WSIU to Launch New & Improved Website
(618) 453-4343 greg.petrowich@wsiu.org
A Very Public Statement of Support Public media has been a vital part of this region for a long time. For more than 50 years, WSIU has been providing radio and television programming that resonates with our viewers and listeners. Public media also resonates with businesses that regularly choose to sponsor programming on WSIU. In fact, amidst the proliferation of traditional media broadcasts, multi-channel cable and satellite providers, and now the Internet, corporate support has reached an all time high at WSIU.
There may be more than one way to interpret this endorsement, but the one most obvious to us is that area businesses truly value the programming on WSIU and how we meet needs for the region. So much so that they want to be publicly associated and to provide financial support for WSIU broadcasts. Public broadcasting remains one of the last outlets for news that is produced with the audience in mind, not advertisers. We’re also the place where art lives because it’s still considered important for humanity. We remain the place where stories are told because they are interesting and important, not because they involve celebrities or high shock value. Public broadcasting is a place where people talk to each other, not shout at each other. WSIU is a place where lives are changed through new ideas and civil discourse.
So it really should come as no surprise that an increasing number of businesses in our region wish to support the programming on WSIU. It’s a testament to the people of this region, who watch and listen to WSIU and their friends and neighbors who operate businesses and wish to be a part of building their community through the power of public media. Supporting programming on WSIU isn’t merely about name recognition. It’s also about community building and capacity building. When businesses underwrite programming on WSIU, they are re-classified in the minds of our audience members as entities that care about the quality of life throughout the region.
There are so few opportunities where people (through their pledges) and businesses (through corporate support) can work together in such a public manner to improve lives. Hopefully, when you hear the names of the businesses that support WSIU, you’ll consider the very public statement they are making, and thank them for valuing the same programming you value. And if you haven’t already made a gift this year, please consider doing so today. Your support in this partnership is vital.

Exciting changes are on the way at WSIU! We’re changing the look and feel of our online presence with the launch of a new website. The new site, which was designed by Element 74 of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, will continue to provide key information about our programs and services, but with a few new changes.
“This has been a project that has been in the works for some time,” shares Katrina Stackhouse, WSIU’s Digital Services Manager. “The re-vamped site comes with a host of new features, such as our digital newsroom, and a trove of online Digital Services Manager, Katrina Stackhouse, streaming programs uploads new content. Photo: Kaitlyn Conrad. at watch.wsiu.org. Even more so, the new site is built to better connect with our audience, whether they are accessing our media from their smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer.” Changes that are in store include a News webpage, which will serve as an expanded digital newsroom featuring breaking and local news, as well as national headlines about the issues and events important to our community. The site also will provide information about new television and radio programs coming to WSIU, as well as updates about what’s happening behind-the-scenes.
Plenty will also stay the same at wsiu.org. Visitors can access our WSIU HD, WORLD, and CREATE television schedules or watch On Demand. They can access our radio schedules and playlists, listen live, or download podcasts of their favorite radio programs. Visitors can also check out our community calendar to see what activities and events are going on around the region. And, if you love WSIU, you can continue to show your support by making secure donations online. Look for the new site launch before the end of the year, and if you have any questions, contact Stackhouse at (618) 453-6258 or katrina. stackhouse@wsiu.org.

BEGINS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25 BEYOND GEEK is a new series that explores people who are pushing the limits of science, technology, and everything geek. But this isn’t your ordinary science and technology show! It’s about people who take geek to a whole new level.
Each half-hour episode of BEYOND GEEK will delve into fringe ideas that might seem a little odd and sometimes quite a bit ‘out there’. From a group trying to get to space in a balloon to people who dress up as superheroes to fight crime, BEYOND GEEK, hosted Dan Reynoso, Nate Lake, and Sage Michael (left-right, below), dives deep into these amazing stories by joining in the adventure and taking you on a truly unique ride of how – and why – these people do what they do.
By the end of each episode, you’ll learn just how cool those strange ideas are and understand why a word that used to be an insult is now the ultimate compliment.

