THANKS FOR HELPING US HIT OUR TARGET!

2015 SPRING COMMUNITY

SUPPORT CELEBRATION

Thank you for making WSIU Radio’s 2015 Spring Community Support Celebration a tremendous success! Together we raised over $20,000 to support the rich and diverse programming that can only be found on public radio. Community support is our most reliable source of funding, accounting for 30% of our annual budget. If you didn’t get the chance to donate during our spring drive, you can make an online pledge by clicking the “pledge & renew” button at www.wsiu.org or call Susan Patrick at (618) 453-6184. Thank you!

SPOTLIGHT KAITLYN HOLTSCLAW Kaitlyn Holtsclaw is a student as Southern Illinois University (SIU), studying Zoology with a specialization in Environmental Biology, and two minors in Geographic Information Systems and Chemistry. She has made the Southern Illinois Radio Information Services (SIRIS) a priority in her life, working as a student volunteer. Holtsclaw is originally from the small town of Athens, Illinois and graduated high school as one of five valedictorians. At SIU, she is a member of the University Honors Program, which encouraged her to volunteer. Holtsclaw has been volunteering with SIRIS for about six months. She learned about the opportunity through the SIU volunteer office, and seems very

happy – saying, “It’s the easiest volunteering you could ever do! I learn all of these fun facts, and I appreciate all of the things I learn about local news and sports.”

Though this is only her first year at SIU, she is already very involved. When Holtsclaw is not volunteering at SIRIS, she helps out with a number of other services. She is a part of the Saluki Science Volunteers, where she helps the College of Science and Dean of Retention to create programs that will help keep students at SIU. This includes attending open houses, and answering new student and parent questions. Holtsclaw is also a lab volunteer for one of her instructors, and is currently working on testing Campus Lake to determine how to prevent toxic algae growth.

community services. When asked about her work at SIRIS she said, “You may not need these services now. However, if the services stop because you aren’t supporting them, then when you realize the importance and you do need them – they may be gone – it may be too late.” She goes on to say, “It really does make me feel good to help people.” In her free time, Holtsclaw enjoys crocheting, reading, having movie nights, going to the SIU Recreation Center with friends, and on occasion tries to just do nothing. She said she has to tell herself, “I’m sitting down, and I’m going to relax – I’m doing something that’s not related to school.”

Based on Holtclaw’s volunteer activities, it’s obvious that she has a great appreciation for

Engaging People And Issues Through Films & Discussion

In March, we had two COMMUNITY CINEMA events, featuring a screening of the Independent Lens films, American Denial and The Homestretch. Both events drew a large group of interested community members from all walks of life who gathered at the Carbondale Public Library. American Denial investigates the power of unconcious biases in society today. The Homestretch follows three homeless teens while they brave Chicago winters, high school pressures, and life alone on the streets to build a brighter future.
