More Time With Digital... Means More Time with WSIU Twenty years ago, there were few things Americans spent more time with each week than their television. A recently published report, however, estimates that the average time spent with digital media per day will surpass TV viewing time this year for the first time. According to the online publication eMarketer, the average adult will spend over 5 hours per day online, on non-voice mobile activities, or with other digital media this year, compared to 4 hours and 31 minutes watching television. The most significant growth area is on mobile, where adults will spend an average of 2 hours and 21 minutes per day on non-voice mobile activities, including mobile internet usage on phones and tablets – longer than they will spend online and on desktop and laptop computers, and nearly an hour more than they spent on mobile last year. You can see more details and the full report at emarketer.com.
There is no doubt that the digital horse is not only out of the barn, but he’s gone mobile. Digital communication is anytime, anywhere, and the technology is always at least a gallop or two ahead of us. But public television viewers know all too well that technology is one thing and content is another. We’ve lived through the explosion of television channels from the days of three or four over the air channels, to basic cable, to digital cable and home satellite, and now to broadband and wireless. As the number of channels blossomed, there was always great promise of more quality choices and more appealing content. That promise remains unfulfilled.
Who among us hasn’t uttered the phrase, “I get 200 channels but I only watch a handful.” It seems that no matter how many new offerings come our way, wrapped in both hype and promise, we find ourselves back viewing PBS and WSIU – an independent voice that has proven time and time again to be high quality, locally relevant, non-commercial, and a personal fit for the way we live our lives.
The search for quality in the mobile/digital world will be even more challenging as the number of choices rises logarithmically, and editorial control is increasingly obfuscated. Trusted content from sources that remain transparent about their mission will continue to be at a premium. You can trust PBS and WSIU to lead the way.

Previews? What’s New in
We’ve made Previews bigger and (we hope) better!
You’ll notice that our program guide length is now at 32 pages, up from 24 pages, beginning with this issue. With a gain of eight pages, we can bring you more programming spotlights, local station announcements, and news from local production and community engagement. See these stories on pages 4-10.
We’ve also expanded our WSIU WORLD grid to include a 24hour programming cycle on pages 12-14. Please note that we can only provide WORLD listings for the first month listed in our bimonthly guide because PBS doesn’t release the second month’s WORLD listings until long after our print deadline. As always, you can find our WSIU HD, WORLD, and CREATE schedules online at www.wsiu.org. Just place your cursor on the “Television” tab on our homepage, select the “full program schedule” option, and click on the WSIU HD, WORLD, or CREATE channel links to view programming schedules by day or week. Finally, we’ve also added dedicated space for WSIU Radio content, including the broadcast schedules for our primary News & Classical Music channels – WSIU 91.9, 90.3, 88.9 FM & 91.9 HD1 – and WSIU 91.9 HD2, our News & Talk channel. You’ll find this issue’s WSIU Radio content on pages 29-31.
We hope the changes we’ve made to our Previews program guide will make it more informative and easier to use. If you have questions or recommendations about Previews, send an email to monica.tichenor@wsiu.org. Thank you for your support of WSIU-TV!

EARTH
flight
A second chance at first love.
A Nature Special Presentation Wednesdays 7pm Sept 11-Oct 9
Sundays 7pm
Photo: John Downer Productions.
What would it be like to see the world from a bird’s perspective? To experience riding on the backs of bald eagles and snow geese or flying alongside a flock of brown pelicans? State-of-the-art technology and sophisticated camera techniques have made it possible to do just that and more as Earthflight: A Nature Special Presentation takes you on an aerial adventure over six continents.
It took Earthflight series producer John Downer and his team four years to film more than 100 bird species in 40 different countries. Whether retracing the North American flight paths taken by thousands of migrating wild snow geese traveling to their Arctic breeding grounds or witnessing, for the first time, the aerobatics of devil rays as they somersault and splash back into the sea, the goal was to show the world on the wings of birds. Don’t miss this awe-inspiring journey around the world, as viewed through the eyes of birds. Learn more at www.pbs.org/wnet/nature.
Full of zesty humor, authentic characters, and glorious dialogue, this comedy-drama about romance and second chances stars Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid as former childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowers in their 70s, who fall for each other again after 60 years apart. Episode 2, Sept 15 | Celia and Alan are enjoying their new life together, but widowed Gillian and separated Caroline have problems with their own children and partners. Episode 3, Sept 22 | Celia and Alan decide on a civil ceremony at an eerie medieval hall near Halifax. As they visit, a storm knocks out the lights, and they find themselves locked in the building.
Sept 8-Oct 13 Episode 4, Sept 29 | A police search begins for Alan and Celia, who are locked inside the hall without phone service. Fearing for their parents, Caroline and Gillian form a supportive bond. Episode 5, Oct 6 | Caroline throws
herself into her new relationship with Kate. Alan and Celia have lunch in the pub with Harry and Maurice, who will serve as best men at the wedding.
Episode 6, Oct 13 | The wedding is
called off after Celia reacts badly to learning that Caroline is gay. Alan suffers a heart attack, and Celia rushes to his side. After Celia patches things up with Caroline, the wedding is back on. Proudly sponsored on WSIU/WUSI-TV by

