More Time With Digital... Means More Time with WSIU Twenty years ago, there were very few things Americans spent more time with each week than their television. A recently published report, however, estimates that the average time spent with digital media per day will surpass TV viewing time this year for the first time.

According to the online publication eMarketer the average adult will spend over 5 hours per day online, on non-voice mobile activities, or with other digital media this year, compared to 4 hours and 31 minutes watching television. The most significant growth area is on mobile, where adults will spend an average of 2 hours and 21 minutes per day on non-voice mobile activities, including mobile internet usage on phones and tablets – longer than they will spend online and on desktop and laptop computers, and nearly an hour more than they spent on mobile last year. You can see more details and the full report at emarketer.com. There is no doubt that the digital horse is not only out of the barn, but he’s gone mobile. Digital communication is anytime, anywhere, and the technology is always at least a gallop or two ahead of us. But public television viewers know all too well that technology is one thing and content is another. We’ve lived through the explosion of television channels from the days of three or four over the air channels, to basic cable, to digital cable and home satellite, and now to broadband and wireless. As the number of channels blossomed, there was always great promise of more quality choices and more appealing content. That promise remains unfulfilled. Who among us hasn’t uttered the phrase, “I get 200 channels but I only watch a handful.” It seems that no matter how many new offerings come our way, wrapped in both hype and promise, we find ourselves back viewing PBS and WSIU. An independent voice that has proven time and time again to be high quality, locally relevant, non-commercial, and a personal fit for the way we live our lives.

The search for quality in the mobile/digital world will be even more challenging as the number of choices rises logarithmically, and editorial control is increasingly obfuscated. Trusted content from sources that remain transparent about their mission will continue to be at a premium. You can trust PBS and WSIU to lead the way.

WSIU Staff Member Wins National Award Congratulations to WSIU Public Broadcasting staffer Renée Ferrell Dillard, Director of Marketing and Corporate Support, who was named the 2014 Development Professional of the Year by the Public Radio Association of Development Officers (PRADO). Dillard, with WSIU since 1992, was presented with the award at the 2014 Public Media Development and Market Conference (PMDMC), held in Denver, Colorado in July.

Sponsored by Greater Public, a non-profit organization offering development and marketing expertise to public media stations, the PMDMC is public media’s largest conference devoted to revenue generation, marketing, and management. The PRADO Development Professional of the Year Award is presented to a station-based individual who has demonstrated excellence at his or her local station.

Dillard assumed oversight of WSIU’s overall development activities in 2004 and advocated for a stronger focus on corporate support. Named Director of Marketing and Corporate Support in 2010, she oversees all business and community relations partnerships for WSIU. Since 2005, Dillard has increased WSIU’s business revenue from $165,000 to nearly $600,000 per year, setting new records for the past eight years and significantly outpacing partnership levels from similar markets around the country. This has brought WSIU to nearly twothirds of the long-term goal for partnership revenue, critically needed in combination with gifts from individual viewers and listeners and the support received from state and federal sources. “I am consistently surprised by Renee’s goals for corporate support, which are always stretch goals,” said Greg Petrowich, Executive Director of WSIU Public Broadcasting. “After working with her for five years, I am no longer surprised when she reaches those goals. Her success is grounded in detailed research, sound choices in prospective partners, and a customer-first focus.” Dillard is quick to credit WSIU co-workers for these accomplishments. “Ellen Carlson, Assistant Director of Corporate Support, has been a terrific addition,” says Dillard. “Virtually every staff member at WSIU helps with some part of this process, allowing us to innovate each aspect of how we engage our business partners. I can’t imagine a brighter or more dedicated team than we have at WSIU.” She also notes the generosity of WSIU’s corporate sponsors, who recognize public media’s value as a vital community resource and are willing to support it financially.

