A Sustaining Commitment for the New Year Since you are receiving this copy of Previews, you are almost certainly a financial supporter of WSIU. In fact, some of you have been making gifts to WSIU every year for many years. It’s an admirable commitment to support such a vital public broadcasting service – one that has served southern Illinois and the surrounding region for more than 50 years.
and wsiu-tv to host governor primary debate

Over the years, we’ve tried to be innovative when it comes to program selection, program creation, and, of course, leading the nation in student training opportunities. We’ve also innovated when it comes to methods for accepting your gift: adding credit cards and online giving, along with cash and checks. One method of giving that is gaining momentum with our donors every year is the sustaining membership in WSIU. Sustaining members choose the amount they wish to give monthly and make their investment via automatic credit card or bank account fund transfer. As a sustaining member, your gift occurs automatically on the schedule you decide and for the exact amount you determine. For WSIU, it means a steady and predictable schedule for the vital support we depend on to produce the programs you enjoy. You may increase, decrease, or stop your gift at any time. Or preferably, you can just sit back and enjoy all the great programming on WSIU, knowing that you’re perpetually supporting WSIU in a very efficient and reliable manner. I hope you’ll join me in considering a sustaining membership in WSIU. As a current supporter it’s easy to make the switch and if you’ve never given before, it’s a great way to start the new year.
Greg Petrowich Executive Director, WSIU Public Broadcasting

THE DRAMA CONTINUES The most-watched drama in PBS history enters its fourth gripping season with the whole world waiting to learn how the beloved characters deal with a shocking tragedy. Change is in the air as three generations of the Crawley family have conflicting interests in the estate.
NEW SEASON, NEW FACES Among the new faces this season are Paul Giamatti (Sideways) as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold (left), who appears in the season finalé; Dame Harriet Walter (Little Dorrit) as Violet’s old friend Lady Shackleton; Gary Carr (Death in Paradise) as jazz singer Jack Ross (above, middle photo); Joanna David (Bleak House) as the Duchess of Yeovil; Tom Cullen (World Without End) as Lord Gillingham, and Julian Ovenden (Smash) as an unexpected houseguest.
WSIU WELCOMES the new season of
SUNDAYS 8PM JANUARY 5-FEBRUARY 23 Spoiler alert! All who tuned in last season know that Matthew Crawley – heir to Downton Abbey, husband to Lady Mary, and brand new father to a baby boy and successor – lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. On top of this, the family is still grieving over the death in childbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind.
Season four opens six months later. Although it is the 1920s, Britain still observes mourning rituals that are almost Victorian in their solemnity. Nonetheless, the Crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: Robert, Lord Grantham, must manage the estate without his canny son-in-law; Cora suddenly faces a staffing crisis; Violet, who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; Isobel, Matthew’s mother, may never recover; Edith, who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new beau; and Mary now finds herself the most desirable widow in Yorkshire. The servants also pick up, buck up, and get on with it – with new arrivals, departures, rivalries, and betrayals among the downstairs staff. Life goes on at Downton Abbey.

Expressions is back for a third season! Student producer Rajvee Subramanian will be returning this year and says viewers can expect a few changes. Most notably is the new set for the show. There also will be fewer episodes this season – only 13 compared to last season’s 18.
Viewers shouldn’t worry, though. Subramanian guarantees fresh new artists this season. “Last year we [featured] a lot of metalsmiths. We focused mainly on Carbondale, Paducah, and Makanda,” says Subramanian. “This year we’re reaching out to Marion, Anna, and Cobden. We’re trying to focus on more diverse groups of artists.”
Subramanian encourages art enthusiasts to watch this season and to offer their
feedback. “This program is for the artists and the community. Without them we are nothing,” he says. “I want them to embrace [the show] and give feedback, whether it’s positive or negative.”
Subramanian also wants the show and its guests to prosper. “I hope Expressions can continue to express itself in a way that Friday, 8 |communities 7:30pm supportsNovember the artists and the in southern Illinois for a long time,” he says. “I’m optimistic about the future of Expressions and the artists featured, and hopes fans will enjoy the season’s changes.” Season three of Expressions begins Thursday, January 2 at 9pm with Kris Killman, a watercolorist from Marion, and Abraham Hunter, a wildlife artist from Goreville. Repeats will air on January 5 at 2pm and 5:30pm.
Chasing Shackleton and Super Skyscrapers Arrive on WSIU
Chasing Shackleton Wednesdays, Jan 8-22 • 9pm
The Alexander Shackleton in the sun. Photo: Ed Wardle.
This three-part series follows a modern expedition that recreates Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic Expedition. A crew of five intrepid explorers, led by renowned adventurer, scientist, and author Tim Jarvis, duplicate Shackleton’s epic voyage in a replica of the original explorers’ lifeboat, James Caird, using only the tools and supplies his team used. When his ship The Endurance was crushed by ice and sank, Shackleton’s heroic leadership in the face of almost certain death saved the lives of 27 men stranded more than 500 days.
Super Skyscrapers
Wednesdays, Feb 5-26 • 9pm As urban space shrinks, we build higher and faster than ever before, creating a new generation of skyscrapers. Super skyscrapers are pushing the limits of engineering, technology, and design to become greener, stronger, smarter, and more luxurious than their predecessors. This four-part series follows the creation of four extraordinary buildings, showcasing how they will revolutionize the way we live, work, and protect ourselves from potential threats.

We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.”
Last fall, WSIU helped a local group of visionaries to realize goals of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation grant award in a project known as “In My Neighborhood.” For this award, 240 fourth graders spent a semester developing a multi-faceted creative arts enrichment project.
R. Buckminster Fuller
WSIU coordinated photography and videography with Herrin Elementary School; Herrin City Library and Children’s Librarian Irena Just; SIU School of Architecture Professor Jon Davey and graduate student Michelle Harris; Professional Architect Gail White; and SIU College of Education students Lenzi Dean, Courtney Grandfield, and James Lockhart.
Kids learned about children’s author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (photo above), explored the idea of neighborhood, and studied architectural concepts and applied them by contrasting contemporary and historic buildings in downtown Herrin. They also experimented with hands-on mini-dome construction following the model of R. Buckminster Fuller and created unique collages depicting their neighborhoods under the direction of art instructor Brad Moore.
The SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts (MCMA), the Carbondale Public Library, and WSIU continue the 2013-14 season of Community Cinema.
Unfortunately, the Community Cinema film screening of The State of Arizona held a few challenges. It was cancelled twice: once due to production issues and the next time due to weather. There are plans to reschedule, but the date has not been announced yet.

ACOUSTIC NATURE HOUR President Bill Clinton signs NAFTA into law, December 8, 1993. Photo: White House.
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that melded the U.S., Mexico, and Canada into a single market reshaped life along the borders and altered the way business is conducted globally. Signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993, NAFTA took effect January 1, 1994. NAFTA: 20 Years On looks back at the debate that shaped the agreement and at the changes that it created. Visit NPR.org to see Senior Business Editor Marilyn Geewax stories about NAFTA then and now.