Veto Session
7
Friday December 5 • 7pm
The Illinois General Assembly returns to the Capitol for the first time since the November 4th general election to face the latest in a continuing series of fiscal crises plaguing Illinois government in recent years. Lawmakers approved only enough money to get through the first half of the state’s fiscal year when they adjourned at the end of May. If there is no action to extend the state’s temporary income tax increase before it sunsets on January 1, the state will be at least two-billlion dollars short of meeting its expenses for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2015, a scenario state Comptroller
[Repeats 12/7 Noon]
Judy Baar Topinka likened to a “fiscal heart attack.”
Illinois Lawmakers, the state’s longest running television series covering the Illinois Statehouse, will offer insights into what action, if any, lawmakers may take to address the looming budget shortfall during the Fall Veto Session, taking place November 19-21 and December 2-4. River Region Students Win Top Honors in IBA Silver Dome Awards Congratulations to the River Region Evening Edition (RREE) and SIU Carbondale students who work on the live WSIU-TV newscast who scooped up multiple awards at annual Illinois Broadcasters Assocation’s (INBA) Silver Dome Student Awards in October. The student newscast won 2nd Place for Best Student Newscast – a team honor for the more than 100 students who work in the newsroom, on camera, and behind the scenes. The RREE won 1st Place in 2012.
Rob Thies, a senior in Radio, TV & Digital Media (RTD) from Ava, Ill., won First Place for Best TV Weathercast; Alan Selph, a senior in RTD from Chicago, won First Place for Best TV Sports Package, and Springfield native Krista Burris, a 2014 graduate of the RTD program, won two awards for Best TV News Package. “These honors continue the tradition of excellence displayed by our program and our students who work on the live newscast in the newsroom, in the studio, and in the control room,” said Greg Todd, News Director. “This continued recognition of the student newscast’s excellence wouldn’t be possible without the hard work, skill and talent of the
students we attract to SIU’s RTD program year after year,” Todd said. “Attracting quality students is a direct result of the high quality education provided by the RTD faculty and the hard work and commitment by the professionals who train the students with hands-on experience.”
Shown above: SIU student winners & faculty advisor Joey Helleny (back, right). Photo: Greg Todd.
The River Region newscast began broadcasting this semester with a new state-of-the-art digital studio control room. “The facilities are unlike anything that broadcast news students are able to train on elsewhere,” said Todd.
Plans are underway to build a new stateof-the-art newsroom with more than 5,000 square feet of space. “The architects tell me it will be the best university student newsroom in the nation,” said Todd. The newscast airs Monday through Thursday at 5pm on WSIU-TV during the academic year. “It provides our students with a level of training that is hard to find at the university level,” said Todd, “combining a quality education with a hands-on experience that
helps our graduates rise to the top of the resume stack during job searches.”
Assisting Todd with the RREE newscast are RTD faculty advisors and senior lecturers Joey Helleny and Eileen Waldron, along with Darryl Moses, WSIU’s associate director for Television and Video Services, and WSIUTV production specialists Abby Hargrave and Mark St. George. The RREE is now in its 45th year of airing on WSIU-TV and is made possible by a partnership between the SIU Department of Radio, Television & Digital Media, WSIU Public Broadcasting, and the College of Mass Communications and Media Arts.

WSIU and WGBH (Boston) are collaborating to develop a national case study of Plum Landing, a new multimedia resource for children ages 6-9 and their families. This autumn, WSIU has been working to encourage families to get outside and get engaged with nature.
Wonderreel: TV for Digital Natives WSIU introduced a new breed of TV network to children in southern Illinois as part of the WONDERREEL content preview, led by Russ Miller, Managing Director of the Center for Intentional Media and founder of the online TV network WONDERREEL (photo at left, with Beth Spezia).
Discovery began October 4 with use of Plum Landing resources at WSIU’s Learning Lab located on the SIU Carbondale campus.
Families extended their environmental learning from the media lab to a guided hike and related outdoor activities at SIU’s Campus Lake. WSIU and WGBH are developing a video about the Plum Landing experience.