“Working directly with such a diverse group of business leaders is my favorite part of this job. Our sponsors are an incredibly accomplished bunch, whether they be nationally based or local family businesses – all are smart, innovative, creative people, and genuinely value public radio and television. On a side note, they invariably have a great sense of humor and warmth, so it’s great fun to know and work with them. They are sincerely committed to WSIU’s mission.” Dillard has been asked to share her strategic approach nationally and also works collaboratively with other Illinois public media stations.

September 14-20 7-9pm (repeats 9-11pm nightly)

BROADCAST SCHEDULE • 7-9PM NIGHTLY Ken Burns’ new film tells the stories of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics.

“The Roosevelts have played significant roles in other stories we’ve told before, from the National Parks to World War II,” says producer and director Ken Burns (photo above, PBS). “It’s impossible, in fact, to visit

many parts of the American experience without encountering their presence.”

THE ROOSEVELTS follows the family’s story from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of a century, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and the United States’ role within the wider world.

WEDNESDAY October 15 8pm WEDNESDAYS October 22-November 12 9pm led to the invention of air conditioning, which inspired mass migration and a political transformation.

Best-selling science and technology author Steven Johnson examines the stories of the unlikely people whose ideas have made our modern world possible in HOW WE GOT BACK TO NOW, a new six-part series he cocreated and hosts.

Topics explored include why and how ideas happen, and their sometimes unintended results, including how the search for clean water opened the way to invention of the iPhone and how the nagging problem of overheating in a New York printing business

Johnson explains how the answers to the questions he poses in each episode have driven other discoveries through the web of ideas and innovations that made each finding possible. Tracking each pursuit through history both ancient and contemporary, Johnson unlocks tales of unsung heroes and radical revolutions that changed the world and the way we live in it.

“It is very easy to take many of the conveniences that we encounter every day for granted,” says Johnson. “Most people wouldn’t think sipping a glass of ice water in the summer is very remarkable. Yet clear glass, clean water, and the ability to keep ice frozen in warm weather are all the products of innovations without which the world as we know it today would not exist. And amazingly, the amateur inventors, entrepreneurs, and tinkerers who made our modern world possible have nearly been forgotten to history.”

EPISODES 1 & 2 CLEAN / TIME OCT 15 Johnson explores how clean water has changed our world and how we live our lives. He also examines how time advanced navigation, technology, travel, and the way we work.

EPISODE 3 GLASS OCT 22

Johnson uncovers a link between art, science, and global communication: glass.

EPISODE 4 LIGHT OCT 29

Find out how light has altered sleeping patterns, architecture, and more.

EPISODE 5 COLD NOV 5

Johnson examines the effects of humankind’s mastery of cold on food, Hollywood, and more.

EPISODE 6 SOUND NOV 12

Learn about the impact of sound in the world of medicine and our lives today.

Girls Make Movies In June, sixteen high school students, some from as far away as Houston, Texas, spent a week learning the foundations of filmmaking and analysis, and also created their own short films, at the annual Girls Make Movies Camp, named by Ms. Magazine as one of the up-andcoming media organizations helping to increase the ranks of women in the entertainment and media industries.

Participants showed their work at week’s end at a reception for friends and family. Instructors included SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts (MCMA) faculty members Cade Bursell, Sarah Lewison, and Angela Aguayo, and Taylor Nygaard, Teaching Fellow at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. MCMA graduate students also provided assistance. Support for the camp comes from MCMA and SIU donors, camp alumni, and the greater Carbondale community, with funding provided by MCMA and the Illinois Broadcasters Association.

Friday, October 31 7am & 2:30pm It’s George’s first Halloween in the country, and Bill tells him and Allie about the “Legend of No Noggin”, a spooky tale about a hat-kicking scarecrow who haunts the countryside on Halloween. But is the legend real? George and Allie are determined to find out!

