eet SIRIS volunteer Emily Hitchens. She’s originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana and is a graduate of Ball Sate University where she received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. After graduation, Hitchens moved to Chicago for a year to volunteer with Amate House, the Archdiocese of Chicago’s volunteer program that offers young adults opportunities for personal, professional, and spiritual growth.

Hitchens found herself in Carbondale after accepting a position as the campus minister at the Newman Catholic Student Center where she mentors students with Sunday programs and Bible study. Hitchens says she found out about the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) when the Newman Center hosted a trivia fundraiser. “I was new to Carbondale and I was looking for [an organization] that I could volunteer with in my spare time.” She expressed her interest with the SIRIS staff, and they invited her to join. Hitchens has been a volunteer at SIRIS for about eight months, reading the newspapers to the visually impaired. “I don’t have any contact with the people who use the services, but it’s good to know I can [assist] and be a friendly voice,” she says. Hitchens adds that her favorite part about volunteering is reading the local stories because it allows her to catch up with current events.

In addition to SIRIS, Hitchens is involved with Pregnancy Matters, a local non-profit organization that provides assistance to women and families facing an unexpected pregnancy. She helps to coordinate fundraisers and diaper drives for the organization. “We just finished a diaper drive, which we hold about once a semester.” In her spare time, Hitchens enjoys exploring Southern Illinois. “It’s a whole different world if you’re from a big city,” says Hitchens. She loves the region’s scenic trails and often hikes at Giant City State Park and Garden of the Gods. She also likes exploring different restaurants and shops in neighboring towns. Hitchens encourages people to get involved by using their gifts or interests as a starting point. “Whether it’s SIRIS or a church service group, figure out your talent and try to find a way to share it with the community.” To volunteer at SIRIS, please contact WSIU Outreach Coordinator Vickie Devenport at (618) 453-6148 or vickie.devenport@wsiu.org.

ear New Y Scoop? Sunday Schedule Changes The Splendid Table

Sundays 12pm • Begins Jan 6 WSIU Radio welcomes the new Year with a new Sunday programming schedule, beginning with the addition of The Splendid Table on Sundays at noon beginning January 6. Hosted by Lynne Rossetto Kasper (photo at left, courtesy of American Public Media), this preeminent public radio program explores the entire spectrum of food: from cheesemaking…to finding wine bargains…to the science of a great cup of coffee…to the best little greasy spoons in America. The Splendid Table has been at the forefront of food issues and policies since its inception – long before eating local became a catchphrase and farmers’ markets became ubiquitous. The Splendid Table is heard on more than 300 public radio stations across the country – and now you can hear it on WSIU Radio! The Splendid Table is sponsored on WSIU Radio in part by Alto Vineyards and the Neighborhood Co-op Grocery.