Educators ‘See the Light’ at Regional Teacher’s Institute Workshop
WSIU to Participate in State High School Civic Education Workshop Friday, November 7
Dunn Richmond Center, Carbondale Encouraging civic participation is an important part of WSIU’s public service mission. In support of our commitment to this vital community service, WSIU Educational Outreach Coordinator Beth Spezia and WSIUTV Senior Producer Jak Tichenor will join John Jackson of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at SIU Carbondale on a panel for the workshop “Civic Education Using Illinois PBS LearningMedia.” Also participating in the workshop will be local educator Jamie Nesh Mayberry, a Civic Education Teacher at Shawnee High School, who will present “Lessons from the Levies: How Shawnee High School Tapped Civic Education Resources”.
Another focus of the workshop is the Democracy Schools in Illinois initiative. The non-partisan Illinois Civic Mission Coalition and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation are spearheading an initiative to build Democracy Schools throughout our state. Democracy Schools provide students with authentic experiences in the rights, responsibilities, and tensions inherent in living in a constitutional democracy. Through these experiences, students gain the knowledge, skills, and character necessary for informed and effective engagement in our democracy.
Above: Assistant Superintendent Mary Ann Quivey (left) and High School Teacher Terry Meyer (right) share a laugh after observing the performance of a Rube Goldberg machine. Below: Teachers work on their projects. All photos: Beth Spezia.
WSIU outreach coordinator Beth Spezia hosted an exhibit and shared information about PBS Digital Resources, including Illinois PBS LearningMedia, at the MonroeRandolph County Bi-County Teacher’s Institute on October 10. Approximately 700 K-12 educators participated in the event, which included a hands-on workshop by
Red Bud High School teacher Terry Meyer. Entitled “Truly Trial-AndError Engineering”, the workshop invited teachers to use Rube Goldberg machines to turn on a light switch.
Four area high school districts are among only 31 schools in the state to earn Democracy School designations: Belleville East and Belleville West High Schools, Carbondale High School, and Shawnee High School.
Other high schools that plan to participate in the workshop to develop Democracy School capacity include Marion High School, Mt. Vernon Township High School, Granite City High School, and Alton High School.
Meyer’s talented students have been participating in, and regularly winning, international competitions with their devices.

Rhythm in Bloom Turns 5! Though Hochheimer has spent most of his professional life as a college professor, he has worked in many aspects of radio since his teens, including as a disc jockey in major markets, and he’s rubbed elbows with famous musicians like B.B. King, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Elton John, and Jerry Garcia.
Congratulations to SIU Radio-TV-Digital Media Professor John Hochheimer (shown above, photo by Kaitlyn Conrad), host of WSIU Radio’s Sunday night jazz program, Rhythm in Bloom – now celebrating 5 years on the air! Hochheimer hosted a special edition of the weekly jazz series on October 12. The series airs Saturdays at midnight and Sundays at 8pm on WSIU Radio’s main and HD1 channels, and on WSIU HD2 on Saturdays at 9pm and Sundays at 11pm.
“The first tune I ever played on the program was ‘West End Blues’ by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five, which was recorded in the mid-1920s,” says Hochheimer. “The clarion call of his horn announces that something good is about to come. It’s been the lead-off tune for each anniversary program.” Rhythm in Bloom paints a musical landscape that is quite different from what most listeners hear on the radio. “The program is unique in its focus on how different musical genres compare and contrast with each other,” says Hochheimer. “I consciously juxtapose tunes so that there is some connection between the two in terms of key, rhythm, chord progression, beat, and lyrics.”
Listeners have sent numerous emails and letters in support of the program over the years. “One letter…came from the from the father of a young girl near Mt. Vernon,” says Hochheimer. “(He) wrote that the music had inspired his daughter to keep playing and practicing her saxophone.” Beginning November 17, NPR is making some changes to its newsmagazine clocks. This will help align programs with the way people listen to radio today, and provide stations with more flexibility to include the local content that’s important to their audiences.
“I spent five hours in on again/off again conversation with David Bowie on my radio show,” says Hochheimer. “His career was in a tailspin, and he was returning to England to rethink his career. But, he did have a vision of turning bland concerts into full 3-D performances with costumes, lights, smoke, acrobats. He set the tone for the concert extravaganzas of today.” Hochheimer was influenced by many people in his early radio career, in particular by Augie Blume, who was the national promotion director for RCA Records when Hochheimer, then a 19-year-old DJ in Boston, first met him. Their friendship spanned 40 years and when Blume passed away in 2009, he left his large jazz record collection to Hochheimer, who decided to honor his friend by including Blume’s name in the title of his radio program. “(Augie) taught me to respect my listeners, leading them from what they listened to and liked toward fresh sounds, fresh ideas,” says Hochheimer. “He also taught me how to hear underlying connections between differing pieces and genres of music, and to lead my listeners in this continuing discovery.”
Blume’s influence extends to Hochheimer’s hopes for Rhythm in Bloom and its impact on listeners. “I hope to inspire a love of music and the enjoyment to be derived from relaxed listening,” he says. “I hope to share what I have learned about the music and the socio-cultural moment within which it emerged, so that people can feel more connected (to) the music and the people who made it.”
What does this change mean to you, our listeners? You’ll still hear our local and national stories, plus local weather and the Marketplace Morning Report, but the segment timings will be different. For example, during Morning Edition you’ll hear local news at 4-minutes past the hour, a local weather update around 20-past, and an indepth newscast or feature segment at about 45-minutes past the hour. Join us for a fresh look at your favorite NPR news programs!