TV News Camp Eleven students, ranging in age from 13 to 17, came to SIU for six days of fun and learning during the annual TV News Camp in July. “They got to sample college life and learn firsthand about how a television news story is put together and how it gets on the air,” said News Camp Director and WSIU-TV News Director Greg Todd. Students reported on actual news stories about the SIU composting program, the Agriculture Department’s “green roof,” Architecture Camp, and St. Francis Care’s Animal Shelter in Murphysboro.

Students recorded on-camera interviews using professional news cameras, wrote and edited their news stories with supervision and mentoring from current SIU Radio, TV, and Digital Media (RTD) students and former news professionals from the RTD Department. RTD faculty members Joey Helleny and Eileen Waldron joined Todd in helping students learn the process. Several previous campers have graduated from SIU’s Communications program and are enjoying successful careers in the business. “A generous grant from the Illinois Broadcasters Association keeps the cost low for campers, around $100 for all six days,” said Todd. “That includes all meals, housing, and field trip transportation.” On the final day of camp, the students anchor a newscast they have put together. It’s recorded on the WSIU-TV set used for live newscasts by the student-produced news series River Region Evening Edition. WSIU staff members Darryl Moses and Abby Hargrave taught the students about the TV studio and control room.

TV News Camp is sponsored by MCMA, WSIU, the SIU Radio-TV-Digital Media, and SIU Continuing Education and Outreach.

WSIU Launches the Paul Simon Collection on Illinois PBS LearningMedia

WSIU is excited to announce the launch of P.S. Illinois: The Paul Simon Collection, WSIU’s first local content contribution to Illinois PBS LearningMedia.

This digital media resource is designed for use with United States and Illinois Government, World and American History, Current Events, Journalism, and General Social Studies courses in high schools and middle schools. A youngster at North Side Primary Center in Herrin, Illinois uses an iPad to access the PBS KIDS app “All Board the Dinosaur Train”. Kids learn how to problem-solve by estimating dinosaur sizes and comparing them with the train cars’ capacity. Photo: T. J. Price.

WSIU is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a Ready To Learn (RTL) Transmedia Demonstration Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS Ready to Learn, and the U.S. Department of Education. Together with WILL/Illinois Public Media in Urbana and WTVP in Peoria and working as the Illinois Education Collaborative, we will build a professional development and mobile media network over the next two years with the goal of engaging 12,000 educators and 13,000 children across central and southern Illinois.

WSIU’s focus in southern Illinois is Williamson County, an innovation zone for the state’s Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge pilot grant, which aims to expand access to early learning programs throughout the state.

Local community partners for this project include North Side Primary Center in Herrin, Herrin City Library, Child Care Resource & Referral, and the SIU Carbondale College of Education. This work expands upon existing mobile media labs at the Boys & Girls Club and SIU Child Development Laboratories, both in Carbondale.

Guess What’s Landed at WSIU?

WSIU is excited to announce the arrival of Plum Landing, an online environmental science project that helps elementary school students develop a love for and a connection to Earth. Games, apps, videos, and hands-on activities

are available on the website at pbskids.org/plumlanding.

With support from WGBH, producers of Plum Landing, WSIU will host a family project this fall. WSIU’s Get To Know Your World project will include a nature walk on the campus of SIU Carbondale and a learning session in SIU’s College of Mass Communication

Based on WSIU’s television documentary about the life of Paul Simon, an international diplomat, professor, and founder of the Public Policy Institute at SIU Carbondale, the collection consists of four teaching modules with videos and other media assets: • A Life of Uncommon Courage • Tapped Out and Running Dry • The Struggle for Human and Civil Rights • Strength Through Education

Lessons emphasized in the video clips are enriched with excerpts from The Essential Paul Simon: Timeless Lessons for Today’s Politics, edited by John S. Jackson. Dr. Jackson’s advice and support, in addition to his book, were critical to the development of this collection for educators nationwide.

Co-produced by WSIU staff member Beth Spezia and educational consultant Melanie Hammond, P.S. Illinois: The Paul Simon Collection is available free of charge to teachers and students at www.pbslearningmedia.org. Free training webinars and conference presentations about the new collection are planned throughout this academic year.

