WSIU HONORS TOP STUDENTS WSIU recognized five student employees for exceptional work performance at our annual Cinco de Mayo-themed student appreciation dinner and awards ceremony on May 5. July Highlights WSIU Radio Listening Project Visits Benton Public Library WSIU Radio traveled to the BENTON PUBLIC LIBRARY in Benton, Ill. on May 21 where we recorded interviews with residents as part of the library’s centennial celebration. With invaluable assistance from event organizer Becky Lewis, library director Susan Stickel, and the library’s well-organized staff, WSIU Radio Community Engagement Producer, Kevin Boucher, captured fascinating interviews from nearly a dozen Benton residents. Among the guests: Bob Blondi and his son, Rob, who shared stories about their Italian heritage; retired southern Illinois coal miner Jack McReynolds who joined journalist Jim Muir for an Jack McReynolds enlightening discussion about life underground; basketball coach Rich Herrin, and former team members of the Benton High School boy’s basketball team, who shared life lessons learned on and off the court; historian Bob Rea, who talked about pivotal moments in regional history; retired educator Debbie Clark, who saw the library as a place of safety and exploration when she was the new kid in town; Rose Savko, who recalls the profound impact the library had on her as young child growing up in an immigrant neighborhood during the Depression; retired Benton school principal Gene Alexander,

WSIU to Join City of Olney for 175th Anniversary Celebration Join WSIU in Olney, Ill. as we help the city and Richland County celebrate their DODRANSBICENTENNIAL the weekend of Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24. WSIU will join in the fun on Saturday, July 23.

We’ll kick off our visit by participating in the anniversary parade, along with our PBS KIDS Literacy Van (provided courtesy of John A. Logan College), which begins at 9am on July 23 near the Immanuel United Methodist Church. While walking along the parade route, WSIU staff members and students will hand out vinyl stickers bearing the image of the white squirrel, the city’s mascot, and our WUSI station identification. Invisibilia Returns to WSIU Radio INVISIBILIA’S perspective on “unseen forces that shape human behavior” returns to WSIU Radio with seven hours of riveting stories from around the nation and the world. The series has also added a host in season two: author Hanna Rosin (top photo, left) joins hosts Alix Spiegel (center) and Lulu Miller (right). Among the people listeners will meet are a Russian man who had to learn to smile at work; men who give their coworkers foot rubs to build teamwork; a dog owner going to extreme lengths to understand her pet; and a man looking to upend the online dating industry. Excerpts and related original stories will also be featured on MORNING EDITION and ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.
