WSIU Begins TV & Studio Production Renovation Before

Expand Your World with WSIU PBS programming on WSIU has changed the lives of so many people in this region. Our educational and informational content – delivered direct to living rooms – has been opening eyes, expanding minds, and inviting discussion for more than 50 years. And while the advent of digital television may have caused a few difficulties for some viewers, it has had a much more positive effect than most had hoped. Digital TV made good on the long awaited promise of a true high-definition experience. The wide-screen, high-definition format became the overwhelming standard for all broadcast viewing much more quickly than anybody anticipated.

Digital television also reduced picture interference that caused “ghosting” and “picket fencing”, and it eliminated the dreaded tin foil wrapped rabbit ears. But perhaps most important to this region is the added bonus of additional channel capacity and diversity of programming for over the air broadcasting. In big cities like Chicago, over the air viewers have enjoyed numerous TV channels free of charge for years, simply by hooking up an antenna. But in our region, viewers considered themselves lucky if they could receive all four stations depending on where their house was located or which way the wind was blowing.

Now with digital television, and its multicast capabilities, broadcasters like WSIU can provide up to three simultaneous channels with a wide array of programming, and all for free with the proper antenna.

WSIU WORLD, our second channel, offers a perfect mix of the best PBS has to offer throughout the day. Global perspectives are prominent with offerings such as Newsline, Asia This Week, European Journal, and Global Voices. It also features mainstays such as Charlie Rose and PBS NewsHour at different times throughout the day that may be more convenient for some members of our audience.

We’re excited to share news about WSIU’s ongoing renovations to our Television Studio Production and Post-Production facilities. Once completed, our studio facilities will feature all digital Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) production equipment, and two large multi-display flat panels replacing outdated black and white analog video monitors.

Central to the upgrade is the installation of a digital video switcher, donated by WSIL-TV 3, which will complete an all digital stream from the studio cameras and graphics computers to WSIU’s transmitters. WSIL-TV 3 also donated studio cameras, which are being used by students every day as part of this renovation. Next on the agenda is the installation of a second TV Studio Production Control Room, which will feature all HD equipment. When completed, students, faculty, and staff will enjoy the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in two state-of-the-art television production facilities!

For more information about our TV Studio Production renovations, contact Darryl Moses, Associate Director, TV & Video Services, at darryl.moses@wsiu.org.

After

And not to be forgotten, our WSIU CREATE channel features a 24-hour lineup of cooking, crafting, woodworking, and travel – programs that can truly inspire us all to do more and be more.

Of course the best part is that all of this comes to you for free (well, sort of). We do greatly appreciate your annual gift and knowing that we’re providing one more service that helps to make this region such a great place to live.

NOVA Cold Case JFK Wed, Nov 13 | 8pm

Fifty years later, what can science tell us about the Kennedy assassination – and the investigations that followed? The 1963 murder, in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses, was a homicide investigator’s best-case scenario. Yet somehow the JFK assassination became a forensic nightmare. Now, NOVA follows a group of experts trying to unravel the lingering mysteries of the assassination.

Forever enshrined in myth by an assassin’s bullet, John F. Kennedy’s presidency has often defied objective appraisal. This new portrait offers a fresh assessment of the man, his accomplishments and his unfulfilled promise.

Beginning with Kennedy’s childhood years as the privileged but sickly second son of one of the wealthiest men in America, the film explores his early political career and the game-changing presidential campaign that made him the youngest elected president in U.S. history.

SIRIS Classic Vinyl & Media Sale Raises over $6,000 and volunteers, WSIU staff members and students, and community volunteers who sorted items, assisted with set up and clean up, and worked at the sale.

A special thank you to our long-time sponsor Former WSIU student employee and SIU grad the University Mall Audrey Lamb (right) assists a customer. for providing the sale location for the sixth straight year and for serving as a donation site, along with fellow sponsors the SIU Credit Union in Carbondale, Energy, Marion, Harrisburg, and Metropolis, and Wright Do-It Center in Murphysboro

Shoppers search collectible albums for one-of-a-kind bargains.

WSIU, in partnership with six-year sponsor the University Mall of Carbondale, would like to thank everyone who came to the 6th Annual SIRIS Classic Vinyl & Media Sale at the mall on September 7-8. This year we raised a total of $6,561.25! As most of you know, the sale supports the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service, which provides local and national programming around the clock to over 1,000 residents who are blind or have a physical condition that makes reading difficult.

We could not have achieved such success without the leadership of SIU graduate and former WSIU student employee Robby Ballard, who did a fantastic job coordinating all aspects of this year’s sale. We also appreciate the guidance of former SIRIS Director and sale coordinator, Vickie Devenport, and Will Devenport who both assisted before, during, and after the sale. We’d also like to thank SIRIS operations manager Rob Kern, our SIRIS board members

Finally, we’d like to thank the SIU College of Applied Science and Arts (CASA) and students from CASA’s Electronics Club, who checked and repaired donated equipment, and the SIU student-run radio station WIDB, who hosted a live remote at the sale.

Thank you, everyone!

POV and StoryCorps Present...

Listening is an Act of Love: A StoryCorps Special Thu, Nov 28, 10:30pm • on WSIU-TV This animated program from the radio project StoryCorps celebrates the transformative power of listening. Says StoryCorps founder Dave Isay, “We can learn so much about the people all around us – even about the people we already know – just by taking the time to have a conversation.”

The program features 10 years of the innovative oral history project, when everyday people sit down together to share memories and tackle life’s important questions. Framing these intimate conversations is an interview between StoryCorps founder Dave Isay and his inquisitive 9-year-old nephew, Benji.
