teams try to earn the right to square off against league leaders before meeting a final challenger in the year’s climactic event.

In comparison to the general election, candidates begin testing their platform of ideas in the pre-season. When the actual season begins, there are an exhausting series of speeches, town-hall forums, door-todoor visits, and commercials designed to separate the front-runners from the rest of the pack. Ultimately, the candidates who survive the regular season move to the primaries where they compete for the right to meet finalists in the general election.

“WSIU brings a quality of programming and a consistency you can’t find anywhere else.” Scott McClatchey, Carbondale, Illinois

I returned to Carbondale in July of 2004 and decided that as a radio and television geek, I’d like to find somewhere I could volunteer as a hobby, which turned me to WSIU.

A key difference may lie in the weeks prior to each event. Before the Super Bowl, there is a two-week break, where very little happens (or at least little that seems to influence the game’s outcome). The sports media perseveres with stories about anything and everything that can be loosely considered Super Bowl related, but the two weeks before the big game are largely considered inconsequential.

After college, I became a fan of NOVA. Now I love to watch the interviews by Charlie Rose and many of the travel shows, like Rick Steves and Rudy Maxa. The travel shows on WSIU are fun, entertaining, and educational. My wife and I are always watching and dreaming about where we want to go next.

Not so with the general election, where one could argue that the two weeks prior to the vote are some of the most exciting times in the whole season. Campaigns are often made by the things a candidate will (or will not) say during that period. Candidates make as many public appearances in the two weeks prior to the election as they do in the months preceding. Nearly everything that happens in the two weeks before the election has potential to influence voters at the polls.

I also had a great experience watching Ken Burns’ The War with my son. He was learning about World War II in school, and the show helped him to visualize and personalize the landing on Omaha beach. I think it meant a lot to him to see how this event really happened.

WSIU will not be televising the Super Bowl this year, but we are working on bringing our viewers two significant live debates in the weeks prior to the general election: Illinois Governor on Oct 14 and U.S. Senate on Oct 21. These won’t be the only debates this season (see page four), but with our track record for insightful and informed political coverage, I’ll go out on a limb and say these debates may just be “the Granddaddy of Them All.”

s part of our Decision 2010 election series, WSIU is teaming up with media and public policy analysts to bring live debates between the leading candidates for U.S. Senate and Governor of Illinois to public broadcasting stations across the state this October.

WSIU, the Southern Illinoisan, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, the Institute for Government and Public Affairs, and Illinois Public Media (WILL TV/AM/FM) have partnered to submit proposals for U.S. Senate and gubernatorial debates in Carbondale and Champaign-Urbana. The debates will include questioning by experienced journalists, public policy experts, and members of the public who will be able to submit questions to the candidates online at wsiu.org. Tentative dates are Oct 14 for the gubernatorial debate and Oct 21 for the U.S. Senate debate. WSIU InFocus also will offer interviews with candidates for the Illinois General Assembly and U.S. House of Representatives on Friday nights in October (see below). The half-hour, unscripted interviews will feature questions from WSIU-TV’s Jak Tichenor, Jennifer Fuller of WSIU Radio, and Rob Crow of the Southern Illinoisan.

ilmmaker Ken Burns, director of the landmark PBS series, Baseball, brings the program into the present day with The Tenth Inning. This two-part documentary tells the tumultuous story of America’s national pastime from the early 1990s to today, introducing an unforgettable array of players, teams, and fans; celebrating the game’s resilience and enduring appeal; and showcasing both extraordinary accomplishments and devastating losses and disappointments. Burns and co-director Lynn Novick combine extraordinary highlights, stunning still photographs, popular music of the period, and insightful commentary by players, managers, experts, and fans. The Tenth Inning interweaves the story of the national pastime with the story of America. In an age of globalization, deregulation, and speculation, the film demonstrates that baseball has continued to be a mirror of the country – at both its best and at its worst. Get an inside look at this fascinating sport as baseball’s greatest writers and broadcasters share their perspectives on the events of the last 15 years, including the gripping stories of greats Joe Torre, Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Pedro

Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki, Cal Ripken Jr., and Barry Bonds.

Episode Guide Top of the Tenth – 9/28, 7pm (repeats at 9pm) In 1994, baseball faced its worst crisis in 70 years when a prolonged strike alienates many of the most loyal fans. Baseball has to rebuild…and rebuild it does, with new stadiums, an infusion of new players from Latin America, and the shattering of historic records. Bottom of the Tenth – 9/29, 7pm (repeats at 9pm) A new generation of pitchers and international players dominate the game, the Red Sox break an 86-year-old “curse” by winning the World Series and Barry Bonds, under the looming specter of steroids, closes in on a historic record.

ow has religious belief shaped the social, political, and cultural life of the world’s most religiously diverse nation?

