“We’re excited about the opportunities for growth this unique partnership will provide,” says Dr. Jerald Gruebel, long-time President and CEO of Network Knowledge, who retired in November. “Uniting our stations opens the door to greater long-term sustainability, boosts local programming and educational services, and enhances the positive impact of public media for years to come.” In addition to WSIU TV/FM Carbondale, WUSI TV/FM Olney, and WVSI FM Mt. Vernon, WSIU will operate Network Knowledge’s three PBS member stations WSEC Springfield/Jacksonville, WMEC Macomb, and WQEC Quincy.
“This new partnership creates a unique public media enterprise for Illinois, reaching fivemillion residents across 67 counties,” says Greg Petrowich, Executive Director of WSIU, who will lead the combined organization. “Combining resources will bring the full range of top-tier PBS programming, delivered across multiple digital platforms, to almost twothirds of the state, and create new opportunities for people to engage with public media.” Among the benefits the partnership will provide are expanded coverage of state government and politics; a full-time dedicated PBS KIDS Channel; increased access to PBS LearningMedia, PBS Ready to Learn, and PBS KIDS resources; expansion of PBS Passport, a PBS on-demand member benefit; additional PBS film screenings and discussions; and new educational partnerships with public and private businesses and organizations.