Thank you to everyone who made the Classic Vinyl and Media Sale a great success for another year. The Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) held its annual fundraiser at the University Mall in Carbondale on September 20-21 and raised nearly $6,000. That’s a lot of donated albums and VHS tapes! We raised more than $900 from the sale of turntables, stereo components, VCRs, and DVD players, and sold more than 3,000 albums, 800 CDs, 300 VHS tapes, and 100 DVDs.
WSIU and SIRIS especially want to thank our community partners – the University Mall, SIU Credit Union, Wright Do-It Center in Murphysboro, and Du Quoin Public Library.
All proceeds support SIRIS, our reading service for local individuals with vision impairments. The service is provided free of charge to anyone who is blind or otherwise has difficulty seeing or reading independently. SIRIS provides coverage within a 45-mile radius of Carbondale and within a 20-mile radius of Mt. Vernon. For more information or to request service, call (618) 453-2808. Learn more online at wsiu.org/siris.

feastmagazine.com/feast_tv WSIU is proud to welcome the culinary series FEAST TV to our schedule! Produced and hosted by Catherine Neville, publisher of the St. Louis-based food magazine Feast, the Emmy-winning series will air weekly on Saturdays at 10am, then switch to a monthly rotation next spring, airing on the first Saturday of every month at 10am.
Inspired by Feast’s print features, FEAST TV offers unique content focusing on the people and places that help to define the regional food scene. You’ll meet the area’s most innovative culinarians and get a fresh look at local foods across the region, including southern Illinois (a recent episode featured Scratch Brewing Company in Ava). Each episode includes a cooking demo, filmed in Neville’s kitchen, that progresses through the show. Peacemaker & Sidney Street Café in St. Louis. Photo: Alessio Summerfield.
ABOUT THE NOVEMBER EPISODE
On November 1, FEAST TV gives you a reason to be “thankful” for the bounty of the Midwest. Learn how to make pie from the pros at Peggy Jeans Pies in Columbia, Missouri; meet Kevin Nashan of St. Louis’ Peacemaker and Sidney Street Café two of the Gateway City’s most talked about restaurants; learn the art of making seasoned salts and beautiful brines with the team behind Wood + Salt in Kansas City; and in an era when we want to know where our meat comes from, Farmer Girl Meats sources from sustainable producers across the region and delivers meat directly to customers.