Franciscan friars who came to convert them. New England preachers kindle a rebellious spirit that fuels the American Revolution.

God in America, a presentation of American Experience and Frontline, will examine the potent and complex interaction between religion and democracy, the origins of the American concept of religious liberty, and the controversial evolution of that ideal in the nation’s courts and political arena.

Later, a political alliance between evangelical Baptists and enlightenment figures forges a new concept of religious freedom and, ultimately, the Bill of Rights. The country pushes westward, creating a vibrant and sometimes volatile religious marketplace.

Religious energy surges through the nation, fueling the Cold War fight against communism and driving the Civil Rights movement. American presidents seek the approval of the evangelist Billy Graham, while civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. calls upon the nation to honor the commitment of the founding fathers to the principles of freedom and social justice. The final hour explores the political aspirations of the religious right, the dynamics of the contemporary religious marketplace, the re-emergence of a religious voice in the Democratic Party, and the growth of those who consider themselves “spiritual but not religious.”

Religion continues to shape America’s identity during the Civil War. As Northern abolitionists and Southern slaveholders clash over the question of slavery, each side turns to the Bible to argue its cause. More Summer Reading Events! Carbondale Park District Celebration

W

SIU partnered with the Carbondale Park District to bring PBS KIDS Raising Readers to the summer reading programs at Kids Korner and the Alice Wright Childhood Center. Leona from Between the Lions delighted teachers and posed with children for photos. Kids played literacy games, including “Gawain’s Word” with jousting knight puppets. Teachers also introduced space themes to students using The Electric Company resources.

Kids enjoyed special appearances by PBS KIDS characters SuperWHY! and Leona the Lion, vocabulary games, reading together, creating books, giveaways, and hands-on learning at the online literacy destinations PBS KIDS Island (for ages 3-6) and The Great Word Quest (for ages 6-8). Tracy McSherry-McKown of New Country Z100-FM and Lia Mira of Today’s Hit Music CIL-FM presented live radio remotes at each event so kids could share the fun on the air. Many thanks to dedicated children’s librarians Brenda Funkhouser, Amy Gilkey, Irena Just, Pat Luebke, and Pam Urban for their assistance.

Herrin District Schools Reading Wrap-up

W

SIU and Leona the Lion celebrated the conclusion of the Herrin School District’s participation in an eight-week summer reading program based on the PBS KIDS programs Martha Speaks and Between the Lions. The celebration was held at a summer festival on the grounds of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and School on Saturday, July 17. Extreme heat tempered attendance at the celebration, but approximately 40 children in kindergarten through the 8th grade participated in the summer reading program, which paired young students (little buddies) with older kids (big buddies) to share books, participate in vocabulary games, and conduct other research-based activities designed to strengthen literacy and social skills. At the reading celebration, children were presented with certificates of achievement and enjoyed visiting with Leona, playing word games, and taking home PBS KIDS giveaways.

WSIU expanded PBS KIDS Library Corners program in local libraries this summer as part of our participation in PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a federally-funded national initiative that uses the power of media to help improve the reading skills of young children, with an emphasis on children from low-income families. WSIU is a Raising Readers station. Library Corners are designed to give children ages 2-8 the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills through free, fun activities. Additional library events are being planned at community and school libraries around the region this fall.

For more information about Library Corners and PBS KIDS Raising Readers, contact Beth Spezia at (618) 453-5595 or beth.spezia@ wsiu.org.

SPONSOR PROFILE Scott McClatchey, Alliance Investment Planning Group in promoting positive change and supporting fairness, balance, candor, and transparency in broadcasting. Public broadcasting is still the least-politicized of the major media outlets in operation today.”

S

cott McClatchey and his team at the Alliance Investment Planning Group provide investment advisory services for individuals, families, and business owners. Services include financial planning, investment strategies and advice, retirement planning, college savings plans, insurance, and risk management. Scott sponsors an array of programs on WSIU-TV, including Antiques Roadshow, NOVA, Frontline, American Experience, This Old House Hour, Soundstage, and History Detectives, among others. He also sponsors news programming on WSIU Radio news. “We feel a common bond with public broadcasting viewers and listeners in terms of a shared belief

Scott also volunteers on the WSIU Friends Board, recently completing a term as Board president. “WSIU Public Broadcasting is a unique, essential public resource,” says Scott. “It strengthens our region and supports the people of southern Illinois. Especially close to my heart are WSIU outreach activities like Raising Readers, PBS Teacherline, SIRIS, SciGirls, Library Corners, The Electric Company Circuit Tour, and Biz Kid$. Public broadcasting belongs to us; we need to support it to keep it alive and healthy.” Scott notes, “Since my sponsorship began, I’ve received numerous comments – all positive – and several ‘thank you’s’ from members of the community. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised at how many people who support