Part 1/3. 5am See Daytime Schedule. 7pm Roosevelts: An Intimate History. CC In the Arena (1901-1910). Murder brings Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency, but in the seven years that follow, he transforms the office by battling corporate greed and building the Panama Canal, preserving American wilderness, and carrying the message of American might around the world. FDR courts and weds Eleanor Roosevelt, the shy orphaned daughter of Theodore’s alcoholic brother, Elliott. Together, they begin a family. Franklin enters a law firm, but when he is offered a chance to run for the New York state senate, he jumps at the chance. Part 2/7. 9pm Roosevelts: An Intimate History.CC In the Arena (1901-1910). Franklin masters wartime Washington as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, while Eleanor finds personal salvation in war work. Her discovery of Franklin’s romance with another woman transforms their marriage into a largely political partnership. Teddy’s death at 60 is almost universally mourned, but provides Franklin with a golden opportunity. Part 3/7. 9pm Roosevelts: An Intimate History.CC The Fire of Life (1910-1919). Part 3/7. He spends seven years struggling to regain his health, while Eleanor builds a personal and political life of her own. FDR returns to politics in 1928 and, as governor of New York, acts with such vigor during the first years of the Great Depression that the Democrats turn to him as their presidential nominee in 1932. He survives an attempted assassination as president-elect and tells his countrymen the only thing they have to fear is “fear itself.” Part 4/7. 9pm Roosevelts: An Intimate History.CC The Storm (1920-1933). COMING IN NOVEMBER!

BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 28 REPEATS TUESDAYS 10:30PM In 2013, START UP introduced viewers to the intrepid world of small business, with a fresh and hip look at today’s new wave of entrepreneurs.

Season two continues to tell these fascinating stories, opening with a visit to Atlanta, Georgia to talk with Luke, of Sack Daddy’s seafood restaurant, to learn how an old family recipe has got the whole city swooning. And just to keep things real, Gary gets a hair-raising makeover from Heather of Custom Wig Company in Louisville, Kentucky, creator of fabulous hairpieces for customers all over the world. Other stops this season include Asheville, North Carolina; Birmingham, Alabama; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Detroit, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; St. Louis, Missouri; and Des Moines Iowa. The series also includes more ‘How To’ information and expert advice from business leaders.

A mouth-watering new series celebrating our region’s culinary treasures is coming to WSIU-TV in November, courtesy of the publishers of Feast Magazine.

Each monthly, half-hour episode of FEAST TV uncovers the Midwest’s most compelling food stories through in-depth segments covering a wide array of culinary content.

Producer Catherine Neville (photo left, courtesy of Feast TV) hosts the series, introducing the segments and conducting a cooking demo that progresses throughout the show, tying all of the elements together. Inspired by Feast’s print features, the series brings the pages of the magazine to life. “Our partnership with WSIU and WUSI allows us to connect with viewers across the entire region,” said Neville. “Our mission at Feast is to inspire people to explore the richness of local food culture and there is no television network more focused on enlightening and educating audiences than PBS. It’s a perfect fit.” Watch for details in the next issue of Previews!

Six new documentaries in the MAKERS project feature groundbreaking American women in different spheres of influence: war, comedy, space, business, Hollywood, and politics. Each program will profile prominent women and relate their struggles, triumphs, and contributions as they reshaped and transformed the landscape of their chosen vocations. The films, directed and produced by the country’s leading independent filmmakers, build on the multi-platform initiative developed by AOL that aims to be the largest collection of women’s stories ever assembled and includes a growing collection of over 250 original interviews online at makers.com.

“Makers is not just a media project, it is a movement,” said Dyllan McGee, Founder and Executive Producer of Makers. “Each documentary in this six-part series examines the impact of the women’s movement on six fields once largely closed to women.”
