SIRIS Volunteer Profile: Kimberly Mahoney and other print material over the air. “I enjoy reading in general. I always read the newspaper, and it’s something that I enjoy anyway,” Mahoney says. “It’s great to be able to help someone while doing something you enjoy.”

Meet Kimberly Mahoney, a native of Massachusetts, but now, a resident of Carbondale, Illinois. Mahoney’s involvement with the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) is an experience she has enjoyed since she, her husband, and children moved to Carbondale from the Washington, D.C. area two years ago. Being new to town, Mahoney searched for opportunities to become active in the community. She learned about SIRIS from her husband’s colleague and was soon reading the newspaper

Mahoney feels that SIRIS supplies invaluable programming that assists those who can benefit from their services. “For SIRIS, I think we really fill a void in the community,” she says. “There are so many folks that are visually challenged that need us.” Currently, Mahoney serves on the SIRIS advisory board and has held this position for one year. “I was asked by our director, Vickie Devenport. She is so inspirational, and I would do anything I could to support her vision for SIRIS.” Mahoney explains that it is very easy to get involved with SIRIS because reading is something that most people do on a daily basis. “Reading the newspaper and recording it is such a minimal effort, and it can give people

so much or keep something in their lives that may have been taken away through a visual impairment.” Mahoney enjoys WSIU’s programming, as well. “On WSIU TV, my boys and I always watch Nature, and my husband and I watch Antiques Roadshow,” she says. “On WSIU Radio, Morning Edition is good for news, and we also like Putumayo World Music and Celtic Connections.” When Mahoney is not volunteering with SIRIS, she spends time with her family, serves as a taxi service for her sons, and enjoys various outdoor activities, such as running, kayaking, and hiking. Learn how you can give back to your community as a SIRIS volunteer by calling (618) 453-2808 or clicking on the SIRIS tab online at wsiu.org.

Some of the common session tunes are featured this week, along with recordings from pub sessions. Sept 26 • Celtic Collections This week we will sort through some of the overly-sentimentalized, hackneyed, and notready-for-primetime recordings to bring you some of the best from these Celtic collections.

WSIU is my source for unbiased news coverage. - Dr. Joseph Hudgins, DDS, Carbondale IL

Public broadcasting has something for everyone. For Dr. Joseph Hudgins, DDS, owner of Hudgins Orthodontics, WSIU Radio is his family’s primary source for in-depth news and educational programming. “The news stories on NPR and WSIU are in-depth, not just sound bites that last a few seconds or minutes, and that perspective just can’t be duplicated by reading a news headline.” Hudgins also appreciates the intelligence of the NPR and WSIU Radio reporters who bring him the news each day. “I expect to learn more on WSIU Radio and NPR,” he says. “I expect to be challenged and to move out of my comfort zone a bit. This is one of the reasons why WSIU is so important to me and my family.” Share your story online at wsiu.org/mysource.