WSIU Public Television to Air New Local Documentary on Former U.S. Senator Paul Simon P.S. Illinois: The Paul Simon Story
Thu, Oct 24, 9pm | also 10/27, 1:30pm & 11/28, 9pm “Paul Simon was one of the most outstanding political leaders the State of Illinois has ever produced,” says John S. Jackson, visiting professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. “This documentary will become a classic treatment of an Illinois political giant. “ Paul Simon at his home in Makanda. Photo: University Communications, SIU.
Written and produced by WSIU-TV senior producer Jak Tichenor, P.S. Illinois: The Paul Simon Story, A Life of Uncommon Courage is a 90-minute documentary chronicling the life of the late corruption fighting newspaper publisher and former Lieutenant Governor, U.S Congressman, and U.S. Senator Paul Simon (1928-2003). Simon also taught political science, history, and journalism at SIU Carbondale and founded the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at the university.
The program covers Simon’s life and distinguished career from his early days as a crusading journalist in Troy, Illinois (photo above left, courtesy of the Simon family) to his service in the Illinois General Assembly as a Representative and Senator, to his statewide service as Lt. Governor, and then through his five terms in the U. S. House and two terms in the U. S. Senate. It also provides personal interviews with friends and family, and those who worked with him closely in government.
The documentary project began in 2001 when SIU Cinema and Photography undergraduate student Erik Mauck began interviewing many of Simon’s colleagues, family, and friends.
“Erik was absolutely tireless in seeking out everyone from Paul’s mother, Ruth, to former legislative colleagues Anthony “Tony” Scariano, Alan Dixon, Abner Mikva, and others,” says producer Jak Tichenor.
Former Simon campaign advisor David Axelrod, former Saturday Night Live comedian and current U.S. Senator Al Franken, Troy Tribune staffer Ray Johnson, SIU history professor John Y. Simon, daughter and son Sheila and Martin Simon, and former St. Louis PostDispatch Statehouse correspondent Taylor Pensoneau are just a few of the dozens of people Mauck interviewed for the project. Tichenor, who had covered Simon’s career since 1981, began collecting interviews for the documentary following Simon’s passing. He talked with author Studs Terkel, Washington Post political reporter David Broder, America’s Most Wanted host John Walsh, and former Simon press secretary Terry Michael, among others. Chicago reporters Carol Marin and Andy Shaw also shared their insights into Simon’s career, along with former Des Moines Register political reporter and current Simon Institute executive director David Yepsen.
Paul Simon (foreground) talks with Mike Lawrence, former press secretary to Illinois Governor Jim Edgar and former associate director and director, on the grounds of the Simon Institute. Photo: University Communications, SIU.
The film offers many personal insights into Simon’s character and values. “My religious beliefs tell me you ought to help poor people,” Simon recalls in the documentary.
“My father lived that, he preached that. He grew up on a dairy farm. I remember him saying: ‘even your cows ought to know that you’re a Christian.’ Meaning, you have to treat animals with respect, as well as people. And I believe that’s what we have to do. Kind of a basic philosophy of government.”
In addition to its local broadcast debut, the Simon documentary will be offered to other Illinois Public Television stations and will also be used in journalism and political science classes. “Students sometimes ask me who Paul Simon was,” says David Yepsen. “This film is a wonderful way to introduce him to them. Told by the people who knew him best, it speaks to a younger generation. It offers hope that politics as we know it could be better – a lot better.”

“Thank you so much for the excellent international programming you arranged for our local children’s summer reading programs in southern Illinois. The children and adults at Brehm Memorial Public Library were enthralled with the films and the student ambassadors. You definitely broadened our horizons and showed that books and film can take you many places. Again, thank you for your excellent programming additions to ‘Have Book, Will Travel.’ Looking forward to working with you again.” Sharon Yearwood, Children’s Librarian, C.E.
